      @@cavv0667 I tried whiskey with irish coffee. Most probably bottom of the line quality...it added like a sawdust/tree bark flavor to the coffee. Needless to say, i dont have such issues if i add our native brandy or rum to it do...

    Actually, the requirement of new barrels for bourbon has an interesting consequence. Because they can't reuse them for bourbon they sell them off to other firms; a lot of those used barrels get dismantled, shipped to Scotland, rebuilt, and then used to make Scotch; but this is a highly secret process - the people putting the barrels back together don't know where they've come from, nor do they know where they're going to!
    As an aside, because there's no peat on the east coast of Scotland, whisky distilleries on that side don't use it in their process. Islay, being an island on the west side, has a lot of peat, so they use that (they also import quite a bit from Ireland).
    Finally, an unusual one that people might be interested in. Dalwhinnie, a highland distillery in Inverness-shire, have been making a different whisky for the last few years. They call it Winter Gold, it's kinda similar to their 15 yr scotch, but it's intended to be drunk *ice cold*. Seriously, stick it in the freezer for a bit before drinking. I don't know how easy it'll be to get stateside, but something to look out for.

      I'm pretty sure the people making Scotch with bourbon barrels know exactly where the barrels came from. I wouldn't be surprised if many of them have standing agreements with particular bourbon distilleries to get the same aging profile on all their barrels. The *other* thing about this is why it happens this way. A long way back, bourbon distilleries were starting to experiment with reusing barrels to get different flavours (and save money). This did not sit well with the barrelmakers union, who were powerful enough to sway a lawmaker to insist that bourbon must be made in a first use barrel. That meant that bourbon distilleries had a lot of barrels they needed to do something with, scotch distilleries had a source of pre-aged barrels instead of having to do something unproductive with the first spirit they put in the barrel to age it, and the barrelmakers on both sides of the pond have work to do (the barrels are broken down into staves and reassembled then re-charred because the two processes use them at different volumes).

      I don't know if "windshield viper" is a deliberate allusion to the different spellings 'vodka' (Russian) and 'wodka' (Polish), but I like the idea of a windshield viper. Just get a snake to clear the water off for you...

      Definitely Crown Royal that comes in the purple bag. I think Canadian club may have had one for a limited edition bottle, but it wasn't purple. Crown Royal > CC all day everyday in this humble Canadians opinion.

    Early on in US history, rye was actually the most prevalent whiskey. After the Whiskey Rebellion in the 1790s, much of the whiskey production moved from Pennsylvania (where rye was dominant) to Kentucky (which was more corn based). That's when bourbon took over the US whiskey market.

    So my father is an alcoholic I have drank but always get scared that somehow genetically it will trigger something in me. So, I don't really drink but I like the idea of the sommelier experience. I love the laid-back sort of accessible every day feeling I get from the show and the tasting notes make me feel like I kind of understand a drink and get the experience I want from the blending combos of different alcohols and additions. Love the show keep it up thank you!

      I get your fears. I'm told alcoholism runs in my family and I know people who are alcoholics. All I can say is I like to drink but if I'm not feeling up to it, I won't. Even times when I go out to bars with friends, they get far more drunk than I do (and I only drink straight liquor and pretty much only those of 80 proof or higher and they drink pretty much only beer lol) Which brings up another thing. I don't like drinking alone. It's boring because there's no one to share the experience with.

    One of my favorite "loopholes" in the legal definition of bourbon is that you can carry it across the room in a new oak bucket and it's still technically bourbon

      @@20TheGame09 monkey shoulder is good for blended, i hate johnny walker lol, I was turned off to blended until i tried monkey shoulder. If you havent tried it, i reccomend it! its a good price too.

    Most of my dice bags come with the large free sample of Crown Royal. And that dice bag manufacturer has even been nice enough to make different colors of bags (and different flavors of the samples put with them).

    Loved your section on non-distilling producers. Here in Chattanooga, there's a fantastic story about how Chattanooga Whiskey was born. At the time of it's conception, the laws in Tennessee prevented distilling, a pre-Prohibition state law that never got repealed. So they started by buying whiskey from Illinois, and labelling it Chattanooga Whiskey, made in Illinois. When people called, angry that their Chattanooga Whiskey was made in Illinois, they explained to them why it wasn't made in Chattanooga. Doing this garnered tons of support from the community, and they helped get the laws changed. Now all their product is made here in Chattanooga, and they own one of the only solo experimental-only distilleries in the country. I'd love to send you a bottle if you ever wanted to try it, it's fantastic!!

    I was on the Isle of Lewis & Harris in Scotland last year and found that they were starting a distillery. Instead of selling blended whiskey they were doing a limited run of gin. They will discontinue this once the scotch is ready so its kind of a once in a lifetime opportunity to buy their gin. I thought that was a pretty cool idea on their part!

