No Auto-Pilot & No Compass! 1,000nm on our Wharram Catamaran [Ep.14]
มุมมอง 5Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Finally Sailing again! No fancy auto pilot or a compass because we accidentally broke both. Auto decided to not turn on after months of sun exposure and the compass cracked while removing out cockpit table…oops. We are feeling great because this was Katies first 1,000nm and she doesn’t hate sailing. Wahoo!!!! This first day back we sail North from St. George Grenada to Canoun in the Grenadines....
Big Changes!! Wharram Tiki 30 [Ep. 13]
มุมมอง 2K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Over the past week we’ve been slowly replacing our beam lashings one by one. Not becasue they are worn out or broken, but becasue we have decided to go with a different type of rope. A rope that is 1/2 as flexible as our previous lashings. This new rope is actually what the building plans specify. At first, Alex decided to use 3-strand polyester, without looking at the specifications, rather th...

มุมมอง 2.3K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is the last leg of our voyage until November and leaves us reminiscing on just how much the past 3 months have challenged us. Can’t believe we got hit by another boat. Alex just kept saying that could have been the nail in our coffin- BUT we are happy to report no damage beyond cosmetic. We definitely want to hear from YOU. What content do you want to see? For example, Technical tour and T...

Merry Christmas
Consider googling or searching TH-cam for Sheet to tiller steering. You can use a rope and a block and let your sails do the steering.
Love to build 30f
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
@ I am sure that you will enjoy it more 🙂
love your videos, liked and subscribed ! are you using a 360 cam ? quality is very good
Thank you so much! We are using a GoPro with the newest version of the Max lense! We debated on the 360 but really love the gopro brand and quality!
Lovely videos guys! I had a question regarding the spaciousness of the Tiki 30 cabins, especially in the tropics. Do you two sleep next to each other inside one of the hulls or does each of you sleep in their own hull?
Thank you! So at first we both (Humans) were sleeping in the same hull- laying in the same direction and it was TIGHT. We are both around the same weight and height 5’6 and we squeezed. HOwever, we switched to laying in the yin yang shape and it was better. With or dogs sleeping in the “Bow bed”. THEN, after 2 months we decided that the humans should sleep in their own hulls, after one of us had gas hahahah
Sugar cane has a lot to answer for... even if it does make some pretty fine Rum these days .🥴
Agreed!!
Another cool video. Thanks
You bet ☺️☀️
Dig your boat.
Thank You!
3:55 Your draft is not 5 ft, it's 2 ft.-1 in. I love how your dogs are so chill about sailing.
Or as we say in a more advanced country, @rocketscientist007...63.5 centimeters....draft. Never mind you'll catchup to the rest of the world. Possibly.!!
Yeah katie doesn’t know the specs as well as I do 😂
Great work, great boat, great attitude, cheers from Australia, Regards Brett
Tiki 30 is an awesome design, you’ve done a great job on the build, cheers from Australia Regards Brett
she was definitely a labor of love, Thanks Brett
Great video, you should be proud of your boat and the common since solutions. Simplicity rules
We agree! Thank you so much!
What a beautiful boat,,,well done!😍😍
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for the tour, helps to get a picture of the available space inside the hulls. Beautifully done, I love all the paintings!
You are so welcome! 🙏 we are glad to help give a good idea- we feel that painting white on the inside helped it feel bigger too!
Enjoy your story this is so beautiful 🇦🇺🦅
I just love this boat and the name
Thank you:)
Great video. Curacao is your best option for hurricane season 2025.
I’ve thought about going from St. John to curaçao it’s only like 400 miles
Yes, great episode. No wind vane possible?
We bought the wind vane plans from Wharram design but have to build it back in St. John because we have all the tools there
Hi folks. Just calling in from Nz. Can you give me an e.t.a for down here. My beer fridge is full again, and I'm sorting out a red carpet. Oh yes. Anyone who owns and sails a Wharram, down here, deserves the Royal treatment. The only problem for you is quarantine for the dogs..? That won't take long. Anyway, great episode. And great editing. Take care. Cheers.
Ahh you are the best, we know we will be over there from Feb. 8th to the 23rd. It sucks we wont be there with our beloved boat. Just flying (the boring way) hopefully one day we will have a bigger Wharram and make the journey the fun way. We are going to get the itinerary in December and will let you know when we are in your neck of the woods ASAP!
Get yourself a hand held military type compass that you can shoot a bearing from. JIC. ..even if your phone has a compass or nav app.
Currently coming up with a new mounting for our original compass. We took the table out so we had to find something else to mount it to
...sails up!!
Thanks, always!
I LIKE YOUR BOAT! Well done Safaring Dreams. Minimalist but WELL thought out, organized, structurally wonderful and PRETTY! You two are the Yabba Dabba Dooo of sailors. SUBSCRIBED AND LIKED! Go places and do things. I'm with ya!
OMG YOU ROCK, thanks for the love! 4 years of thinking went into it!!! Cheers
They are not so bad. I'm more terrified of speed boats. Why do they go out of their way to come next to boats under sail?
