I was literally almost at the end and thought “Man, I hope he gets to play 1000xResist so he can do a video on it” and Lo and Behold! Glad to see it on this list, and good on you for spreading news of it, haven’t seen enough people pick it up.
My biggest regret about Balatro isn’t gaining a crippling addiction, but waiting months for a weak-ass sale that only took $3 off of a $15 game worth a million
I wrote a little review for Balatro. The last line: "I guess what I'm trying to say is that this game feels like it deserves an entry on the SCP wiki as a cognitohazard. I can't get it out of my head. Highly recommended, run away while you still can." It's rare a game hooks me in that fast.

A cool thing about Unsighted is you can play the game without the timer which I totally did because it stressed me out. I might do a replay with the timer on next time since I have the timing down of the enemies.
I ended up learning about Balatro since a fellow creator, MBT Yugioh, ended up showing it off on stream when it came out and I fell in love with it. I've managed to beat every deck on gold stake and I'd like to eventually get every gold sticker (and with the new update today showing the stickers on the jokers as you grab them throughout your run, it'll be much easier).
I've been there many times... I will see what happens when I choose NO for the last level. (Didn't seen any video for that option...) I think the boss before that was way more fun!

Every time one of these video's comes out, I'm just like "okay, what game am I playing next?" Your recommendations are so good, some of the games you've talked about have genuinely become some of my all time favorite games ever. I can't even imagine never having played them, had I not seen them in your video's. Thank you for making these, please never stop, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please.
The way you described 1000X resist is almost exactly similar to how I’d describe my experience with a game I just recently played through called “Until Then”. I picked it up from the most recent steam sale and it hooked me in and never let me out. Highly recommend, one of my favorite games already
i love yakko's passion for indie games even when he is being critical of them his passion and love for them shines trough! that or his writing is just that good cant wait to see what this mad lad cooks up next!
For what it's worth, I love these videos. I think of myself as someone who has a finger on the pulse of great indie games. Whenever I watch your videos, I've heard, played or have been waiting to play at least 5 of the games on your list. Regardless, these videos always give me at least one game to add to my list or give me a reason to go back and give another look at ones that I didn't give enough attention. So, thank you for these. A great season finale and I eagerly await whatever you may have coming next.
My personal recommendation would be Biogun! An amazing metroidvania with charming characters about a doctor trying to save the life of his dog Penny from Pet-demic. Criminally underrated and deserves a lot more support imo.
Another game I'd highly recommend trying is Worldless, it came out last November and it honestly astounds me how little traction its garnered. It's a metroidvania with my all time favorite combat system, where you have to defeat opponents by absorbing them for new skills without accidentally killing them, and it plays like a mix between turn based combat and a fighting game. There's also a free demo that does a great job at introducing how in-depth the combat can get. It's also absolutely gorgeous aesthetically, with a minimalist art style where character designs are outlined with various points like a constellation, and their full form can only be briefly viewed when struck by an attack.
Thank you for not talking about the fact that you can turn off the timer in Unsighted. It isn't good and too many reviewers pretend like its a good option. So much of the game comes from the timer mechanic and it is by far the longest thing people talk about when they talk about the game. Even yourself said there isn't anything crazy to the game other than being solid without the timer mechanic. But a lot of reviewers see that option and look on their experience with the timer and recommend the game with the timer off despite never actually trying it. So good on you for being the one reviewer to actually not do that whether intentional or not
As a goof and a gag I could see something like Placid Plastic Duck Simulator making one of these lists. Sometimes 0 players is just the right amount. Also just as an update I still have not forgotten about Lethal League: Blaze, as per your request.
Lorelei and the laser eyes mentioned! I cant recomended it enough, its not only a very good puzzle game but also a mistery game that you are the one who is going to figure it out instead of the game just telling you what happened. If someone is scared about the things you have to know to resolve the puzzles, like the roman numbers or greek letters the game has documents that they explained to you how all of that works
The Balatro addiction is real. I was playing the other night, got up to piss eventually and realized it was 8-am. But you know I finished that run before I finally went to bed.
I'm happy that you played and enjoyed Void Stranger! Such an absolute gem of a game that flew under the radar of a lotta folks last year and I hope this helps give it more recognition that it rightfully deserves!
