I went to Marine Corps boot camp in 1979. The country’s Vietnam experience seem to influence training. Back then you went straight to your primary MOS school after boot camp. I did not go to infantry school. The small amount of infantry training in boot camp seemed to be rushed. I felt like we were pushed through it. Boot camp was still a challenge. It was tough physically and emotionally. I think it was an excellent idea to start sending everyone to infantry school. I think that started in the 90’s. I spent the next year after boot camp in tech school, eventually becoming a RADAR tech for the rest of my enlistment. I can’t complain about that as I worked in the defense electronics industry for the next 35 years or so as an engineer. Worked on a lot of interesting projects and I owe all of that to the Marines. Much respect to you as you are a professional warrior and obviously skilled at your job. I admire the sacrifices you make to fight for causes you believe in. Semper Fi.

If I didn't, I could die, people around me could die, or I could lose my entire livelihood that I spent four years of my life attaining with one mistake. When I was becoming a merchant mariner, I never understood why guys around me didn't take some aspects like ship handling seriously or at least weren't trying their hardest to wrap their head around some of the more important material. There was some hard and complicated shit that I just had to buckle down and figure out, and it wasn't easy. But I had to do it. Otherwise, someone could get killed, and it'd be my responsibility.

For me the hardest part of ”boot camp” was really the darkness and cold. Went in in januari in the northenmost camp of sweden. Also, the terrain was tough in summer when you couldn’t ski, it’s endless swamps and mountains. Also camp was in the middle of nowhere with barely coverage for the phone, so it was a bit like a prison. But i loved it.

I joined RM straight from high school. Which is 16 years old in the UK. I started my process while sill in school.
I grew up so much over our 8 months of basic training. 4 years later I left and they paid for me to go uni (resettlement ). I think between the military and them uni I got such a wide breath of mental growth.
With both being so different. I think I got a great foundation for life by 25. I think the military makes you grow up fast and teaches you a lot about yourself and how to control yourself. With the RM, your not just a number, your taught that you are as important as everyone. You may be the one that has to take the responsibility and how to take control of any given situation. It's probably not for everyone, but I think everyone should have to do a few years of military service. 2 years is enough to get a good understanding and learn the ropes and grow up. Today's teens could do with a bit of shock theopy about the world doesn't revolve around them. They need to offending more.
The up side of national service. For the nation, is if there is an international issue, you have a relatively trained foundation of manpower. Your not starting form scratch. You can draft them in and, as long as fit. Go straight into tactical and more advanced training.

Hi I am from Singapore where we have mandatory national service for 2 years. When I was doing my national service, I was placed in the Army. After I finished my basic, I got my vocation which was the infantry. I agree with your point that the military really helped me to grow up and be aware of my priorities in life. It also taught me many life skills like mental perseverance and how to carry oneself. All in all it may have sucked but i cannot deny being in the Army really helped me develop as an adult.

I'm glad that your experiences were such positive ones for your own growth! I was a mortarman in the Army for a few years and it definitely changed me. I always call those experiences "the best of the worst times." I honestly suffered a lot being a grunt, but that suffering also made me grow in different ways.
As you said, the military kind of forces you to grow up. The foundation of skills, traits, and assets that they cultivate is impressive. Not everyone heeds the lessons which means not every person will come out of the military the same way. If it wasn't for my time in service, I wouldn't have the drive, the willpower, the discipline, and the mental resilience that I still possess to this day. The self-confidence that the military breeds is otherworldly. Everything is task-based so you're constantly knocking out these tasks that help you with your own goal-setting. I really do miss being in, but I did my time and it's now somebody else's turn. Thank you for your service brother :)

The man who inspired their revolution, Öcalan, USED to believe in authoritarian communism in like the 1980's, but now believes in eco-socialism and libertarian-socialism - which is an egalitarian and libertarian version of communism.
Rojava is and has always been more inspired by anarcho-syndicalism than authoritarian-communism - The focus on people being FREE from tyranny and oppression. @@memenadekhanh3992
It might be worth you even reading the wikipedia page for Rojava, or speaking to a Kurdish person. I know you saw the anti-fascist action flag and thought "oh these guys must be like the USSR' but that couldn't be further from the truth
In rojava, every position of power is co-held by a man and a woman and they are attempting to build a gender equal, secular, democratic society in north and eastern syria. They fought off the FAR more authoritarian ISIS. They are a beautiful experiment in radical democracy in one of the most authoritarian regions in the world.

The training was useful and the motivation to be better is always important, but the frat-boy culture centered on being a killing machine did alot to screw up alot of veterans entering the civilian workforce. Once you're into an environment where character and behavior counted more than skillsets, life becomes so much harder. Humps are the hardest part of the military. Especially if you are at the rear(always go weapons platoon, you get to be at the front on basically all humps in gari), in the Marines being at the rear meant you were running the whole hump. Full packs, FULL fucking packs, at night sometimes, on rutted out trails through woods, no NVG or anything, moon bean on your harness, that's it. Dude's dropping to sprained ankles and shit like there's no tomorrow. That happened to us on Parris Island during a hump while we were doing the crucible. We were the last platoon , and even our drill instructors started getting salty. Only time I saw them get like that. We got all those mother fuckers back though when they called our platoon out during graduation as honor platoon. lol

@dankdolphin-biggles9567 it may also be because the training is broken up differently. US basic training is not much more than what it says on the tin: basic instruction on how to march, recognize rank, salute, shoot, etc., then sends new mil members to further training schools for their specific job in the field. Other nations' initial training may include more career or field specific training in the primary course. Even after basic and technical training, US military members are generally not considered fully trained and qualified until months or years later.

