    A private saw a general putting sugar and milk in his coffee - he said "I thought real men drank their coffee black." The general replied, "real men drink their coffee as they damn please." Same with length of hair.

      My take on it: real men can drink their coffee black, if there is no milk and sugar at hand, and not whine about it.
      Otherwise, yeah, power to the general.

      It used to be around where I live at least that as a matter of being honourable a man was not supposed to pry into another mans private life as well as things like don’t discuss religion unless everyone there is the same religion or don’t discuss politics unless it’s among people who know eachother well or it’s an intended political discussion. I think this concept can be extended to things like being gay too. I could care less if someone I work with or randomly encounter is gay or not and the thought of what’s their sexuality doesn’t even cross my mind. Even the stereotypes I’ve known very stereotypically “feminine” men who were totally straight and very stereotypically “masculine” seeming men who were gay. Hell I don’t live in a city work mostly outdoors and like things like working on my own vehicles and I’m bi leaning towards preferring males so really stereotypically anything is bullshit. Hell high heels and tights used to be considered “male fashion” way back
      I see it as the same way. As long as you’re not raping anyone not treating your partner like shit and not having sex in public a man can be with whoever the fuck he wants or not. I choose not to have sex right now I just have a lot bigger priorities in life

    masculinity really isnt about whether you have long or short hair. It's about values like honour, bravery, responsibility, duty. Being a patriarch to your family, having a skill or trait to contribute to your society. Being a protector and a provider. Being strong of constitution and mind. Those are masculine values, whether you have long or short hair or a beard is really irrelevant.

      Pretty much this; let's take the whole "lumberjack look", for example; modern man tries to look like a lumberjack, instead of being the lumberjack.

    • @walden6272
      @walden6272 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Looks do play a part. It's part of evolution. Animals responds the same toward physical appearance. That's why birds with better color and feathers can attract mates. Trying to downplay looks is a mistake. If you don't think your hair or beard matters in regards to masculinity, why don't you try to shave the front part of your head but leave the back long and comb over it toward your front and then do an opposite-hitler mustache with middle shaved and side grown out and use gel to straighten them. See how many people respond to your masculinity of character after that. I bet your significant other would dump you if you don't change your looks back.

    Dude, watch for confirmation bias. While there were a number of factors contributing to short hair coming into masculine style in the late nineteenth century America, the biggest contributing factor was industrialization. Short hair in factories was just safer. While the founders had 'longish' hair, few if any had beards; facial hair came more in fashion in the US during the middle eighteen hundreds.

Last I believe once wages rose, technology advanced guys got their hair cut more frequently to show they had disposable income and time. Also we had wars like every ten years around the turn of the century so a lot teens probably got used to have short hair from their time in the service

      That is what they told men. IT has to do with other matters. Long hair was always a sign of spirituality. Styx is surely right but you need to add this background as well. And if you see "modernity" and the whole process of western despiritualization things start to make sense. There is always an "explanation" and a "reason" that is given to the common average people... .

      Indians today see a fat belly as a good thing on a man, the young men there walk around puffing their bellies out - it's a sign of wealth, you can afford to eat well.. You don't see many thin Brahmin.

    Vikings had long hair. They also had combs to keep their mane looking good and some archeologists say they even bleached their hair blonde if they weren't blonde already. They had tooth brushes as well and bathed every week. Women, even the English women thought that they were sexy and exuded masculinity.

    Long hair is inconvenient for grappling. They didn't have rash guards and spats/singlets back then, so that explains the nudity. When you're actually fighting though, sexual thoughts never occur. I think that is an outsiders projection. The only thoughts that occur along the lines of: "Oh fuck, my arm's going to break, tap, tap, TAP!"
    I get what you're saying, though. In Japan, long hair was also seen as being healthy.

    What you are saying about the Middle Ages is bullshit. There were periods of famine and the deprivation of war, but there are English records, for example, detailing far more varied and nourishing diets among the peasantry than stale bread and ale. Many of them kept their own animals, sold and consumed the excess of their labour and hunted on the commons. Town craftsmen of the lower orders are recorded as eating relatively well and having respectably well-furnished homes. The idea the society of the High Middle Ages could have been maintained for any period of time by keeping the peasants effectively on crumbs and dregs is utterly absurd, however backward and impoverished their existence might appear to us in retrospect. Europe was a developed agricultural and manufacturing society in the Middle Ages. It produced immense amounts of foods, built astounding architecture, maintained towns, monasteries, cities and fleets. The economy was more perilous and vulnerable to catastrophe but the condition of the average person was not usually one of abject desperation and poverty.

