    Three Friends for me is the best album by Gentle Giant. Is so special, the beginning of the album is one of the best intros i have ever heard and the last song, my godness so gentle.., so giant.

    When discussing Interview, I mistakenly referred to I Lost My Head as Peel The Paint which was obviously because the two were performed as a medley on the live album, Playing The Fool. Oops!!! My bad!!!

    Free Hand is my favorite GG album too, one of the things I love about it is it's accessible (IMO) to people that have never heard them and at the same time it's their pinnacle masterpiece of GG style prog. In a Glass House was practically impossible to get here in the US which turned out to be a good thing because it introduced me to "import record stores" which specialized in well...imports opened up a whole world of prog to me, one local store became my "go to" store for music.

    Just finished transcribing the entirety of Ray Shulman’s bass parts off In A Glass House. My favourite album of theirs. On a MENTAL Gentle Giant trip, rn.. Probably might be my favourite of the big main Brit prog bands actually. As someone who’s always been a huge sucker for odd time signatures and polyrhythms, etc, Gentle Giant just gives me what I need 🚬😎 lol. I saw them live when I was 19, back in 2009. Same prog fest that I saw Le Orme at. Wasn’t under the GG name obv, was Three Friends. But I’ll never forget, the venue had a waiting hall which had a grand piano, outside the concert hall, so as we were all waiting to be let in to see Gentle Giant, some random dude sat at the piano and started playing “Think Of Me With Kindness” on the piano, and suddenly everyone in the waiting hall started singing along. Being a teen punk who was a HUGE 70s prog head, surrounded by mostly metal heads in those years, I had not even a single friend who was into prog rock. (Tbh to this day, my sis is the only person in my life IRL who’s into prog rock like I am lol), but ya… Being in a room where everyone was spontaneously singing along to fucking Gentle Giant, that gorgeous Kerry Minnear ballad… god damn. God fuckin’ dayum.. just such a special, MAGICAL moment in my life. I’ll never fucking forget it. 🥰🥰🥰

    Your rankings are virtually the same as mine. We are definitely kindred spirits! The only ones I would swap would be The Missing Piece a little higher, Acquiring The Taste at number 10 (!...yep, I have never thought it that good), Power and The Glory #4, In A Glass House # 3, Octopus #2. But yes, Freehand, what an album, my Number 1 as well. I am so glad you like Civilian....too bad they called it quits after that.
    And yes; Playing The Fool live album to me is the greatest live album ever recorded...alongside Live Dates by Wishbone Ash.
    Brilliant rankings. Congratulations for having great taste!

    Just getting into Gentle Giant (obsessively) over the last several weeks. Love your list, and agree as far as I can… (haven’t heard any of the early or late ones.) Way of Life is definitely hell yeah!!! Right now In a Glass House is at the top. I’m just so in love with the run of those songs. All so spectacular, especially Way of Life. The first album I discovered was Power and the Glory which just bowled me over. It’s so muscular and original. I’ve delved as well into Octopus and Free Hand, both of which are amazing. I have a feeling my feelings for each of these albums will be shape-shifting in the same way that many of their songs do! Anyway, thanks for the awesome video!

    Octopus is a clear number 1 for me. I still listen to this album 3-4 times a month. One of the few perfect albums IMO.
    Then, from 2 to 7, my order could change a bit any other day. All quality albums. 10 years ago, 3 Friends was probably my number 2 but it has changed a bit since.
    The bottom 3 is pretty clear to me. I don't enjoy any of these albums. Many people told me I had to listen to Civilian more.. Meh. I have and I just don't get it at all.

    In the more or less strictly 'prog' canon, "Playing the Fool" is indeed the stand-out, on par for comparison across genres, with Humble Pie/Live at the Flimore, and V.S.O.P. (Hancock, Hubbard, Shorter, Carter, and Williams)/The Quintet, or Joni Mitchell/Shadows and Light.

    I appreciate that you change up the lower rankings a little bit away from the typical bottom triumvirate of Giant for a Day (100% their worst), Missing Piece, and Civilian, and instead included the debut which I love, but see as a weak GG album solely for the reason the band hasn't been fleshed out yet for the whole album. Instead of Civilian I would swap the Missing Piece which I saw as a possible template for the band moving forward if they wanted to include some more accessible hit-type material. Watching the live performance of Missing Piece from that tour (on TH-cam) they actually integrated that material really well into their larger sound and set lists. They could have woven some of those more simple tracks in between some more complicated tracks, like smashing something like Civilian together with something like Interview. Speaking of, Interview always seems to get defaulted to the lower echelons of fan rankings which I understand, but the more I listen to that particular album I feel it gets a bad rap because of it. It's so hard to rank anything before the Missing Piece though imo simply because all of those albums are SO strong, it's hard to know where to draw the line between sheer great playing on the albums and personal tastes. Great list

