    my mom, who went to beauty school, has been bleaching, coloring, and even giving me perms since i was in 2nd grade and I'm in college now. despite all of that though, i don't have a single split end. since i was a kid, she taught me to always put conditioner in the ends of my hair while it was wet, and to comb it but not wash it out. when i wash it, i put it in a bun and only wash my scalp, and rinse my ends. your ends don't to be washed. i think all of this helps to keep my hair shiny and healthy.

      Sounds good. When you say you put it in a bun, where do you do the bun? At your nape or onto of your head? I've been doing it a few days but it tricky for the bin not to come loose

    As a hairdresser, I have been doing the "dusting" technique on clients for years, and it's wonderful. When you are literally cutting between 1/8 and 1/16 of an inch off the hair you WILL see growth and healthier hair. Most people who need this type of cut are also color treated, heat styling, and maybe not using the best products for their hair, so the hair may not be in the best condition. The information she is giving in this video is correct.

      What do you think about the split ender pro ?

  • @imakefoodhappen
    @imakefoodhappen 9 ปีที่แล้ว +117

    I don't think the shorter hairs on top means they're short because they're broken. They could be just new growth and haven't reached the length yet. If you keep cutting them, they're never gonna reach your length, so aren't you gonna get stuck with a lot of fly aways all the time? And my split ends are not mostly at the top, they're always right at the bottom of my head, like around the neck and behind the ears. The inner hairs are always split. I think it's because they rub against my clothes the most. The top is a lot better.

      Ur hair could be dry. Put an oil in it. Not enuff to make it oily looking, but to smooth it. Ur work, home could be very dry/no humidity. Crack a,window open a bit to get humidity in, or put a pan of water out in room in winter. Or humidifier. Get a hair scarf for sleep. Cheaper than silk pillowcase. 3 bucks ebay

      I think she's saying mostly for people with bleach on colored hair but yet our mind is the same way I've reverted back to my natural color hard to get the split ends I don't know if they're split at the top or the bottom maybe both

    This was so incredibly helpful for me. I have the worst split ends. I used to blow dry my hair every single day for work. I'm now a stay at home mom and have not had a haircut in over 2 years. These tips that keep me from having to go into a salon or at least make my hair look less crazy until I can get some help are awesome! Thanks so very much!!!

    As a stylist myself I can say with certainty that trimming your hair does NOT make it grow faster or healthier. Your hair grows from the roots. The rate and health of your growth depends on diet, overall health, and genetics. However, if your ends are damaged, it will continue breaking up the hair shaft so please get your hair trimmed like she said! But only as needed.

    • @MrSlimpickenz
      @MrSlimpickenz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Exactly!!!!!
      I don't know where she got her info or who taught her this. And short hairs are 99% of the time just new hair(since we shed hair everyday and they do grow back).

    Not all hairs that "pop" out will be breakage, some will also be regrowth.

    • @DaveThompsonfairlife4all
      @DaveThompsonfairlife4all 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Practicerecordings I was thinking that too. Guess there's not much you can do about split ends except for preventing them in the first place.

    • @Practicerecordings
      @Practicerecordings 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Dave Thompson Yeah, you can actually see split ends though, if you take a small section and hold it to the light...it will have a V formation at the end, or will look ragged up the shaft a bit. I trim off those to where the hair looks healthy, but you have to be careful just trimming "all" hairs...or you will have no real growth on the hair that has recently started growing in. You'll just retain that fuzzy look, because you keep trimming everything trying to "catch up". LOL

    • @DaveThompsonfairlife4all
      @DaveThompsonfairlife4all 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Practicerecordings I need all the advice I can get. Grown my hair for first time in my life in my 40's. No idea what I'm doing! Will leave it up to my hair dresser until my hair is long enough to focus on and bring in front of my face. I've got a lot of crappy damaged hair I'm trying to grow out, so got a few hair cuts ahead of me until I reach my full potential. Not that you needed to hear my story....

    • @Practicerecordings
      @Practicerecordings 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dave Thompson Well, I will say that what is going on inside...will be your best approach, eat well, lots of water, and taking supplements will really make a difference. Also, find some good products, nothing expensive...just things that ease you through the transition, and also are not drying or stripping your hair. I personally have baby fine hair, with lots of wave and some curl...and it's moody as all hell. LOL I get a lot of electrical static, and it's so easy to weigh it down...so it ends up looking flat and greasy, if I am not careful. So I opt for a shampoo/conditioner recommended by dermatologists, and then a light leave-in with hemp, argan oil, etc. Kind of tames the frizzies and makes my hair softer and easier to manage.

