- The PlayStation 5 was revealed yesterday and after the console caused some controversy in its appearance, people online started to scale measurements according to the USB port to see how big the system is. Surprisingly it looks like the system is a bit bigger than we originally thought after seeing the reveal with it standing much taller than the Xbox Series X even.

The large fins all along it looks like it will help it disperse heat. If thats the intended purpose then kudos to Sony for using smart design for the console.

In 2017, I spent $150 CAN on game pass (during a sale), and it will last me until mid 2021 thanks to the $1 Ultimate upgrade.
I've done the math, and it has saved me around $2000 in the long run, on games alone... Not to mention, it has allowed me to try out games that I would not have purchased otherwise.
When my subscription finally does run out, gamepass ultimate will just cost me $100 per year (with its yearly sales) and includes:
1) Day one first party and some third party titles ($400+ CAN in value depending on # of day one releases that year)
2) Xbox Live + 4 free games a month ($60 CAN)
3) PC and console gamepass access
To put it into perspective, one new game costs $80 CAN... So the value of $100 for the year is really incredible....
If you are already paying $60 for Xbox Live, or plan to purchase one first party $80 game, might as well spend the extra $40 or $20, respectively, to get access to all those games for the year.
judging by the designs, the ps5 and series X seem to take cooling very serously. i feel like they're designed primarily to stand vertically

I think seeing this size comparison, it actually now explains the design language Sony went for. If they went for a similar industrial design that Microsoft went for but much bigger, Sony would get flack for such a bulky console. The curvy, futuristic look gives the general consumer the *impression* of a sleek and slim device and I think the idea was to offset the pure size of the PS5.

mark012498 Yeah, I personally think this shape is a lot smarter. Many more people would rather lay their console flat on a shelf instead of have it on the side of their TV in the limelight, so the wider shape of the Xbox wouldn’t work as well horizontally. Even so, the PS5 may need to be stood up, and it’s designed to be. If it does have to go upfront and centre with your TV, its designed to look futuristic and modern, so when someone walks into your house and sees it, they’ll go “Hey look, they have a PS5.” Plus, even stood up, it’ll be easier for the PS5 than the Series X to fit on a table/desk next to the TV - you’re not exactly going to be running out of ceiling before you run of out of desk width. The striking, new futuristic design will work well for a few years as the ‘fresh’ thing whilst everyone transitions, then Sony can change up the design with a PS5 Slim and Pro when the appeal wears off.
Same with the PS3. while back I compared it with the og Xbox one and was surprised that it was bigger.

This is unfortunate. Currently I have my PS4 Pro sitting vertically and there is about 2” of space above it in my entertainment console. I’ll have to reorganize things to get the PS5 to fit. The more and more I think about it, it may not be a bad idea to wait for the mid-gen refresh and see what options I have at that point. I don’t really play games as much as I used to anyway, so there is plenty of backlog to keep me company.

Nope. Not even close. The Switch docked is only 10" wide and 5 and 3 quarters high. The XBOX Series X 12.2" by 6.3".

How deep is it though? I know the series X looks like from the front that it's bigger overall, but how deep the system is from front to back seems to be something these size comparisons ignore.
Judging from the perspective when it was laying down its probably 2~3 times as deep as it is wide

They look to be about the same volume. Sony just opted for a tablet-shaped design while MS went perfect rectangle.
I have been wondering the same thing, and I'm curious why no one's been questioning how deep it is. If you look at the 3 quarter angle shot of the console, it's almost as deep as it is tall. Not exactly a square, but pretty damn close. There's nothing sleek about this thing. Just look at how thick it is compared to the original fat PS3 and the vanilla Xbox One. There's speculation that the PS5 stands 15 inches tall. If it's as deep as it is tall, this thing will dwarf the Xbox Series X - which is only 6 inches deep. Does anyone follow me?
I gotta say: I always prefer the original version of any Sony console, and this design is growing on me... I kinda want it in my living room just for the looks of it now.

There’s no way I could fit a PS5 in my entertainment center. The X1 barely fit horizontally in mine. The XSX is a thick boi but looks like it would fit. Either way, I would still probably place both next to my TV.