From being encouraged enough to buy and 100% the entire spark the electric jester trilogy, to seeing so many indie games I've loved or had a close eye on showing up with each and every one of these videos regardless of time inbetween. Take the break you've more than well-earned and deserve! I'll be just as excited to see what you come back with no matter how long it takes, it's just nice to get to be excited about these games alongside someone without feeling like it's coming right out of left field lmao I look forward to what the future has in store!
Ngl, I love "Voices of the Void" it's not rly. the normal horror-survival-game theme, it's strangely special, you really have to "experience" it yourself to understand it! But its one of my favorite games of all time and it's from one guy, I think!
Hey Yakko, I'm actually a bit of a nerd when it comes to 3D Platformers and know about the existence of some you may like, as you said in the Penny's Big Breakaway segment that there aren't that many. I will say though, I haven't played any of them yet because I've also been dabbling around with music production and analyzing many weird and groundbreaking soundtracks, so I can't tell you how good these are: - Orbo's Odyssey - Demon Turf - Blue Fire - Super Sammy Roll - Corn Kidz 64 - Cavern of Dreams - Super Kiwi 64 (just like Toree 3D, this game is tiny and extremely cheap) - Sephonie - Castle on the Coast - PsiloSybil (Crash Bandicoot style) And that's all I have, hope your music production endeavours go well :)
24:39 not only that but also the level design and game design is incredibly smart with the whole time mechanic, you already showed the spin jump that skips water, that is a secret tech for water movement, the ""intended"" way is to get ice grenades and later on ice shuriken to create ice platforms, but if you are skilled enough, you can get nearly everything blocked by water in the whole game with only the spinner, that is but one mechanic, you can also walljump, there are puzzles in the overworld that are like, push block then climb, that takes a lot of time, with the walljump you can just bypass that, the game gives you quite literally a fuck you button that you can press at will, any obstacle the game gives you, it also gives you 3 or more options to do it faster, exploration not only is rewarded with more meteor dust to keep people alive, but skill is rewarded by exploring faster and better and saving even more time; yet another example, the first dungeon intended order, you leave the dungeon, do A WALK that wastes a shit ton of time, just to get the shuriken and burn the roots to proceed through the dungeon, alternatively, you could also parry the anima monsters at the end of the prologue instead of losing to them, if you do so, you'll be rewarded with a flame sword, problem solved, you can skip right to the end of the dungeon no questions asked, if you lose that, you can also quickly get 3 meteor dusts and give to the weaponsmith in the initial town, his reward is a sword that has all 3 elements at the same time, including fire, so yet again, problem solved, you can also just go straight to the library for the second dungeon, get the spinner, and break the rocks blocking the wasted city, getting access to Rachel's Axe really soon, aka the best damaging weapon in the game, there is a LOT you can do, you can even get the final dungeon AT THE FUCKING PROLOGUE, and do the dungeons at inverted order, this game is just a lot, and I fucking love it
Over a year ago you recommended Omega Strikers to me, who I then recommended to a friend. While I stopped, he still plays Omega Strikers and it's awesome since I get to connect with him more whenever he sends me his highlights. Thank you for making videos. They really make my day.
The quality of this video is crazy and what a great write up on these games. I personally picked up a few and I’m looking to forward to playing. Great job!!
Seeing Void Stranger on this list was so hype, I was screaming with excitement. I love your videos man and I watch them for ideas of what to play next. Your reviews are so thoughtful and each video oozes with passion and creativity. I look forward to whatever you cook up next!
These indie game videos are some of my favorite videos to watch on youtube. You always do a spectacular job showcasing games i have never heard of but would love to play. Thank you for all the effort you put into your videos. Just know that whether it's a compilation of reviews or a single review or anything else you're interested in making, many of us will always be here, ready to watch It. Especially your game of music videos; those are awesome.
yakko, i gotta thank you. the moment u said that void stranger was an experience like outer wilds, i was interested immediately and have been playing it since you recommended it. the game really is like no other and i wish more ppl experience it. keep it up with these awesome vids and i cant wait for too see more content from you
1000xresist mention!!!!! I've been watching your videos for a while (found you on Backloggd, actually) and I just wanted to say I love everything you do. My favorite indie games are mostly obvious picks (library of ruina, pathologic, etc.) that you've played and this series has shone new light on a lot of games I would have otherwise missed, so thank you.
This the first of your video's I've seen and I think the highest compliment I'm able to pay you is the fact that at least two or three times during this video, I paused it to check my audio because I was wondering why NitroRad was sounding different than I remember. The energy and perspective you bring to your reviews is exaclty the thing I hope to experience from these types of videos. Keep up the great work, I'm gonna go check out more of your stuff.
