      Scheduling self care as a mom…… I’ve got 4 kids, one of whom is a breastfed baby and I definitely have to make specific time for self care.

Most women of my generation are familiar with your ideas, but it often seems we've lost the basic discipline and desire required to run our lives effectively and joyfully.       I too am an older viewer and wish to echo your sentiments! I can hardly believe that years ago, I was working a full-time job, returned to college to complete my undergrad degree and had a color-coordinated calendar for my then-husband so he could get our daughter to all of her appts and activities but that calendar also let him know times I would be available to answer any questions during the day! Now retired, and having gotten past a challenging health issue, I’m a bit lost on how to schedule or block time! This was a timely reminder for me!!

      I retired in September, 2019 and found myself trying to organize my days in a completely differnt way-and it was more difficult than I anticipated. After watching Jennifer’s channel for a while (along with several others) I purchased a planner for the first time in my life in March of 2021. It’s helped so much to keep some of my life structured as if I am still working. It also helps me avoid the ‘time suck’ of social media & the Iphone. When I see those 3 things to do daily, and the 2-3 other items on that list, it makes me feel I accomplished something that day. I do check them off as they’re done. I don’t obsess over not getting them completed, just add to another less busy day. Caregiving for my 92 y/o mother, homemaking, and gardening a bit have become my new ‘career’ for this period in my life, and time blocking & planning my days prevent the dreaded retirement ‘drift’ that occurs for so many in our age group.

    I especially appreciate your tip on, “supreme focus” and “smooth transition” because I find that all the careful planning in the world can go out the window without the discipline to actually focus when the time comes. Those insights around your mindset are really helpful.

    Hi Jennifer, just want you to know that you are touching hearts all around the world. As a student at Juilliard, I wrote my schedule as you modeled in the video, and I find it easier to smoothly transition to the next thing. I love the importance of remembering not to get sucked in by social media. My sister and I are both students here, and have enjoyed watching these all for the last couple of years. You are incredible! You inspire me to do what’s most important: connecting with your best self, and remembering that home is the central place in our lives.     As a working artist, I am managing a lot of different areas of life. So I write down the major jobs for the week and for the day. Each day I ask God to give me the day and schedule, then try to use intuition, which always aligns with common sense. Thank you for all you do, Jennifer. You’re an inspiration.

    When I first watched this video, I wasn't sure if this method would really work for me. But after trying this consistently for the past three months, I can honestly say it truly is the best! I'm a woman in her 50's and have struggled to find a way of getting things done without being over-whelmed, too rigid, etc. For as long as I can remember, I've had a daily to-do list, but could never get it all done. This kept me stressed out and feeling like a failure. Time Blocking, however, helped me to quickly see what I could realistically get done in a day, and what I couldn't. I especially love how you incorporate personal time for yourself. I've made sure to do the same, and I feel like I've been able to strike the perfect balance between productivity and time for myself. Thank you, Jennifer! You have been such a blessing to me. I would love to see future videos where you show your day in action using Time Blocking.

    As a procrastinator I find tasks take much longer than I think they do. Adhd sufferers also experience this. It’s called time blindness

      I thought about this more. The tasks I do regularly (and dred. Like dishes) take less time than I anticipated usually. However, tasks that aren’t regular that I’m dreading and keep putting off Do actually take longer (like cleaning for guests or packing for a trip)

    I needed this today! I moved from one house to the other and my productivity has gone off a cliff. Yesterday I deleted the Instagram app because I realized how much time I was wasting with just scrolling. I’ve used time blocking before, but I don’t usually add self care items.     I recently made an outline of a daily schedule similar to this.I have an hour block in the morning where I can do housekeeping tasks, and one in the afternoon that includes pampering, reading, hobbies, or finishing up the tasks I didn’t get done in the morning. I also have a big block between 7-9 pm that just says “free time” so I don’t always feel so regimented. I haven’t gotten into this habit yet, but I’m working on it!

    I have a one year old with one nap each day. I time block around wake windows and sleep, and make lists for each block of time. It’s worked really well so far!

