Mykal is one of the founding members with Geoff Layne and Earl back in 1997 under the name 4thelove when they were in high school. Layne was a baritone. They had no beatboxer except Geoff when needed.
In 2000 Scott Porter joined as their beatboxer. They sang on street corners and in front of businesses.
This was one of the songs they sang so was fitting they did it now.
Mykal left in 2002 for a very successful Broadway career. Doing and writing musicals. He is up for a Grammy.
Scott left in 2003. That's when Layne took over.
They actually filmed this when they filmed Be Prepared but was short on time so they did it in the shorts format.
All their shorts are done in the Oviedo Mall in Orlando FL before they open.
This is where Pattycake Productions Studios is located. And where Voiceplay and Geoff film most of their videos. Some are in other places. They always mention the studio or location in their credits.
BTW - They did once have a different beatboxer and Layne was their baritone. When Scott (the beatboxer) left for an acting career, Layne thought it would be easier for them to find a new baritone than trying to find a new beatboxer. Besides he wanted to give it a try. This was quite awhile ago. But, yes, you're right Layne has a great voice and I always love to hear it.
I love that they basically took us to church on this one! A bit of a gospel feel to it by the end. It feels to me like a promise to see us through bad times.
Thanks for another reaction to VoicePlay. I had been hoping that VoicePlay would cover "Stand By Me" eventually. Mykal was the perfect collaborator for this one. A lovely song with a beautiful message about true friendship.
Keep a watch out, VoicePlay and Geoff solo each should be premiering their Christmas tunes on TH-cam very, very soon...likely by the end of this week.
I figured they used the vertical format because it made it easy to Stand By Me.
