I'm sorry but I didn't like Unity. The combat was pretty neat, stealth mechanics was great my issue with it was the story. The story did not make sense at all. There were multiple scenarios where Arno did not make sense in this game. To throw it off we barely got gameplay on the DLC where we finally see Arno's full potential to some degree. Left me wanting more and the end of the game just did not make sense at all not to mention the dreadful modern-day story as well.

@@nenadmilovanovic5271 the core was what kept people around and built the audience in the first place. It was the design and mechanics that became stale, the fact that it devolved into a checklist of icons on a map you had to spend time getting to and getting rid of just for the sake of them. The advantage with origins was it took the side activities and made them actually interesting by making the overall design more like an RPG so they felt meaningful and therefore justified. The core principle though is a lone assassin sent to deliver a single decisive blow in order to affect broad reaching power struggles and conflicts, origins managed to keep just enough of that that it was able to walk the line between the two, odyssey went too far into the RPG elements and now that's all AC is, it's just trying to imitate better RPGs and not even doing a great job at it. It's a series with no through line anymore. It's not to say they're bad necessarily, if you enjoy them, more power to you man, I'm happy you can, they just don't do anything for a lot of people who've been long time fans though and I think that's why.

@@thecriticalgamer8462 new AC games are great RPGs, story is average yes, but exploration, combat, progression and customisation are above industry standard. Look at Witcher 3, the most famous RPG of last generation which I sunk 200h into. Combat is clunky and unresponsive, it relies completely on the abuse of quen and dodge buttons. Movement feels like driving a tank, gear progression is ruined by witcher sets, level progression is ruined by the main storyline which in turn fails to reward exploration, since you never need xp or gear. World is dead since CDPR don't know how to make dynamic AI systems. AC games do each of these things better. Name one thing that Witcher 3 did better than AC aside from story and sidequests?

I really enjoyed Unity, although I didn't play it until it was "fixed" I agree it was the last game that felt like an AC game, while I loved Origins it was definitely the start of the shift away. Unless the next game has something remarkable about it I won't be playing. I only ended up playing Valhalla because of the delay to Cyberpunk(sigh) otherwise I wouldn't have even picked up the latest one.
I though that the Unity combat was actually moving in the right direction after the criticism of AC3 and AC4, but that nose dived with Syndicate before taking a completely different angle after that.

Best thing is watching this quick-vid while drinking tea from a Les Misérables mug lol. I still love Unity. I played it during a series retrospective long after launch, as I had skipped it due to the poor reception it got, and I felt like an idiot. Having been a Syndicate fanboy, because I'm a student of mid/late 18th century socioeconomic/political dialogues, I was blown away by Unity. Between the two I still have more find memories with Arno and Elise than I do of Jacob and Evie - Starrick is still my favorite Templar though.
Untity has an atmosphere, tone, and a design that just screams AC, and the grays that it allowed itself to dip into with also extremely satisfying. I also appreciated it's open ending where Arno doesn't go back to the Assassin's as a member, but still continues the mission in his own way.
I agree that the failure of this game became the death-knell of the AC we knew, and with the rise of "open-world" games becoming the norm, the writing was on the wall. And it is such a shame since AC really does work best when it's a tight-knit story with exploration and RPG elements as garnish rather than the focus.

Thank you, I think Unity was peak for gameplay possibilities crouch, dense crowds, amount of useful tools(one not as useful but if they took they’re time it would’ve been better for cherry bombs), best parkour animations, beautiful world. I played on launch that everything was some beautiful and so exciting for the franchise I didn’t even care about game breaking glitches because it was even so beautiful before their was seemingly a slight graphical downgrade I found more disappointing then the glitches themselves. Most of the time just laughed because I couldn’t hate the game no matter what because they added som much amazing ways to go about missions, amazing city, they even have you a cool way to define your playing type by tracking the way you play the game and being able to go to the link in game to see your Assassin type along with my favorite AC multiplayer. Then they abandon it for the RPG stuff completely, I mean there was already elements that were heading that way I don’t get why they had to abandon the great gameplay mechanics they just created, especially the detecting multiple ways of completing your mission influencing events and creating a distraction to make your way in, and social stealth great idea in Syndicate of being able to kidnap for social stealth. It’s all just such a shame that they abandoned it for something that just feels more basic gameplay and get rid of the looting animations where it get rid of certain amounts of realism for basic rpg ways of doing things in a game that it suppose to be how things really happen I like that Assassins creed used to not wave their hands above enemies to loot and actually loot and have a risk to looting if their was any guards around.

Syndicate is completely worse than unity in my opinion, from the settings to the mechanics to the story, I have always said it makes me sad the backlash it got although just because of bugs at launch but will likely mean we would never get a game like it ever again. Unity and black flag are the two AC games that always make me exited when they come in my mind and make me wanna go back and play them again, there stories just are phenomenal and gameplay wise are so fun. I have to say I have not yet completely played the first few games before AC 3 a couple of times halfway only maybe if I get to finishing them things will not stay the same based on reviews I heard. Also I dont hate the new games but think they could have been a seperate IP or potentially some other workaround maybe in rotation year after year that we could still get games like unity because they were just beginning to perfect every aspect of that style of game and it was just magnificent.

