Tea Time with Toph is a TH-cam series starring the voice actor of the original Toph Beifong herself, Michaela Jill Murphy! Follow along with all new episodes as Michaela rewatches and reacts to Avatar: The Last Airbender, all leading up to the new live-action series releasing on Netflix! Excited for what's to come, and thrilled to have all you Twinkle-Toes along for the ride!
Michaela Jill Murphy is an American voice, film, and stage actress. She is known as the voice of Toph Beifong in the animated Nickelodeon television series "Avatar: The Last Airbender". Michaela's voice has been featured in several animated movies, including Meet the Robinsons, Over the Hedge, The Ant Bully, Finding Nemo, The Emperor's New School, and Brother Bear 2. - บันเทิง
9:44 Michaela's face when Karalynn mentions the movie 😂
The low key shade she throws at that movie is just great.
Lol no you're not going crazy, they accidentally did keep Toph's soles, you're fittingly the first reactor I've seen to notice that! When this episode was released, it was meant to be the show's Halloween special (in the UK it was released on October 25, 2007, November 9 in the US), and they definitely....went there with this one! I love the setup for bloodbending. It’s ironic that waterbending, one of the gentler bending arts, created the most frightening bending. Tress MacNeille did such a great job as Hama! Imagining Gertie from Hey Arnold, Dot from Animaniacs, or Daisy Duck as a bloodbender is...quite surreal. Then again, Gertie probably wishes she could bloodbend!
Hama's name comes from the Greek word aima, meaning "blood"! When Katara blocks the big attack, Hama is shocked because that’s not a water bending technique. Water bending is about redirecting and turning your opponents energy back on them. What Katara does is an earthbending move! Just another time where they show that when you combine the four elements, combine multiple views, you get something even greater than the sum of its parts.
16:56 One of my favorite things when new reactors get into this series is when, without fail, they’ll start to theorize about bloodbending after The Swamp when we learn that waterbenders can control plants, but then they stop themselves because “this is a kid’s show” and they couldn’t go that dark on Nickelodeon.
"You've outnumbered yourselves."
One of the coolest and scariest lines from Hama. 😱❤
I never noticed that they accidentally kept the soles on Toph’s shoes! I’m shocked Mike and Bryan didn’t catch that when they made sure Toph never made eye contact with anyone.
Michaela actually sounds like azula here and there..
i actually get that a lot! haha
Ah yes, the famous "I thought they were ocean kumquats" is by far the most iconic Toph quote 😆
This episode is wonderfully creepy and well written, but another reason it hits so hard for me is how tragic it is. For so long, Katara was the last waterbender of her tribe, who has had to fight and work so hard for the right to continue her tradition. and when she finally meets Hama, and is not alone for a moment, it all turns sour so quick. On top of that, Hama’s imprisonment is a harrowing story. it’s tragic to see both these characters lose their chance at a unique connection, with Katara’s mentorship taking a horrible turn and Hama becoming a prisoner again in the end...really underlines the horror for me
I really do feel for Hama. It's a pretty classic "Person is hurt by someone/some organization and seeks revenge, but targets people who are connected to, but aren't really responsible for, the actions of that person/organization in the first place" plot, which can feel dumb at times, but the way they showed Hama's backstory, her trauma and deteriorating mental state, really sold it. She's in the wrong, but you can still sympathize with her
glad to see Karalynn Dunton "voice of the minions" on Tea time with Toph
Created by Dan Povenmire
Ahh, the legendary tress macnelle as Hama. i can't lie i envy you. To be able to work with the most accomplished voice actress of all time at such a young age must've beer huge
One of the greatest voice artists of all time, in my opinion. I'd put her right up there with some of the all time greats like Mel Blanc.
@jbearclowater that's not an opinion she is literally according to IMDB, the most successful voice actress in history. So your opinion is actually a fact lol
Tress MacNeille Have Voice 100 Character Tress Have did 103 Movies and Show She is 72.
@@jonathanleonisI've had the good fortune of meeting her.
I would love for you to keep doing videos after this series.
Its so relaxing to listen to you, and you have such a great aura and personality, your happiness is contagious 😍😍
thank you sooo much! 💚
@@michaelamostly I'd be disappointed if you didn't do Legend of Korra. But take care of yourself of course : )
Toph didn't metal bend the prisoners out because they're in enemy territory and supposed to be keeping a low profile. It's easier to get away with her bending the space bracelet into a key than a full metal bending display.
I feel like a part of it could also be that her metalbending is still rough and unrefined, so she may not have felt confident that she could bend the cuffs without hurting the prisoners.
My favorite episode in the entire show!! Completely blew me away!