It's why females no matter how fit collapse. Seen it so many times. Weighted humps are far an away harder than anything physically in the military. It's why delta force selection and sas selection is long, heavy brutal humps to test. Powerful muscular legs, strong corps and grit is the key.

As i did with the age of 19 in 2001 my mandatory Service at the Bundeswehr i was also one of the smalest guy in my Company. At our first 6km March our instructors had the idea to let the smalest guy with the smalest legs to be the first person of each group to define the speed of the group. Problem was i just was fresh in love at that day after the march we would be the first time after three weeks to be allowed to leave the baracks for a weekend back at home where i would see my girlfriend of that time again...2 failure of our "instructors" to allow each team to make them ready as soon after they returned from the march back to the baracks... So my hormones kicked in like doom guys anger when his music starts... So long story short we started at second last group of the company and came in first, also my team hated me but could understand me at the complete same time... So the lecture is: Do not ever let a guy fresh in love lead to define the speed of a marching group :D

I went through Marine Corps boot camp in 1981. The DI’s use to punch and kick everyone. One recruit pissed into a spare pillow on the first night because he was to afraid to go to the head. The next morning the DI slapped each one of us in the face with the pillow then PT’d our butts in the rose garden until the idiot that did it confessed. Of course we hated him after that. I then went into Artillery FDC school, but was assigned to a Target Acquisition Battery where I trained in Survey, Forward Observer, and Naval Gunfire Liaison. I then did 3 posts as a Marine Security Guard at embassies in Africa and New Zealand. I got married and left the Corps and did 7 months in the New Zealand Army. I missed the Corps so I went back in as Cobra and Huey Mechanic. I went to Desert Shield/Storm and when we came home, I was sent to Special Operations Training Group where I became an Arctic Instructor. I loved it because I learned to Ski and Ice climb. Went to Greenland 4 times, Norway, Utah, Wisconsin, and Vermont. From there I got recruiting orders. I then went back to the Fleet and volunteered to become a Drug and Alcohol Counselor at Paris Island, SC. In order to get my bachelors degree. I went into the Corps there and retired from the Corps there as a Gunnery Sergeant. To say the Corps doesn’t use you where they need you is an understatement! The theme is “Grow where you are planted”. I always hated humping as well!

I hiked with 20kg, 15km in a literal a storm in Scotland. Scotland is fucking brutal. Due to the micro drops and fierce winds, all my layers were soaked, so I couldn’t afford to take a break longer than 3 minutes, as I would have cooled down too much and risk hypothermia. At the end of the hike, I still got hypothermia.
I slept in snow without a tent in the French alps, after a 6km uphill hike through snow with 18kg, and a snowboard.
I have hiked for 11 days with a friend in the mountains of Kazakhstan close to Ridder, with gear which broke after day 2 and a continuous known muscle pain I had in my back, carrying 30kg, surrounded by grizzly bears.
All of those hikes were my holidays.

@Aurora-bv1ys Radioulnar Synostis. It's a very very rare condition less than 100 ppl alive have it. My radius and ulna are fused on the side closest to my elbow by a boney tissue similar to bone but more soft. The cause is unknown and there's not treatment that can't get rid of it. If a surgeon cut through the boney tissue it would just grow back. Because of my fused radius and ulna my range of motion in my hands is limited. Supination motions are impossible for me to do, so I can't even hold a gun properly for accuracy. Handguns are easier but I'm still unable to do the weaver stance, I can't put my palm under the grip for extra stability.

I was in the Legion and yes we got some very basic training but almost no proper badly needed combat training. There was a lack of everything, live rounds blank practice rounds, RPG rockets, and we did not get any good realistic combat training. It was a lot of directives of what training we were gonna do everyday yet more often we just ended up marching to the ranges and wherever else we were supposed to do combat and weapons training and then just having to stand there and freeze for hours only to be told the exercise is cancelled go eat and then come back and then the same thing happens, we wait and wait and then getting told, exercise cancelled. This would repeat day in and day out, we sometimes go lucky and got to at least shoot 4 or 8 rounds and zero our rifles. But I did not consider that training any real quality combat training. Also we were put on a field with a single little classroom being the only building, so practicing urban combat was impossible. And for me with merely being a simple Home guard Medic my specialty was never combat. Yet I was a rifleman in Ukraine not primarily a medic first hand. So I needed as much combat training I as I could physically get my hands on. I did not feel prepared for the job as I was supposed to do once I deployed to Kharkiv. Yet I chose the Legion because they promised a little bit of training and I wanted to try and get as much as possible to be as prepared as possible. Yet I loved my time in Ukraine and I want to come back and pick of where I left

not everyone starts with good fitness... better to motivate those that fail than question it.

Whether or not you received good proper training for a month in the International Legion in the beginning depended on which Batalion of the Legion you were in. Mine was absolute shit, we barley got any needed Combat training, there was a lack of everything and our command structure did not function either. So it was a whole lot of waiting waiting, Sweating physical training to get in shape and a majority of classroom lessons ( which were all of course good and needed ) but as for actual preparing for Combat in all environments there was barley anything, and only one tiny building in a giant old Soviet tank training field so no Urban environments to practice in.
