The loop knot is a must I agree. I have seen wary Carp taking the fly so softly on the surface that a normal knot will not sufficiently let the fly move into the mouth. Line blocks the fly from going into the mouth and carp rejects fly. Loop knot allows the fly to swing easily into the mouth. Great tips!
Brilliant quality tips Matt. Love the idea of the perfection loop on the hook. (Gotta admit I haven’t thought of that!) We in the UK have a bit of a drought going on at the moment so personally I’m giving the fishing a bit of a rest to let the fish rest up a bit. But I am chomping at the bit to get out!! Stay safe , laters Dave.
A little tip, especially since you reco short leaders. Dont use the hook keeper. It will double over your fly line and leave a kink. Use whatever upper guide so you fly line is inside the tip top.
Great tip! I don’t have a hook keeper on my rods so I loop it under the fly reel only when I’m in transit or between casting locations. If you leave them rigged sitting like that, like you said, you will get a kink for sure. 💯
6 wt or 8 wt depending on the size of fish you are targeting. I personally fish a 6 wt fiberglass rod. 6wt will cover you in most scenarios and get you started. Try to find one with a fighting butt so you have leverage when you hook a gold bus! 💪
This is a great question but a hard one to answer because hook sizing, in fly tying and fishing in general, there is no real standard. I will be doing videos on this subject specifically soon. Here is a link to the hooks I use. Hope this helps! Carp fly hooks - amzn.to/3JQgzKc
I have fished carp for years. When I bait fish, the carp are finicky. Getting them to take a bait is difficult. It is amazing that such a wary fish likes big gaudy flies.
My flies just came in. Very nice. Excited to use them and great advice. Searching for my first carp on the fly.
Thank you! The first one might get you fully addicted. Send me pictures!

Spot on! 💯 Glad to hear someone else has caught onto that trick also! Thanks for the comment.
Hey I forget your name but you were a substitute teacher for my class. I think you were a sub for Mrs. Kortis' class
I did substitute teach for a while! Hope you are doing well!

Thanks Dave! Fishing during a drought can be bang or bust. Nothing wrong with letting them rest.
Hello Matt! Great instructional video! It looks like I have a lot to work...
Thank you!
I just discovered your channel. As a dedicated on carp the fly angler, thanks for providing this high quality advice. Earned a sub.

Thanks for the advice . I did have a short leader but didn’t have a net to land one and lost it after fighting it for 11 minutes 😅
That's always tough when you have kept them buttoned for that long. We have all been there. The struggle is real. 💯
Just started fishing for carp what size rod would you suggest

Great tips thank you. What hook size would you recommend?

You would be surprised, when presented well, what flies carp are willing to take. Challenging but rewarding fish!
I cannot take advice from someone with so little needless gadgets on a necklace.
Nail knot tool bro?
Bwahahaha lololololol
