  • Always Board Never Boring doesn't really do historical wargaming, but in order to play and review the 15th Century skirmish tabletop game, Force of Virtue, he picked up a box of 28mm European Infantry Mercenaries from Perry Miniatures. In this video, he unboxes and reviews the box set, and then builds a couple of example miniatures.
    Here are some time stamps if you need them:

    Love the Mercenaries! They're what I used to make my first human warband for Mordheim, when I returned to the hobby in 2020. Currently I'm using the Wargames Atlantic Conquistadors, but the Mercenaries still have a place in my heart (even though they got slaughtered by the undead)

      It's a nice box of miniatures. I need to dig up a copy of Mordheim at some point.

    It sounds like a single box will provide plenty of variety of poses for the game in which you’re planning to use them but just in case anyone wants to expand beyond the bodies provided (which are, incidentally, identical to those in the Wars of the Roses infantry set), Steel Fist Miniatures produce some metal bodies that are designed to be used with Perry arms and heads. These come in packs of six ‘dollies’ - one of men-at-arms and two of retainers / militia. SFM also produce complete figures for the period.
    In case this isn’t enough, Warsteel Miniatures currently have a Kickstarter for STL’s, also designed to be compatible with the Perry range.

      Yes, one box is more than enough for Force of Virtue - the game was designed around a one-box entry point for getting started - but more options is always good. This box doesn't have much in the way of swords, for example, and you only get pavises and bucklers.

    You can see where the Perrys got the inspiration from back in the day for Dogs of War.

    Looking good so far. Historicals tend to be be fast to paint up, even really colorful uniforms once you get going on them.

      The good thing about Force of Virtue (for me) is you don't need too many figures. A starting warband can be anything from 1 to maybe 12. My two warbands combined was only 11 figures.

    I got a box of Foot Knights 1450 - 1500 by them a few months back - cracking little miniatures

      Their minis are really neat. And it makes a nice change from my usual stuff.

    I think it was fantastic they added liveries with the sets;very well thought out. I don't mind mixing 28mm with a little larger models as we just figure that not everyone is the same height IRL. Great video as always.

      It's a massive help for someone like me, as I just don't know enough about this time period. I also don't tend to worry about scale too much. When I'm playing something like Rangers of Shadow Deep I will often have miniatures from several ranges on the table at once. During gameplay, it's rare that any of them are so out of scale as to look completely abnormal.

    Ooh, that's giving me flashbacks of "Sharpe's"!
    Parts of that show still perplex me...
    Still these looks great!

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The only Sharpe I know is Sean Bean. I have always told myself that one day when I have unlimited time I will build and paint a Napoleonic army (almost certainly using Perry Miniatures). Just that unlimited time causing the issue...

    The paint jobs looked good! I guess those two brothers were quite a handful growing up. I hope momma's proud of her boys. 😄

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks. The smaller scale means you can get away with a bit more, and lean a bit more into washes to get things done quickly. As slightly deranged dogs of war, I don't think these two are the sort even a mother could love.

    Along with some of the other suggestions, if yoi want more sword and spear options look at thr Perry french Agencout peasents and knights box. Which work well with the italian and Spanish force for force of virtue wince they have sword snd spearmen.
    Of course there is always the option of picking up aomw of the perry bros medieval metals from their online shop.

      Of course the War of the Roses Box set also provides some nice variation as well. And don't forget the men at arms boxes both mounted and dismounted. And the light cavalry box is good for bits as well.

    For half a second I thought you were going Turnip28 on us...Excited to see the Force of Virtue content. I love indy tabletop games so this should be right up my alley

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Turnip 28 is the kind of whacky weirdness that appeals to me, but no. I'm not looking at exploring that game at the moment. Force of Virtue should be on the channel (all things being equal) before the month is out.

    I fear that Force of Virtue won't live up to the quality and value of the miniatures it uses, but I will wait for your review.

      I will refrain from spoilers, but will say I am looking forward to talking about Force of Virtue. Coverage should be on the channel before the end of the month.

    Use them for various Warhammer Old World armies and they make mounted knights, light horse, bill and bows too and have two metal ranges to go with them

    • @dm51964
      @dm51964 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can also use the heads from the other plastic box sets from this range too and it gives even more variation to mix and they make separate heads for Tudor, Italian and Swiss in metal to use on these

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, Perry Miniatures have an excellent range. Force of Virtue is very small scale for warbands and is designed so you can hit the ground running with just this mercenaries box (thankfully). I don't believe there is a single option from the starter set armies that you can't make from the one box. However, they are adding mounted units and other stuff to the system.

    Would have been nice with Stormcast and a more normally proportioned person in that comparison.

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Stormcast are huge. They are fantasy Primaris marines, so nothing is in scale with them. I tried to pick normal humans for the comparisons - the exception was the goblin because I didn't have any LotR humans painted up.

      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Tired day, tired comment :)
      The thing I intended to say was:
      Would have been good with a few minis like Stormcast and maybe cities or some other faction to give most people a common reference point.
      Don't ask me how this comment turned into the old comment 🤣

    • @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
      @AlwaysBoardNeverBoring  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was trying to pick something comparable for the comparison - human sized characters. These mercs are actually a little small for 25mm bases, while Stormcast are on 40mm bases so the difference is huge. I would say, with the exception of Anima Tactics, all of my selections are from popular ranges. Sorry you didn't find it more helpful; I'll try to drop a picture of a merc with a stormcast on my Instagram later today for you.
