    Good news folk. I've been building my own AC filters for over 30 years and it's simple and effective. Sure, it's not as effective as the 2K$ units discussed but an incredible upgrade for virtually no money. You simply wire up a commercially available 20amp EMI/RFI filter which you can find for between $5 and $30. It takes about 10 minutes and does an amazing job. If you are comfortable fixing broken extension cords, you can wire in the filter module. All modules are similar but the important thing is to use a minimum of a 20 amp module. Any less actually wrecks the sound.

    I bought a Puritan 156 after your great advice Mickey, not from you unfortunately as I live in the UK. It made a huge difference to my system, not subtle at all. I previously used Isotek and Furman but the Puritan gave me back my dynamics and then some. Thanks Mikey 😊

    Good solid advice, Mike. I have been using Puritan PSM 156 before it got popularized by the internet community. It is an awesome device. Without Puritan in the system, the music sounds lifeless. This is type of change that once you hear it, you cannot go back, like a nice black coffee :)

    You are 100% correct about this Mikey. I fitted some DIY mains conditioners internally into every piece HiFi component I use on my system based on the DIY design exploits of Lukasz Fikus (Lampizator). They perform extremely well and everything you described when you use a good quality mains conditioner. It doesn't cost that much to implement for each item either.

    Question for Mikey.
    I have a PrimaLuna Integrated Tube Amp.
    I also use Musical Fidelity solid state separates.
    Both amps are used for 2 channel listening.
    I use a Parasound 5+ channel amp & a Marantz preamp/processor.I will definitely hook up my main source component...my OPPO Blu-ray, Streamer/DAC, El-Cheapo VRC Player & cable box.
    Finally, I have a Musical Fidelity Integrated Amplifier that powers my 7 channel speakers in my surround sound set up.
    Which of these products should be hooked up to my Puritan 156 AC Purifier? I only have 6 receptacles on the Puritan 156.
    I'm really hoping that I don't need to purchase a 2nd Puritan 156 AC Purifier. They don't come cheap.
    Thanks!

    This is a great series, Mikey, and it's getting the basics right, which pays dividends in the end.
    I didn't muck around. I have 3 20 amp dedicated lines on single receptacles. Best thing I ever did. My mono amps going to the wall straight, and the other line has my filtration for the rest of the components in my rig. This is really worth doing. You don't know what's there until you can't hear it anymore.🎧🙂👍

    • @shanestephenson8423
      @shanestephenson8423 ปีที่แล้ว

      @davidcross890 nobody's saying there isn't more to consider. But having good clean power makes an audible difference in a high-end audio system without doubt. As said above, it's one of the parts for consideration when you are building a room with a high-end audio system in it.

    • @shanestephenson8423
      @shanestephenson8423 ปีที่แล้ว

      @davidcross890 That's a very subjective statement. It very much depends on the quality of power you have circulating around in your house. How many dirty appliances polluting the power into your listening room. And further to that, depending on the quality and resolution of the equipment, you have plugged into that power. All of this is totally subjective. So doing dedicated lines is only going to help the situation, which was my original point.

  • @JLDR57
    @JLDR57 ปีที่แล้ว

    Agreed. I put in a 10 gauge circuit, all on the same leg with a wave modulator just outside the circuit board as a filter. Of course, upgraded outlets went along with it. The improvements were not subtle.

  • @BuzzardSalve

    That's what the power transformer, filter capacitors and regulators do. And if you want to mitigate noise on your ground then use balanced interconnects and equipment that has proper balanced inputs and outputs. It is not necessary to filter it out with some silly expensive contraption that doesn't do much :D LOL

  • @marckroll9544

    Back in the 90’s I was getting the ‘itch’ to upgrade something. Monster power conditioners came out, and were very affordable. Damned if it didn’t make a huge improvement. Blacker background, and tightened up bass significantly. I called my audiophile buddy, and told him to go out and get one. He had the same reaction.

    1 always use a variac set to 120v especially in summer months. Best 70 bucks you’ll ever spend. Don’t trust the variac always set the voltage with a multimeter.
    2 always utilize a home run for every amp. Never connect 2 amp on one plug.
    3 get a good spike protector.
    4 live very happily ever after and save a lot of money.

    Hello Mikey, I'm so glad I found your channel - all top notch and valuable info that resonates with me a lot... 🙂 Quick question, I plan to install a dedicated line for my hifi rig ended witn a Furutech GTX-D NCF(R) wall socket and support it with a Puritan PSM 156. My question is - as I want to build a Furutech AC chords, to save some cost at the beginning, will I be beter starting with lower grade AC plugs like FI-11(R) series combined with a top of the line DPS 4.1 cable or should I rather spend more on higher level plugs with a lower tier cable like S032 or S055. Any other recomendations on AC plugs and cables at this price tier is most welcome of course. Thank you.

      That's totally pointless. A real class A circuit draws constant power from your wall outlet, no matter what happens on either the input or the output side. Unless you are putting a Faraday cage around your listening room you can't get any improvement, neither on the low nor the high frequency end and with a Faraday cage you will mostly see a reduction of the local airport radar beam. That is the ONLY RF source I have ever been able to detect with low frequency amplifiers (but they were 0.9nV/sqrtHz scientific preamps, meaning that at most your moving coil preamp will ever notice that brutal beam). ;-)

      So what? Hospital grade mostly means that you can pour 1000ml of liquid (or something like that, I forgot the details of the standard) on top without it failing or producing dangerous leakage currants. Oh, and the box can't topple over if somebody bumps into it, either. The electrical details of these medial standards are fairly loose. It's all about operational safety of equipment in a very hectic environment with lots of motion of heavy equipment and sticky liquids. ;-)

      Puritan is non current limiting and outperforms the current limiting PS Audio, which actually makes its own form of oscillator noise from what I understand.

They asked me to leave the room, even though there were no other customers in the room. If legitimate, gold plated contact fuses are desired, there is one legitimate manufacturer with safety compliance and those can actually be purchased at far more reasonable prices from Mouser and Digikey.

    I'm sorry the only real filter is regeneration like the ps audio powerplant. All those passive filters don't regulate voltage which is by FAR more important for digital componets. Ossicaltors in all your digital gear are voltage dependent for their clock and constant voltage flux is so so so damaging.

    • @OCDHIFiGuy
      @OCDHIFiGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL, guess what ? It regenerates the noise as well... We dont live in India, so unless you have brownout problems, nobody needs voltage reg.. LOL, VXCO is old technology, TCXO was better and OCXO was best, so NO absolutely NOT. Only very old standard not really audiophile DACs use TCXO, and in todays age, the oscillators no longer use silly Quartz whatsoever.. they are much more accurate and they self adjust... so you are talking about old technology. PS regenerator is NOT what I would recommend at all...

    • @ClassifiedBrief
      @ClassifiedBrief ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OCDHIFiGuy they do NOT regenerate the noise. This is fact and can EASILY be measured with an oscilloscope. Not just the crystals but any dac using a chip the chips PLL circuit runs off voltage. Voltage regulation is huge. Go ahead make a video a/B a ps audio powerplant vs your filter. I bet you won't.

    And here you are fluffing and BSing us. There are many other speakers that have special compounds for their cabinets: Wilson, Magico, and many others, so yours isn’t the only 1 that builds like this.
    When filtering, especially for the amps, you put a veil/restriction on the sound. This is why most audiophiles don’t use filtering for their amps. Instead of filtering, I would look at power regeneration units that don’t compromise the amp