My biggest gripe with Unity (apart from all of the freaking locked doors and chests...🙄) was that the co-op missions, extra missions, and even some of the crime scenes weren't chronological to the storyline. I spent a ton of time researching the events of the French Revolution just to play all of the side events and extra content in proper order alongside the main quest.
It would have made so much more sense if they had locked certain events behind pivotal moments in the storyline before you could access them, rather than just offering you all of these historical events to play with no care of what order in which they were done in. What made it especially frustrating was the fact that some early events were made extremely difficult and next to impossible to complete if you hadn't progressed far enough in the storyline to level up Arno.

And let's not forget that the team at Ubisoft offered their raw capture data to France when the Notre Dame Cathedral roof caught fire a couple years back. The poured so much love into the representation of the Cathedral in Unity. That being said, I did buy Unity for PC after the first couple of major patches came out and still found it unplayable. Syndicate even more so, I couldn't get past the first hour without my rig crashing, and it's still a pretty decent rig even now. At this point, I don't think I'll repurchase either game for the PS4.
I never bought Origins, but I did buy Odyssey, and currently playing Valhalla. I'm enjoying the pre-Crusade timeline we've been exploring in these games. I know that rumours have started to fly about the next game, but the new direction of the games certainly lack the charm of what the Ezio Trilogy and Black Flag held. I enjoy the quality of the current trilogy, much more than of games past.
I just wish that game companies would stop rushing out unfinished products that get a response of, "Meh", and let their IP's get killed off by poor sales. I believe that the world of the Assassin's Creed series still holds merit in today's gaming industry. Ubisoft just needs to Kojima themselves, say screw the haters, and do it anyways. And do it right. No matter how long that takes.

Unity has what I think is one of the most interesting depiction of the Assassins and Templars because of how many different types of people are shown on both sides. Some think extermination of the other side is the right thing, some are willing to kill their own, some want peace and some are too caught up in proper procedure to be effective. Arno and Elise show that allegiance in the war doesn’t mean automatic enemies, as both work together across the game despite knowing they should be at odds. It’s very Romeo and Juliet like that. Both the French Assassins and Templars are victims of infighting, with Arno and Elise at risk because of this, and both side suffer losses to the more extreme individuals among them.
Unity is also the first AC game where the love interest is a main part of the plot. Yes, Sophia is present in a lot of Revelations and contributes to the quest for the Masyaf keys, but Arno’s journey is driven entirely by Elise. He unwittingly lets Francois de la Serre die because he’s impatient to see Elise at the party and when he escapes the Bastille his first move is to find her. He repeatedly defends her against the other Assassins even when she’s framed for murdering one of them, and Arno’s arc in the Dead Kings DLC is recovering from losing her. Syndicate does have a love story as a byproduct of Evie’s character arc, and even a proposal scene if you get all the pressed flowers, but it’s nowhere near as prominent as the tragic romance of Arno and Elise (his pessimistic final monologue is in part influenced because Elise died in the final confrontation with St Germain, as well as the disunity he’s witnessed in the game in different groups).

According to Ubisoft the missing faces was only the PC version without the day one patch installed. Yet it’s something that still haunts this game as if it was some widespread bug across all versions. Unity’s issues have always been overblown imo, mostly by people who didn’t even play the game yet claimed it was broken and unplayable. There’s been people recently playing the console version without any patches so they can run it at 60fps on XSX/PS5. If it was as broken as people claimed this version should be unplayable, right? Lol Digital Foundry did a good video on the unpatched version running on XSX, I recommend if anyone is interested. I played Unity at release on PS4 (as well as on XB1 a few months later) and always felt the issues it had at release were exaggerated, the biggest problem I had was just the unstable frame rate.

Dude, great point on why Ubisoft went to the Origins model. I always thought it was derived from the success of the Witcher, but you're right too, it's driven by the failure of Unity and then when they looked at what people wanted, they saw the Witcher and just copied it. Meanwhile, I absolutely loved Origins and the rest. It's a great model. But not original.

  • @liva9994
    @liva9994 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I feel it's worth to mention that Origin is just as much an inspiration and trying to take part in the success that was The Witcher 3. Hench it tried to copy the witcher almost 1 to 1, in terms of combat, traversal etc. Just a bit more parkour. Feel like it was less the disaster that was Unity, and more the FOMO, and trying to go into a different market with an established IP. Like Dawn of war or other games have done.

Definitely the best combat and Parkour of the series in my opinion. The finishers were brutal and satisfying. Valhalla does come pretty damn close with satisfaction of combat

I love Origins, I love Bayek. Out of the three last new mythology saga games I love Origins the most. However it’s indeed a large departure from the classic AC games as we knew them. Unity is one of my favourite AC games. Some of the older ones have become… outdated. They’re still fun, but just not as much fun as they were. That’s just normal. Altaïr, Ezio and Edward will always be my favourite Assassins from the classic AC games and that won’t change.

Last summer, I did a replay of the series from AC1 to Syndicate before hopping back on Odyssey to finish the DLC. I came away with the firm belief that Unity was the best the series has ever been (still believe that) and, after loving Odyssey at first, felt it was a disgrace to the series once I returned to it. I know it's unlikely, but I wish Ubisoft could work on a Unity remaster with more time and hardware power on their hands.

Personally for me even tho I love black flag and Edward. I think black flags unique being a pirate for almost entire game but having the option to be an assassins from the start and it’s success became the reason for what we got in origin and Valhalla. They all have us be something else like a protector or a Viking but at the same time give us the option of being an assassins.
