  • The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ are already 4 years old, and from the software side they feel it- but the hardware remains premium and the display gorgeous. How does the S8 hold up in 2021, and could it even be worth buying?

The Galaxy S8 and S8+ have always been some of my favorite Androids, definitely sad to see them already 2 software versions behind. But still, the phones feel premium, and that display is as gorgeous as ever.

You should review the Galaxy S8 Active... It's the best phone I've ever used. Practically indestructible. It also has a 4000 milliamp battery. Not a full review as it's identical to the other models. I'm STILL using it. I use Nova launcher and Dex when I'm mobile.

I miss my S8. It's my very first android phone and I always enjoyed how it perfectly fitted with my hands cause mine are small. Lost it when I made a few cracks on it from dropping and water accidentally went inside. Didn't bother to fix it anymore as my father replaced it with S9+ purple which I'm currently using now. This feels rather nostalgic. Missing S8 and my father who died last year from Covid.. have a great day anyway if you're reading this. :)

In medium to low light this phones camera completely falls apart due to not having a night mode or a big sensor or next level processing. I had one since launch and just now upgraded to an s21 ultra when it came out. Much better camera on the s21, even tho they are "only" 4 years apart. If you compare this s8 camera to like a sony flagship then yea the s8 will be better but compare it to any serious phone (midrangers included) and it will be much worse.

Me too. Put mine in a case I ordered before the phone got in the moment I opened it and put on a screen protector that's still on it that kinda needs to be replaced but still works, and even cut out a rectangle from a glass screen protector from my old phone and put it over the camera and fingerprint thing I never use so even the parts on the back that the case doesn't protect are still like new. Battery is really good too for a 4 year old phone, gets me through the day no problem and if I had to guess I would say it's at about 75-80% of original capacity. My only complaint is that the curved screen means no tempered glass screen protectors, only kinda good plastic ones. I hate curved screens and corners and I'm glad Samsung has moved more towards flat screen again and corners that are 99% square, they went too far with the rounding of the s8 that year and then realized lots of people didn't like it and it wasn't as functional.

I think since the s6 they still deliver security patches for about four years. But the s7 received a security patch in September 2020. So depending if there happens to be a major issue then you could see the s8 still receiving security patches for 4-5 years or any time between that. After the first two years I think they move their security patches quarterly. Starting with the Galaxy s10 line they are supposed to get three major OS updates. I don't care for major OS updates so as long as the phone is secure then fours years of support is pretty good to me. I had Note 4 until it died in 2019. Even then I think the display was amazing in 2019. Samsung does make one of the best displays on the market.

After a cascade of events in attempting to purchase a new one [brand/model withheld... errors were no one's fault but just the way things go sometimes], I ended up buying, receiving 2 [wrong] phone models with all related goodies...but just returning them since. I never got the newest, latest and greatest...and now that I found your wonderful video, I see that for my needs, I am okay to keep this Samsung S8 for awhile longer. I'm bookmarking your show and will now check to see if its more advisable to buy a replacement battery vs. a new phone for someone who uses their phone 98% for very few calls and some occasional GPS direction. Thanks!

That 1st week in April when the phone hit the market I made the purchase.
It really stood the test of time for the whole 4 years I owned it. Only recently in the last month have I noticed the software where the reliability time start to break down.
    I think 4 years it came down to a $1.23 a day
For me that's an unbelievable deal.
I'd say if you're desperate yeah get the phone but set your money aside for something new. If you're like me the financial impact was better to buy the phone outright and do a prepaid plan.
I intend to buy the Galaxy S21 outright and continue to do the prepaid system hope this helps this helps if you're reading this

Unfortunately it suffered from an overcharge last night due to the little chip responsible for regulating the charge shorted out and I lost mostly some pics and stuff but lucky it was backed up (S8 users make sure you backup your data more often as the overcharge issue is a common discrepancy to that phone). I've had my S8 for a few years now and have always loved it. The main problems I have with it are that certain apps (like RPGs) make it super hot, battery drains pretty fast usually , it charges really slowly with longer cords. Besides that, everything else is great. I've been thinking of getting the S10 but I'd most likely have the same problem with that regarding gaming lol (getting hot). I might get one though simply because it has better storage and better battery, along with all the other cool improvements. 💛
Also, did you just call that "burnin"?? When an image stays on the screen despite being in other apps and stuff. I've had that for a while too because most of my screen is pink and the top of it shows a search bar but it doesn't really bother me because most of the time I don't even notice it haha.

