Has anyone noticed how Matt is getting more & more tempted to keep some of these refurbished cars I've mentioned it before but I think he wants to build a classic car collection He did say in the video "if i had the space I'd keep it"
I have noticed that, and often understand where he's coming from. But this pile of crap i have no idea why anybody would want it. As the man himself said - very few left on the road, low miles, near 20 years old.....all the ingredients for a future classic to become a classic, and it's 1500 quid. Horrible looking car. I'd rather have a Duke and we all know how Matt feels about those! Really surprised he's got the time of day for something like this.
Thanks for the look-back. Never got this car. I owned an original 1996 SLK (2.0l supercharged) from new. By the time this car came out, the SLK version 2 was out in Europe at around the same price. The SLK was a hardtop convertible, this has a fixed roof. It clearly works for you and the low mileage and good bodywork is attractive. Good luck with the sale!
I had this exact spec Crossfire about 15 years ago. The same sensor went a week after I bought it! Loved it for a couple of years, great looks but a harsh ride.
I must keep a look out for a squatting dog and see if it reminds me of this car. I'm not convinced it will ever be a sought after classic but it will become one of those, 'I remember those, not seen one for years' cars. Well done for keeping it on the road in good fettle. Seasons greetings and thanks for the entertainment.
A very interesting and unconventional car, which is becoming very rare now. I clearly remember watching Jeremy Clarkson feeling very underwhelmed by this car in an episode of Too Gear. It doesn’t seem that long ago, but in fact, it is over two decades ago now, wow how time flies. This example is in amazing condition, improved by you Matt, I hope you get your asking price for it. Wishing you and your family a very happy Christmas, and best wishes for the New Year❤.
Never liked these but actually that has come up a treat and looks amazing AND I see it’s sold already! Nice work, Matt. Another car kept on the road and in great condition. Merry Christmas, mate and all the best with the business for 2025. 👍👍👍
I owned a mint black auto and really enjoyed my time with it. Very good for cruising/long journeys and it never let me down reliability wise. Good car!
These probably don’t have the image problem that SLKs have but metal folding roof and fully ULEZ compliant outside central London at least must make them a better buy. One for sale (private admittedly) near me - 57 reg and lower mileage for same money.
No. It's NOT a looker! You showed us the front - Very American blingy chrome trims on the big grill - ugh! A corrugated bonnet - just.... why? But then you took us round the back. I nearly threw up at that offensive shape. But I was trying to place what was so offensive about it. With that crouching rear end and oversize back wheels it does have odd look of a Hyena about it. Then you quoted Clarkson. That's it! I had not heard that quote before, but JC was spot on. You'd expect a great steaming turd to be left in the road after you drove away from the lights. Some cars have that 'something' that makes you look back at them as you walk away after you've parked them, or pull back the living room curtain at home for a peek at it on the drive. This - Well I wouldn't have it in the first place, but if it was my only temporary transport (a loan car or suchlike) I'd park it round the corner. And ditch it as soon as possible. And yes, good handling (i.e "it's a driver's car" or not) does matter. I really can't see anything going for the Crossfire except (because of all the above) if funds are tight, it'll be cheap. Is it as offensive to look at as the PT? Not much in it, I'd say.
I had a Crossfire and really liked it. Well built, quick (not fast in base trim) comfortable and stylish. Bad was the recirculating ball steering (steered like a truck compared to rivals with rack and pinion; cheap interior with brushed silver trim not holding up well. Some hard angles and plastics in the interior.
Ohh no, i thought these had gone extinct. Jeremy Clarckson said it reminded him of a dog having a no.2 at the back ! Reliability despite the Mercedes underpinnings is not great, rust and suspension issues are very common and as you have found out they can and do leave you stranded. Best of luck with this one, hope it sells never to be seen again.
For some it may not look pretty, but for someone that car has a purpose and especially for that price. Spot on Matt, love seeing these old car restorations, especially in the right hands. Have a great Xmas. 🎄
Perfect timing for this. I’ve recently been wondering what exactly is wrong with crossfires at this price point. Because some are priced around here and seemingly in the same condition (on paper) as other examples for 5k if this car comes good I might consider a cheap one but I predict you’re going to massively overspend.
Ah, the "wide-boy's SLK" ...best thing about it is that you see the owners coming. Still, thanks for the varied content, and happy holidays to all! Cheers Matt have a great 2025!

Main downsides were poor rear visibility (I fitted parking sensors to mine) and the cost of some (Mercedes-derived) parts. I had to replace the steering box on mine and even though I sourced the part from the States the bill was well into four figures. I also had to repair the heated seats as the elements had failed, apparently a common fault.

These engines are known for their reliability but it has been a while since they were in production. Do you know of any other newer engines used (in more interesting cars worth owning), that are as reliable?
This is one of those cars that I would buy if reliability wasn't a concern. Sadly no one seems to trust American cars, and there's not much of a support network for them around here. Chrysler and Pontiac have made some really nice looking cars.
I'm pretty firm in the Jeremy Clarkson school of thought on this car. Not to parrot him, but because i think that he's right this time. ...and that the design overall is awkward. ...but it is a rare car, and low mileage, so it definitely needs to be spiffed up. ...and as per usual, you did good Matt. Kudos. ...and transport included, cause of course that cost is part of the cars price, i still think you ended up with impressive value for money. ..and that's what a buyer will get too, imho. I dont like them, but you dont find a ton of low mileage unusual cars for four grand.

My Grandma had this car… I think that’s all I need to say.

Creep / simp ! 🙄
Our defence lawyer had a new one in 2005. Looked rather special. ❤ Swanky motor.
I like these, I even considered getting one a few years ago. Pre 2006 tax isn't too bad either.
Used to dislike em when then came out but now I sort of appreciate them on the road.
That was 1.500£ too expensive...
Trash talk!
SRT 6 version available in US was awesome!
And available also in the UK
