Cheers for that! Yeah; the boat is a mid winter plan… makes no sense but that’s all we can do! We’ve done loads of design and prep work in the background and will get some videos out on that as soon a the van is done, of which I think we’re only planning 2 or 3 videos about and that’s all fitting marine gear for testing. We are heading down to the boat after Xmas and new year to film and then make a start! Really can’t wait now!
14:39 Any penetration of a boat hull is a vector of water ingress. To integrate furniture into an inner hull shape or to glue anchors unto hulls without eroding them is a useful technology. Also boats come with gimbal stoves, but never with traditional 'gimbal bunks', the hammock - as if boats never roll or keel, possibly triggering motion sickness... the glued anchors can refit that design without second thoughts.
Sone great points there! I’ve have toyed with the idea of a gimballed Bec for our build but I am not sure it’s worth the hassle, the weight and the loss of overall space. Still though, a simple trial could be an interesting video for us!
@@SailHub "a gimballed Bed" The water bed, insider the river bed. That's what I thought of a double sized hammock (even with a bug net and under kilt) which can be taken down and stuffed in a moment. I also fantasize about filling vanilla inner hulls of pocket cruisers (guess, the 'salon') with knee high warm water like a tub or flotation tank... Ya.

Tried to develop silicone anti foul in the late 80s and it worked a treat in some environments and in others the silicone became a route for bugs to grow into the coating..
That’s super interesting. What in earth could live in silicone ay! So when you a route into the coating. What coating are you referring too? I would love to know the company name? What happened to the research? I believe silicones have changed over the last ten years or so or at least there are new areas being explored, what re your thoughts on these new derivatives? Do you think they could work.
@ I believe the silicones came from a company named Bramite (couldn’t tell you where they originated maybe US) or perhaps that was the silicone brand. We were a gelcoat manufacturer and had some success putting it into gelcoat they already had a two component urethane I believe. We ran some trials around Auckland and had success with the urethane but in a particular river we found that the growth grew into the silicone coating and it looked like it was growing in the long polymer holes of silicone. I.e. soft silicone in hard coating allowed the growth to follow and push the silicone out of the way. Same in a gelcoat. I had some fun and built an opti with the coating that was slippery AF. Also coated my caravan roof with it and despite being in a wet area where algae used to grow quickly we were able to wash it off no problem time after time. Other key issue was repainting and sanding the silicone coating…. Silicone in paint shops is death and nothing likes to stick to a cured coating and getting rid of the dust was death to any other coatings for a long time. I was keen to try it in tooling gels but not my boss lol… Also played with copper clad in the early days I think you guys had it in the UK through Scott Bader who were our early polyester technology partners.
Company names… we were Stratos Chemicals, became Ferro Stratos in NZ when bought by US ferro. Then they bailed NZ market and Nuplex bought us who eventually purchased the global resin business of Akzo before being gobbled by what is now Alnex. This research was done by a couple of kiwis who are no longer with them and long retired… too many economists accountants in the business now to get real research done, lol in my opinion!

Sure, that’s likely nylon. It’s swells slightly in water, it is common for domestic water to utilise hdpe too. Both materials are great and they are cheap too but they are not suitable for marine usage at all. The Tru Designs are made from a fire proof material similar to delrin, This gives a bunch of other benefits and one being that they don’t seize.
Love the Karver clutch. We were looking at the Ronstan constrictor clutches for our halyards. These might be better as so much shorter. The Ropeye monster loop is basically what we have done for our DIY chainplates and our mizzen stood up to Storm Bert in North Wales :-) All it cost us was the offcuts of the dyneema shrouds and a bit of time.
@@SailHubLatest update is that our Mizzen is still up after Storm Darragh. A neighbour recorded 84 knots. No issues with our diy dyneema chainplates 😁
That rophub thing may stick in your northern climate but down here in Northern Aus I don't rate it to last more than a couple of months. 35 to 47 degrees C with crazy high levels of UV will kill it in no time and if the anti foul boys need to leave a yacht painted with their fancy stuff in Gove (Nhulumboy) for a month or three to see how it survives. This is where I found marine life eating in to my Hydrovane rudder so good luck with that. Bring that stuff down here for testing to see how long it lasts.
Criekey Nige, sorry to pop a bee in your bonnet chap! Yeah, we have some pretty horrendous marine life up here too, and the main issue here is the cold and moisture regarding getting things to stick, but then… epoxy, I’ve not really had an issue with it in extreme heat. UV, yeah mate, that’s the bugger. But then these things are super cheap to replace, I their best seller is less than €10 Anyhow, that’s the plan for the channel mate, put the sales pitch to the test so you don’t have too! Let’s see how it works out ay 👍⛵️
@NortyNige sure, we use the manfrotto ones all the time, mind you… they don’t like the seawater, the base corpses like mad and then the pump fails. Still, it’s to be expected but I know what we are going to replace them with 😉👍
Well done Chris very slick presentation, unfortunately though I have to report the Peller clean you showed at the start is even more slick than you and not in a good way... It all slipped off within a month on our Max prop! I followed the instructions to the letter but it all peeled. I usually use Velox which easily lasts 2 years and then just needs a top coat for another 2.