    I love your cocktail education videos, and these longer form discussions about specific spirits. These are SO informative. I also love how this is a practical breakdown of whiskey, not necessarily an exhaustive historical exposé.
    Also, it's hilarious how you start off really sharp and a little rushed because you know that you have a lot of content to cover, and yet you end up the videos much looser and tremendously relaxed, full of anecdotes and self deprecation.

    When you say that, for example, bourbon mash has to be 51% corn, it sounds like you're saying that it has to be exactly 51%, but that's not true. It has to be _at least_ 51% corn. It could be 100% corn, or anywhere inbetween. The same is true for the other whiskeys' percentage requirements.

      Well on the upside I guess it doesn't matter much which rye you use if you're mixing with something as strongly flavored as grapefruit. Doesn't allow for much appreciation of the whiskey though...

    Whisk(e)y Tribe member here LOVING these history sort of videos and it's always great to hear various explanations about whisk(e)y for further understanding.
    My friend and I are exploring whisk(e)y together and doing tastings of all different types/variations. So far we are through about 20 out of the 40 or so we have (small tasting bottles and some larger bottles). It's a super fun journey and we are slowly developing our palate.

    I first found your channel when looking for whisky cocktails. I mostly drink whisky rather than cocktails, much of which are bottles I have collected from my travels to Kentucky (6 distilleries), Texas (12 distilleries) and Scotland (40 distilleries) and in my home state of California (8 distilleries). Visiting distilleries not only has given me a better understanding of whisky production but also an appreciation for those who produce whisky.

    I know this is my second comment in a row, but whatever. I have a story about Scottish clans.
    My girlfriend and I did a Euro trip a couple of years ago, and her last name is McLean. It turns out that the McLean clan has a castle on the Isle of Mull. So, naturally, we had to check it out. We wound up being late for our ferry and having to take the next one, so by the time we got to the castle, they were just closing up for the day and weren't doing any more tours. But, when they learned there was a McLean with us, they were more than happy to make an exception. Actually, they were very excited about it. The castle was amazing, and it's really cool how being from a particular clan automatically gives you this kinship with complete strangers. We don't have anything like that in Canadian culture, so it was neat.
    Side note: if you're ever being driven up a Northern Scottish road by a guy with a lead foot, be prepared to be scared shitless.

    I'm 3 years late to this, but I've discovered that whiskey is generally gluten-free (additives excluded), so I'm starting to dive into whiskey with my move to New Orleans. So thank you for these videos. They're really informative and useful to those of us learning how to drink for the pleasure of the flavour, not just to get hammered.

    It's important to note that Canadian whisky does not have a mash bill in the American sense. It is blended from a combination of single-grain whiskies, which means a small amount of rye or other flavouring grain has a greater impact on the final taste than an equal amount in an unblended American whiskey.

    You forget that grains contain starch not sugar, so you either need to malt them or you need to add industrial enzymes. That's where that whole malt vs. grain whisky thing comes from, despite malt being made of grain too.

    Loved this "class" on whiskey! As someone who primarily enjoys aged anejo tequilas and had always been curious about this world of spirits, I learned a lot. Genuinely curious about that Monkey Shoulder and may have to seek it out.
    I believe a lot of people would benefit from a similar style of video dedicated to the world of tequilas & mezcals, if that's something you'd like to do, I would love that content as well!

    I literally looked up this channel without knowing who you are. This is what I wanted to watch and listen to while I baked my fish and to be honest it sounds crazy but I've never watched these types of channel's before either. Idk what made me think of searching "whiskey tastings". And I was cracking open the moonshine my family made as I searched. Maybe thats why.     *Request for Recommendation:*
    -standard to strong proof (80 proof and up),
    -smooth (blended or aged I don't care I just don't want straight acetone),
    -sweet (southern comfort or a little less in "sweetness"),
    -strongly spiced (I grew up drinking spiced tea, I love mulling spices and baking spices).
    I am guessing I'd be looking for a blended rye which is on the sweeter side - but I have no idea what brands, or varieties there of, would fit the above desired traits.

      michters toasted barrel rye is my favorite! or 291 M is a rye aged in aspen staves and finished in maple barrels close to 130 proof but the maple finish makes it incredibly unique.

    Interesting anecdote: the term monkey shoulder comes from a condition/deformity(I guess?) that malthouse workers used to develop from turning the malt (sprouting barley) with a shovel, prior to it being fermented into wort. As they were Co stantly twisting one shoulder to turn shovel loads of malt that shoulder would pack on massive amounts of muscle mass and so give the appearance of monkey shoulder. I hope I've remembered that correctly from my trip to Speyside.

    Hi Greg. This is an invitation to the UK. We'll start with London and go to 'The Major Of Scaredy Cat Town' which is a cocktail bar believe it or not. Then up to my home town of Edinburgh which now has one of the worlds best cocktail bars (Panda and Sons) then up to the highlands for some whisky distillery tours. It'll be liver batteringly good fun. Everything gets battered in Scotland! Anytime next year works for me, you'll love it.
