I'd like to use yellow brass tube for this technique, but can't find what I need for a 9 mm cabochon. If I figure what size to use, I might be able to get supply from the hardware store. Is there a formula for figuring inner and outer diameter plus wall thickness? I'm up the creek on this one.
How is your drill anchored? I know, dumb question, but it isn't obvious (it's out of sight of the camera)!!! Is the drill included just because the tube is too large for your flexshaft collet? I have heard of it with just a flexshaft held against the bench pin spinning the tube (with stone inside) and then using burs or burnisher, etc. Thank you nancy, fab and funny as usual!
+Gabby Flying Chef Hello Ms. Gabby, The drill is in my big-girl vise. The drill is used because the tubing is too large for the flex shaft. Same idea as with the bench pin. Thanks, as always, Gabby!
Great video! Thanks for the great tip. I have a quick question. I think you mentioned at some point that CZs and diamonds are safe to set this way and then solder to your piece. Is that correct? (If this is true, it will make my life so much easier!!!) :)
Love your TH-cam videos Nancy, thank you!!! I was so excited to try this I ordered all I needed and set some CZs and they looked great. And it was so easy :-) Thank you for showing me this and giving me the confidence to try!!! But one word to the wise, I ruined my settings with CZs because I quenched it after soldering and they shattered and clouded. Poop, right? Nancy, since I'm just a beginner and this was the first time I had set a stone, I was wondering if the heat from soldering (and air cooling only) will make the CZs more prone to cracking with just normal wearing? Or do they remain strong?
I thought you put together a tube measurement document for us safe for instants if you were setting a 4 mm stone, the outer diameter would be? And the inner diameter would be? But you had filled in the numbers????? I really think it was you who had this document. Or I just now thought about it you might have given the document about files sizes what files size you should use when you’re cutting metal with the different gauges. Anyway, help me out Nancy please I just bought a 12 inch tube from Otto Frei and it was supposed to be heavy wall and it’s not And I got charged $75. Crazy isn’t it. And now Silver dropped today. God I’m so mad at myself. But I’m going to actually go to Rio Grande and just buy some different tubes heavy wall deep settings. I talk text so I hope this made sense. Thank you, Michelle.🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
I'm confused. If you wanted half a mm of metal outside the stone, you would have to add a full mm over the size of the stone. You added only one half mm.
+Me Now I understand why you are confused. I should have said to have at least a 1/4 of a millimeter to go over the stone. The .50 mm additional material is a minimum. If you wanted 1/2 a millimeter of metal over the stone, of course you would choose tubing that was 1mm larger. Thank you for pointing that out. With smaller stones, 1/2 millimeter might be too much. Take care and thanks.
I have cats, too. Unfortunately down to 2; my only cat died 12/02/15. She would've been 20 in January. Other cats belong to husband &/or son - who left home but could only take one cat. They - and their hair!- are in EVERYTHING; but couldn't do without them.
+Kirsten M Blair Sorry to hear about your loss Kirsten. I love my babies a lot too. There are compromises with them - always. Now, I've got one peeing all over the house. Such fun. I have some heavy duty products to take care of his oversights (or intentional) mistakes. Your kitty lived a long, and no doubt, fabulous life. Lucky cat! Take care.
So many techniques and combinations of them. I am trying to index videos as lessons and Projects to try. All the very best Nancy.
Thanks so much Nancy! This is so helpful! Yes, I missed you! 😊 I LOVE that you're a cat lover too! Be well!
+beader4life Thank you Beader! Meow. Actually, I'm more of a cat slave.
TY

Georgeous, thank you. Little lulu? She is huge 😊
Like Drill idea awesome
Newbie here , so this may be a silly question. If I'm setting softer stones do I need to do all the torching first, then set the stone?

CZ when heated from one side more than the other will crack.. When they are made they are heated same all over the stone.
Nancy, do you recommend fine silver or sterling silver and is soft preferred over hard? Thank you, always love your videos.
