I am an enormous Streisand fan, but when I hear her sing Memory it somehow never seems right, this will always be Elaine's song, suits her powerful voice to perfection.
Why people compare Elaine Paige and Bette Buckley is beyond me. They're each different, not better or worse. Bette Buckley is seasoned and operatic, Elaine Paige is sincere and heartfelt.
Its a different take on the character, For Paige grizabella is defeated and she evokes that unbearable sadness.for Buckley she is still fighting. Both are trying to maintain what last bit of dignity Grizabella has. These two made Cats the hit it became.
@Michael Persico the live stage show of cats is insane on all levels with the songs coming from all over the place from vaudeville swung jazz all over. It’s that craziness that makes the show so much fun.
I personally think this is her best performance. She sings so beautifully.. nobody can sing like her. She sings better live because she sings with her heart and even if she screams.. it puts a shudder down my spine..
I think this is one of Elaine's best performances, it's absolutely beautiful. Creepy just how she and Andrew were both the same age - 33 - back then...
Hi, Sean :) I think Elaine's version is way underrated, it seems like most people hate her. Personally, I think Betty Buckley's version is absolutely emotion-less, even though I am by no means a "hater". No, I haven't seen that, but I have to check it out! Thank you, Sean :)
Yes, of course they still are ;D But Elaine's odd hair made her a bit older, while Andrew looked like he had to show his ID to get alcohol at age 33 ;D
Few humans that are alive or have ever lived can sing this song in the great same style as Elaine Page. Some songs are just meant to be sung by certain people. Period.
This song and particular performance gives me hope. Ms. Elaine Paige's vocal delivery of the song here is so different from what it would later become. There's something about the passage of time - getting older, experiencing more, and hopefully, becoming stronger - that is really remarkable. When you're young, and full of fire, you express that through whatever you're doing. You're passionate, and unstoppable, but you don't know what awaits you later on. We can look at Ms. Elaine Paige's future performances, and the show in general, and see how much went on to change, and how much more strong and full the performances became later on. There is so much more depth, and control, and substance that came with the passage of time, and the work that all those people did. Back in 1981, I'm sure neither Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, nor Ms. Paige could have even imagined how much they both would grow, and how this song itself would mature. I don't know - it gives me hope somehow, that with time and with continued work towards whatever we're doing, things can and do change. If we're fortunate, hopefully, we can all grow, and get better over time.
oh her voice just gives me chills! It's beautiful! No matter how many times I've heard this song, I just get chills like it's the first time hearing it again.
Memories indeed ! Had the unexpected pleasure of taking a cruise some years ago and she was the featured artist. My wife no longer at my side- I we still have the memories of that touching performance ...
Yes, amazingly Beautifully sung ♥ How wonderful, what happiness I feel listening To Elaine Paige. Magnificent!! Bravo, You to. My editorial genius, you are Brilliant. Thanks 😊 🙏 😊
Last night I’ve watch Cats live for the first time, @Kravis in Pam Beach. this song surely surely embraces us in a hopeful way. the amount of passion this composition delivers is something magnificent 🥰🎹
Amo essa música na voz da Elaine Paige. Ela passa uma sensibilidade incrível! Poder contemplar a beleza da melancolia na voz de Elaine Paige é maravilhoso.
this was recorded in 1981, so you're right. At that point in time no could match her. Until, of course, when Betty Buckley performed it on the 1983 Tony Awards. She blew roof off the Gershwin Theater.
FANTASTIC...JUST Heard this song by JEGISUS called WHEN IS LOVE NOT ENOUGH TO SURVIVE....Absolutely beautiful, sounds like a Lloyd Webber track..makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck...
they both sing thi song superbly, just in different styles. breathing patterns and the like. kind of like listening to Toscannini conducting ludwig Van glorious 9th , then listening to Furtwangler conducting the same 9th by ludwig van. same music and lyrics but vastly different styles. only in my most humble opinion of course.
Susan Day Nothing wrong with the guy playing the piano... the piano itself doesn't sound of the quality that he ought to be given to play! Royal Variety on the cheap in austerity Britain ;-)
Elaine is a true star, and this song is truly a masterpiece, I'm always in awe even after hearing this song a hundred times
I am too. It is like looking at a very expensive and rare piece of jewelry or something similar.
What the fuck are you doing on this video seven years ago i-?
I am an enormous Streisand fan, but when I hear her sing Memory it somehow never seems right, this will always be Elaine's song, suits her powerful voice to perfection.
It is truly frightening to think that this wonderful performance is 40 years ago!
GLORIOUS...CLEAR AND WITH A MISSION.....THNK U ELAINE

Implying that Buckley is not sincere and heartfelt? Disagree.
TimeIdle they aren’t implying she isn’t, they are just implying that Elaine is more sincere. I can understand since she was the original
@cbonklisse Cold and detatched because of how the world has treated her? Buckley lives the character and performs the way the character lives.

This is a true gem. Emotional stuff.

I think she's a few days older than him ;D

Very few singers can sing like Elaine, every word is pronounced. A real professional.

