- After a great afternoon at Duxford it's time to head home to Enstone.
A fairly quick flight, with busy Luton Radar ATC. There was a problem with our coms with readability 3. A better approach at Enstone, but it seems like I have forgotten how to flare! What do you think?

Hi Adam, great video. The gear cam as you touch down is revealing. Here's a little trick from my flight instructing bag of tricks that you might want to try. Short, or non existent, holdoffs are often an indicator that there's a little sub-conscious voice in the pilot's head that is eagerly telling the pilot to get the plane on the ground ASAP. To overcome this it may be useful to practice landing without aiming to land. I don't know how long your local runway is, but find a nice long runway for your aeroplane, for 4 seat lighties >1000m would be good. Now fly some circuits, but you are going to do go-arounds, not landings. Fly a normal circuit pattern but at around flare height set around 2100rpm (slow cruise speed power) and fly parallel to the runway--just like when you did with precautionary landings in your pilot training to enable you to inspect a field (but you won't be inspecting the field this time), Perform a go around well before the end of the runway, maybe around 1/2 way down the runway. Repeat the circuits until you are comfortable with this procedure. Once you are comfortable, then repeat but this time fly down to around 1/2 your flare height, same procedure, fly parallel to the ground at your slow cruise speed. Repeat this procedure going lower on each pass until you are overflying the runway and going around from hold off height. When you are happy with your go-arounds from holdoff height, change the procedure slightly and slowly take a little power off (maybe set around 1800-2000RPM) and set yourself the aim of flying as close to the ground as possible without actually touching the ground. I have seen pilots with problems in landings do the smoothest landings they ever did at the end of this process. Hopefully that will train your mind to be less concerned with getting the plane on the ground and rather keep flying it until it's ready to settle onto the ground. If you haven't done precautionary searches or go-arounds for a while, maybe it might be a good idea to go back and do some of those dual first.

@@PrivatePilotFlightVlogs Since you can't recall having done precautionary searches in your training, I would suggest going back and doing it dual. It was mandated in Australia when I was teaching. There's a good writeup here: www.studyflight.com/precautionary-landing (there's lots of other sites as well) The main concern I have if you haven't done this before is speed control when you are near the ground. I used to use the low pass technique for teaching landings with students, but I would control the power while the trainee focused on controlling height. I wouldn't want to see a video where you try this for the first time and it goes wrong. If you are current with precautionary searches then you should be able to do it on your own, otherwise I suggest you get some dual practice first.

Always enjoy your videos Adam! I only have 500hrs on the PA28 so I’m no expert, but I think you’ll find that your landings will improve if you’re a little more disciplined with your speed on approach. You really need to nail that 65kts on short final in this aircraft, otherwise you’ll end up putting it down flat and early. At flare height, gently close the throttle and squeeze back the yoke so that she lands in a nose up attitude with the stall-warner sounding. You touched down here at 70kts which is a bit fast and it could cause the aircraft to wheelbarrow on the nose-wheel. Hope this helps!! 👍🏻

That's really interesting to read, IIRC in a Cessna 150/152, 65kts is 'staying alive' also. So flaring out onto the mains, with just a trickle of power on, as the speed has already been set on base to finals/finals? Is the stall warning coming on then just an occasional consequence of the flare, rather than confirmation of the flare? Tbf the landing looked a little flat, but not as if it would wheelbarrow, but on some grass strips/farm strips, keeping the nose wheel off and protecting the oleo is also key to a good landing, I think that landing could have been problematic in that scenario. I'm not an expert though nor an instructor, just time spent with and watching/listening to others.
Muso Seven The C152 feels very different in the flare. It’s huge fowler-flaps produce much more drag and the high wing interacts less with ground effect.
Looks like a lovely day out and Duxford is such a great place to visit. Landing's definitely getting better and I look forward to my next trip with you.

Another great video Adam. Really enjoyed this one. Did you find out if the radio interference was a problem with the radio unit or was it something else. I’ve heard a number of people mention that when trying to transmit, some microphones on certain headsets don’t play ball with face masks. Did you try the P2 mic too, I once had what I thought was a radio failure which turned out to be an issue with the P1 transmit button.
With the flare, my instructor back at Biggin Hill always told me “forget about the flare, that’s for airliners .. if you keep your eyes on the end of the runway and your speed is correct you will flare naturally”.

I don't know if you have a COM2 radio in that plane, but it's always worth giving it a try if you do. The aerial for the Arrow I fly is on the top for COM1 and bottom for COM2 - can make all the difference sometimes.

Are all the center stripes / runways offset to the right, as in your landing?
Hey no not normally in my experience. I’m not entirely sure why it is like that. I will try and find out.
It sounded like you have a problem with your PTT switch or wiring as it was poor audio on the side tone, so not a TX or RX problem.
As for your landings, don't think of it as a flare but as a hold off (you appear to be flying into the ground with too much vertical speed), if you find you are floating a long way down the runway then that would indicate you have too much speed at the numbers. I am not an instructor but a instructor pointed that out as a comon error for trike UC pilots, that us Tail Draggers can not do and not bounce (his reason for thinking TD pilots take off and land better). He may have a point as I have made a few rubbish landings in a tri-gear and got away with it!

Can I ask, when calling up Enstone Traffic? Should calls start with 'Enstone Traffic' and end with 'Enstone Traffic', is the American protocol adopted in the UK now? I was trying to hear where the other 1-2 aircraft joining Enstone were. Or is it the way that the film is edited that left out the 'Enstone Traffic' part?

Super quick, in real time it was 35 mins.
I believe it’s an US protocol to say “Enstone Traffic” at the end of a radio call, we do not adopt that in the UK. I did cut the video quite a lot as I approached the circuit so apologies if it didn’t make sense.

Don't think of it as a flare...just think of it as leveling off with no power. The flare will happen automatically.
