Thanks for this. I like the scene with the music, but I wondered what it would be like without it as well. It is extremely eerie like I thought it would be and it does give you a scale of the destruction Sukuna caused. The music adds just how little fucks Sukuna gave about that and how much he revels in the suffering he causes.
The difference is like night and day. the eerie silence shows how deep in despair he is in full effect. But the original with the music placement feels like Sukuna’s humor or how little he cares, despite ending multiple lives he shrugs it off and watches this little boy lose his mind after he purposely places him at the edge of the destruction site. Like it’s a gift for him or some crap- like I caught you lacking so here’s a thank you.💀
I kinda almost love it over the original. It really brings us in and conveys Itadori’s feeling of guilt and isolation as subject to the aftermath. An entire city’s gone, no one’s around, yelling into complete silence.
It's pretty obvious that this song is meant to represent the bad guys, the lyrics and the tone is pretty chaotic. Even one of the band's member worried that the fans won't like the song as much because it represents the bad guys. What I'm trying to say is that this song playing in the background during Yuji's breakdown is VERY effective for me. It feels like Junpei's death all over again, Yuji was devastated while Mahito and Sukuna laughed straight at his face. This one is no different, he was utterly devastated, he was having a breakdown, yet the opening soundtrack plays as if it's some sort of triumphant anime moment. But when you think about it, it IS a triumphant moment, just not for the good guys. The big bad guy Sukuna got away YET AGAIN with his shenanigans, Yuji lost again, and Sukuna wanted Yuji to know that. Afterall, Shibuya arc IS the Villain's arc. Jjk did something special with the soundtrack in this season, and I love it a lot, they push their message not only through the visual representations, but also from the audio. I just hope that whoever made this got paid well... alas.
Im gonna be honest…i actually hated the intro playing in this scene. Sure the mood of the intro is intense and dark, but to me it did NOT fit this scene at all, as it is extremely shock inducing and tragic and leaves you dumbfounded. I just cant take that as seriously with the intro playing. With this silence it fits so much better. The eerie natural sounds really drive home the feeling of the moment…theres nothing left of shibuya. Sukuna destroyed everything and killed pretty much everyone. And more importantly, yuji is in complete shock and utterly traumatized by this sight. To me the silence just delivers those feelings much more effectively, you actually feel like you’re with yuji looking at this horror.
I'll never get that opinion and I'll never get the people laughing at it. Hearing the opening which is basically the card of presentation for the season, while one of the biggest peaks of the season is happening gives it way more weight because it's like saying "this is jujutsu kaisen, this is what this season, this show is really about" making it even more cruel

More than words instrumental would’ve fit the atmosphere way better leading into the ending. I don’t get this obsession with making this scene only about sukuna mocking yuji. This scene was way bigger than that. And more than sukuna mocking yuji it’s about Yuji becoming colder and accepting his role in this world. As well as his suicidal tendencies growing even more.

It's a funny and unexpected change, which is why people like it, but it completely ruins the original impact and vibe of the scene. This moment had an absolutely massive impact on the plot going forward. It's a real shame that that was ruined
Look at it this way: Sukuna is the one singing. He can talk to Yuji at any time he just chooses not to. Imagine how messed up it would be if YOU were responsible for the deaths of hundreds if not THOUSANDS of people and the guy who actually did it was just singing without a care in the world. I'm probably one of the few that thought the music ruined this scene. After the intense fight between Sukuna and Mahoraga I was about to fall out of my seat, but as the music died down and the dark expanse of death and destruction were revealed all I could do was sit and stare at the screen while imagining what was going through Itadori's mind. The silence was such a perfect contrast between the ferocity of the battle and the emptiness, however, when the catchy music started playing it brought me totally out of the mood. If anything I would have preferred the outro song playing in the background since it fit the emotions I were feeling at that moment.