    I needed this video, Jennifer! We moved houses and then immediately jumped into our first year of homeschooling (4 kids from 9th to 1st grade) and my housework and just all around balance have suffered. I'm also pregnant 😅. I need to dust off my planner and get organized. I know myself and all my family will feel the difference.

      I was wondering the same thing! I love this concept, but I homeschool. While homeschooling doesn’t take all day, my children are HOME all day.

    Cool! I’ve been time blocking for years! I love it Bc I can spend some time on my hobbies as well as work, and I find that I tend to my highly procrastinated duties better when I have a set amount of time for it. Which means that I won’t be trapped forever! 😊 Also, I learned from daughter in law that unloading the dishwasher takes about 4 minutes, the exact time it takes for French press coffee to be ready!

    The more I listened to your time blocking, the more I realised that it was something that my dear late mother did daily. She never wrote anything down, it was all there in her head.
    I also do task lists and like yourself, it’s super as you tick off each task done. A friend of mine told me that she does the same and if she completes her list; she writes underneath it the words Ta Da 😊, yes complete with a smiley; she tells me that it really lifts her mood and gives a great feeling of satisfaction for a day that’s gone well.

    Your point about not over-scheduling is so important! I had to switch from doing daily and weekly planner pages, to only monthly, just to force myself to prioritize better and limit my to-do’s. After this change, I wound up being more productive - and had more free time, too! In my one-on-one time with my oldest daughter, we are reading Ourselves, by Charlotte Mason. In last week’s reading, Mason made the point that we need to develop the habit of differentiating between what we *must* do from what we *may* do. A lightbulb went off that this is what minimizing my to-do list, down to the top priorities, helped me with! We could easily fill every minute of the day with stuff to do. But one thing no one ever plans for is life’s interruptions! When only scheduling the main things, there is room left for flexibility, which helps us handle the inevitable interruptions with grace and peace, rather than frustration and irritability. 💛 Thank you for sharing these tips! (And the floral arrangement on your dining table is gorgeous!)

    Not exactly sure how to ask this, but what are your children doing when you have tea time? With Dad, a Nanny, etc?? I’d love to do this, but as a Mother of 3 children, not quite sure how to?!?!

      I think they know they’re not to interrupt her. However, two of her girls are older now, it’s just the younger boys that I imagine would be the frequent interrupters

    As a full time homemaker I really need to implement time blocking. I wouldn't say I'm failing, but maybe struggling a little to be as productive as possible to keep order in our home. I am going to try this starting tomorrow. Oh, and you can bet tea time is getting scheduled. 😁

    This was a great reminder for me of my own Time Blocking routine. Now that I am retired, I have found that my day sometimes gets away from me and I feel like it has been wasted. Lately, I have divided the day into two hour blocks and I assign tasks to those blocks that need doing that day. I use a small notebook. My housework routine in based on zones, so the zone for the day is added to the morning block, along with a writing task. Right now I am working on a personal history where the topics are pulled from a Journal Jar. Some tasks are daily and are done the same time every day. After my morning reading time (done just after I wake up), I get dressed, lightly clean my bathroom (swish and swipe) and make my bed. Then, breakfast. Then the time blocking tasks begin. I include time to watch an episode of whatever TV series I am watching; I only watch one series at a time and usually include one episode morning and one in the afternoon. I will remind myself to call/text a friend. I usually have a sewing project or other creative project going and that is blocked in. I am the car pool driver for my grandson in the PM, so that is blocked in. I am usually reading several books at a time, so I will block in when to read. Meal prep/batch cooking (for 2-4 days) is blocked in during the late AM before lunch. Grocery shopping may go in this block if necessary. Laundry day is Thursday and I use the timer on my phone to remind me that loads are done. Yes, this interrupts other tasks, but because there are only two of us, it generally fits in a two hour block with something that doesn't require much focus and I can easily go back to. I have been tweaking this time blocking for a few weeks and it is getting better and better and now at the end of the day I feel I have accomplished a lot. Thanks for the tips in this video that will allow me to make my system even better!

