To be clear guys, in my Titan video I did say that we haven't formulated a methane-based respiration that produces more than 10% of the energy our respiration uses, so the possibility of complex methane-based life, at least according to the models we have, is highly unlikely. That said, the universe is under no obligation to conform to our models.

    • @pyalot

the mitochondrial proton pump is a pretty complex mechanism that bears to me, more than a resemblance to a rube goldberg machine. We suspect that the fantastic efficiency of chloroplasts is down to quantum superpostion of incoming photons. we breathe the waste of plants, and plants breathe the waste of animals. there is no reason to reject the possibilty that similarly complex mechanisms and interactions have evolved for organism respirating methane, producing waste respirated by another class of life, producing methane again. there is no need for methane respiration to be efficient to allow for animal life, as long as breathing the waste of methane respiration is efficient.

      Anaerobic beings perhaps?

@@pyalot _there is no need for methane respiration to be efficient to allow for animal life, as long as breathing the waste of methane respiration is efficient._ But how active would such animals be? Would/could they be anything more than bacteria, especially orbiting a planet on such a dim sun?

    • @pyalot
      @pyalot 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@RonJohn63 You didn't follow the reasoning. If you have plants breathing methane expelling a waste gas, that can be breathed, like we breathe oxygen which is a waste gas of plants breathing CO2, and if that waste gas can be harnessed sufficiently efficiently, like oxygen in mitochondrial proton pumps, then it doesn't matter how inefficient methane respiration is.
The main difficulty about this is that oxygen will ignite with methane in relatively low concentrations (unlike CO2). So whatever waste gas is expelled from methane respiration would have to have to be chemically reactive (like oxygen) but unable to readily react with methane. There might be candidates for this, but i'm not a chemist.

Florian Bösch plants also breathe oxygen, that is a reason among others you shouldn't put plants in your dorm...
plants eat carbon dioxide and produce more oxygen than they need

Really enjoyed this in-depth discussion on Barnard, and on Peter van de Kamp in particular. I worked at Sproul Observatory while I was in high school for, Wulff-Dieter Heintz, who was Van de Kamp's chosen successor. Ironically, Heintz demonstrated that Van de Kamp's observations were incorrect. A few years later, I did my undergraduate at Villanova University, with Edward Guinan as one of my professors. Guinan was part of the Barnard b discovery team. So I can say that I worked at two of the institutions involved in the search for Barnard's planet at exactly the wrong times to have any contribution to the finding :)

I knew about Barnard's Star for over 30 years (1975/76 to be exact), when in the Jr High School Science Club we were discussing about each other's up-coming science fair project, and my brother wanted to do a map of the 100 closest stars. Long story short - part of the discussion fell onto Bernard's star because its stellar path has a bit of a sine curve to it, speculating that it must have a large planet orbiting it that effects its stellar path; making Bernard's Star one of the first stars, in theory, conjecture and observation, to have a planet orbiting it.

I'm no astronomer. But it always used to annoy me that the existence of planets around other stars was somehow a controversial idea. More small things than big things = makes sense to me. Of course we need to actually find them first, but that should always have been almost a foregone issue just awaiting improved detection. And somehow it wasn't in the 70s and 80s. I never understood that.

I can't for the life of me figure out the word you said at: 6:52 and it seems fairly crucial to me, as it defines the very narrow set of only 6 named stars...
Starting at 6:48 you said: "to date only 6 stars have been formerly named for people beyond _______"
The _______ sounds to me like it definitely starts with an "M", beyond that I'm clutching at straws to fill in the phonemes. The vague impressions I get are: 'mel', 'mil', or perhaps 'meh'... haha!

I was way out in the country in Morocco where there are no street lights or any other lights from businesses or houses. The night sky over my head look like a velvet Bowl turned upside down full of diamonds. I will never forget it

I'd never heard of Barnard's before. As usual, fascinating and thorough history of something strange and wonderful. Thank you!

The idea of Barnard's Star being a quiet, reserved, wise old man on a pilgrimage through the universe who's seen it all, done it all is too quaint. I like to think of it (in human terms) as him being a new neighbor who moved in next door to Sol and between her and and the Centauri family. Hey this sounds like an awesome plot for a slice-of-life anime! :P
Ofc the REAL question everyone wants to know is:
"If these aliens breathe methane, does that mean we can sell them our farts?" - Joel Gawne, circa 2019

0:54 - I think Barnard's Star was also mentioned in a Star Trek TOS episode wherein the Enterprise responds to a distress call from a lonely man living on a planet in that star system, who desperately needed a jar of salt tablets -- because his girlfriend was secretly a salt-sucking vampire alien.
That assumes I remember correctly, anyway. I only saw the episode once, decades ago.

I must apologize for my mis-use of the word sycophantic (defined as - "behaving or done in an obsequious way in order to gain advantage"., I never actually read the definition and I thought it just meant something similar to "being blindly loyal". I did not understand that there the ulterior motive aspect to the word... so Thank You from your dorky, non-academic, yet blindly loyal youtube fan - Joe

I always assumed red dwarf stars were more violent because they have a Napoleon complex.

@17:40 A recent discovery in the past few weeks suggest we may have , in fact, just identified our first Population III star. The vast majority of these were gigantic and short-lived, but this lucky find appears to be a red dwarf survivor from this period, having by far the lowest metallicity of any stellar object yet discovered. I forget the name, but I read the article less than two weeks ago. Try Googling it and see if you can find it.