@ the silicone fell off the tie coat so I don’t think it was my prep. I generally like Seajet stuff, Seajet 33 has worked really well as an antifoul for us. I was hoping you guys would make it to Annapolis this year, guess you’ve got your hands full in Scotland. We’re actually looking forward to getting out of the heat of the tropics, I know you probably won’t want to hear that!

They are all good but for us the Mustang gear is the best and the guys are well into innovating between seasons which is rare and brilliant. Not sure that’s the wise way of cooking on an electric boat. Although that does depends on your battery bank, it’s size, chemistry, your motor, required range etc etc Of course it can be done but there are constraints. Happy to get into it over on Patron with you if you want to go deeper into the possibilities 👍
Yeah mate, I think the silicone may be the answer?! The problem with Teflon it’s a killer for the environment and the cost is insane for such an area. The silicone has some amazing reviews so we’re going to put it to the test when we launch the boat and see what the score really is!
@@SailHub Just as an outside runner cover a prop with a 25mm permanent marker pen just keep painting / drawing on to the prop with it and see how it lasts in comparison. Some say it can last as well as Prop speed. Never tried it myself but have seen others doing it so who knows. Could be a funny segment in a future video.
Ok, that’s interesting! Personally I don’t paint my prop. I polish it, a quick acid wipe one every couple of months should see her nice and clean. The beauty of a boat that dries out ay… But, yeah. That sounds mad so I may well try it! Thanks. The reasons we are looking at the seajet anyifowl is that they have re engineered it as a full antifowl, but there was no demo to hand for me to use in the video. Should be a good test for sure 🤞
@SailHub perfect example for me. I'm doing an elevator bed using a lippert kit but sailing has done winches and pulleys for decades I'd rather use to lift my bed to the ceiling as they A look cooler and 2 are proven to work. I am honestly right now looking into those Carver clutches.

@@SailHub Dynamical positioning is a system that has been around since the 1960`s in the oil industry, basiclly making it possible to hovering a ship in the same position. i agree with you about the simple winch hand locks. IMHOP the best invention was the floating winch handle--they never seem to fall overboard.

Ooo, just a plain suction base that I can bolt a Garmin base to or any attachment of my choosing would be wonderful.

Those suction bases have been around in the film / television industry for probably 30+ years or more now. Just another use for a well proven product.

PS I applied it 3 years ago in Turkey (so it was possibly old stock as well) maybe they’ve improved it?

Do this for items you see there good for campers. Most things I find that are good for campers come from the Marine world or European caravan culture

Hey up, when you say dynamical positioning, do you mean a virtual anchor or a gyro? Check out Bluenav fella. They’ve just gone live with their gps anchoring made possible by a 360° spinning motor.

@@SailHub Dynamical positioning is a system that has been around since the 1960`s in the oil industry, basiclly making it possible to hovering a ship in the same position. So yeah, the boat. We’ve had huge progress, mainly in paper but nan that’s such a faff!
It’s super busy here at the moment which is cool. We’ve got 2 sailing videos reviewing some sailing gear, two on the van and then we’re on the road to the boat!

For sure! We all do it to go sailing, many loose track of that! I guess it depends on what your building and why? Mind you, I’m not likely to replace something with old tech any more.