I was curious about what would it look like without the music but I do like how they did put the opening with the breakdown because at least to me it symbolizes how from this point forward we will be having a new story and this is our introduction
See, there’s this game I really love called Omori. Something happens in the bad ending, and it’s a horrifying thing while a song called “My Time” plays, this energetic and fun waltz. But the combination makes it so much more unsettling, and that’s what makes Specialz hit hard for me in this scene.
I think it's crazy that Yuji's VA was so upset reading the script that he actually dropped to his knees to perform the scene. Gege out here traumatizing the actors of his characters

Edit: There seems to be a bit of debate about this so I may as well say, this is just my opinion, not saying its objectivly right, and honestly this scene is starting to grow on me a bit more here recently so idek anymore Music can make a scene, like when sukana used his domain expansion against mahoraga, yes the animation was some of if not the best I've ever seen, but the music really capped it off, but no music can make some scenes even better, I think they just didn't have enough time to make a new song honestly and they didn't want to have no music so they squished this in.

The guitar part after the first "you are my special" stuff literally sounds like an evil reveal type beat music I thought it fit perfectly, to me it felt like it did a great job at showing how strong the enemies are.

The irony of the lyrics makes the scene more cruel and hearing the opening which is basically the presentation for the season while Itadori is finding all this horror gives the scene way more weight because in addition with the tittle card at the end it's like tell the viewer and Itadori "this is jujutsu kaisen, this is what this job is about" making it even more cruel
I think I prefer the music. While I can kinda get behind this version without it, it oddly feels..a bit predictably safe. Like, of course it’s eerie, of course we have these long panning shots of silence to soak in just how much damage Sukuna did. It checks off all the boxes of what it needed to do. With the music though? That feels like it was doing what it wanted to do. Check off all the boxes and earn some bonus points in the process. The Opening adds that spice of knowing full well that to laugh or vibe to the music at this point would be to synchronize exactly with how Sukuna is feeling at this point: Cocky, Sadistic, and so unambiguously evil that it is overtaking how we *should* be feeling, sorrowful and hopeless to synchronize with Yuji. I love it.
It’s just like fucking dumb I don’t know. It feels like it’s robbing any seriousness of the scene. Like I physically cannot have taken that scene as seriously as I did when I read it in the manga because they played the music over it.

From Sukuna’s point of view, it is comical, entertainment for the ultimate evil, to see the guy with the brightest eyes in the series just absolutely lose his mind over the fact that his own body was used to murder millions. Since this scene wants to give us the chance to see it from his perspective, the music helps to do that. Sukuna, and the show by extension, is meant to be robbing the viewer of their chance to properly take in this scene and feel for Yuji and instead pull us toward seeing it the way this irredeemable monster does. We then can get pulled back to reality with Yuji when we get that uncanny shot of him staring at the camera. To summarize, I can understand why you think it’s dumb, but I think it’s fair to respect the different direction they took for this scene and how they wanted to portray just how evil and irredeemable Sukuna is and will continue to be.
@@HabitualThinkerI thought it added to the despair of the scene. It hammers home the point that this is Sukuna’s complete victory and Yuji is losing the battle for control of his own body. Yuji isn’t even allowed to process his grief without Sukuna’s presence mocking him.
This is one of my favorite scenes in the show, possibly of any anime, because it actually shows the destruction that comes from anime level fights. Most shonen choose to ignore the actual damage that come from massive fights in cities or just do an ass pull to remove its very real consequences. Think how MHA casually has shigaraki and Deku obliterate a city in the war arc only to brush over the thousands or tens of thousands of people that died, or how all of the destruction from pains assault on the leaf village was reversed with one jutsu. JJK doesn’t do that and it goes out of its way to show that when two juggernauts square off in a city the result is horrifying for literally everyone. It’s great show don’t tell storytelling that a lot of shonen anime just miss entirely.
Usually in Anime, openings being played in climactic moments usually represent victory or a triumph for the hero, however, the scene here is showing the exact opposite The lyrcis and song of Specialz is moreso towards the villians, so this playing as Itadori breaks down makes so much sense The opening being played shows that it isnt a victory for itadori, *_it was for Sukuna_* Tdlr; an equivalent of this scene is saying for example, when Gojo fights Jogo in S1 and Kaikai kitan (S1 OP 1) is playing, showing triumph in Gojo against Jogo, (Hero > Villian) Wheras this scene shows (Villian > Hero) Sukuna over Itadori
here goes my theory, its just my opinion so i might be wrong: In the first meeting with Mahito, Jumpei is suffering wanting to die, Yuji suffers for not being able to help him and then Sukuna and Mahito laugh in his face... in this scene the one who wants to die is Itadori, the ones who suffer are us and the song It's from the show, from the story to us... because in the same way that Itadoria wouldn't suffer for Jumpei if he didn't follow the path of jujutsu, we wouldn't suffer if we didn't continue the show... it's our fault, that's why he laughs the show
Honestly I prefer the silent nature of the scene more than the music. As the latter gives off the impression that Sukuna is trolling Yuji (which he totally is). But the eerie silence besides Itadori's screaming showcases how alone he is, and the severity of the damage caused by Sukuna.
This is like Salvation. No Happy disgrace song. Just pure emptiness, despiar, and suffering. You can feel yuji's Emotions & Situation 10 times better. Pure. How it should be. Thank you, for this Correction.

