  • Justin Vogt, deputy managing editor of Foreign Affairs, sits down with Ananya Vajpeyi, fellow at the Center for Developing Societies in New Delhi.
They discuss the rise of India's religious right, the campaign to suppress the work of Hinduism scholar Wendy Doniger, and what the recent election of Narendra Modi, a Hindu nationalist, will mean for Indian politics moving forward.
For more, read Vajpeyi's review essay, "The Triumph of the Hindu Right," in the September/October 2014 issue of Foreign Affairs: ow.ly/ACGuO

I'm appalled at this lady's abject intellectual poverty. Did she care to reverse the gaze on Abrahamic religions and use the discarded Freudian psychoanalysis, the same psychoanalysis that was used by Wendy, and depict their central figures in kind? Who needs enemies when Bharat is filled with 'well-read' ladies and gentlemen like this lady here?

Yes, a Christian is as much an Indian Citizen as a Hindu or a Muslim etc etc. But, how many Christian names can we remember who fought for Independence? One? Two? None! Now, that is the difference between Nationalism and Citizenship, if I may say so. Yes, guys can stake claim for citizenship but when it comes to fighting for independence those guys were too busy getting 'saved' by her highness' missionary uncles and aunties. And this lady is giving lectures to a westerner as to how these 'Nationalists' are a problem for India? I thought the Brit looters thought Nationalists were a problem to her highness. No? I'm no writer. Not a scholar either. But, her knowledge AND intellect are worse than mine.

+bharat vaasi You wish. There is NO END OF SANTANA. it is without a beginning and without any end. it existed before the world began and will continue after you and I die. Forget BJP etc. the fact of the matter is most of those who fought for Indians independence were Hindus and Sikhs some muslims and some parsis. Have the decency to acknowledge that.

bharat vaasi sorry if you are writing in hindi, use hindi. there is no end to Sangh, it means good company and it will continue. The things that are based in dharma will continue even when not a single human being is left in this universe. dharma will exist.

bharat vaasi Look, you make little sense, you are filled with hate. I feel sorry for you. Sangh is now a world wide organisation and with what it does it will only grow. The young Indians are now waking up to wisdom of Hinduism. and there is an understanding of the greatness of hinduism. sorry you would not understand, it requires reading and discipline.

bharat vaasi santanism helped aryabhatt to give concept of astronomy and space science and numbers to this word. Santanism helped ramanujan to prove the existence of infinity, santanism helped c.v.raman to discover the enery pockets concept, santanism help banbhatt to invent the fact of trigonometry, santanism helped hargovind khurana to code dna, santanism helped shusurut to invent surgery, santanism helped kananda to discover the concept of sub atomic particles. Tell what the fucking invention or discovery you did by not believing in sanatanism. myself wrote an award winning thesis on vaccination of aids with help of sanatanism.

As an american of european ancestry I certainly hope that Indian civilization continues to fluorish in the coming century.I've studied history assiduously as a past time for the last forty years focusing mainly on roman greek and modern european history. The last few years I've been reading a lot of chinese and indian history and it's been really fun and stimulating.

She doesn't know India. Not an Expert. She perceives India not as it is but through a. Western lens. Her views would do, no good to you in understanding & establishing good relationship with India. If you really want to know India, Indian and Hindutva then come to India without any preconceived notions.
'Hindutva' is not what you perceive through a western or leftist preconceived notions
'Hindu Rastra' is what we say, but 'Hindu Nationalism' is an English word. Nation and Rastra are not synonymous.
If you really want to understand, I can recommend you books other than those return by Westerners or leftist or western educated (mind washed,) Indians

To be able to understand Hinduism which is by the way not a religion (Supreme court of India says this) you need to know Sanskrit first which sadly she doesn't, neither does Wendy Donniger. Sir Monier williams did know Sanskrit and then attempted to study Hinduism. He created the Sanskrit to English dictionary.

dear Foreign Affairs, it is not meaningful to try to understand Hindu nationalism who is against the philosophy.
Hindu nationalism is a positive movement where people derive inspiration from positive aspects of Hinduism.
Hindu values are enshrined in Indian constitution and laws and multi religiousness is seen as a Hindu value, especially as contrasted to Islamic nationalism, which excludes others.
please stop maligning a positive movement in the world which works towards harmony and peace.

Pretty poor analysis. I'm a hindu who who knows he is hindu only because others choose to call him so. Some say there's one god some say there are many . some say there is none. I say Everything is Nothing and Nothing could be everything. Now that we have this settled let's talk about What to do and Why to do it. Karma and Dharma.
This seemed to have been working pretty well for atleast 10,000years. Pow ! very humane rules of war ! Muslim invasion ! Co-existing & new language ! Pow ! British ! Ok now we have to figure out how translate all this paper work from 10000years to english so that they can catch up and we can proceed. They seem to be suspiciously keen on doing business though . oh crap when did the muslims start feeling that we are out to get them. They came they stayed they even ruled i thought the king was taking care of that . this must have been done by the British . Crap! these last few kings have been really crappy at economic policy if only we had had time to get them caught up . I understand my country from the western perspective so job done ! Oh incidentally the GDP of this region fell from 18% to 1% in all this hassle of translation . Oh crap they also removed the gold standard . Oh Fine , Level playing field. I don't even know my mother tongue now. I need some political representation at the International level,
Hence , Hindu nationalist government .
America , I love you but I'm just trying to get you caught up .
China : Oh India, there is a reason we came to your country and took only buddhism. You know everything is just a point of view right .

Hinduism is science of all religion like Physics (for lack of better example), no one person can master this even real Hindus. It is so vast and so open with huge history a westerner cannot comprehend for sure in their "career " time . May be that is the reason for all wrong interpretations by western scholars.
Of all the best and marvellous aspects of bharat culture, she chose to talk about sex , Eroticism and mythology does not add much value for a person who claims to have done years of research .....Hmm why don't you explore and publish the same topics in Judaism....Madam Boniger?
I am not against a foreigner researching and writing about Hinduism. But I cannot stop thinking what is the motive for these people to do this kind of work .... To me they look like a amateur /illegal tourist guides making a living near Taj Mahal...
There is a saying in our culture... When a dog barks at the sun, the sun doesn't stop shining.....
I am not judging the human being here but their work and professional ethics .....

+bharat vaasi you know when the puskpak vim an does come back...it might come back in forms of India sending its mission to Mars, with the latest possible technology, in India's smart cities, and cutting technology. Indians till this day are known for their scientific prowess the world over, and by that I mean, most of them are Hindus....check it out.

bharat vaasi keep dreaming HIndu intellectuals are all over the world. some of them are running the major companies around the world. and yes people are becoming something, that is good, does not mean hindus will stop---they continue as ever before.

bharat vaasi The babas are a very small portion of it. You care about hindiusm? pick up books, go within, meditate, read, and then write. that is the way to do. Not to sit behind a computer, cherry pick what is wrong and forget what is great.....you are the one who is sleeping blindly by focusing on a few negatives and ignoring the large grand narratives. which has always made india mahaan.

    • @hgjhg2341
      @hgjhg2341 8 ปีที่แล้ว

bharat vaasi ha, keep your negative thinking to yourself. there is enough data to prove what you are saying is not correct. I have no time to the research for you. If you are interested in knowing how wrong you are, just open your mind and research. For us, India is great, if it is not for you, please proceed to Pakistan or any other country of your choice...
