Be prepared for the unexpected: lessons of 2020-21, says Army Chief

  • The sudden eruption of Covid 19 and the Chinese incursions in Eastern Ladakh were the two black swan events that cast a dark shadow on India largely and the world as a whole, in the recent past. For India, the two experiences hold out a slew of lessons, Indian Army Chief Gen MM Naravane pointed out in this exclusive interview with Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale. In Eastern Ladakh too, it was clear that it’s our fight alone.
The recognition of these truths brings about an unidirectional focus on self-sufficiency. In fact, 85 per cent of the Army’s contracts this year have been given to Indian companies, including the private sector. However, the private sector needs to mature to higher levels. They need our encouragement and financial support. The Army is assisting them in terms of understanding the environment in which the equipment has to function.

In no other major country I think such a casual conversation in a relaxing environment like that can take place with it's army chief. The leader of one of the world's strongest military speaking like an equal with humility. What a sight to see. We truly are luckily to have a general such as him.

Nitin, just a small suggestion. Please avoid looking at your mobile and going through messages when you are interviewing persons like Indian Army Chief. It may not be intentional, but still it is better to get those devices out of your reach until you complete the interview. When I looked at it, I was wondering whether the importance of our Army Chief interview is getting diluted! I have seen this happening in few of your other programmes,, like in India defence conclave held at Delhi where it distorted your attention many times while you are speaking and wants to suggest to you that it brings down the seriousness of the situation. Since you are using cordless head phones etc, you might leave your mobile to your team and if any important message, they could still relay to you in case of any urgency. This is just my humble suggestion to make your interviews more professional since the subjects you are dealing with are not for entertainment but always very serious in nature, like strategic importance to our nation. Keep going.

The Indian COAS is humble, professional & has proved that when gvn a free hand, has proved his dynamism in successfully putting the enemies off-balance. The key take away is that neglecting our Armed Forces & taking a politically- induced lethargic def posture on our borders invites adventurism from our enemies without fear of Indian retribution or retaliation.

He's such a hypocrite ? Just parroting the same lines over and over yet he doesn't say anything about 2000+ horrendous t72's we have in service. If he truly believes independent bharat then ask him when will he order more arjun mk1a's because our current fighting forces will get battered brutally given the old russian crap we totally depend upon.

Good luck negotiating a 70 tonne tank across a ditch when your engineer battalions don't have bridges which can take weight beyond 55 tonnes . A T72 can hide in a bush and ambush another tank with relative ease and success thanks to its 125mm smoothbore gun . Arjun will have a tough time even moving properly let alone ambush another tank . 120mm rifled is old tech now.

It's army's fault all along. The made a GSQR based on which Arjun was built as a 60+ ton tank. If our requirement was to make a middle weight tank of 50-53 ton then why didn't they make the GSQR like that? But things are going to change rapidly as the govt is pushing hard with make1 and make2 category. Time will tell how much successful we can be .

@@rudrakshsinghkatal5609 i dont understand why arjun has rifled gun. Isnt its lifeline shorter than smooth bore gun? And arjun is straight up copy design of leopard tank and also some of t90 i think. What do you think.

Gen. Naravane, you mentioned supporting terrorism in IOK by the Pakistanis. Do you have anything to say about the terrorism that India is supporting in Pakistan? With the recent brazen attack on FC Post in Baluchistan, the CPEC route can't be carried out without Indian involvement. If the Pakistanis, who have lost more than 80.000 people, return it with interest down the road, you must have the courage to take your losses as a courageous soldier. Please stop meddling and following the policy of destabilizing the economic interests of Pakistan and China BRI initiatives. Please ask your RAW to respect what you preach, and otherwise, Indian seven states, Punjab and Kashmir, all are vulnerable jurisdictions. Being a general, you know very well, I suppose, that a prolonged conflict against an invisible enemy will wear down your military. So, it's in the best interest of your country to stop training, arming and financing terrorists in your neighbouring country, Pakistan.

You really believe India sponsored those who attacks? You are delusioned. Pak provided no proof of Indian involvement.

@Apoorv Saxena 19EE17 The kind of weaponry, planning, communication equipment they used shows a regular army trained them. By the way, Pakistanis have sent many dossiers to India through international forums. I am sure they must be preparing something for your satisfaction, they don't start pointing fingers at India, unlike Indians do. They arrested people trained by Indian RAW in Afghanistan that had prescription drugs from India dispensed in India. Pakistanis also detained people that were not circumcised; Afghanis and Pakistanis are Muslims, they all are circumcised due to their religious obligation. Mr. Ajit Doval knows all about these things and your South Block in Delhi as well.

@bhanwar singh rathore Mr. Rathore, watch what you accuse others. Indian policy is the disgusting most policy towards its neighbours. The way you treat your minorities is not only shameful but despicable,, Your government blinded hundreds of innocent women and children in Kashmir with pellet guns. Human Rights Watch report is the evidence. UN report is the proof. What Modi did to Indian farmers for almost a year, even Nazi Germany did not do it to its people. Watch what happens to India a country that is 5000 years old civilization, governed and supported by idiots.

@@Jagan-lp8gu You are right, Pakistanis did pack RAW out of Afghanistan after USA. However, the bad energy sometimes takes a while to leave. But don't worry, Pakistanis will send all your men and trainees in body bags or if you don't own them, will bury them with the Indian flag.
