    Being a homemaker is like being a flight attendant on a plane that never lands. Breaks are essential.

    My husband always has breaks for tea. His English grandmother called it “A civilized moment”. Sitting down for a cup of tea in a gorgeous antique cup is my treat. I take frequent breaks between chores throughout the day.

    Domesticity is my strong suit but it isn’t for many other ladies. I will share my best advice: do a small task every day. When my children were small I learned to do one task and consider it an accomplishment. Little people do require so much attention. Now that I am a wiser woman I continue to practice the same skill set. Perhaps cooking the dinner mid day. Perhaps doing a clean bathroom sweep briefly. I do a small load of laundry most days. I grocery shop with a list once a week so that I am well-stocked and rotate my pantry. As I’ve met women of all ages some like these domestic tasks some abhor them. Ladies, enjoy each season of your life span. Find joy in the mundane.

    Lots of little nuggets of gold! I love the quote about perfection. And a wonderful observation about our routine becoming “boring” was intriguing. I never considered that being a reason as to why a once perfectly functioning routine suddenly goes flat! 🎉Yay! Great food for thought. Thanks Jennifer!

    I’ve heard that unplugging and then plugging an electronic device back in is called a “soft reset.” I hadn’t thought of that working for people too! 🔌 🕯️

    Thank you Jennifer. I am sending this to my husband who is a Type A individual. Hoping he watches it. Although this was geared towards women, he shares the characteristics. He believes if he just gets up earlier, or works harder, his life will be perfect, everything done. I fear he is missing out on enjoying the journey. He is a successful provider, a good father, yet I do not see him as happy. He is hard on himself, and it affects his family.

    Your comments about experimenting with recipes even if you don’t have all of the ingredients rang so true for me!! I have to follow a very strict diet and cannot eat any gluten or dairy, plus I limit seed oils and sugar. People ask me where I find recipes that taste good because many GF things are yuck, and I always encourage people to just take their favorite recipes and make substitutes for the ingredients you cannot have. It works (most of the time)! 😀 My favorite is banana bread - I can make it so many different ways for just about anybody while using my favorite recipe. Once, I made it free from gluten, dairy, sugar, nuts, soy, egg… and it was still delicious!

    Too much rigid work and routine (even at home) puts you on a masculine mode. Not the vibe I want to give to my family all day, every day. So, taking breaks, softness, exploring new things, breaking habits and cultivating creativity makes me feel like a more rounded woman 💋

    Thanks for this; it is just the right amount of advice. When I retired in 2020, I had to look at my routines and adjust in many ways. It took me some time to realize I did not have to do all the things I used to do on Saturday! I figured out when was the best time for me to do things I used to do in the evenings or on Saturdays because I was working and put them in the most convenient places during the day and week. I was time-blocking and didn't know it. It was so freeing! I hope that younger women will be able to implement your advice and find what works for them much sooner than I did! Great content, as always. Oh, I am still not good at delegating, but now that I have more time, I don't feel the burnout I did before. My husband, who has always been responsible for "outside the house" has delegated brilliantly by hiring two services to care for our yard! So worth it!

    So pertinent to me right now, & I’m sure others. I am making myself take a break to get some sun for 20 minutes each day & take the dog for a walk. Also, I am stopping housework at 9pm doing some Bible reading & hanging out with my older teens. It is very hard for me to do nothing, some parts of my life are passing me by.

    I have a large capacity washer and dryer. Now retired, I have to make myself wait for a full load of each kind of laundry because of our water bill going higher. I had a ridged view of wanting empty dirty clothes hampers. When leaving for a vacation, I drive myself nuts not wanting to leave a thing in there. I must change.

    This video really hit home. Something that has given me extra motivation to let go and delegate even if the job might not get done “right” is my recent awareness that not delegating is actually bad parenting! At its core the whole entire role of a parent is to prepare your child to leave the nest. Not letting our kids practice developing life skills because we want the job done efficiently and perfectly sends them a constant message that we do not believe they are capable. They can’t do it right. Leaving the home without the knowledge and the experience to believe they can handle things is the recipe for a life filled with anxiety and depression. Two conditions that are plaguing society. Jennifer your advice in this video is extremely valuable and very timely for me and I’m sure many others. ❤

      Good for you! I speak with so many adults who’s reason for not being able to do a task or do it well is simply because “my parents didn’t teach me” or “my parents never let me do that or help with that.”

  • @violetstarla
    @violetstarla ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Really needed this today love the quote, "Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you." I'm also a hyper productive person and find it hard to rest until everything is finished but nothing is ever really supposed to be perfect and unplugging really helps you to see vividly your progress and feel a greater appreciation for what really matters in the day.

    Hi Jennifer! What an interesting and original subject you cover in this video! It is so helpful! I especially liked the quotes you included because they were not only very relevant but also profound. Oh, the power of words!
    I can say that I have fallen into ALL the negative homemaking traps you have mentioned, but the worst for me would be perfectionism! I had to laugh because recently, I remember thinking that homemaking was to me like the Greek myth of a man always pushing a boulder up a mountain, but I didn’t know the name of that man, and when I heard you mention it, I was relieved! And I was so happy to see that I was not alone thinking that way! With this video, you gave me hope, and useful tools, to see homemaking in a different light! Thank you!

    I tried having a daily to do or chore list many, many years ago. for me; I found it to be negative; usually falling short of what was on the list. I was usually busy as a Mom and homemaker every day doing several things; but maybe it wasn't the items on the list. The chore or to do list didn't last long; The important things always seemed to get done without one.

    I would add another one - giving more importance to the tasks and not to the living creatures. Sometimes I want to clean the kitchen or the like and my dog wants a hug or invites me to play, and I think : « She has a shorter lifespan than me, stop your endless tasks and enjoy her precious company ». Idem with my husband or my baby.