As always thank you for the recommendations I always play all of them and I'm surprised I knew at least one you told us in this video, keep up the good work my man!
I know you might not see this, but yakko 1 of the reasons why I pursued music production was because of your video on Hades. It made me want to become a composer for video games, so thank you.
This is one of my favorite youtube series and I appreciate the Penny's big breakaway section since I also have things to criticize from my favorite games
Please play In Stars and Time! I know it's pretty unrelated but I got reminded by Void Stranger. I think you would really enjoy it, it's a time loop rpg with one of the best characters I've ever seen
god video games are fucking awesome, sincerely thank you for all the videos and recommendations, they always rekindle my love of games as an art form, and i NEED to fucking play lorelei and the big catch NOW
Man I love this series and I found out about so many nice games through it since we have similar taste. Shame to see it go or slow down. Thanks for the hard work you've put on it through the years!
Man I love these videos. It always opens up my eyes to the games that slip through the cracks of what's usually AAA slop nowadays. I can't wait to try some of these!! Thanks yakko for the great reviews :)
YESSSS Balatro its such a banger. I love these videos you make with indie recommendations, ive never been disappointed with a game i saw on here. Stuff like sayonara wild hearts, pseudoregalia, the void rains upon her heart, picayune dreams...
Awesome video. Coincidentally, I have been waiting for a Lorelei sale and it just happened yesterday so I'm digging into that this week. I was so stoked to see it be your final recommendation, but then the surprise pivot happened to be to - my personal GOTY! Your taste is IMPECCABLE.
What you said about Balatro is so accurate. It's always the "just one more round couldn't hurt". I bought a steam deck primarily to be able to play Balatro on the go.
I think you have officially become one of my go-to youtubers for indie recommendations. I have walked away from every single one of these vids wishlisting at least one of the titles presented without fail. (This time it's Lorelai if you were curious)
I bought Penny's Big Breakaway immediately after watching this video and gotta say it's a really amazing game! I definitely did feel some of the grievances you mentioned but once things clicked the movement was soooooooo satisfying, thanks so much for recommending it!
I’m incredibly happy to know I was at least aware of each of the games on the list this time! I haven’t played them all yet, but I feel validated to know someone else found these games and thinks they’re awesome too! I absolutely loved the secret last game, it was such an amazing experience
Whatever come n3xt video wise its probably going to b3 fantastic. Your videos are some of the only ones ill watch over and over then make my friends watch with me over and over. You only make bangers that make me wish i had more time and money for games
You should play Roboquest man, crazy cool movement shooter rogue like. Love your content and I'd love to see your take on the game. It's got little comic gun sound effect noises like "bang", and "brrrr" next to your gun when you shoot. Need I say more?
I just know that TBC: Tacklebox is gonna be a killer for speedrunning. I can already see the optimization in my head. All I can do is hope that it gets enough people behind it to have some truly legendary players run it
yo, play these, they good. - What Remains of Edith Finch - Dandara - Potion Craft - The Witness - Sable - A Short Hike - Hylics / Hylics 2 - Papers Please - The Hex - Noita - To The Moon If you have already played/recommended some, just ignore it. (HOW TF IS THIS VIDEO 57 MINUTES LONG???? IT SEEMED LIKE 20 MINUTES)
eee love when this internet man gives me more games to play! Thank you internet man! For pointing me towards new fun (and enjoyably sad) video game times! phew happy to hear you're thinking of changing formats because I was worried about the wait between "22 indies games you need to play or else"
i was always a fan of your channel and wonderful indie recommendations, and boy am I glad to learn of the last game (no way I would have heard of it otherwise). just decided to hop on the patreon train! love your work man (and the crazy Elden Ring stuff with pineapple)
I've had Zeroranger in my library for a while know, and seeing you gush so much about Voidstranger made me finally pick it up again so that I can finish it and then play Voidstranger.
I recently got Psuedoregalia and Laika: Aged through blood. I have to thank you for suggesting them. I never would have found them other wise. Thanks so much!
Check out Death Road to Canada, it's a really unique take on both the rougelike and survival genre. It also makes you care way too much about randomly generated characters.
