      @@thedrummersclub3667 I consider Steve Smith the modern Buddy Rich As far as snare drum technique except he's doing tricks! I mean, really if you watch Steve Smith snare drum technique he is very much on an extremely close level to Buddy Rich. There's one other guy but I can't think of his name cuz he's not super famous but he has Buddy Rich level snare drum technique and chops. Of course there is Vinny and many other drummers but if you want to talk about modern snare drum level Buddy Rich style technique I'm going with Steve Smith

    • @troyb4533
      @troyb4533 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      At one point in time the act of “soloing” was all improvised. That’s what makes any musician a good one. Anyone can memorize a piece and play it over and over. But only a true master can create a piece of something musical on the spot.

    • @Peter64AD

      The only thing is, Buddy solos to show how brilliant he is (especially to other drummers) rather than creating something that a typical (non-drummer) audience would actually like to listen to. To a non-drummer this just sounds like a machine gun being fired at a drum kit. Zero musicality.

    Single stroke roll. Double stroke roll. Triple stroke roll. One hand roll. Old whip cream roll. All here. I have this DVD and it is a treasure. Watch him use the brushes. In this particular solo there are so many subtleties that the listener will have to listen several times to catch them all. The single stroke roll so fast for so long is almost impossible for any drummer. You are a rock drummer? Ask Neil Peart about Buddy Rich. He gets it. He will tell you. I love to watch Buddy play. He makes it look all too easy. The single stroke roll he did at the Frank Sinatra concert is so fast his hands and sticks look like humming bird wings. Whatever he imagined, he could will his sticks to play. A legend.

    I've grown SO weary of drum solos. There are some great rock drummers - Brian Tichy and Todd Sucherman come to mind - but they all do essentially the same things. A few visual tricks, slow build to fast, you all know what they do and it's usually a similar approach. Buddy Rich is nothing like that. He's beyond incredible. He's playing what most drummers today would consider a "starter kit", a snare, one tom, one floor tom and a kick drum, a few cymbals and a high hat. Good Lord. And most of this solo is on his snare. Absolutely the greatest ever, I had the good fortune to see him and the big band in Disneyland many years ago, we got there early and sat in chairs and watched a genius at play.

I think all of these things put together gave him the mental ability to play way beyond any other player. He also played the drums his whole life and never was tired of doing it. I see him over 150 times live , and got close to him away from the drums .
    What a guy he was , and your right the speed is nothing ....its the total control he has every single moment , and the total dexterity in all his limbs .
    Trust me knowing him and spending time with him was just jawdropping .I miss him as much today... as the day he died .
    My life has never been the same .

    stood in line outside on a cold wintry night waiting for Buddy to arrive at the Harmar House in Cheswick Pa. Musician after musician could not wait for buddy to arrive. I believe he just taped the Mike Douglas show. His entire band was on the stage waiting for their boss to arrive. and when he did he came to the band stand thru off his over coat and kicked off with Sister Sadie. the crowd went nuts and buddy obliged and said he was so happy to be in Harmarville. Sell out crowd and kid you not buddy knew the audience was appreciative and like always he complimented his fans with some super drumming impossible fills and then later on West Side and Channel One that was a special night for me and all of Buddys fans enough said

      The guy has to be a robot. If drumming was climbing Mount Everest, Buddy would be sitting at the peak while all other drummers would be still putting on their gear. Joe Morello would be about half way up but that's still a long way to the top.

      @@oldsrocket8841 I think you meant a compliment when calling Rich a robot because he's so technically advanced. He is technically a "BEAST" and we know how much intelligent time he put in to reaching this level. Tapped in to deepening "the groove". The man is conveying the infinite exploration of his instrument. The variation in sounds from a myriad of points and tension combinations that form a calculus of music, not just a change from cymbal to tomtom to snare to base but from tip to toe and from center to edge and from rim to shell. It's like he's urging the musician to explore and not just settle for the obvious. It's the genius of jazz.

He is doing what he does best, which is giving the music his all to the best of his ability. What he is doing is very emotional as well as technical. It all comes from the heart, and that's always what Rich possessed beyond all other drummers...physical technical abilities and all the experience of playing with all the great jazz musicians from the 30's 40' 50's and 60's.