      It sounds like you live such a lovely life! I love the way you plan it all out, get your work done, and find time for hobbies and enjoying relaxing activities. There’s just something about watching an episode of a show in the morning that is so luxurious. I love it.

    Thank you for saying that a book can be written with only one hour a day. I'm at 100k words but now need to refine and finish it, which I'm struggling to do as I have a full-time job that leaves me exhausted at the end of every day. I definitely need to time block!

    Hi Jennifer! I’m very please to hear that it’s important for newmums to have time for themselves: I’m a mum of 1 year old baby (a demanding one) and I struggle to do the things I need to do around the house and all my errands (work and personal related), that, obviusly, I’m left with zero time for myself or zero energy and I always wonder when I will have time for me ALONE. I cutted to the bone the time to prepare myself in the moorning and this doesn’t make me feel good. I know and I continuesly say to myself that this is a season of life, that I should take as it is and enjoy the little joyful moments, but it’s hard because I don’t feel myself in this moment. I desire some time for me and this make me feel selfish. I hope someonelse can feel related to this.

    I have an old school iPod for such days that I need supreme focus. I hear my favorite music without any distractions. Time blocking has saved my sanity and has given me a routine. I've been doing it loosely for a few years now and it blends great with my split shift work schedule. I break my home tasks daily, weekly, and monthly. My morning block routine is exercise, work, errands, and daily tasks. I have an office/down block where I read, pray, schedule, make calls, and take a break for an hour. I'll also schedule appointments and time with friends in this block. My afternoon is weekly/monthly tasks and then going back to work. When I get home I have my evening block when it's dinner, family and dishes. I basically split my day in four blocks and it works for me and my family.

    Thanks so much for the inspiration, Jennifer. I will try to apply some of your tips to my life (esp turning off social media) and I already do some of them. Henry Ford time blocked too. I have time blocked for many years after reading how Henry Ford got so much done -and I applied his techniques to my job and life at home. Someone asked me how I got so much done at work and I told them it was because of Henry Ford's time blocking. Years ago, I took a time management course. The biggest thing I learned from it was to "handle it once". It works esp. pertaining to laundry. It used to take me five minutes to unload the dishwasher and put it all away. Since I gotten older it takes me seven minutes. I love to time myself doing chores. Seven to eight minutes to change our sheets and remake the bed. I do not know why, but since I have gotten older (60+) I have slowed down no matter how hard I try - like in slow motion! Any of you other folks notice that in yourselves since becoming older? On the other hand, I can get ready to go somewhere alot faster than I used to.

    Dear Jennifer, I have been planning forever to finally comment on your channel. Love your videos sooo much, they are my favorite part of the day. I have been living a very similar lifestyle for years and was so glad to find your channel and how passionately you galk about it. Your stories about living in France are so interesting - I have had a similar experience during my high school years only vica versa - I am from Prague and spent one year in the US. What you describe in Madame Chic is a quite common lifestyle of European homemakers....

    I like how you do this Jennifer. I had a segment of time management in college and they wanted us to plan out every minute of the day. I got a lot done, but felt so stressed. Blocking,like you have done is much better. I tend to make lists to check off. I will try blocking them.

    I loved this video. I am a person that has thrived on calendars and lists since 6th grade. In the 90’s I loved Franklin Day Planners and time management seminars. Time is our greatest resource and learning how to manage it vs waste it is the key to success!

    I've been attempting this for the past few months, but I keep trying to schedule every minute of the day and then become discouraged when it takes me longer to finish things than I want. Today I've scheduled fewer tasks and have not accounted for every minute...let's see what happens.