For both the XSX and PS5 the size is really giving you an idea of how much power is really in these consoles

I have a problem with the designs of both next-gen consoles. I don't have space to stand any consoles vertically around my TV. Unless I buy a completely new TV stand, I can only put consoles horizontally. Unfortunately, both consoles seems to have their exhaust vents on the top. This means that on a shelf, their exhaust vents will be venting directly into a solid wooden board support. I can't imagine that being good for airflow.
I'm curious as to where exactly you're supposed to be able put your additional storage.
It's gonna be an m.2 ssd so it's internal. Does one of the side panels just lift off or is there something on the ends?

It seems like you can still fit this on a shelf horizontally under the TV etc. because it is not thicker than PS4 Pro. In that sense, it is different than XBSX design and more traditional form factor from a practical perspective.

It's not the thickness that worries me it's the length. The length may take up the whole shelf without room on the ends to breathe.

I’m still getting the Digital Edition. This will go perfectly with the Black and White gaming set up I got. White Destiny Edition PS4, White Sony monitor, black X1X all on a white and black table. PS5 is 14ft tall.

If you look at the stands, you can see how they are shaped to accommodate the curvy side of the system for horizontal sitting. I wonder how or if it will lock into place.

Thanks for the graphic. Seeing the drive slot and USB colored red (for comparison/scale to other consoles) actually makes it looker even sharper. Maybe they should incorporate some color accents around those openings.

For me, as long as this thing kicks ass I don’t care what the size is. I’d rather them go big and bold and it pushed the boundaries of the current graphics that developers are able to give us. Personally, I’m a PC player primarily. But I do have a PlayStation for those games that are exclusive. I will be picking this up.
Andrew Bearden I only saw 2 or 3 games that looked next gen from that PS5 reveal. Honestly I wasn’t very impressed. R&C and Horizon 2 looked great. Everything else looks current gen or we didn’t see enough gameplay. While everyone was loosing their minds caught up in the hype, I sat wondering WTF?

Im waiting for the slim version, and getting a series X on launch. I have too many Xbox games in my backlog, and having them being backwards compatible with the new system is a god-send.

You left out the most important factor which is exclusive games. Why did the switch sell so well being the weakest hardware? I’ll make a list-Pokémon,Mario,legend of Zelda,smash bro’s,etc.

Lots of conversations about the prices on the two PS5s and what the price difference will turn out to be, but what would everybody think if both were the same price? In which case it would come down to whether you want to put your money into a disc drive or into expanded storage in the all digital version.
Itsthe same stand for vertical an horizontal position, its plain to see that the discless and regular console stand are different to acomodate the height difference the driver makes when layd flat

I really hope that isn't true. Based off the size, there should be plenty of volume for airflow and Mark Cerny did say they have thought alot about thermals. Plus, there was that rumour that Sony was putting more expensive fans compared to the ps4. I don't think any console maker will ever repeat the RRoD.
There is no f**king chance they designed the shell before the internals. Best case scenario it goes hand to hand.
I think the side to side image of all the consoles is a bit unfair cause of the flooded edges some appear taller than they really are...
2 questions
1. When it’s laid down does the disk drive go on the top or the bottom?
2. Is all the weight going to be put on the side of closest to the drive because if it lies down using the whole side, are the sticking out edges at the other side, the top when stood up, going to be bending and snapping with the pressure. When it’s said down in pics it’s on the stand and is also the digital version so it’s skinnier

I scaled this thing up in some software and it looks to be close to 16" with the stand (scaled based off the USB-C being .33"). Thats a monster.
There is nowhere the PS5 is fitting in entertainment center or even next to my tv. It may have to live behind my tv towards the side so I can access the disk drive.

I want to see the bottom side of the console where the disc drive is. If we notice we see different angles of the console but they dont show us that area up close or in detail & i think there is a reason for it. Possible in relation to backwards compatibility but idk i could be wrong. Ready for more info & preorders to open & prices.

I don't think so. I just think the render is off. Especially when you see the controller next to it. If it's actually that large, that means the PS5 controller would be fucking enormous. Like 5x bigger than the DualShock 4.
Last I checked on my x box one x , does not look like that and ps slim look? Maybe wrong photos ?