To explain it in a more detailed way: You suppose to feel all the despiar & sadness from yuji, and sukuna's immense Destruction. This Happy Opening "you're are my speical" with that happy melody takes away almost Everything from that, and makes the scene seems like a joke (and no, Lyrics doesn't matter, if the Melodie is Happy, Because the Melodie, the sound will always dominate the Lyrics). Well, the Basic Idea to create a contrast is decent, but the Execution of it is miserable. Therefore: It doesn't create a contrast, it creates a Paradoxon. The Manga creates an absolute feeling. This Panels made you respect Life more, and connect to yuji MUCH better. We allready know that sukuna has yuji on his grip, we know that he is absolute Superior. And we don't need a Connection to an Overpowered cannibal, who kills everyone for fun . Sukuna works perfect as Villian, and he got his shine, and overshadowed EVERYTHING the last two episodes. This scene would deliver him as Villian MUCH BETTER through silence (Ironically), or just an fitting OST seeing all the deaths of innocent & the Destruction. It would make you feel with the humanized Protagonist where you can connect 100 times better, Because almost everyone (we the readers/watchers) suffered at certain Point in Life trhough livetime. The Opening Choice here wasn't like Sukuna riducles yuji, it's like the Animation Team riducles over this deep & serious scene. Silence is a powerful tool for certain scenes in a story to increase the Quality of the Moment, and to make the Watcher use his imagination & Emotions. It makes things pure, and so is yujis Breakdown & his Emotions. This corection here is Grotesque, dark, and you feel an emptiness Inside you watching this, like yuji feels. This emptiness visualizes also physically trhough the big black hole in shibuya, created by sukuna. Combine this physically emptiness, yujis emptiness in his soul, and the emptiness in Sound, and you have the perfect synchronized Momentum, that gives all 3 aspects (sukuna, yuji, and the Connection for the Reader/Watcher through silence) the perfect Balance, lead by yuji trhough his pure Reaction as tool/eyes for us readers/watchers. This is the actual Porpose of this Scene. A little "come back on the ground, and be thankful for what you have" Message to us readers/watchers (without Sound).

As a manga reader, when this scene came I was anticipating how well they could do. Yuji's despair, pure horror and him slowly losing his conviction and reaching his limit. Like how AoT captured Eren's despair when Hans was getting eaten by the titan. It would have been 10 times better had the song been not played. Yet it took that one song that destroyed the mood. "Specialz" was actually a good song but sorry, I dont find it any better in this scene. Perhaps a sad bg theme would do good in this scene, but oh well.

I totally respect your opinion but can I point out one thing? The opening song was written from a curses point of view of the Shibuya incident. As manga readers we know how much Curses love to see death and destruction right? They'd find this situation to be pure ecstasy. Yuji breaking down and crying while the song plays was basically an allegory for Sukuna to mock him and taunt him. Cuz we know Sukuna is probably the second most unhinged mofo after a certain evil Sorcerer who's still causing trouble.
Mood for what? Sakuna was laughing so hard on him and Yuji can't take a break. It's like everyone having a dance party at your parents funeral and that's the point. This totally fits the mood.
honestly the original DID pull me out of the scene, if only because i wasn't expecting it, but it still works really well imo personally i like both the same. music can change the tone of the scene, and since specialz is a villain song, it works well as sukuna chose that spot just so yuji could see the aftermath firsthand the silence also works because it shows how alone yuji is in that moment either you watch yuji get mocked, or him be alone losing his mind. its effective either way.
Thank you for making this. I get what people mean when they talk about the music playing adding something, but I, can’t and don’t really subscribe to that. for me, the tone ruined how much you really feel itadoris numbness in this scene upon the realization that he can only move forward from here. i’m not mad about how they adapted it, i just think the emotion was lost. and once again i get it. that’s the point of the arc. but i can’t help but feel a little cheated out of the VA’s performance in the original.