Ah yes the scariest episode in the entire show
Hama is, in my opinion, the second scariest thing in the show after Koh, but agreed, this episode is insanely dark.
By a country mile the scariest episode. I think Hama is the scariest because Koh was created a monster, and Hama chose to become one.
This episode legit terrified me as a kid, Koh is horrifying to but what makes this episode more spooky is the overall vibe and tone they took with it.
my little cousin found the next one scary lel. might have been the flashy cuts during Aang's last nightmare before deciding to stay awake
Indeed!
i have always thought of toph using the key so the villagers wouldn´t find out that she is an earthbender and metalbender
I love this episode, because like you guys said, it shows our lovely girl’s huge story and how far she’s come since she started. Also, seeing as I’m blind I had no idea that Toph’s shoes had the feet in them, she did rip them out so yeah that was an error lol. But I love that it was you Michaela who pointed it out for me!!!
Bloodbending was the creepiest thing in the Avatar universe right next to Zaheer killing the Earth Queen by airbending the oxygen out of her lungs.
I wouldn’t say the Zaheer killing was creepy, at least in my opinion, if anything I found it more shocking and just at a lot for words.
I would put the episode where we see Ko the Face Stealer in that category. Which I believe is one of the last four episodes of the entire series. I’d consider the atmosphere and background more scary and creepy feeling. Granted this is all based off memory and I’m watching these as a refresher.
THIS!!!!!
Wasn't that oxygen thing something that happened in the avatar Korra show?
@@Viper3220 Yes! Season 3
You know, it never occured to me until he killed the Earth Queen like that, that maybe that's how Gyatso killed all those fire nation soldiers in the Southern Air Temple and that's why they find his skeleton with them?
10:58 Sokka’s reaction defending Yue always gets me 😂
Karalyn really has the best quips and really good comedic timing. She's awesome! And so is Michaela of course!
Hama having the same VA as Arnold’s crazy grandma on Hey Arnold just fits
Tress MacNeille has done a lot of voice work including Dot from Animaniacs and several roles on the Simpsons and Futurama.
the key is the bit of 'space earth' that Sokka gave you. You wear it as an arm bangle when not using it
Good episode. I think this was meant to be a Halloween special, because it’s creepy. Bloodbending is a super cool concept and I kind of wished they utilized it more. (I know it comes back in Korra, but that’s something else entirely) But this is still a very cool episode, if not terrifying.
Yeah, they scaled up the creepy and abusive nature of bloodbending in Legend of Korra. So bad that, at the end of season 1, Amon and his brother couldn't live with themselves and chose to kill each other via murder-suicide over rebuilding their lives.
agreed!
@@alexiaNBCAmon didn’t care… his brother killed them, he had remorse… not Amon
@@alexiaNBCdid you even watch it?
I absolutely love this episode, not only one of the darkest but also possibly the scariest episode in the series. Bloodbending is truly the darkest form of Waterbending, especially given how rare the technique is and the movements of Bloodbending. Hama was the perfect antagonist of this episode especially with how she starts off sweet and innocent only to reveal more of her self and as the episode goes on revealing she was the one whose been making people disappear in the woods under the full moon taking them prisoner while also learning of her tragedy. Perhaps one of the scariest things about this episode is the end with Hama congratulating Katara stating she is now a Bloodbender laughing off into the night, even though Team Avatar was able to stop her at the end of the day Hama succeeded in her goal of making Katara use Bloodbending.
Tress MacNeille very creepy in this episode as the titular "Puppetmaster"
Yes, Dot Warner as Hama!
Toph is my favorite character out of everyone in the show
I've had the same thoughts about Sokka/Suki/Yue situation. But I guess it makes sense that because Yue was pretty much Sokka's "first love" or his first (serious) crush he's ever had, you never forget those feelings and they will stay with you even when you start to fall in love with other people later in your life. I think many of us can relate to that, even though later on when we grow up we just laugh about our first crushes, but I still remember the moment I had those mysterious, "more-than-friendship" kind of feelings for someone for the first time.
"Thats why she looks so old!"
Fun Fact: Hama is actually only 28 years old.
Man this episode scared me as a kid
Omg I was drinking that same pumpkin spice tea from Trader Joe’s while watching it’s actually so good
holy heck its Karalynn Dunton, i somehow recognized u instantly even though i think iv only seen u in dan povenmires tiktoks
Lmao you two are just all vibes in this episode ❤
PISCES MOON QUEENS!!! I’m a Gemini sun, Pisces moon and Aries rising. I cry a lot, stop/start quick, and it’s very passionate until I forget what it’s about.