    • @ishmaelforester9825
      @ishmaelforester9825 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The mortal torment of the average person was the generality of things like natural famine, disease, war, hard labour etc, but they were not constantly scraping around and begging for a morsel of bread. Even the peasants of England in the Middle Ages considered that a debased, unnatural and unjust condition when it occurred.

    Sorry, but I have to call BS on some of this. Greeks and Romans had close-cropped hair. Gayness had nothing to do with it. In the ancient world it was considered hygienic. Look at rulers of the 19th century and notice they had short hair. Napolean didn't look like the member of a hair band. Western civ largely looked to the ancient world for inspiration. Yes, a lot of people in the middle ages had long hair but short hair was not a slave thing. They did use wigs in the 17th and 18th century as a symbol of elite status but it was not the Victorian era and temperance that change hair styles. You had some men in the old west with long hair and you had some with short hair., It was a personal choice. And it became more urban to have short hair. Read up on Peter the Great. He wanted to modernize Russia so he had men cut off their beards and shorn their hair to look more European. Because long hair was considered old fashioned.

      Ive kept long and short hair and don't care either way, but I had been under the impression that the 'short hair clean shaven' look grew out of military traditions. Most of the historic leaders on the 'short-hair' list seem to be militaristic. Perhaps it would be fair to characterize long hair as more associated with peace, of course plenty of warrior cultures kept long hair too. /shrug

    • @JamesHudnall
      @JamesHudnall 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, the military is part of it but in Europe they let you have long hair in the military. At least in the Scandinavian countries. I have had long and short hair. I prefer short now because it's easier to deal with,. In Styx's case long hair works for him because he is so thin it gives his head more volume. So he looks bigger than he would otherwise. He shouldn't care what people say about his hair unless he starts wearing a man bun :)

    • @cxtralu
      @cxtralu 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I thought the short hair shaved face look emerged from the industrial revolution, as you wouldn't want the hair to get in the way or get caught in machinery. I had a locksmith class in school and the teacher repeated over and over how important it was to have your hair out of the way and the right clothing for the job (in fact he'd kick us out of class if we forgot to bring and wear the blue lab coats), occasionally mentioning horrific accidents that could occur if we didn't follow the safety rules. These days I see long hair as an indication of an artistic and slightly feminine personality, while short hair as disciplined, industrious and masculine personality.

    Honestly I think the whole concept of masculinity has no true meaning other than the present concepts of your current societal standards. You can talk all you want about what masculinity was in previous time periods, but like most ideas, the concept of masculinity changes. In the end its nothing more than what the general society believes it is.

    In the ancient world, due to the influence of Hippocrates, women's long hair helped them draw fluids (semen) up into themselves and become pregnant. Men with long hair were considered effeminate, because there job was to pump the fluids, not absorb them. The only women with short hair were prostitutes, who were not interested in procreation.
    But this predates Hippocrates: witness the story of Samson. He was under a vow of purity and humility which involved wearing long hair in order to deliberately appear effeminate. Why? So no one would attribute his feats of strength and prowess in battle to his "manliness" but to God; God therefore got the glory. When he foolishly let his hair be cut, God stopped helping him; when it finally grew in, He helped him one last time.
    Besides: long hair in modern men is part and parcel with women wearing pants, burning their bras, growing out their pit and leg hair, taking the pill/having abortions, and homosexuality; it's all meant to spit in the eye of traditional sex roles and practices, and reject anything traditional at all.

    Long or short hair does not mean much. Ancient warriors had long hair, pioneers, people that lived in the forest, etc..all over the world. Hair, or lack of hair, does not make a person strong, tough, or a good strong worker. Hair means nothing. What you do is what matters. George Washington had long hair. Men, dont spend too much time on your appearance, dont shave your body hair, etc..dont let women mind fuck you into shaving your mustaches, I see a lot of chicks with fake mustaches, and trying to shame men into not having a mustache. This is because they want to take all the rest of your masculinity and destroy YOU!

    Short hair and shaving came into modern vogue not due to temperance but due to World War I. Between lice in the trenches and the new reality of gas warfare, cropped hair and shaved faces became the norm (most gas masks require a facial seal to work, and facial hair gets in the way). World War I was an enormous enough event to influence culture in many ways; the wristwatch also came into popularity during this period.
    War often influences culture. For example, from the late Victorian era through the beginning of WWII, a men's suit was generally understood to mean a coat, two pairs of pants, and a waistcoat or vest. If you went to any tailor or clothier in that period and said you were looking for a suit, that's what you would get. However, WW II led to shortages and fabric rationing, so the wartime/postwar concept of a men's suit changed to just a coat and one pair of pants, preferably with a longer but narrower tie to cover the exposed shirt front.