To have the resolve and continue to push forward is astounding. I have nothing but respect for Yuji.
It is one of his flaws as a character, hence he's relatability as a person.

Music can make a scene, like when sukana used his domain expansion against mahoraga, yes the animation was some of if not the best I've ever seen, but the music really capped it off, but no music can make some scenes even better, I think they just didn't have enough time to make a new song honestly and they didn't want to have no music so they squished this in.

The guitar part after the first "you are my special" stuff literally sounds like an evil reveal type beat music I thought it fit perfectly, to me it felt like it did a great job at showing how strong the enemies are.

The irony of the lyrics makes the scene more cruel and hearing the opening which is basically the presentation for the season while Itadori is finding all this horror gives the scene way more weight because in addition with the tittle card at the end it's like tell the viewer and Itadori "this is jujutsu kaisen, this is what this job is about" making it even more cruel

I think I prefer the music. While I can kinda get behind this version without it, it oddly feels..a bit predictably safe. Like, of course it’s eerie, of course we have these long panning shots of silence to soak in just how much damage Sukuna did. It checks off all the boxes of what it needed to do.
With the music though? That feels like it was doing what it wanted to do. Check off all the boxes and earn some bonus points in the process. The Opening adds that spice of knowing full well that to laugh or vibe to the music at this point would be to synchronize exactly with how Sukuna is feeling at this point: Cocky, Sadistic, and so unambiguously evil that it is overtaking how we *should* be feeling, sorrowful and hopeless to synchronize with Yuji.

It’s just like fucking dumb I don’t know. It feels like it’s robbing any seriousness of the scene. Like I physically cannot have taken that scene as seriously as I did when I read it in the manga because they played the music over it.

From Sukuna’s point of view, it is comical, entertainment for the ultimate evil, to see the guy with the brightest eyes in the series just absolutely lose his mind over the fact that his own body was used to murder millions. Since this scene wants to give us the chance to see it from his perspective, the music helps to do that. Sukuna, and the show by extension, is meant to be robbing the viewer of their chance to properly take in this scene and feel for Yuji and instead pull us toward seeing it the way this irredeemable monster does. We then can get pulled back to reality with Yuji when we get that uncanny shot of him staring at the camera.
To summarize, I can understand why you think it’s dumb, but I think it’s fair to respect the different direction they took for this scene and how they wanted to portray just how evil and irredeemable Sukuna is and will continue to be.

This is one of my favorite scenes in the show, possibly of any anime, because it actually shows the destruction that comes from anime level fights. Most shonen choose to ignore the actual damage that come from massive fights in cities or just do an ass pull to remove its very real consequences. Think how MHA casually has shigaraki and Deku obliterate a city in the war arc only to brush over the thousands or tens of thousands of people that died, or how all of the destruction from pains assault on the leaf village was reversed with one jutsu. JJK doesn’t do that and it goes out of its way to show that when two juggernauts square off in a city the result is horrifying for literally everyone. It’s great show don’t tell storytelling that a lot of shonen anime just miss entirely.
When you realize this was what Yuuji essentially was hearing during this breakdown. Just wind and white static noise when your thoughts get loud.

The lyrcis and song of Specialz is moreso towards the villians, so this playing as Itadori breaks down makes so much sense

here goes my theory, its just my opinion so i might be wrong:
In the first meeting with Mahito, Jumpei is suffering wanting to die, Yuji suffers for not being able to help him and then Sukuna and Mahito laugh in his face... in this scene the one who wants to die is Itadori, the ones who suffer are us and the song It's from the show, from the story to us... because in the same way that Itadoria wouldn't suffer for Jumpei if he didn't follow the path of jujutsu, we wouldn't suffer if we didn't continue the show... it's our fault, that's why he laughs the show

Honestly I prefer the silent nature of the scene more than the music. As the latter gives off the impression that Sukuna is trolling Yuji (which he totally is). But the eerie silence besides Itadori's screaming showcases how alone he is, and the severity of the damage caused by Sukuna.
Remembering Gege hates Gojo the most but ended up abusing Yuji
This is like Salvation. No Happy disgrace song. Just pure emptiness, despiar, and suffering. You can feel yuji's Emotions & Situation 10 times better. Pure. How it should be.