    Thank you for sharing some really practical tips for getting motivated and staying productive. I work outside of the home full time and try to use these strategies at work to the best of my ability, but your thoughts in transitioning are SO great. When I do transition from task to task or try to finish my work for the day to head home, I often feel like I didn't do "enough ". It can honesty ruin my perception of my work but I am going to work in "accepting" that I have done enough for that task and gratefully move on until I come back to that task the next day. ❤

    Love this! I tend to make very long todo lists and always get a lot of unimportant tasks done but don't seem to get to the tasks that will move me forward in life. I am going to try the time blocking! I will definitely try to make it balanced with work/career tasks, homemaking and self care.

    I like to write down the tasks I need to get to that day on a whiteboard in my kitchen. The kids and I have a great time making them off together. When we finish then we all get to go play together.

    Jennifer, that is such valuable information you gave us in that video! And to me, it came literally on the day that I had decided to sit down and create this schedule I have been thinking about for a long time! You just gave me the tools to do it! Writing is one of my projects, and I also thought that in order to do it seriously, I had to write for several hours a day, which I could never do. But one hour a day, that is realistic! The other tips you gave that I know I already struggle with are to get to it, and to transition from it. I let myself get distracted so easily, I excel at putting off the things I don’t like to do, but when I do commit, I’m so focused on my task that I find it hard to let go and move on to something else. I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart because your video will be a great help and a great motivator to me! Have a blessed day! 🌸💕😄

    Beautiful video editing with this one and you look lovely in the white sweater, Jennifer.
    The big block here is homeschooling from 10-2. Everything else happens easily enough if we make sure that big rock is our big block.
    My tea time is usually a nap. It recharges me for the second half of a long day.

    As a professional writer, I can also confirm the fact that writing commonly happens in pieces of time, not usually in the framework of the standard 9-5 working day. Some writers can write for 7 or 8 hours a day, but most of us cannot. If you read about many of the great writers of the early 20th century (Hemmingway springs to mind) - they would write for 3 or so hours in the morning and then do whatever else in the afternoon. I find I can only write for a maximum of 2-3 hours at a time. More commonly, I'll spend an hour to an hour and a half at a time. When I find I'm in the "zone" (something that's unpredictable and a kind of creative gift) I may go longer. I remember hearing about a poet, a busy working mother, who found 15 minutes a day to write - and it worked.

    I have found difficult transitions are easier when I walk around the block. My mind is cleared to move on to the next item in my day. I have recently wanted to add a short daily self care when I lay on the bed to elevate my feet and read.

    So funny that you mentioned the dishwasher! I always put that task off. I would even hand wash for days to avoid it. Lol then one day I timed myself and it took two and a half minutes and it changed the way I thought about the task. Now I do that task first thing in the morning and just get it over with first and it’s better.

    Love, love this video! Right up my alley! I do a combo that really works for me after a lot of trial and error. I use ToDoist, a digital planner, for my main to-do list as I have many recurring tasks set up for personal and work that I need to keep track of (accounting deadlines that can't be missed etc) and it makes it easier not to drop a ball. I then print out my google calendar by the week and hand write my time blocking on the google calendar print out every morning. I love that you mentioned being realistic about how long tasks take and time blocking personal time. Those are both 2 weaknesses of mine that I need to really work on.

      Is todoist free? I recently heard about miro from another TH-camr but haven’t looked into it too much. I have daily recurring tasks that I like to keep on top of. I feel like instead of spending time daily rewriting them I need to find a way to have those ready to go and insert non daily tasks as needed

      @@21972012145525 , yes there is a free versioon of todoist. You can pay for additional features, but the free version has many good features. And, yes, I have many many recurring tasks set up that way...from renewing our passports every 10 years, to changing filters in the furnace, to renewing insurance policies annually, etc.

    Are you still home schooling? How do you manage all this with the children around, what are they doing while you do all these tasks? I have much of the same tasks as you do, but sometimes I find it hard to find productive things for my children to do, the little ones can just play and they do that well, but the older ones who can't be totally independent on projects like cooking, sewing building etc. and are too old to just play all day.. I find this especially with my 10 year old son, his needs and play are very different from his 8 and 6 year old sisters who can get on painting and playing together for hours, I also have a 4 year old daughter and 2 year old son.
