“A Man of Two Faces”: Author Viet Thanh Nguyen on New Memoir, U.S. Imperialism, Vietnam & More

  • We are joined by the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Viet Thanh Nguyen to discuss his new book, A Man of Two Faces: A Memoir, a History, a Memorial. Last week the 92NY, a major cultural institution in New York City, canceled an event with Nguyen after he joined 750+ writers in signing an open letter calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. His memoir explores his family's personal history as refugees from Vietnam dealing with the impacts of U.S. imperialism. "Civilian stories are war stories, too," says Nguyen. He says the U.S.'s greatest acts of anti-Asian violence occur internationally and continue today. "I see total continuity between what the United States has done in the Philippines, in Korea, in Japan, in Laos, in Cambodia, in Vietnam and now with Palestine."

Apparently not thoughtful enough when he redacted Trump and not Biden who voted twice against US aids for South Vietnam and its refugees after the fall of Saigon. Despite the fact that the vast majority of racism and attacks against Asians in US weren't from white Americans but that's what he ascribed to and alludingly described in his interview. It seems dude is just another ungrateful liberal detached from reality, unfortunately.

The redaction of the name is appropriate for a person who loves seeing his own name and profiting from its commodification and propagation. Viet Thanh Nguyen’s “The Sympathizer,” “The Committed,” and “The Refugees” are all worth reading, as I’m sure this one is too.

Thank you for this interview. I have a new author to add to my list.! Love this interview and how he provides a nuanced perspective of the Asian immigrant story and is still critical of the US, his receiving country. I love how he characterizes his identity and his experiences on language, assimilation, while still being able to realize what he's lost through assimilation.

Interesting interview. As a Vietnamese refugee coming to America at 14 growing up in the foster care system and joined the Navy deploying to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Djibouti, I have a much different take on America. I am concerned about America drifting into communism with woke culture being imposed in all facets of society. As an educator in CA, I am fighting an uphill battle to restore America back to its founding ideals of God, family, and country. I came to America when President Ronald Reagan took office. I like his vision of America being a shining light on the hill and a beacon of hope for the world.

My grandfather, my father, and myself were born in San Jose, CA. According to my father, downtown San Jose was very dangerous back in the 70s and 80s with high rates of criminal activities. Vietnamese refugees eventually bought or leased commercial properties in the area to open their family-run stores, which changed the landscape of many parts of San Jose for the better. Nguyen's parents were two of those people.

Read the Sympathizer, interesting novel. We shouln't forget, though, that Vietnam has a long history of being colonized, i.e. by China, Japan, France, and finally the US. One of the best movies, imho, is Section 319, a film about a mixed platoon of French and Asian soldiers making their way to Cambodia and their experience with the local population, victims to both sides, the French as well as the Viet Minh. The lesson learnt? Like later in Afghanistan, the Americans simply took over from the Russians, or in the case of Vietnam, the French whose inept generals thought it would be child's play to conquer those farmer soldiers.

But I understand your point, becoming proficient in English made u distant from ur native language speakers and its stories.. and when u realise this it hits you painfully. But donot let your pain turn into hate for English dear. Btw English is not my first language but i am proficient is both my native language, English and one more . This professor is ungrateful for the opportunities that America has given him. I’m a boat person from Vietnam. I came to the U.S. as a refugee when I was a small child. My parents and grandparents lived through war, but they moved on with life. I have an extensive community of Vietnamese refugees that grew up in America, and all are successful. None of us experienced “passed on” trauma. Life is what you make of it. If you embrace the victim mentality taught by the public schools and media, you will see the negative side of everything. This guy threw a bunch of victim word salad out there to fit in. Blame colonial and imperialism for everything, but regular Vietnamese ppl had better lives when the French and Americans were there. It all went to the dumps when the Communists took over the country.

Without GOP POTUS (like Trump), dude and his family along with hundreds of thousands other Vietnamese war refugees would have had zero chance to immigrate to USA at the end of the Vietnam War, as Dems led by Biden literally voted twice against US aids for South Vietnam and its refugees after the fall of Saigon in 1975. Also, despite the fact that the vast majority of racism and attacks against Asians in US weren't from white Americans yet that's the woke concept this bootlicker ascribed to and alludingly described in his interview, all for personal gains just to follow the direction which the wind blows. Listening to his victimhood laced with American "colonialism", "racism" word salad, one would have thought dude was a Vietnamese Commie propaganda officer instead of a refugee fleeing Communism. His motive as a calculated opportunist was clear though. It seems dude is just another selfish, ungrateful liberal detached from reality, unfortunately.