    Using a standard of hair length from a 1000 years ago is not a very good excuse for your personal choice about it's length. As someone with much thicker, fuller hair than you have Styx, having had long hair in the past was a major inconvenience. Firstly, it never grew in right, it looked wild and unkempt, and I didn't like the way it looked on me. As some of my friends had long hair at a time when long hair on a man was in style, trying to keep up with a trend was costing me time in the morning as drying and brushing out the huge hair I had took a half hour or longer, time I could use for other, more important things. I didn't wear my hair short until I got into the military, and it opened up a whole new world for me. Gone where the days of spending tons of time in front of a mirror with a blow dryer and brush. Then, as I do now since I keep it short, just run a towel over it, brush it out once and I'm ready to face the world, and It looks so much neater that women seam to notice me more with short hair as opposed to long. One thing more, I do not get confused for a female from the back, as I'm sure you do more times than you'd like to admit.

    Short hair was probably related to the military. Of course the royals like the Merovingian had long hair. Its associated with femininity because long hair is associated with health and health for women is tantamount to beauty. Women who cut their hair are generally not considered as attractive no doubt because it implies disease and malnutrition.
    From Plutarch:
    2 Now the Abantes were the first to cut
    their hair in this manner, not under instruction from the Arabians, as
    some suppose, nor yet in emulation of the Mysians, but because they were
    war-like men and close fighters, who had learned beyond all other men
    to force their way into close quarters with their enemies. Archilochus
    is witness to this in the following words:-

    3 "Not many bows indeed will be stretched tight, nor frequent slings
    Be whirled, when Ares joins men in the moil of war
    Upon the plain, but swords will do their mournful work;
    For this is the warfare wherein those men are expert
    Who lord it over Euboea and are famous with the spear."10

    p13
    4 Therefore, in order that they might not
    give their enemies a hold by their hair, they cut it off. And Alexander
    of Macedon doubtless understood this when, as they say, he ordered his
    generals to have the beards of their Macedonians shaved, since these
    afforded the readiest hold in battle.

    You say your name as war-wick and not warrick? In England the second W is silent... though to be fair more Americans drive me up the wall with their pronunciation of Johanson than Warwick. It's "yo-hanson" here instead of "jo-hanson", which is the Scandi form of the English "Johnson". When I went to Seattle one time the bus driver went past the Warwick Hotel and a piece of me died inside to hear "war-wick" - the second W is silent! Still I didn't say anything because I'm English and it would have been rude. If an American wants it to be "war-wick" in America then that's how it is :P

    Nope, the Romans had short hair and were clean shaven and were recognized in the provinces by that unusual trait. Short hair, for them, was a sign of self-mastery and self-control which were in many ways new concepts in the 3rd century. But it's true that once the Empire fell, long hair was the European norm at least for gentry. Generally speaking, hair is associated with sexuality and long hair with unbridled sexuality and sensuousness. I, personally, have always preferred it long on both men and women.

    Chivalry roughly translates to horseman. It never really existed as a code of conduct in the sense we understand it to be now, as romanticized by the Victorians. It is a poorly defined thing that more or less had to do with mounted warfare, and the responsibilities of a professional soldier to his sworn liege. The term knight itself is murky concept that doesn't even really fully take shape until the later middle ages when professionally trained heavily armored cavalry was starting to be broken down into two somewhat distinct but often overlapping groups, the pseudo noble feudal knight and the Man-at-arms (which itself probably never quite existed as a stand alone term).
    Hairstyles varied at different times in the middle ages. The Romanized peoples of the early middle ages (even the elites) in Western Europe would be short haired and often clean shaven, in contrast to the "Barbarians". The Merovingian kings were distinct for their long hair among the Christians. Some historians theorize that Pepin "The Short" who is recognized as the founder of the Carolingian dynasty may be a nod to his length of his hair as per his lower status compared to his sons. The later Anglo-Saxon kings of England were long haired in contrast to their clean shaved Norman counterparts, who had arguably the worst fashion sense with their half shaved (the rear half) heads.

    When Marius created the first professional Roman army they made all the soldiers cut their hair and shave their beards. It was done for cleanliness, but it also imposed a form of discipline and took away their individuality. Being clean shaven came to mark you as Roman while having a beard was seen as Greek. I love history and this is a really interesting topic so I just had to add something.

    Furthermore i would like to add that in a lot of traditions and times of the past long hair was seen as a sign of spirituality. Interstingly here are the biblical nazirites that were meant to serve their whole life as some sort of priests without ever marrying etc. . Or think about the vril women that never cut their hair once and were meant to stay virgins (which is a whole different topic).
    Also according to my knowledge the hair shaving of slaves had also to do with symbolic and actual spiritual matters, basicly it was a sign that their spirit is broken so to say.

