Thanks for the video. I am 102 Kg and I made some experiment today and found that 3 is too soft and 5 felt too hard. I tried 4 and it was spot on ;) By the way, the tool that comes with the bike sometimes slips when you try to decrease the number, but goes fine when you increase the number. If this happens to you, try to change the tool from Yamaha, or, just keep increasing the number 3-4-5-6, what will happen is that that it will then go back to 1. Don't panic when you hear a clicking sound when you go from 6 directly to 1. This is normal. It took may half a day to realize this, so I thought about sharing it with you guys. It might save someone half-day ;)
I really cant tell what preload am at. what references are there, you said that you knew you were at five because there were two left? I looked and it wraps around, how do you know when its maxed... is there a notch?
I'm 5-10 and 125 pounds and my feet are about 1/4-1/2in away from completely being on the ground. hopefully I can get it adjusted where I can have complete footing.
I'm 6'1" and 190lb in gear [today at least] and set my preload at 5 this morning. The bike turns in a lot quicker and is more responsive / agile. However, the roads around my way can be very rough and I certainly noticed the difference between 5 and the default 3 setting. I found the 3 setting to be comfortable but at times the bike was too slow to turn in. Tomorrow I'm going to try setting 4 which I think should be a good compromise between comfort and responsiveness. EDIT: The tool that came with the bike slips out when I try to decrease the preload. Does anyone know of a better quality version of this tool ?
If you happen to remember i am 5'8 and 190 did you think setting at 4 was better? Did this make it so you sat lower and could place more footing? Or did it firm it up so that there was less give for your weight?

Should I adjust it myself? Does it have to be adjusted annually/per *km/etc. ?
Hi Kevin, the preload does two things. It can raise/lower the bike (slightly) and the second is ride and comfort. There is no magic bullet answer from Yamaha. The preload or sag is changed for riding style - higher is firmer and lower is softer. If you ride 2-up you'll want a firmer ride so the bike doesn't bottom out. If your 6'3 and 230 lbs you'll want to jack it up. Setting 3 was good for me too but I changed it to 4 - I'm 5'10 and 180lbs. I like a firmer ride. My guess is the bike is set up for an average rider at 160lbs and under 6'. If you ride on bumpy roads a softer setting at 2 or 3 may be better. It's a personal comfort thing more than anything. I hope this helps.

Regarding the servicing of the chain in that area, it doesn't do much because you actually need to clean/lube the underside where the links make physical contact with the sprockets. Side note, how long is your riding season and which part of Ont are you in?
Why should you be adjusting the preload? Is it for height of the bike? or just bounce when riding? I have an R3 idk what the preload is but it is pretty bouncy
Get a lowering kit if you want it lower. It’s for the bounce when riding. That’s the main person. If it’s bouncing too much and the shocks seem squishy you need to tighten it. If it’s so tight that when it bounces it’s hard then you should adjust it accordingly
Hi there. You can get away with leaving the factory setting. That’s just my opinion but if you think the rider is too stiff you can always softer. I wouldn’t recommend going harder.
Strange. I’m 5’6 and I can’t flatfoot my r3. I have a 2017. I’m thinking of changing the preload to 1 so I can flatfoot. I’m brand new to ridding so flat footing gives me ease of mind.

I would say the r6, Had a Buddy get on the misses R3 about the same size and nothing worked for him. Unless aftermarket springs are in your budget.
