I love how they always give everyone a verse in their arrangements. Mykal (Michael) killed this! He’s incredible. They layered the vocals so Layne did the beatboxing. They will never use actual drums since they are acapella. 😊
Mykal (Michael) was in Be Prepared. Also was one of the original members back in school days and a couple of years after before he went to Broadway. This one is beautiful.
I absolutely love the interaction between the guys, particularly between Cesar and Mykal, during this song- Cesar looking around at the four other men as he sings "as long as you stand by me;" Cesar reacts to Mykal going full gospel at one point, apparently fanning himself in delight; Mykal, looking up at Cesar in appreciation of a line that he sang, and Cesar responding with a look of "I've got you;" and finally, Mykal hugging Cesar (and I think also Geoff) at the very end. This whole video is just a musical hug! Thoroughly enjoyed your reaction - you were right about wanting Eli to have the lead, at least to some extent, because he's got such a great rock voice. And of course, we love it when Layne sings. He does a great job with the beatboxing, but he has a beautiful voice too
I had been hoping that VoicePlay would cover "Stand By Me" eventually and then they did. Layne did a great job arranging it. Mykal ("Michael") was the perfect collaborator for this one. Mykal was also in their "Just Sing" video done for charity during the pandemic shutdown. Layne was the group's baritone until Scott Porter left them for acting when he took over beatboxing. We love it when Layne sings a solo. (They were renamed 4:2FIVE when Scott joined and then eventually VoicePlay.) Layne's beatboxing is usually layered. During the rare times that they do use an instrument it is always on camera, front and center. Anytime you hear anything else weird, it's Layne! (Listen to his sleigh bells in The Chipmunk Song). Apparently Layne, Geoff, Earl, and Mykal sang this song together when they were teenagers. Mykal was a founding member when VoicePlay was originally formed and named 4theLove, a barbershop quartet. He left them early on for a successful career on Broadway. Mykal had a plane to catch and this format is quicker so Layne chose to do this full video vertically in the mall. They did this second video when Mykal was in town to film "Be Prepared" with VoicePlay. Since "Scar" had most of the lyrics in that one, they wanted to do another that featured Mykal more. A lovely song with a beautiful message about true friendship
They always use multiple tracks, sometimes doubling themselves, sometimes having bass and vocal percussion beneath Geoff and Layne doing verses/harmonies. But it's all acappella, except for the two videos where Layne plays his violin (earning him the nickname, VioLayne)
Additionally - if they use something physical to make a noise then you will see it. Example: the baseball bat in "Seven Nation Army". If you don't see something portraying the sound, then it was probably Layne. I believe there have been exceptions for animal noises, but those were still basically 'vocal' just not human. (the goat scream in "Bruno")
@@hwyla4416 The keys Cesar is holding in Hoist The Colours. VioLayne is also in.... Warriors which earned him the name, and in The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
Mykal (pronounced Michael) was in their Halloween release last fall - Be Prepared. That one naturally featured Geoff, so they wanted to do this one also to feature more of Mykal. They were short on time before he had to go back to NY, so they filmed this one in their ‘mall format’ since it was the quickest to film.

Be Prepared was in September.
Thriller was their Halloween video.