    • @DaveThompsonfairlife4all
      @DaveThompsonfairlife4all 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Practicerecordings
      That's good advice...thanks. I am doing that though, as have been studying hair care quite a bit for the last few weeks. I was letting life get me down these last few years, but then I decided I wanted long hair! lol You gotta be a positive person and keep eating well to get good hair. Been taking loads of supplements too, but my body decided to reject the fish oil tablets I'd been taking for a few weeks, by giving me a skin allergy. Got some cod liver oils instead, and hope I won't have a problem with them, Good multi-vit, sea kelp, Silica complex, Saw palmetto and fish oil are my new supplements, but I am sure I'm over-doing it. You could buy and take so much in the hope it helps hair, but it's my fault for not growing my hair when I was younger. I've got some Aussies leave-in conditioner, but it doesn't make it look that great, but it's not important if it's helping to protect it. Also bought some Tresemme keratin smooth shine spray, which actually makes my hair nice and soft, but I wanted to ask you..is it actually any good for hair even if I'm not heat styling it? I need to add something to it after washing, otherwise it all flops over my face :(

    how come the hairs that pop out are broken ones? couldn't it just be hair that had shed and the short hair is a new one growing to replace it? I've always wondered how you tell the difference 😊

    • @AhhhSukeSuke
      @AhhhSukeSuke 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That IS true- you do have a valid point. However........ hairs that have weakened/split ends break as well, ending up in shorter strands. Ionno. Either way, Ellebangs is suggesting that we could snip only a tiny bit off (maybe 2 cm? barely anything at all- something that'd grow back in a week anyway, lol)

    • @sunkissedspiderbug5957
      @sunkissedspiderbug5957 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      most of the time it's new growth but it definitely can be breakage. if you see a hair has shed, if it has a white bulb at the end of it it's normal, if it doesn't it's breakage.

  • @liltecful
    @liltecful 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh. My. God. Although I always air-blow my hair and almost never use heat on it I get A LOT of breakage because my hair is very very very fine. I have always been very reluctant to cut my hair at home, because I wear layers and I always felt like I would mess it up, so I was stuck to either spend a lot of money in the salon or wear not-that-great hair. You saved me with this tip, I just did it at home and it took me like 10 min and my hair looks fabulous. Thank you!

    I've been wanting to find a method like this for a while now. I used dusting on my hair and I noticed the difference instantly. I can blow dry my hair and didn't need to straighten it or curl it. The best part was I kept the length!

  • @karogod

    The best thing EVER that helped my dry ends from splitting was to soak them with flax seed water after washing (you boil water with flax seeds and you get a gel, then use just a bit of it, add some water, mix it in a small bowl and dip the hair in it, no rinsing after). It moisturizes my hair like no hair conditioner could. I really recommend it! I don;t need to use any oils anymore, any conditioner. And it's suuuuper cheap.

    • @IamMissPronounced
      @IamMissPronounced 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      kek thinning out your hair requires "shaving" some hairs out, this is definitely not the same thing. She explained exactly why the top layer of hair will _most likely_ be the most damaged, not that every single hair on top is broken. There's a clear distinction between young hairs and split hairs, ffs.

    I always so very much enjoy your videos. As for dusting, on my curly hair, most of the pieces that stick out do not have split ends. They're just new hair or broken lengths. So most splits are toward the bottom. I admit my hair is still recovering from a lousy salon dusting and awful spotty highlights. I was so disappointed that I've been touching up and trimming my own hair using your instructions--for about a year. I'm glad to know you are not the sort of stylist who just chops off hair if a client doesn't want to lose length. By the way, dhe top you're wearing is beautiful. Does it run large, small?

      Same here! It's heavy, easily tangled, gets caught in things, takes forever to dry...but it's our crowning glory. I do a lot of braids and buns, anything that minimizes tangles. It seems like the longer my hair gets, the more dandruff I get. I use Matrix about once or twice a week and use a boar brush most of the time because I'm guaranteed dandruff as soon as my hair drys from washing and I always have to wash tubside because it's so floppy. I blame dandruff on chlorides in our city water and my old age (33).
      This is TrueSTM's mom. Didn't feel like changing accounts.

    Been air drying my hair lately since it seemed to help my hair style better and brush out better as well. Glad to hear you say to air drying is better. Will keep air drying it then styling it cause it seems to help my frizzy and easily-tangled hair brush out better.

    Have you tried velaterapia? When I visited São Paulo, my friend took me to her mother's hair salon, and she swore by this technique for split ends. I swear my hair felt so soft, and looked really healthy afterwards. I was second guessing going through with it, when I was told they would be burning my hair with a candle, but it really does work! I guess you can call it a type of dusting..?

    No, not all the hairs that pop out are split and unhealthy hair, so that was a bit misleading. I tried the method since watching this and definitely didn't cut every hair that popped out, just the ones that were clearly split and frayed. If you do it, twist a section of hair, cut, then twist it the other way and cut, then repeat if you want. It's much more thorough. And do it somewhere with a lot of light where you can really see the bad hair. I did it outside in the sunlight.
    The dusting method is actually very cool. You can tell you've made progress when you run your fingers down the lock of hair and it feels smooth at the ends instead of rough.

    Hair only grows half an inch a month on average, so basically if you are trimming every 6-8 weeks you are cutting off all the length it has gained. So your hair will stay at the same length. That's fine if you want to keep it a particular length, but if you want to grow your hair longer it won't do. Besides if your hair splits every six to eight weeks, your hair must be in bad condition and you would be better off quitting heat treatment etc.

