Johnny Marr on Morrissey, why he hates politicians and the Manchester attack

  • The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr talks to Krishnan Guru-Murthy from London's ICA on the release of his new album Call the Comets. A political musician from his early days of gigging at Glastonbury, he now talks of disagreeing with Smiths frontman Morrissey over his far-right leanings, how the terrorist attack in Manchester jolted his creativity and why he thinks politicians are more desperate for fame than anyone else.

You are so limited in your assessment of both of them. Both contribute to music at a level few can.
Sad that their history seems difficult but neither has lost a split second, and the lyrics always fresh.
I won’t choose sides because there is no need to do so. Both of these men still add to my life. I like having both in my life.
It is the two creatives of the best band of the twentieth century.
Even though I have an ear & more theory than most, how can I ever know enough to have an ability to rank them.
It isn’t possible to rank one above the other. They are both equally world class. I just listen.
Two absolute masters. I love the work that each of them has produced.
You may prefer one or the other. I will just enjoy their work. Neither ever disappoints.
      Two legends.

He may well be a 'nice guy', but he is very politically naive and dull. If he could see through Livingstone and then also got a hint of what goes on with Cameron 'appropriating' his generation, then he also needs to make the next step and work out what that so called 'left' project that he provided a soundtrack for was really about.
Blair changed our society irreparably, too (in fact, more so) and Cameron was his explicitly stated heir. So given his part and his concern for his country, maybe learn and speak up about how our nation was dismantled in favour of globalism and technocracy, instead of sitting on some pre-Blair, anti-Thatcher conception of the world. And, perhaps, when you do meet Obama, ask him about flattening Lybia and putting it back in the stone age and the funding, training and arming of ISIL in Syria after you've finished bowing to him.
Morrissey was thinking critically from the beginning - his analysis continues to be radical - the New Labour cohort were all transparent from the beginning (check out the authoritarian 'Covid Passport holders only' Bragg during Lockdowns).
And by the way - what is with Ch 4 recording everything on half volume so the adverts blow your ears off?

This is called someone speaking thoughtfully, insightfully and honestly. If you were not so ignorant you wouldn’t worry about people’s hair style which has no relevance on a human being and what they stand for in any way shape or form. It probably costa nothing btw - his record label will provide stylists etc, like every other musician of his standing on the planet. Read his book and understand that he is a fan of fashion and clothes and in fact was his first love ahead of music.

He's been actively trying avoid being political, so it's kind of sad to see him cowed into instant agreement with this Channel 4 interviewer. Need to watch Jordan Peterson's Channel 4 interview again to cleanse my palette. And it's "Call the Comet", not "Call the Comets", Channel 4.

Marr makes this interview great despite the desperate effort of the activist to try to draw some politics out of him.
I wish journalists would do journalism instead of cravenly seeking for virtue signals or political alignment statements like religious people try to suss out infidels.

Interesting the boomers who were once Smiths fans criticise the guy who formed the band for not towing the right-wing line which a lot of that generation seem to be all about these days. Buying up properties in inner cities, gentrifying them and selling them for inflated prices whilst this guy is still playing his guitar. I know who I’d rather have a conversation with.

Sorry the center did not jold for the Smiths. But you need maximum artistic freedom and so did Moz.
I can somewhat understand why the tension but I chalk it up to personality differences.
But the Smiths legacy will live forever. As will your subsequent music.
And for those with a good mind, your observations on politics is another example of your talent. Keep on being a bloke who knows what he believes & why.
    Truly a working class hero.
Thank you for the entirety. of what you do. The ideas as well as the notes.
Keep on. You are an amazing observer of all that you encounter.
    Love & respect.

Not much worse than an under prepared interviewer. Look at Cheryl Waters at KEXP on the tour in Seattle - thats how you do it. Oh and Channel 4 - its Call The Comet, singular, only 1 comet. No Comets. Could be a follow up album I guess.