I have the s8 since 2017. It is a wonderful phone. I have people complimenting my photography skills(which I have none) using the s8. I agree with 95 percent with what you said in the video. Burn in is a big problem especially if you are using the Waze GPS on roadtrips during hot summers and the phone needs to be at the highest lighting and basically frying the phone. I still see the miles and the navigation stuff slightly on the screens. Also true that unless you have a great deal, which I came across this past weekend, I would keep this phone for a couple more years. But overall a really good analysis .

I actually just upgraded from an S8 to an S21 one week ago. I have to say, the speed difference is very noticeable. Also, the battery is much better, lasting over 5 hours of screen on time (maybe even 6 if you push it), while my S8 maxed out at like 3.5 hours. It is much better overall. My S8 served me well though. I had it since October 2017 and it served me pretty well. As someone with an interest in software, it bummed me out that it didn't get Android 10 while my previous iPhone 6S still gets updated. I'm glad Samsung is promising 3 years of updates now. My S8 served me well though. It was decently fast, but did hang at times. I loved still having a headphone jack. I loved having a Pro mode on the camera to flex my night star shots that iPhones couldn't take. There was a lot I loved about my S8, but it was getting about time for an upgrade, and I'm happy I decided to get the S21. Despite the lack of a headphone jack, plastic back, and 1080p screen, it is a much better phone overall in pretty much every way apart from what I mentioned (but honestly the 1080p and plastic back I am fine with since I can't really tell the difference). It is way faster and not having to charge my battery before bed is nice, plus I'm interested to see what the 3 cameras can do, and I like the in screen fingerprint scanner. I would not recommend people to buy the S8 now, but it was a great phone for what it lasted me for. That's much of what made me stick with Samsung. I still have my S8, and it is quite a difference, but it is still an okay phone and was a great phone 4 years ago.

I always wondered what would happen if Samsung adopted their own Tizen os and gave their phones 4 years of support. That would be pretty cool considering they make their own chips and their main competitor is apple

Still have my original S8, & take it everywhere I go. The OtterBox Defender case it's in is an absolute MUST!!! Still love this phone.

Still rocking my S8+ and see no need to upgrade, other than I won't get any updates anymore. Custom ROMs were a thing for me with the One Plus One, but I simply don't see the need here.
I just run the Nova Launcher since 3 years now and have never looked back. Great phone! ❤

I just traded in my my note 8 for the s21 ultra. Tbh as amazing as the s21 is, the note 8 was still pretty great. Unfortunately i did begin to see it slow down a bit and some apps began to have issues so I decided to upgrade. Definitely an improvement but, honestly it's not a life changing upgrade.

Planned obsolescence at its finest unfortunately.. the apps keep getting updated and occasionally firmware updates by different manufacturers have purposely foiled their own devices near the end of/past support.. to really encourage replacement

I have an S8+ with LineageOS installed, the performance is definetly better than my Galaxy S9+ and almost better than the S10+ with the Stock Samsung ROM, only thing that is bs with custom roms is the fact that you can only watch Streaming Services in SD Quality because it loses the Widevine L1 Certification

My S8 Active has been my favorite phone. I wish that Samsung still made the Active line. But alas, time to move on as Samsung is discontinuing security updates for the S8's. Samsung said that the S8s are at the end of service. My screen is burning in as well. (on bright screens, I can see my keyboard at all times). Good run on a great phone. Kinda hurt to give it up. Hopefully the S21 Ultra will be a good replacement. Was super tempting to get the ZFold. I'll wait until it's a bit thinner. RIP S8 Active! I beat the hell outta you and you took it like a champ!