    amazing records at your back like always...., the new wobbler is incredible..., tangent are fantastic, and goblin amazing staff...., roller is one of the best..., gentle giant is one of the best..., they are pure virtuosity..., but are not easy to hear..., like van der graaf..., is not for all...is not like yes or genesis..., being incredible are more easy to listen...., the giant are complicate and really dense..., all records are really good...., i have all dvds and the thing more amaze me is in the way some of the members can play diferent instrument at that top virtuosity level..., with this touch of gothic music and medieval folk influence..., till the vocal chorus are complicate as hell in setback...., you can hear think in giant albums before a band like queen use it in their albums.., of course with limitations...., you can hear about the schulman brothers but i cant believe people on prog dont speak more about the guitar player and the drummer..., they play impossible things man..., really gald you speak about giant..., they need still to be discober for a lot..., not so much people speak about them... great video scott...., ahhhhhh, to start to name live records of bands and dont named welcomeback my friends is for burn you like a heretic...., (just kidding...). giant was maybe the mosy hard influence in italian prog band and never were named for that.., maybe more than tull or elp..., in the ,70s they were bigger in italy than anywhere else....

    Civilian is absolutely an artistic success. Sucks that it wasn't a commercial success. Great album.
    Overall, we're very similar in our evaluation, except that I'd rank Interview a lot higher. Had a big ol' "thang" with it last summer. Love "Give It Back", and "Design" is just radical. "I Lost My Head" shows why Minnear was such a great, probably underrated keysman.
    For now I'd place TPATG at #1, but really from 7-1, things are pretty much interchangeable. Hard to split hairs. Brilliance from front to back.

    Acquiring the Taste did receive a US release as I own an American copy, a later pressing on the spaceship Vertigo label. Their debut was never released here upon release. I also own the UK Vertigo swirl of Acquiring the Taste I bought in 2015 for only $20! Unbelievable given originals go for around ten times that much and finding rare LPs for ridiculously cheap is virtually unheard of these days. Plays a little crackly, no skips and someone wrote an "x" on the back cover and on label but great to own the original. The color shading on the cover is a bit different from the American pressing.

    GG HAS PRODUCED 7 EXCELLENT ALBUMS THROUGHOUT HIS CAREER. It's rather rare!

      It's not a fun game for me, it's more a question of credibility. I like talking about music, but I like precision.
      I asked you which albums you considered excellent... You answered:
      Rush has 5 10/10 albums, while you only mention 2;
      Gentle Giant has 4 10/10 albums and only mention 2;
      Yes has 6 10/10 albums and only mention 2;
      Genesis has 6 10/10 albums and only mention 2;
      Jethro Tull has 5 10/10 albums and only mention 4;
      Pink Floyd has 4 10/10 albums and only mention 3;
      Styx has 4 10/10 albums and only mention 2!!!
      Really, your assessment is so varied that I can't figure it out. I therefore invite you to adopt a certain professionalism which greatly harms your credibility. On this subject, I congratulate you for your constant responses in their publication, if not precise.
      Know that I will happily continue my visit to your site despite everything, because the pleasure of talking about music will always prevail... and so I congratulate you on the publication of your site on progressive music.

    Their decline was kinda inevitable in the late 70s. By 1976 the band was creatively exhausted. They never get good sales. Perhaps the best thing would be take a pause. Giant for a day unashamedly poppish album. The old fans were in fury and the new auditory never appeared. By the way John Weathers had good kinda McCartney style vocals. He needed to sing more. Playing the fool perhaps their best album ever. Cause it rocks. Proclamation, Advent of Panurge, On reflection I prefer them live. A sort of raw energy that somehow lacks ( for me anyway) on the studio albums.

      @@TheProgCorner I don't understand why anyone wouldn't like Taste. It and GG were the only ones produced by Bowie himself.

      No, but it’s ranked near the bottom for me. The first two GG albums never hit me like everything from Three Friends to Interview…

    I hate Giant For A Day too. It's horrible. But Words To The Wise is a damn good tune I think. Side two of the Missing piece is a masterpiece if side one disappoints, more than just good -- As Old As You're Young is one of their greatest tunes of all time. My 2 cents

    GEntle giant is classical music like Bach. They're far ahead of almost everything, and ahead anyway of the rest. Difficult to convince people who've never heard of them (but of Jethro Tull, of Colosseum, of etc.)

      Yeah, I got confused because the live version is a medley with I Lost My Head from Interview. Keep watching my videos. I conflate things often!!! 👍👍👍

      @@TheProgCorner Sorry, I made my comment before I saw your correction you made a year ago. I agree that Giant for a Day is their weakest album but I wouldn’t call it a bad album. It’s actually a pretty well crafted pop album, considerably more so (pop, that is) than The Missing Piece which still had some prog elements. Disappointing for a band that made their name in prog, but then they never achieved the success of contemporaries like Yes and Genesis. They are certainly one of my favorite all time bands.