Watching 2019, didnt know Elaine Paige but after searches I realized she is the singer behind some song ive been listening as a kid
Memories indeed ! Had the unexpected pleasure of taking a cruise some years ago and she was the featured artist. My wife no longer at my side- I we still have the memories of that touching performance ...
Wonderful. I saw her in Sunset about twenty years ago and she was just terrific. Andrew Lloyd weber is also a great talent spotter.
What a range. I remember this.
OMG! This is how it's done xxx Elaine the queen xx
Beautiful..and England (Britain) is so proud of her, as she is one of our own.
This is a Masterclass interpretation of Memory! 3:34 is jaw dropping! Thank you for having the "original" Grizabella!
Andrew is such a young and Elaine too. Apparently this piece of the two is a history. Really Impressive!

Definitive, a true interpretation of the song. You can almost se the scene from the play. Brava, indeed !
Elaine is amazing
Beautiful music Memory -the voice Elaine Paige !
It’s Elaine Paige and Betty Buckley number one for me. Each bring a different perspective to the character.
Gives me goosebumps!!!!! Amazing performance!!!
Good to hear Elaine's version at the time that she played Grizabella.
One word Magnificent !!!
Amo essa música na voz da Elaine Paige. Ela passa uma sensibilidade incrível!
Poder contemplar a beleza da melancolia na voz de Elaine Paige é maravilhoso.
you can see the tears in her eyes :)
True, and I've never seen her perform this song where there aren't tears in her eyes. She lives and breathes this song every time she performs it.
wow....just, beautiful.
Elaine Paige will always be Grizabella to me
OMG!!!!
lovely performance!
Such a powerful piece of music! It's impossible to not be moved ! ------------Wolfsky9
i love her so much and the song complements her its so amazing and Andrew...brilliant mind
Remember why oh why this is a great song and a great singer..........
A GREAT JOB AND WITH A GREAT SONG.
there are LITERALLY only three women in the whole world who can do this song justice: Elaine, Betty Buckley and Barbra Streisand. that's it.
Have you heard Heather Headley sing this? It's unbelievable.
nicole sch .... and susan boyle
Mamie does an incredible job as well! I was quite impressed
Susan Boyle's version was respectable IMO.
Sophie I’m currently learning this song. I hope I can do it justice.
I adore these classic, beautiful songs. So much better than the trash produced these days.
ALW is so adorable here!
Beautiful voice
That is something else
Everytime I hear this song, it really reminds me of Barbra Streisand - The Way We Were
Her best performance.
3:34 , no-one can do a more epic belt
right. it plunges like a dagger into your heart...
this was recorded in 1981, so you're right. At that point in time no could match her. Until, of course, when Betty Buckley performed it on the 1983 Tony Awards. She blew roof off the Gershwin Theater.
shivers! shivers all over me
Show! Essa mulher é uma intérprete fantástica! que leveza na voz, demais mesmo.
tq for the uploading....
back in the day when singers projected and didn't expect the mic to do the work.
Just Wonderful Thanks.
FANTASTIC...JUST Heard this song by JEGISUS called WHEN IS LOVE NOT ENOUGH TO SURVIVE....Absolutely beautiful, sounds like a Lloyd Webber track..makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck...
simplesmente MARAVILJOSO !!!!!!!!!!
Came here from Rio 2... nevertheless loved it.
Andrew LLoyd was just 20 here, now his 80 yrs old
seafarers online seaman you mean 37 and 70
She sang much better when she got older. She got much more control of her voice than this early version of the song.
Hard to believe this song would not exist if Judy Dench had played the role xx
Epic curtain.
what a pleasure
In 40 plus years from now, will the recordings/performances made/done today seem so archaic?
SUPER
Hello I'm the brother of Azucena. This singing is precious to me.
geek of the opera 😉
"I was beautiful then..." U_U
super。artist..
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Andrew looks so young...
You mean back in the day when there even were singers. I dont know what those things today are.
he is so young and thin adam! wow.
gosh i tried to open my mouth as wide and i couldn't
wow;;;;
On this song, Barbra is peerless
Gorgeous!! Indisputably the best Grizabella. But why is her hair grey here?
Who's here after they posted the cats musical?
I believe it was frosted. It was popular at the time.
Do you have the other parts of the ALW section from this RVP? I believe there was also Buenos Aires from Evita with Stephanie Lawrence.
I do indeed!! I've just uploaded it for you:
th-cam.com/video/0V0-uBBJ-C0/w-d-xo.html
Thank you! I am ecstatic!
ok so I'm new to this... who was first? her or Buckley?
+Kyle Bucheri, if I'm not mistaken Elaine first (ever) performed it in the UK, then Betty did the role for the first time in America.
estremecedora interpretación
Why Elaine has gray hairs?
She has a beautiful voice and sings this song much better than Betty Buckley.
you're very right
they both sing thi song superbly, just in different styles. breathing patterns and the like. kind of like listening to Toscannini conducting ludwig Van glorious 9th , then listening to Furtwangler conducting the same 9th by ludwig van. same music and lyrics but vastly different styles. only in my most humble opinion of course.
She's distracting me from the fact that the piano sounds like one in a primary school...
Really??? This guy wrote this classical masterpiece.
Susan Day

So true!