I have wish listed half the games on this list now, thanks again for the recommendations! I picked up The Void Rains Upon Her Heart after you talked about it in one of these videos and it is so fantastic. Hopefully I'll get to try these at some point too
My aunt knows the guys who created Simogo and playtested for them. The coolest thing was that my brother was able to playtest sayonara wild hearts. It is a surreal feeling to see my favourite TH-camr talk about and praising their games.
Awesome selection of games! :D The Big Catch especially looks pretty promising and I'm looking forward to trying out the Tacklebox demo of the game! Also, I appreciated you not delving too deeply into Void Stranger, I'm actually in the middle of playing the game myself and almost skipped the section, but listening through it was nice as it added to how cool the game's been so far and reassured to me that I can approach those sorts of games as shared experiences with friends when it comes to figuring out puzzles together and whatnot!

its peak
"3D platformers are rare especially in the indie space"
HE DOESN'T KNOOOOW! HE DOESN'T KNOOOOOOOOOW!!!
You should really try
Demon Turf
This has become one of my favorite series on TH-cam. I added all these games to my all of my wish lists
29:30 - Okay but wtf is happening here?
I was caught very off guard
This moment made me buy the game
I'm happy that you played and enjoyed Void Stranger! Such an absolute gem of a game that flew under the radar of a lotta folks last year and I hope this helps give it more recognition that it rightfully deserves!
ok i tried them now please let my family out of your basement
Yes they did. It was ALL wrong.
From being encouraged enough to buy and 100% the entire spark the electric jester trilogy, to seeing so many indie games I've loved or had a close eye on showing up with each and every one of these videos regardless of time inbetween. Take the break you've more than well-earned and deserve! I'll be just as excited to see what you come back with no matter how long it takes, it's just nice to get to be excited about these games alongside someone without feeling like it's coming right out of left field lmao
I look forward to what the future has in store!
I will say though, I haven't played any of them yet because I've also been dabbling around with music production and analyzing many weird and groundbreaking soundtracks, so I can't tell you how good these are:
- Orbo's Odyssey
- Demon Turf
- Blue Fire
- Super Sammy Roll
- Corn Kidz 64
- Cavern of Dreams
- Super Kiwi 64 (just like Toree 3D, this game is tiny and extremely cheap)
- Sephonie
- Castle on the Coast
- PsiloSybil (Crash Bandicoot style)
And that's all I have, hope your music production endeavours go well :)
24:39 not only that but also the level design and game design is incredibly smart with the whole time mechanic, you already showed the spin jump that skips water, that is a secret tech for water movement, the ""intended"" way is to get ice grenades and later on ice shuriken to create ice platforms, but if you are skilled enough, you can get nearly everything blocked by water in the whole game with only the spinner, that is but one mechanic, you can also walljump, there are puzzles in the overworld that are like, push block then climb, that takes a lot of time, with the walljump you can just bypass that, the game gives you quite literally a fuck you button that you can press at will, any obstacle the game gives you, it also gives you 3 or more options to do it faster, exploration not only is rewarded with more meteor dust to keep people alive, but skill is rewarded by exploring faster and better and saving even more time; yet another example, the first dungeon intended order, you leave the dungeon, do A WALK that wastes a shit ton of time, just to get the shuriken and burn the roots to proceed through the dungeon, alternatively, you could also parry the anima monsters at the end of the prologue instead of losing to them, if you do so, you'll be rewarded with a flame sword, problem solved, you can skip right to the end of the dungeon no questions asked, if you lose that, you can also quickly get 3 meteor dusts and give to the weaponsmith in the initial town, his reward is a sword that has all 3 elements at the same time, including fire, so yet again, problem solved, you can also just go straight to the library for the second dungeon, get the spinner, and break the rocks blocking the wasted city, getting access to Rachel's Axe really soon, aka the best damaging weapon in the game, there is a LOT you can do, you can even get the final dungeon AT THE FUCKING PROLOGUE, and do the dungeons at inverted order, this game is just a lot, and I fucking love it
RABBIT AND STEEL MENTIONED LETS GO......
ONE RABBITILLION COPIES SOLD......
Over a year ago you recommended Omega Strikers to me, who I then recommended to a friend. While I stopped, he still plays Omega Strikers and it's awesome since I get to connect with him more whenever he sends me his highlights. Thank you for making videos. They really make my day.
I’m sooo glad you covered The Big Catch: Tacklebox! It’s easily one of the best demos i’ve ever played and i am very excited for the full release.