    I can trace my lineage that my primogeniture as it is the legitimate one back to the high middle ages to those landrobbing knights in Prussia which mixed with the local Prussen. Before that my earliest ancestors were those Germanic tribes (maybe Suebi? Burgunds? Franks? Cherusci? Teutons maybe even? I really don't know).
    Learning about all of that in addition to my study of the classical to late classic period and later myths which originated in this time period really moved me to wearing longer hair, tied up in the traditional style of the Germanic hair knot, so it doesn't get in the way of my daily work, and a beard. I'm learning more and more every day and it really gave my study of history especially in that period a huge push.
    I think knowing about your lineage, heritage and traditions is really important in this day and age and it can in many aspects improve ones own livelihood by adding a sense of pride which particullarily in German society is missing to a degree that can only be called the murder of culture, Kulturmord.

    Interesting but your theory is not entirely true, as a historician I can say that long hair and beards in history of Europe were depended from particulars tribes. For example Franks believed that long hair have magical atributes. Vikings had beards but they had been shaving cheeks. Lombards had beards, although their hair were shaved into particular way. Long hair were not often because it interfered with the work or at fight (each example you can find into sources). I had long hair but I had to cut when I started to boxing. It was the worst experience when I went on my first training of boxing and my hair were covering my face. No way, long hair are not for fight.

    Long hair on men is glorious as long as they don't fashion it into a "man-bun" on the top of their head and stare at themselves in the mirror for hours at a time.

    Lol wow. Styx got his feelings hurt by mean comments on his appearance, so he made this video to respond. This whole video reeks of beta. Real men look how they want and do what they want. The people telling you to cut your hair are stupid, but so are you for attacking them for having short hair. Those who are masters of their lives don't need to justify themselves, that's a hallmark of a weak person who quakes with fear before society. I like most of your stuff Styx, but this was a terrible take. This is an old video, so I hope you've matured from these whiny beta arguments.

      He never attacked people for having short hair, he was simply explaining the history that may be uncomfortable and hard to hear for those with short hair, because it goes against almost everything they had been told about short hair. He even said “Then again I’m sure most of you don’t go naked wrestling with the boys”.

      @@mr.coffee5220 Except that's not accurate. Styx said it started in the early 20th century. Look at paintings of the American founding fathers or even people in Europe of the same era. Huh, they don't look like long haired barbarians, do they? That's way before the 20th century. Wow, looks like he's wrong. So either he's ignorant of the topic or he just picked an argument that makes him feel better about himself.

    All good points, historically so much of a masculine appearance in Europe was divided between various cultural drives. In Ancient Greece, Athenians had shorter hair, but Spartans had long hair. You see that same conflicted definition when the Celtic and Germanic tribes valued long hair as a sign virility, while the Romans saw short hair as a sign of masculine discipline and taciturnity. It is all fascinating and in modern times it all comes back into the fore.

    "Your ancestors were drunks, ran around killing people on a regular basis, if they were soldiering. The knights in shining armour were land pirates that terrorized the local population into obeisance, chivalry is a myth" you need a citation here, Styx. Its unlikely that knights, while functioning as a policing force "regularly" terrorized and killed people as a show of force to get people submit. Sure, it happened on rare occasions, but a "regular" occurence? Not very likely. It's comparable to modern cops, isnt it? Protecting and serving are fairly chivalrous things to do, but we know plenty of cops are rotten to the core. But a majority of cops still do their best to uphold those basic tenets. No reason to assume the knights werent similar.

    Not to mention long hair in general are basically a form of energetic antennas, theyr extensions of your nervous system, Intuition, stronger sense of spiritual connection & awarness of surroundings (it's been proven that people with longer hair are able to sense better,feel threat approaching from distance than a bald person, there's very good reason why people are shaved in army,prison,buddhism,religions,culture(figure that yourself)... And many reasons why it was a big thing in older cultures,life...
    Each individual is more unique than we give credit too,from body,perception,thinking,sexuality,etc so hair-thing may apply differently to everyone... Personally i can say that having short hair, and long hair in terms of spiritual thinking,feelings,intuition,general sense of deeper & usual feeling is different beyond words could ever explain...
    Hair are like wires,antennas,wires growing connecting to earth & environment. Again i just ramble,it's my personal experience, take everything with a grain of salt,experience,research YOURSELF never EVER take words of others at face value... I wish our hair would grow VERY fast, for me beard,mustache, body hair are nasty and a total waste of energy,compounds,nutrition i wish all of that would be used to grow our hair instead... :)
