Searching for Saraswati: How a Mythical Indian River Is Fueling Hindu Nationalism | Op-Docs

  • This week we bring you Shirley Abraham and Amit Madheshiya’s masterful film, “Searching for Saraswati,” a wry, modern-day parable of religion and politics that plays out in the Indian countryside. Abraham and Madheshiya - who previously directed the exquisite feature documentary, “The Cinema Travellers” - spin an understated and hilarious portrait of politicians, priests and religious devotees all hurrying to get in on what they hope will be a religious and cultural groundswell, no matter what the skeptics say. The fact, that there really was Saraswati river which flowed from Himalayas and to Arabian sea, cannot be denied. It dried up some 3000 years ago. Just because a budget has been allocated for archaeological survey, one shouldn't start linking it with religion while reporting. Some people may have faith, no one can stop them from having that. I guess 'some' people on this earth still believe that a man existed about 2000 years ago, who came back to life three days after he died on a cross.

    • @firstnamesurname8531

There’s no archaeological evidence whatsoever that it existed, it can 100 percent very easily be denied since the simple fact it is the only thing to EVER be uncovered by researchers was evidence that it did NOT exist not that it DID exist

Satellite images, supported by a four-year drilling exercise, which was guided by ancient literature, have established that the river Saraswati is not a myth. It was a huge river that died a premature death about 5,000 years ago, and is now buried 60 metres below the ground. A map of all the channels discovered so far leads one to conclude that it was probably 1,500 km long, three to fifteen kms wide, and about five metres deep. The river probably crisscrossed the present-day states of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan. S C Sharma, regional director, cgwb, says it continues to flow to the sea at a rate of 20 metres a year.
The prospect of rediscovering the Saraswati was triggered off by digital photographs sent by the American satellite Landsat. To the surprise of many scientists, the photographs showed the presence of underground water in a definitive pattern in the Jaisalmer area. It was during this time that scientists started speaking of a large palaeo-channel in Rajasthan that could well belong to a big river.
Remote sensing images of the isro and the Geological Survey of India (gsi) also found the existence of palaeo-channels of a mighty river in seven to eight places, all lying on the west of the Aravalli ranges. The images pointed to the possibility that the river started at the foothills of the Aravallis and shifted westward in stages. The river seems to enter Rajasthan in Ganganagar district, with its tail ends in Bikaner and Jaisalmer districts, a few kilometres from the Rann of Kutchh.
Further, a geophysical survey undertaken by the rgwd in the Tanot and Longewala areas indicated the existence of coarse sediments in the depth range of 30 to 60 metres pointing to the possibility of the existence of a river in the region.

    - Rig Veda, Verse 8-95
    English Translation :
"Of all the Great existing Rivers, Saraswati alone became Caring as a Mother, Flowing pure from the mountains of the higher planes up to the lower ocean (. Being Caring of the riches of the manifold world, She has yielded for the Humans who dwells near her the best of milk and clarified butter" (From the Cows which dwell near the river)
As an Indian Atheist, I think it would be trivial for my Ancestors to lie about existence of the Great River Saraswati which dried up sometime around 1500 B.C. Regardless of whether Saraswati exists or not today, Hindu Nationalism is on the rise and that is a Great thing !!!

Nations like Sweden have already fallen and Germany will fall soon as well because of weak , effeminate lefty ideas like these . Know the difference between Dharma Traditions and Abrahamic religions and you will agree that for India to remain free and secular its Dharma which must be strengthened. A good example that intellectuals influenced by the social sciences employ the same debating tactics as proselytizing Christian missionaries.
Take the word "mythical" in the title. The intent is that it is wrong for a government to initiate research on a mythical topic. So far, so good. But this video clip has the support of those researchers who believe the Aryan Migration theory; the Aryan Migration theory was born out of the Biblical migration accounts of Shem, Ham and Japheth. If you can grow a theory out of Shem, Ham, Japheth, please grant the government the same privilege: that of growing a theory out of the story of Saraswati.
There are some who make sarcastic comments on reviving a river. The contrast set here is the river revival project by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's Art of Living. It would have been good if the video clip could have inserted a reference to that; at least the public would know that river revival is feasible.
It is true that the public dirty the river water, but also use the river water for seemingly clean activities such as bathing, washing clothes and puja. So it seems illogical. In fact, it was logical when populations were smaller; for rivers have self-cleaning properties. This self-cleaning property has been overwhelmed by modern populations, which are very large. The video clip could have inserted a reference to the self-cleaning properties of rivers, too.
All in all, this video clip has studiously avoided the Principle of Charity. The video clip has followed the proselytizing Christian trope of finding followers of adhyatma as stupid and immoral. It is one more evidence that the social sciences smuggle (proselytizing) Christian theology in secular clothes.

That River Saraswati used to Flow in the North-Western regions of India(including today's Paksitan)... is a #FACT. When you check the fossils & sediments from places in Rajasthan, Sindh(in Pakistan), Gujarat... you do get corraborative data.#BUT.. for people in a town to worship groundwater is certainly STUPID. That DOES NOT negate the River.

That's what you get from 65+ years of pseudo-Marxist five-year plan economies. 65+ years of "secularism" that only targets Hindu Temples for syphoning off takings from their congression, putting politicians (some even Christian and Muslim!!) on the boards of the Temples, leaving Churches and Mosques unmolested (fine form of "secularism" that!). That's what you get from 65+ years that have completely ripped out Sanatana Dharma from Education that puts Environmental Protection at its heart timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Vedic-perspective-on-environment/articleshow/4613346.cms The sooner India returns to Dharma the better it will be for all, including the enviroment www.sanskrit.nic.in/SVimarsha/V2/c17.pdf

Glad all pulling this faith-based scam were questioned by Jarnail Singh (the really intelligent farmer). Also glad that P.P.
