      Agreed. It's mind boggling that Portland doesn't have any major parks. The metro has a high population, qnd the hilly terrain would make for some nice landscape. They can pull off the same trick that Busch Gardens uses to get extra hight on there coasters, by using the terrain to there advantage.

    I was born in Portland in 69, and learned to roller skate here in the early 80's, now I'm 54 and live in Texas, miss Oregon so much but so very pleased to know that the park has survived, I've told my wife stories about my experiences at the park, we'll have to visit this place on my next visit to Portland in 2024.

    Also note that Oaks Park is a non-profit organization. They have the oldest roller rink in the world, and with the only one left with a working pipe organ, with the second largest floor in the USA. The park is one of the few (maybe only?) original trolley parks that are left in the country. They opened in 1905 and the only season it's ever been closed was last year during covid, they have been open during the world wars and have survived 2 major floods. If it does flood, the floor in the skating rink can be cut away from the wall and can float with the waterline. Their oldest ride is the 1913 Herschell-Spillman Noah's Ark Carousel. The rink IS a MUST visit. Smoothest floor you will ever skate on. Even has the wave floor in the back.

    I grew up on Oregon. The Pacific Northwest needs to get a new park. I don't care if it needs to be indoors. The closest things are the parks in Sacramento and the Bay Area or Silverwood in Idaho. While Silverwood is a pretty good park overall, it's out of the way, even for most people in the region. Oaks, Enchanted Forest and Wild Waves aren't enough (though Enchanted Forest is actually pretty cool despite being so small.) Someone needs to put in a seasonal park like Adventureland in Iowa or even something that has the space and potential to grow like Holiday World has. I know the PNW won't get a major Cedar Fair or Six Flags park and certainly nothing from Herschend, SeaWorld, Disney or Universal. But it needs something a bit more substantial.

    • @zacharyyamashita8554

      how is the drive down to discovery kingdom in vallejo? i know it must be an exhaustingly long drive, but can you just take the 101 straight down the whole trip or is that out of the way? I'm down in central California so I'm curious

    • @zacg_
      @zacg_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@reg1m0nz83 obviously, it depends on where you live in terms of getting to the Bay Area. The 101 is a very lovely drive but if you are further north than Medford it becomes quite the trip, compared to most placed in the country (except the Eastern Idaho to the Dakotas, and Alaska and Hawaii.) For most people, I-5 is a faster route, even to the Bay Area. I lived in central Oregon and that would mean an 8-9 hour trip to get to the Bay Area.
      I now live on the East Coast and I probably have at least 15 medium to large size parks within that driving distance now. I have several very good parks within 4 hours. Only people in the greater Spokane area live a reasonable distance to a good park and everyone else in the North West has at least half a day's drive if they want something in that echelon. And while PNE Playland is in the Northwest, besides checking Coaster off your bucket list it really isn't a very impressive park.

    • @reg1m0nz83
      @reg1m0nz83 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zacg_ oh nice! im glad to hear youre living in more of a park hot spot now. a long drive through oregon has been on my mind for a while now hitting up all my favorite spots, and stopping by any of the minor parks i might pass on the way. so theyre part of the trip, and not the destination. its going to be a huge undertaking for my dinky car that doesn't travel farther than LA to SF often, so that info is helpful! even without the major parks, the pacific north west is one of the most beautiful parts of the country. adding any bomb roller coasters would just make it that much better 😩

    • @zacg_
      @zacg_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@reg1m0nz83 totally agree. I love the Pacific Northwest. It really is a wonderful place to live and it's easily one of the most beautiful places in the USA. It just needs some more parks to really make it a well rounded place. That and it would be nice if there were some better museums outside of Seattle but that's another topic.

    Park update - the E&F tracks just got a face lift, and are now purple. Supports were not painted (11k to paint). They are looking to get a 200F Larson Drop Tower, and possibly another coaster. The plan is to clear out the picnic areas. Taylor - if you could put in a budget friendly family coaster, that doesn't spin, what would you do?

As it is, I did make it out to Oaks Park twice this summer and once last summer. Not really much room or area to create a new coaster park in Portland or the attraction to warrant a new coaster park in the area so yeah Oaks Park is what we are stuck with.
    I'd say that the rides are all decent, a nice mix of family rides and thrill rides with other attractions. It is also a nice place to have picnics like you said but so does the Oregon Zoo and I think the Oregon Zoo is so much better in that regard.
    Some of my ride picks at the park:
    Rock & Roll, pretty classic ride where you go both forwards and backward picking up speed and deal with g forces.
    Rock-O-Plane: Prefect ride to mess with your friend, want to go upside down for the whole ride? You got it. This ride allows you to change your angle of tilt while doing a classic Ferris wheel loop making it really fun.
    Oaks Park has been updating some of their rides and changing the name/theming of other rides. So it isn't lost to time but it does certainly show its age with its selection of rides.

    I have been to Oaks Park once. It's basically like your typical old fashioned carnival style amusement park. They used to have a roller coaster called "the roller coasters", and it was the most painful roller coaster I have ever ridden. It felt like you can break your tailbone at the bottom of the first drop. Also, if your legs aren't super long, you had to jump into the seats on the claw ride. Other than that the park was OK. I think I spent most of my time riding the claw ride.

    I've been going to oaks park my whole life, It's really popular around the Portland metro area and people get really excited and think it's a big deal to go there. After going to other amusement parks, I have to say I don't care too much for the rides anymore but I still love it for what it is. Also there used to be another roller coaster called looping thunder and they took it out for a journal and peak. Fun fact the very 1st person to ever go on the new roller coaster was my neighborhood convenience store cashier.

    Look up videos/information about the Wurlitzer pipe organ in the rollerskating rink, it's an amazing piece of engineering and one of only a few still in existence. The semi-truck sized pipeworks hang on a suspended platform above center of the rink. It's truly the main attraction of the park. Do note the schedule on their website though, they only play the organ during certain times/days, otherwise it's DJ'd music.
    Pretty cool too that for a region with such a dearth rollercoasters that we've now got a Gerstlauer Euro-Fighter in town, although it's a small one it still packs a nice little bite sized punch. REALLY really wish there was a major park somewhere between here and Seattle.

    I live in the PDX area. Oaks is fine for what it is. A small, old school amusement park with a beautiful setting next to the river. Great for 2-3 hours of fun. I doubt a major theme park will ever be built in the Pacific Northwest outside of Silverwood. And that's fine. Most people here would rather hike, bike, ski, or hanging out by the coast than go to a theme park.

    My long distance partner loves amusement parks and travels a lot so it sucks that they'll visit Oregon after having gone to places like six flags and universal studios just to only really have oaks, which I warned them is a little lame compared to stuff like that. But what can I complain I'm from Cali so I'm coming from disney land and sea world haha
    Oregon has its charm

    Why are there so few amusement/theme parks in the Pacific Northwest? I mean for such a big urban area (Vancouver, Seattle, Portland) you’d expect there to be a lot more big parks.

      It’s because of our climate our operating season deters potential investors with our rain and snowfall as well as our not very warm summers

    How is it compared to say, Bay Beech?

    • @CoasterStudios
      @CoasterStudios  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      smaller, attractions are grouped closer together, and more expensive (which isn't saying much cause Bay Beach is so cheap)