the music made the scene better, its sorta like Sukuna is mocking Yuji. Yujis words when he first became a sorcerer were "I don't know how ill feel when dying, but I wont regret the way I lived" its kind of like Sukuna is making him eat his words, this was very much so Sukuna's episode

To explain it in a more detailed way: You suppose to feel all the despiar & sadness from yuji, and sukuna's immense Destruction. This Happy Opening "you're are my speical" with that happy melody takes away almost Everything from that, and makes the scene seems like a joke (and no, Lyrics doesn't matter, if the Melodie is Happy, Because the Melodie, the sound will always dominate the Lyrics). Well, the Basic Idea to create a contrast is decent, but the Execution of it is miserable. Therefore: It doesn't create a contrast, it creates a Paradoxon. The Manga creates an absolute feeling. This Panels made you respect Life more, and connect to yuji MUCH better.
We allready know that sukuna has yuji on his grip, we know that he is absolute Superior. And we don't need a Connection to an Overpowered cannibal, who kills everyone for fun . Sukuna works perfect as Villian, and he got his shine, and overshadowed EVERYTHING the last two episodes. This scene would deliver him as Villian MUCH BETTER through silence (Ironically), or just an fitting OST seeing all the deaths of innocent & the Destruction. It would make you feel with the humanized Protagonist where you can connect 100 times better, Because almost everyone (we the readers/watchers) suffered at certain Point in Life trhough livetime. The Opening Choice here wasn't like Sukuna riducles yuji, it's like the Animation Team riducles over this deep & serious scene. Silence is a powerful tool for certain scenes in a story to increase the Quality of the Moment, and to make the Watcher use his imagination & Emotions. It makes things pure, and so is yujis Breakdown & his Emotions. This corection here is Grotesque, dark, and you feel an emptiness Inside you watching this, like yuji feels. This emptiness visualizes also physically trhough the big black hole in shibuya, created by sukuna. Combine this physically emptiness, yujis emptiness in his soul, and the emptiness in Sound, and you have the perfect synchronized Momentum, that gives all 3 aspects (sukuna, yuji, and the Connection for the Reader/Watcher through silence) the perfect Balance, lead by yuji trhough his pure Reaction as tool/eyes for us readers/watchers. This is the actual Porpose of this Scene. A little "come back on the ground, and be thankful for what you have" Message to us readers/watchers (without Sound).

As a manga reader, when this scene came I was anticipating how well they could do. Yuji's despair, pure horror and him slowly losing his conviction and reaching his limit. Like how AoT captured Eren's despair when Hans was getting eaten by the titan.
It would have been 10 times better had the song been not played. Yet it took that one song that destroyed the mood. "Specialz" was actually a good song but sorry, I dont find it any better in this scene. Perhaps a sad bg theme would do good in this scene, but oh well.

I totally respect your opinion but can I point out one thing? The opening song was written from a curses point of view of the Shibuya incident. As manga readers we know how much Curses love to see death and destruction right? They'd find this situation to be pure ecstasy. Yuji breaking down and crying while the song plays was basically an allegory for Sukuna to mock him and taunt him. Cuz we know Sukuna is probably the second most unhinged mofo after a certain evil Sorcerer who's still causing trouble.
Mood for what? Sakuna was laughing so hard on him and Yuji can't take a break. It's like everyone having a dance party at your parents funeral and that's the point. This totally fits the mood.
honestly the original DID pull me out of the scene, if only because i wasn't expecting it, but it still works really well imo
personally i like both the same. music can change the tone of the scene, and since specialz is a villain song, it works well as sukuna chose that spot just so yuji could see the aftermath firsthand
the silence also works because it shows how alone yuji is in that moment
either you watch yuji get mocked, or him be alone losing his mind. its effective either way.

Thank you for making this. I get what people mean when they talk about the music playing adding something, but I, can’t and don’t really subscribe to that. for me, the tone ruined how much you really feel itadoris numbness in this scene upon the realization that he can only move forward from here. i’m not mad about how they adapted it, i just think the emotion was lost. and once again i get it. that’s the point of the arc. but i can’t help but feel a little cheated out of the VA’s performance in the original.
