  • On this Aotearoa New Zealand history tour we are exploring Jellicoe Park. Jellicoe Park is located in Onehunga, Auckland - which was once one of the largest Maori settlements, and eventually an important port on the Manukau Harbour.
It was home to Te Waiohua and Naati Whatua, and was used for farming Kumara, as well as for trade prior to European arrival.
As the Waikato War continued it was the site that many British troops and military supplies arrived to.
Standing in Jellicoe Park today is the last remaining blockhouse, one of twelve military strong posts built around the Auckland region in 1860.
Since the park has also been recognised as a “living monument,” an open green space to remember the fallen soldiers of World War 1, this can be noted by the monument at the entrance to the park.
🔴 In this video series looking at the New Zealand Land Wars, we aim to present the places as they are . We understand that it is not possible to tell the many complex stories of a location with one video, rather we want to make these places available to be visited virtually.
🔴 This is one of the sites of the New Zealand Land Wars Waikato driving tour. For more information about this site, we have collected some resources which can be used to understand more context -
