This is the first video I've seen that shows how the factory service manual (FSM) wants the timing to be set, though the FSM is a bit confusing because in that section on timing belt change, it also says to never turn the engine counterclockwise. I did exactly as you did when I changed my timing belt/water pump/crankshaft and camshaft gears and cam cover seals 3 years ago. When trying to remove the exhaust cam pulley, we ended up rotating that camshaft 180 degrees (using an impact; don't do this!). Having the timing set to 30 degrees BTDC likely prevented bent valve stems and a possible valve job. The position of the camshaft relative to the VVTi gear is tricky though since the camshaft will move some (even when held down with a 1 1/4 wrench inside). Before putting the TB on, I advanced the intake cam about 5-10 degrees clockwise and then turned the intake pulley counter-clockwise until the dot timing mark lined up with the mark on the timing cover. Unfortunately, I also didn't change the VVTi pulley (or do the seal replacement), and now it's leaking. At 3 years in, I'll probably need to redo the TB job to replace the VVTi pulley because of oil getting on the TB. In any event, thanks for an excellent video with great descriptions of the process.
I know a lot of people that do it using the lines just out of ignorance. Hell I used to do it too cause that's how I was taught but reading through the fsm opened my eyes to this method and I'm glad it did! So much safer! I did the same thing, did all the seals and timing belt not knowing it was the gear leaking just to have to do it all again lol thanks for watching! 🤘🏼
My is300 looks like shit on the outside but has never had an oil leak or any other issue. It is super reliable and now I’m working on building it for power. I’m gonna be doing a na/t build
Hey man I was drifting my is and it started making this rattling noise it vibrates above the vvti cover any idea what it could bev??? I’m hoping that it’s the vvti gear it was leaking already before
It's definitely possible that it could be the vvti gear, although rattling is normally from low oil supply to the gear in my experience but I suppose if its leaking enough it could also do that. I'd check the filter for the vvti feed at the same time if I were you.
Okay so someone please tell me what the two little vent ports that come off of both sides of that cover that look like vacuum line outputs and why do they leak oil and is they're supposed to be a hose there or are those supposed to be just open
Those are there on all 2jz's but they were only used on certain ones (i believe it's gte specific). There shouldn't be oil coming out of them that's likely a sign of cam seals leaking. It is really just a vacuum crossover tube from one side of the engine to the other. Vvti ge engines never used that line so the tube should just be open on both sides. 🤘🏼
@@RotaryDaddy yep I'm familiar with the cam seals and such this car was supposed to have had them done recently but I just gotta put the rubber nipples on them very much appreciated brother
Im gonna save this video because i plan on doing mine this summer since i dont know when it was replaced it doesnt leak but with summer coming up i can't have no leaks, and this video is very very helpful im new to timing but my dad will be happy to see this so the job can be easier
Dang never seen anyone else saying to line up the timing with the dots to the lines, usually everyone else says to line the lines to the lines and the dots are toward 15 degrees. I learned something today 😆
Hey bro! Is it okay that the cam gear has a little play when timing belt is off? Play being left to rig turning a bit. I just put I new one in and not sure if this is good.
Yup! It should be able to move pretty freely for a few degrees thats the variable valve timing at work. Just make sure the key is in the key way and I like to turn the gear all the way to the clockwise position so the dot or line (whichever you're using, in my case the dot) lines up with the notches on the back cover. Make sure to look up writeups if you arent sure tho!
As long as you make sure to time it right and turn it over by hand two rotations before you try to start it you'll be fine. Just make sure to look up diagrams and do your research on the timing. With the method I show in this video you are pretty much never going to hit anything. Just take it slow🤘🏽
I replaced the cam gear o-ring without removing it from the car, much simpler.. but I knew the cam seals had just been done. A little tricky to get the cam gear back together before the seal fell off.. but possible.
I’m doing timing belt and vvti gear O ring but my vvti gear has about 15 degrees play on both sides past the backplate timing mark, doesn’t stop at the timing mark as yours 10:18 What should I do Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
literally just commented about how mine was leaking lmao this wouldve saved me soo much time if this was in my recommendations sooner i literally ordered the whole front face to my engine cuz i expected the worst but it was just the vvti pulley but the videos really help

If it’s too late my first advice will be buy a good harmonic balancer, that is key to great performance

Lines will work, dots are safer 😎 just make sure you match them up to the right marks on the crank 🤘🏼

Crank pulley and exhaust pulley are lined up, it’s just the vvti gear that has that play.
Did u use the same lock tool for crankshaft ?