Agreed, speed boats also stress out our dogs and give our small boat violet wakes. The shipping container vessels are find near shore but at night in open water is when they stress me out. They stress Katie out all the time no matter what, haha
Congrats on your success and thank you for sharing with us. I'm considering building a Tiki 30 myself in Mexico. I'm trying to get a sense of the person hours required as Wharram's estimate of 900 hours seems to be quite low. Do you have any sense of the hours it took you? Thank you
Honestly I never kept track over the 4 years, but I took breaks to vacation and do deliverys… I single handed most of the build and consistently worked on it 5/7 days of the week. Hope that helps! It’s worth it!
How many hours on the motor?
A lot! I’m not sure specifically. But the issue wasn’t that big of a deal. Just something came unbolted
You guys are awesome and what a beautiful boat its is exceptional. Its so nice to see a young couple like you work together with such charming personalities, its very entertaining.
Thanks so much! 🫶
Hope you two are ok
Wish i could like this twice !
awesome. good choices
Thanks!
Beam lashing details are the opposite of boring lol
We agree Blake 👏
Ya know I'm sure two clever minds could work out how to make a small custom made fold away table if need be.
Honestly we prefer the wide open cockpit. And we have good ideas for integrating the live edge slabs as shelves inside the hull. Nothing with be wasted.
Dyneema rope won't stretch at all.
Actually the lashing do need a certain degree of stretch. I guess you can think of it like the springs and shock absorbers on a car.
Thats a really good how to, for tensioning the beam lashings on a wharram. Dogs be like mom why you remove all our added fur and fug it takes ages to get it that good 😂 Hope Mark Wildings watching he also needs to tension his dynema Rigging beam and deck lashings 👍🏼 Do you think you would ever go for a larger Wharram.. as a repair or build 🧙🏼♂️🇬🇧 If you use a wax like candle wax of beeswax in and on those squeeky points it will reduce the noise through rubbing..as well as keep the water and termites out. In the UK The RN used to grow Hornbeam for high load blocks and structural parts . Epping forest is famous for its Hornbeam stands.. Elm was used for water immersed parts.
We actually saw the video of him doing the lashing. I thought it was loose when I saw that. We would certainly want a bigger wharram but that takes time. I have this crazy idea of building a 63!
@WildlingSailing
@@ZigZagSailing_113 Ambitious yes and quite costly but an Islander 55 or 60 or Pahi is a floating island 🏝️😉👍🏼
Hey, that was cool. I can’t imagine the hard work involved. Thanks for showing us all!
Thank you, definitely hard work indeed! We appreciate you watching!
Well done, nicely thought out space use, enjoy your sailing.
Thank you!
Yup
Yep 😘 I’m ready to be lazy
Hi! Met you in the taxi going to the airport Saturday…I have news for you!
Beautiful boat beautiful people, thank you.
Thank you so much 🫶🫶🫶
Great video! Thanks for sharing. Love wharrams in general but yours is gorgeous. Quick question, what is the size of the outboard motor you're using?
It is a 9.9 Tohastu! Which comes stock with a propeller for a dinghy. We’ve had this for more than six months and now have decided to get the biggest propeller we can fit on there. Which is a 10x7 four blade and we will see how that goes
Internet speeds are measured in bits, not bytes. A byte is a group of 8 bits.
Thanks
Well done!
Thank you so much 🙏
So, you could do that with 150k at 5% each. What about the capital cost of the boat?
Not sure what you mean
@@ZigZagSailing_113 I mean that a capital lump sum of 150k at an interest rate of 5% per annum produces half the annual income (IE per person) to meet your expenses, but then you also need to buy the boat, so how much do you need in capital to buy the boat? (GBP not USD)
@@paulsteventon8315 we built our boat, we are only factoring in what came out of our saving account for the month of August not the start up. But we do not have insurance or mooring fees or marina fees, what we spend on boat maintenance isn’t ALWAYS in the $400 range but it was in August
@@ZigZagSailing_113 wow, that it skilful. I also watch sv Delos, who are building an aluminium catamaran in Australia. I was trying to work out the overall costs. Thanks for sharing your adventures with me xxx
I would think free seafood would be your main meal with great variety.😊
We have a lobster snare and free diving gear but no success… YET
I want an episode from the puppy dogs POV ❤
So. It can be done with less; but, yall are living your best life. Looks fabulous to me… dogs and all
Can be done for less. But we have to pick and choose which stores we go to. Some are so much more expensive than others.
How do you blow through $600 worth of groceries in a month with 2 people? Especially with $155 spent on eating out
Grocery costs depend on location. Can be double or triple the cost sometimes. It's annoying, but it's the reality, and if their transportation cost is $0, they're limited to areas fairly close to where they're moored. Ports of call tend to inflate groceries also.
Well here in Grenada the cost at the stores varies wildly. We figured out that we went to the most expensive store on accident.
Dog food $80 😬
We got 2 dogs, so if we had only 1 it would probably be half of that, and we opted to choose a high quality brand
