    Matt Smith delivers some great speeches and monologues. The Angels Take Manhattan when trying to convince Amy to stay...this one....and a few more you'll run into in future episodes. He gets saddled with the "goofy" doctor label and Tennant gets a lot more love as the dramatic ace. But Smith really kills so many scenes in that mode.

    I kinda wish that they had ended the episode with the Doctor's speech. I feel like the "actually the leaf saved us all" angle kinda took away from it.

    • @ftumschk
      @ftumschk 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      I've sometimes thought so, too, but on reflection perhaps doing it this way round increased the tension. The leaf was "the straw that broke the camel's back", but would only work _after_ the Doctor had softened up the enemy. That softening up was crucial, because without it Clara's leaf wouldn't have worked on its own. It was the Doctor and Clara's teamwork that saved the day, if you like, not just the leaf.

    • @obiwankenobi687
      @obiwankenobi687 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Vitor Vidolin it does make sense tho because the doctors experiences are finite, whereas the leaf represents infinite possibilities and so therefore is more powerful as there were no limits on the stories and value and power it could absorb from it

      In the context of this episode alone.. yes, it does seem stupid. It SEEMS like Clara's shoehorned into it. The Doctor's very epic and brilliant speech would be a more poetic climax/resolution. But a few things to consider:
      --The point of the episode is that the Doctor = the sun god. The Doctor is "grandfather" (Susan's grandfather, and because he is old and ancient). The Doctor is also a parasite. He feeds off of the experiences of his companions (like how he told Amy that he keeps companions around for their experiences, because he himself can't see the beauty in the universe as easily anymore). He also often gets his companions hurt, scarred, or killed. He feeds on their lives just as the old god does. Clara even has to give up her mother's ring and the leaf, while the Doctor pretends like he doesn't have Amy's glasses (I don't think that the Doctor is an evil parasite, but that is the allegory).
      --The leaf is more powerful than the Doctor's memories. Why? Because the leaf caused Clara's birth, and Clara was split across the Doctor's timeline. Thus her existence is the Doctor's existence several times over. Again, this doesn't work in the context of the episode, but once you find out why Clara is "the impossible girl," you come to realize that it really is the most important leaf in human history (because without Clara, the Doctor dies, and without the Doctor, humanity dies).

    • @lucasdolding6924
      @lucasdolding6924 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Except it literally is the most important leaf in human history, as without it you wouldn't have Clara who would go on to do all the things later on in The Name of the Doctor and The Day of the Doctor.

      The eiaode is amazing, but I like to pretend it was resolved after the doctor's speech... Like, I get what they where going for, but for such an epic scene with the doctor it was unnecessary and kinda forced to push Clara in to take over the scene.

    • @samkeir9212
      @samkeir9212 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Bibby totally agree with you; i love that Clara has a big presence, and i think it really helped give her character a personality, but it should never compromise the doctor. In most recent years, the companions have had so much influence on the outcome of a story, and whilst they have always been a key part to who the doctor is, i think he/she should be allowed to shine so much more - this includes the excessive use of the sonic with Jodie, it completely defeats the sense that the doctor is the main source of knowledge

    • @mariastephens1827
      @mariastephens1827 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@samkeir9212 I know this is a super late response, but I just had a thought - I agree it seems quite anticlimatic how the Doctor gives all his memories then Clara is the one who takes care of things, but if you think about it, it's only hinting at who she is. "I was born to save the Doctor". She's filling her role, the role only she can play, as the impossible girl. I think it works in that frame of mind.
      As well, I know Clara presents the leaf as infinite because of memories never lived, and so people argue, well, anyone could have given anything from someone who died. But I think it's more the point that she 'flew into this world on a leaf', so to speak... the leaf is her. And she's essentially infinite, before the events of 'the name of the doctor' conclude. She's thrown herself into the Doctor's timeline. If this leaf is Clara, then of course the sun can't take it. That's the way I justify the episode.

    A lot of people complain about the leaf defeating the God in this episode, but I think it makes sense when you consider that the Universe literally went out of its way to have that leaf hit Clara's father, just so that he could meet her mother and that Clara herself could be born. It's not just the symbolic idea of the leaf representing infinity, it's the Universe bending itself to create Clara.

    Jenna Coleman was actually in Cpt America First Avenger :)
    There's a special poster for this episode btw, kinda looks like an adventure movie from the 80's www.dailymars.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/DW-708-affiche.jpg

    Remember that the writing from S7 onwards gets worse under Moffat due to him writing Sherlock, the day of the Doctor and Tin Tin. Some episodes weren’t finished on time by fill-in authors but Moffat-The-Prophet put his name on the unfinished yet released episodes.

    People always talk about “the long song” when talking about the ost for this episode but for me the biggest banger in this episode is “the speeder”

    I know that speech that the doctor does off by heart.... Why do I know that but not stuff for exams 😅 this is the most beautiful 11 episode. I adore it. It's my favourite. That speech is ART

    I’m not assuming the amount of confidence you have in yourself and your videos but honestly you should the amount of anticipation I have for your videos is unlike any others your an amazing up and coming creator and it’s nice to see not only a new reaction but your own take aways and predictions keep doing what your doing and I wish you all the best, not that you’ll need it. I plan to stick around for as long as you upload and can’t wait to see you watch the doctor to follow, by the way who’s your favourite doctor so far and for what reason?

    My only complaint about this episode is that the speech delivered by 11 was what the kids back in my day use to call a mic drop.....to have it be anything other than the end, seems a bit off and hurts the speech giving by Clara which was just as important.

      The kids back in your day called a mic drop? Are you a time traveller from 2050, I thought mic drop was a modern thing. I'm joking, but I think the speech by the Doctor was amazing both well written and performed.

      I don't like that he does that speech, he's so hurt and vulnerable and soft and then it's all over a god damn leaf... I'm like wow rlly
