    I never stack jars of canned food. I buy those wire shelves that are a pint or quart high, put them over my jars to have more space.

    • @TheHouseAndHomestead
      @TheHouseAndHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We try to avoid stacking jars if possible, but due to the space we have, we do choose to stack one row (max) on top of the bottom row sometimes, always being careful not to stack any larger jars on top of smaller jars as the weight can cause the seals to break.
      I’ve never heard of/seen the metal shelves you mentioned. My husband has said he wants to build in extra shelves there but three years in and other projects are still taking up his time. Please do share a link to them if you’re able!

      @@TheHouseAndHomestead This is a link to a pricey one. I purchased mine at Marshall's. I paid $4.99 for it. Dollar stores have them also, but not as sturdy. www.amazon.com/WOSOVO-Expandable-Stackable-Organizer-Multipurpose/dp/B07R9PMG11/ref=sr_1_20_sspa?crid=5EX1W9MXLUX7&dchild=1&keywords=under+cabinet+wire+shelf+organizer&qid=1610310923&sprefix=wire+organizer+under+cabinet%2Caps%2C197&sr=8-20-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzUUtHUUIwM044STlWJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMDg4MjU1MjA0MjJUME1SUEw3RSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwOTQ4MjY0MzhTRzFHNERMWTVXMSZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX210ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

      I also use wire shelves for my dishes but when I set up a bigger pantry I will be utilizing more or making my shelves can ‘heights’ my cans are hidden all under my bed and also in my closet and then my pantry and wherever else they can fit. But we may decide to sell this house and move again so I can have a real pantry someday.

      Good idea, but how the weight problem? We used 3 industrial shelving units and made 2 with more shelves closer together.

    I keep track of everything on a spreadsheet - which is a whole lot easier than emptying your pantry shelves.

    • @TheHouseAndHomestead
      @TheHouseAndHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I use my pantry inventory sheets as my spread sheet. But I still have to take everything out to see how much I have left and consolidate into different jars. I actually really enjoy taking everything out and reorganizing/cleaning. It helps me start the new year off on the right foot.

    Bricks stacked and piece of plywood- makeshift shelf. Make sure it is not in high traffic area and not earthquake zone.

      @TheHouseAndHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We're actually in a major Earthquake zone. We'll be ripping out the shelves and rebuilding ones that better suit our needs at some point. In the meantime, the extra metal shelving units work great!

    How nice to see a pantry tour that’s not soft porn! 😢😢 sad some gals do that. Your food stock is wonderful, I feel so good knowing my family is looked after, especially in these times of lockdown. PS, I use those cheap wire shelves, or racks, so I can ‘stack’ some shorter pints & my half-pints, without them actually being on top of each other. Stacking the little ones leaves enough room for the big ones. Yourglass jars are also so smart for heading off a sudden insect invasion!😱😱😱

    If you line your shelves with shelf liner, you won't have so much wear and tear on your cabinets.

    • @TheHouseAndHomestead
      @TheHouseAndHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The shelves are actually in really good condition. They would still get dirty with shelf liner (which I actually really don't love). Any wear and tear was here when we moved in. Our plan is to rip out the shelves soon and replace them with something that works better for us and fits the space better:)

      @@TheHouseAndHomestead oh no, you missed the point. You are actually taking care of your kitchen. Most people don't. They don't understand that most interior cabinets have laminent shelves that wear out quicker than the wood fronts and doors.

    I have a question can you scorch you food that your canning by ither over cook time or to high of heat when your adjusting temp cooking on electric stove and sometimes you have to stand there n make sure it does not go over the allotted weight. I canned chilli open one n it tasted a little scorched and i don't remember doing that while preparing... If you cook it 15 or 20 min past time should it scorch or if it was 15 pd of pressure instead of 11 for 6 min should it scorch?

    • @justpatty7328
      @justpatty7328 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Strong spices can turn bitter over time, giving a scorched taste too. I found basil in canning is a no-no for me. Garlic is another they warn about.

    • @TheHouseAndHomestead
      @TheHouseAndHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven't ever heard of food being scorched while in the jars. It shouldn't scorch because it's not in direct contact with the bottom of a cooking pot. As Just Patty said, it may be the herbs. Sage is another than can turn bitter once canned.

    • @TheHouseAndHomestead
      @TheHouseAndHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't oven can as it's an unsafe method of canning, and for dry goods we've never had any problems with bugs, rodents, etc.

    You’re not supposed to stack jars

  • @robinmorgan7005
    @robinmorgan7005 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Home canned food jars shouldn’t be stacked on top of each other.

    • @TheHouseAndHomestead
      @TheHouseAndHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, I know this and as soon as I was watching the video once it was all edited I knew someone would pick up on that. However we are short on space and so we choose to stack one row on top sometimes, which is the most you should ever stack, and they should be equal to or lighter than the bottom row.
      The reason you shouldn’t stack jars on top of each other is because the weight of the jars can cause the seal to break and can cause your food to spoil. We are careful of this and prepared to throw any jars away if moldy, etc. So far we have never had this issue.