    Thank you so much for giving me hope! Sounds really sad but hair is one of the first things that people see and it's not that different to having bad acne, if you don't feel confident or just know that your hair is dull/limp... you're going to feel pretty crap about yourself. My parents said I had horrible flat hair since I was a child and I guess I had a little complex! 12 years of seeing different hairdressers (worldwide) and still no-one seemed to 'get' my hair! I would leave the salon or their house really disappointed. THANK YOU Silvia for the past year, I have been using your tutorials and listening to you, you make so much sense and finally got the long layered hair of my dreams (with some volume!) thanks to you. Made such a big difference to my confidence and well... life. Ps you and Adam are super cute together

    Hair is dead matter, it won't grow faster for cutting it and you can never really fix split ends without cutting them off. There are obviously things you can do to prevent split ends though, and things to make your hair look healthier.

    • @jenniferpaquin8256
      @jenniferpaquin8256 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      +Lisa Persson Yes, and her technique for 'finding' split ends by looking for short hairs doesn't make any sense. A short hair is most likely new growth so it's pointless to trim more off of it. My breakage and split ends are always towards the ends of my hair and that's because the ends are weaker from so many months/years of styling. And I spot them because the breakage exposes the cuticle (usually a whitish/beige color.) The hair literally splits so it's easy to spot running your fingers through your hair and looking at it.

    • @vwsz
      @vwsz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Lisa Persson hair is not dead matter.

    • @IschysSyrra
      @IschysSyrra 9 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      +0r0pher It is, according to facts. Educate yourself.

    • @vwsz
      @vwsz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Lisa Persson So the hair can indicate about a persons health but it's dead matter? Hair is an extension of your nervous system. Everything your body has is for a reason, beauty is not that reason. Your body in it's origin is made to survive. Educate yourself.

    • @IschysSyrra
      @IschysSyrra 9 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      +0r0pher Yes, the follicle is "alive" and produces the hair, that's how you can see people's health in their hair. All depending on how the follicles build the dead matter, what the hair is built from, you can see lacking of minerals etc.
      Hair is protecting important areas (for example vagina from chafing) and especially before evolving into what we are today, kept us warm. The body wants to protect and keep warm the most important organ of them all, the brain. Hence the head hair. If you wanna suggest it's for looks that's up to you, don't bring me into that.
      According to facts hair is dead matter and you won't sound any smarter from repeating my words. Quite the opposite to be honest, when you're spewing uneducated faulty opinions as facts. You could have avoided making such a stubborn childish fool out of yourself if you'd just googled these facts from the start, but no, you wanted to argue. And look where you are now.
      Educate yourself.

    The dusting was super helpful. I have been going in manually and cutting the splits at the bottom so this is very very helpful to know that this is how I should be cutting instead. For some reason the splits have been happening within the hair shaft so I have no clue what to do there, other than chop my hair off. The frizz is incredibly bad but I have naturally curly dry hair that requires soo much moisture. The day of a hair shower, my hair is gorgeously curly and not frizzy but the day after it literally goes dry and ugly again. I can't wash it too often due to the dryness so I have switched to oiling it and leaving in the oil for days. This has significantly and dramatically improved my hair, giving it shine and life again. However, the splits never end. I don't know if it's a hormonal thing or what. I am starting to think it's my Babyliss hair curler which I use like once a month and I literally see dramatic breakage after using this. I think it's the hot tool for sure. I am switching to T3 Single Pass hair curler to attempt to stop all this breakage but really not sure if this will do the trick, combined with locking in moisture after towel drying and leaving the oil in for days, and the dusting plus hair trims every 3 months. I also switched my shampoo and conditioner to a nicer more salon-worthy version. This is all so frustrating but the scalp massages have been helping grow my hair and oiling the scalp as well. Now it's just the splits that worry me. Any help you could provide here will be extremely useful. Thank you!

    The last past years I've been trying to grow out my hair as much as I can. But without result. My hair looked dry and flat even though I had products to prevent dryness. A few months ago I decided to cut it all off because it was so frustrating and no hairdresser chould ever give me any answers to why my hair always looked so damp. My problem is probably split ends and breakage on the lengths of my hair, and reacenlty I've been trying out "dusting" and it works amazingly :) Hopefully I can grow it out again! :D

    I use TALAVERA SPLIT-ENDER PRO every 6 - 12 weeks for 2 years now.
    It snips 4 or 8mm of each strand of hair automatically.
    Very easy to use - like a flat iron -, does a great job . Exist in cheap version for private home-use.
    However, avoid over-using it as it tends to thin the locks :
    Then the ends grow thin, so keep on trimming / dusting at your hairdresser to maintain shape and thickness.

      but she actually said your hair grows faster if you get it trimmed. I went to Cosmetology School a very long time ago and I learned that the hair grows from within the follicle in the scalp area.. So what you do to the end of your hair does not actually accelerate growth. which it's what everyone seems to be saying but, she needs to clarify.

    I cutted off my ends for the first time in six years, now is it butt length. I use oils and so on to protect the hair, I also use leave in conditioner and wash my hair once a week. I have done this for 3-4 years and my hair grows like crazy and i haven't used heat since 2008 ( prom, with heat protectant spray ).