Especially your game of music videos; those are awesome.
yakko, i gotta thank you. the moment u said that void stranger was an experience like outer wilds, i was interested immediately and have been playing it since you recommended it. the game really is like no other and i wish more ppl experience it. keep it up with these awesome vids and i cant wait for too see more content from you
YES. LORELEI AND THE LASER EYES, BEST INDIE GAME IVE PLAYED ALL YEAR
1000xresist mention!!!!!
Keep up the great work, I'm gonna go check out more of your stuff.
i've been playing rabbit and steel for a while now, and im so glad you're talking about it, actually one of the best games to play with a friend
1000xresist is genuinely a narrative and thematic masterclass. So glad you got to cover it! Great vid, as usual!!
This is one of my favorite youtube series and I appreciate the Penny's big breakaway section since I also have things to criticize from my favorite games
I'm so happy you finally covered Unsighted. I love that game so much.
Thank you for showing The Big Catch. I fell in love with that demo.
Please play In Stars and Time! I know it's pretty unrelated but I got reminded by Void Stranger. I think you would really enjoy it, it's a time loop rpg with one of the best characters I've ever seen
Damn Yakko, your content creation keeps getting better and better, congrats
So glad to see love for The Big Catch it’s definitely the best platformer I’ve played in forever and I can’t wait for it’s release!
Thanks for the Rabbit and Steel rec, bought it right away when I saw it had local multiplayer too. Really looking forward to trying this with friends.
god video games are fucking awesome, sincerely thank you for all the videos and recommendations, they always rekindle my love of games as an art form, and i NEED to fucking play lorelei and the big catch NOW
Man I love this series and I found out about so many nice games through it since we have similar taste.
I recognized every game on this list, I feel so proud
Also now you need to play "In Stars and Time" Amazing visual novel that is best done blind!
I definitely did feel some of the grievances you mentioned but once things clicked the movement was soooooooo satisfying, thanks so much for recommending it!
balatro is amazing, i'm already 100h in, I can't stop playing it
Love these videos. Your reviews have made me play through so many bangers I would’ve otherwise skipped.
Thanks man.
Great timing for Balatro since in the indie direct it got a ton of collab DLC.
I’m incredibly happy to know I was at least aware of each of the games on the list this time! I haven’t played them all yet, but I feel validated to know someone else found these games and thinks they’re awesome too! I absolutely loved the secret last game, it was such an amazing experience
Throughout the whole video I was like "should I recommend The Big Catch: Tacklebox to him?". Good thing I waited XD
Whatever come n3xt video wise its probably going to b3 fantastic. Your videos are some of the only ones ill watch over and over then make my friends watch with me over and over. You only make bangers that make me wish i had more time and money for games
I always enjoy your vids and I think that you're one of the best video game content creators on youtube!
- What Remains of Edith Finch
- Dandara
- Potion Craft
- The Witness
- Sable
- A Short Hike
- Hylics / Hylics 2
- Papers Please
- The Hex
- Noita
- To The Moon
If you have already played/recommended some, just ignore it.
(HOW TF IS THIS VIDEO 57 MINUTES LONG???? IT SEEMED LIKE 20 MINUTES)
HELL YEAH, THE HEX MENTIONED!!! I absolutely love the storytelling in that game, good recommendation!
The Looker is another good title to add, pairing it with The Witness
Dandara is great if you like metroidvanias that are very difficult. It rocks and the soundtrack also rocks
@@shoveirubr8255 any of you played any Project Moon games? Try Library of Ruina.
@@fablor9900 LMAOO YES
BIG CATCH TACKLEBOX MENTIONED, WE MAKING IT OUTTA THE DESERT WITH THIS ONE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you so much for the recommendation Yakko. Just finished playing 1000xResist because of this video. Well worth every single cent I spent.
eee love when this internet man gives me more games to play! Thank you internet man! For pointing me towards new fun (and enjoyably sad) video game times!
phew happy to hear you're thinking of changing formats because I was worried about the wait between "22 indies games you need to play or else"
Just found you and your efforts here will forever sure benefit indie game devs through me :)
Possibly the best non spoiler Void Stranger review I have seen so far, nice job.
i was always a fan of your channel and wonderful indie recommendations, and boy am I glad to learn of the last game (no way I would have heard of it otherwise). just decided to hop on the patreon train! love your work man (and the crazy Elden Ring stuff with pineapple)
AYYY RABBIT AND STEEL!
Been playing that since Skooch made that video on it and you were in the group playing it!