It's a continuity error, but to be fair it was the sole error
HA
Eye color is definitely not something I picked up on the first few watch throughs. Like how Toph’s shoes aren’t broken anymore. There’s usually something new I catch on each watch through, whether it’s a gaff like that, or a new symbolism. Part of what makes the show amazing. Good eye
I love watching these videos. They make my day so much better
im soo glad! thanks for being here! 💚
This episode really gave me the chills in the best way possible, plus getting Tress as a guest was beyond perfect!!! ✌✌✌
I just love this series so much!
This episode always reminds me when I was younger, my friends and I did some ATLA personality quizes, and everyone got specific characters and I got "Bloodbending"
What does is mean? WHAT DOES IT MEAN??
I don’t think that Sokka necessarily loves Yue more. I think he gets emotional whenever she is mentioned because he feels like he failed her. Later when he learns that Suki was captured by Azuka, he becomes emotional and demands answers even to the team’s detriment. Then when he and Suki reunite and escape, their relationship fully forms. Suki is the one he actually helped, and Yue is the one he tried and failed.
I'm binging this reaction series. I think this is what Katara could've become if her hate of the Fire Nation took over.
She's been challenged by Waterbenders before when Pakku refused to teach her. She stood up for herself.
Hama is Bloodbending to attack and hurt others. Katara had to Bloodbend to stop the attacks and to save for others.
Then, she almost became a younger Hama during "The Southern Raiders". Her anger almost took her, but she stopped.
Honestly, I think all of Zuko's trips with the Gaang help him as much as it does them.
18:50 Yeah, my first thought was if my dog ever got loose-and there was a full moon out of course, since you absolutely need that to bloodbend-I would use it to stop him from running out into the street.
Not me drinking the Trader Joe’s pumpkin spice rooibos while watching this…
I commend you for doing this. That being said, every interview I've seen from the showrunners on this live action adaptation only make me worry about the show.
In one breath they'll say it's "Not just for kids. It's Mature and appeals to game of thrones fans."
Then in the next they'll say things like "We toned down problematic elements of Sokka's character, particularly his sexism."
It's mature and not for kids + We censored the sexism to shelter the audience != Good adaptation.
They've also said Aang won't be as childlike.
So... Watered down sokka, more serious aang, and... Game of thrones vibes? Whatever the fuck THAT means.
idk wat it is but your energy during these reactions is just so different from any other reaction channel ive ever seen in a very good way (also prob becus u dont talk constantly while the episode is playing like some annoying ppl) keep up the great content!
I have a head cannon where Katara makes a new style of bending called flow state, she's in such a state of serenity where she's able to bend the water and blood in her own body, massively increasing her dodge speed and reaction time.
I love your vids there so relaxing
thank you!
@@michaelamostly omg Toph is reacting to my comment
1:15 missed opportunity to say tea is just hot leaf juice. :(
Kara is basically Yue at this point 😂 she’s just… the Moon
Also, how did no one in that village take note of Katara when Hama blatantly said “You’re a blood bender now” whilst being hauled away for blood bending to abduct people???
it would be nice if you brought on specific voice actors for their parts
I'm just in a small, teeny, tiny way disappointed that your editor left out the beginning where Sokka is telling his ghost story and makes the same sound as the background music.
As scary and traumatizing as Katara's introduction to bloodbending is, there are actually medical applications to bloodbending that would be cruel not to use.
One thing I know for sure is that this will be the first reaction video I’ve seen where no one assumes Hama is Nene, the little girl from Katara’s story.
And that's when you realize that you had a pile of hams as a guest host.
you're videos are very fun to watch
Wow the Bloodboiler!
So Karalynn has been associated with Jack DeSena and Ian Ousley. I wonder if she unknowingly has a connection to Chris Hardwick and Axlex Felten, the two other VAs for Sokka.
I’ve always wondered about the effects of this episode, like if a bloodbender could bend other elements through someone else. Ie, in this episode, Hama bends aang, who has the ability to bend all 4 elements. Could she bend air, or earth, through aang?
9:42 Does she mean the movie that’s coming out next year? That’s the only movie I know about.
Can you link the social media of your guests in the video description? 14:13 I think toph uses a key instead of metal bending because she doesn't want the fire nation to know they're not from here
One of the best episodes of the series!
Ever since I saw this episode as kids I always wondered if Earth benders/metal benders could technically also blood bend, since there is iron in our blood👀
This was a fantastic episode for us Emos back in the day.
I never thought about this. But how did Toph not know that Hama was approaching when they were picking the lock to the box in the attic?
