    Yeah, definitely get that power sorted. Should be able to source a cable and connectors to make something up. Just got to get the size and polarity right for the new plugs and happy days. I’ve done similar to charge up my cochlear batteries whilst camping with just 12v. Works a treat.

      Yes. I’m just hoping that starlink will find a better solution for powering the dish since it’s marketed as a portable device but needs an AC outlet to power.

    In Martinique you can get digicell that works all around Caribbean for 35 euro per month .... 150 GB if it's not unlimited by now .
    You can also use a Martinique address and probably get the regional roam from France which is 59 euro per month .
    Also a nice review to add is how it performs under sail with priority data on and some swell !

    Your innovative use of Starlink Mini on a sailboat is truly impressive. Your ability to integrate cutting-edge technology into your sailing adventures reflects a wonderful blend of modern convenience and nautical passion. And I am Floating Village Life.

    Mbps is megabits per second, not megabytes per second; 1 byte = 8 bits. Megabytes is denoted by MBps (capital "B"). 167 Mbps download rivals land based internet download speed; by design, 16.1 Mbps upload speed is less than half the speed of land based internet. You can buy or make a 12V Starlink Mini power cable. Star Mount Systems has a power cable direct to the cigarette lighter port
    BTW, love your boat & your channel & your attempt at a simple life which is the way it was when I was cruising in the Dark Ages before computers, cell phones, GPS, internet, LED lights, solar charging, etc. Catamarans were few & far between but I think I remember seeing a Wharram. When I first saw yours, I knew it was a Wharram.

      I figured out the bit v. Bytes after making the video. I saw star mounts cabling but that cable doesn’t have the weather proof port for the dish side

    "Hi! I'm from Argentina, and this year we finally have Starlink. However, the Starlink Mini isn't available in the market yet. I was thinking of buying it anyway in the States. Since it works in Martinique, I thought it should work in Argentina too. Do I need to use a USA credit card to buy the mobile regional plan? I'm asking because maybe it wouldn't work at home just because my bank account isn't from the USA. I don't know what would stop it from working. Cheers.

      @ZigZagSailing_113  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you are in the states buying they can’t stop you what so ever, it’s a good idea! Definitely be cautious because once you connect, the Starlink router does use your location. What we did to avoid being cancelled by Starlink (in Grenada where we currently are) we are using a VPN which is a way to change your location when using the internet 🛜

    Does it work underway on the ocean away from shore?

    • @ZigZagSailing_113
      @ZigZagSailing_113  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It does work offshore but you’d be charged per gig used. Rather than having the unlimited. I am actually not sure if the mobile regional plan allows you to use in motion or not.

      @@roberts8783wondering the same, so many boat video review, and not a single one covers underway experience. Whoever finally does one, would probably get thousands of views. Otherwise, this is just another review regardless if “on boat”

      @NRYT2360 I bought one. It works just fine underway in 1.5 meter seas on a catamaran slamming the bridge deck in 5 second period waves at 8 knots. quite low packet loss and 100mbit

      It can be challenging finding the right tech in Martinique, if you find one that ships here, Send me a link to a 12v cable that has the waterproof connector like the one that comes with the dish

      Thats definitely interesting. They say their plug is weather proof but it doesn’t have the same flanges that the star link cable has. I’d be looking for something waterproof

      @@ZigZagSailing_113 I guess you can also try a local electronic repair shop, ask them to make a custom cable for you. They can cut out the original Starlink plug that you already have and use it on the new cable.

    So the website says the Starlink plans are for 'on land' The boat packages are really expensive. Does the starlink know if you are cruising offshore and using it? I heard some boaters had their service rates inflated once Starlink found out they were using the service out in the middle of the sea. Not sure why it would cost more if you are on water rather than land other than they think all boaters are rich so they gouge us accordingly.

    • @ZigZagSailing_113
      @ZigZagSailing_113  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I’m not sure. Island hopping might be okay because of the overlapping perimeter of each island.

    Internet speeds are measured in bits, not bytes. A byte is a group of 8 bits.

    I get it. The internet connection quality and convenience, and the added safety aspect, but I'll be dammed if I was ever going to give Elon Musk a dime let alone commit to a monthly recurring service fee. I hate him. And I didn't think it was possible but given his activities over the past two/three weeks, I hate him even more. I respect you for doing what you need to do, I just couldn't do it for me.
    I had the Jackery 500 with the 2 yr warranty. 2yrs and 3 wks later the BMS failed and their customer service wouldn't help me get it fixed. Well, they finally would at a cost of more than buying new. Provided the equalivent of a $0.50 off Shake-N-Bake coupon to buy a whole new replacement. I just bought an Anker 1000 during Amazon Prime 3 weeks ago. Not sure if the experience will be any better but this one has a 5yr warranty.
    Thanks for your videos.

      Alex and I have differing opinions on musk but I was indifferent when it came to getting internet access. I see exactly what you mean these company’s give you warranty right before things go to shit. Technology tents to fail when exposed to marine conditions so we are hoping our tech pulls through but only time will tell. Our Bose speaker is the only thing that has broken in the past 8 months we have been on the boat. (Knock on wood) When it can to paying an equivalent fee for international service plan on phones and data with island services. It seemed like this was the right choice.

      Actually, it works off satellites so it should be available anywhere on the ocean, unlike cell phones where are you have to be within reach of a cell phone tower on land.