I think the floor is made of wood. Also, Toph doesn't care, I don't think she was jumpscared when Hama spoke.
Hey! I'm not the only one who felt like he wasn't over Princess Yue! Thanks.
I had a friend at the time who couldn't understand why bloodbending was depicted as creepy and evil instead of just another tool in the toolbox.
We don't speak anymore.
They mentioned the movie that should never be mentioned 😮
Seems like an excelent "Brike Bite" question for Janet in the BTE podcast.
Why is Toph wearing bottoms on her shoes in the Puppetmaster episode. Continuity error?
Definitely continuity error. 2:55 Because even if for whatever reason Toph got new shoes, she says she needs the sole out to se better. I'm guessing the artist didn't think two thoughts about having to draw a sole-less shoe🤣
Toph bought new shoes with the money she made being The Runaway... Duh! ; )
So random, but I just recently discovered Karalynn from a collab she did with Rich Black Guy. Also, she has a nice voice and should definitely do more voice acting.
I figure Toph has soles on her shoes because she was burned. They might still be tender, even though Katara healed her
What about Fast Lane from Celestial Seasonings, in Golden, CO?
I guess if she metal bended, someone would betray them to fire nation
Exactly, they're pretending to be non-benders from the colonies.
I'm always confused when people say things like, "it's sad that content about war is still applicable, we should work on that!"
Humans have been at war in some way since the dawn of humanity. It's not just going to go away. It's not like this is a sudden, new problem, or a transient one. And really, WAR isn't the problem, the underlying causes of it are the problem. War is just the symptom. The very lethal symptom.
Wait that’s Karalynn Dunton! SHE CREATED THE RABBIDS!
Awesome reaction beautiful ladies. I'm a Leo sun and moon. Lol strong and also emotional. Definitely one of the dark episodes of The Last Airbender gotta give Katara credit for not using blood bending until the episode of looking for her mom's killer. Definitely could've used it against Azula tho. Ijs
It seems to me that a Metal-bender should also be able to Blood-bend because of the iron in blood. Does that make sense?
So where's that obligatory comment about how Katara crashing Hama's water stream is an earthbending tactic from which she got inspired by Toph? 😝
the special guest gives off ✨HEAVY Natalie Portman vibes✨
Awesome very cool
Crazy
11:08 to be fair Suki isn't dead
It’s nice to see a fellow Pisces (March 12th is my birthday) but I also enjoy the moonlit night. And while I think Bloodbending is a bit terrifying technique for waterbenders, I’d say it’s a useful technique, if used for the right reasons. Maybe like a last resort to use against your enemies. And speaking of the name of the tea, I wonder how powerful waterbenders are under a Blood Moon?
❤❤
I remember Avatar the Last Air bender
some people have only had hot leaf juice and need a better experience of tea.
The Puppet Master?!?! That sounds kinda scary.
I hope you can fly in the original cast or at least twinkle toes himself for the finale watch it together
Bloodbending is scary it's even scarier in The Legend Of Korra I think even Azula would have trouble with bloodbending
Katara could have actually stopped her right away width blood bending in that final confrontation, but she didn't.
@@e1123581321345589144 true she even does it a second time in her episode with Zuko and he was like omg this chick could easily kill me lol
so true!!
Hot leaf juice!
I heard that Dan Povenmire created the minions. Any comment Ms. Dunton? 😜
(PS he did not)
Bloodbending is super useful tough. Bloodbending firelord Ozai or Azula. Problem solved 🙂
i'm a little worried about the live action Netflix series.
The writers of the original show left it because of "creative differences."
I think we are starting to hear about some of these differences.
Sokka doesn't start out sexist and learn to grow out of that I thought was a powerful message. Aang trying to avoid his destiny and us later learning why gave some real depth to him. They have now gave him a "laser focus on his task." These are just the confirmed changes.
There are some other rumored ones that really sound like they are dumbing down the series.
Part of what made this series so good was the character faults, the learning and the mistakes they made.
Wan Shi Tong still makes me physically uncomfortable?
I like Avatar the Last Airbender my brothers and sister
Bro I finally got my girlfriend into this show and this is one of my favorite episodes but man when her and I got to puppet master
Yeah she won't be watching the puppet master anymore 😂😂😭😭
Hey
You know if Avatar the Last Airbender were made for adults, bloodbending would be literally bending blood shed outside the body. 🩸
never mess with us old timers - we may not have the strength and speed of youth, but we have the skills and sneakiness that comes with age.... [ok, so Katara won, but the others didn't so Hama won against more people than she lost to] 🐒
It's nothing more then.hot leaf juice
Karalynn looks very much like Natalie Portman
