- When I shared on social media that I would be covering a lampshade, several people asked if I would share my method. I have made several different lampshades over the years, but this one is pretty simple, no-sew, and adds a custom look to a boring shade.
What you'll need -
lamp shade
about a yard of fabric
scissors
rotary cutter
clear ruler
cutting mat
iron & ironing board
hot glue gun & glue sticks
A few tips -
1 - Use a lightweight cotton fabric so it's easy to work with and glue down.
2 - Select a fabric that is semi-transparent, so it will still filter the light and not block it entirely (unless that's the goal.)
3 - In this video, I pleated the fabric, but you can also gather it for more of a ruched look.
4 - If your fingers are sensitive (I have oven mitt hands), then use a popsicle stick or something similar to hold the fabric in place until it cools.

Lampshades are obscenely expensive, even for just plain white ones! This is a great way to renew a lampshade and save lots of money and get a beautiful new shade. This came out beautiful...so easy too....I am going to re-do the shades I have for a fraction of the cost of new ones...Thank you!
Bias tape is cut on the bias of the fabric. It makes the tape easier to "fit" to whatever it's being used with.
Yes, you are right! If you have enough fabric, cutting it on the diagonal (or bias) is a better way to make the tape. For something like a lampshade, you can get away with cutting it straight to save fabric.
my thoughts exactly. this isn't bias tape.. it's simply binding tape.. it's has no natural stretch as bias would have
Genius! So much easier than the sewing method, thank you🙌🏼☺️
I’m definitely going to be trying ! Thank you!!!❤
Love the ease of this lamp shade tutorial, glue is right up my alley!
So glad!
Excellent work
This is genius! I can't tell you how frustrated I've been this summer & fall finding beautiful lamps at thrift stores that have custom sized lamp shades to go with them, but the shades were ugly/dirty/or damaged and I couldn't figure out how to rescue them. Thank you for this tidbit of knowledge!
I love this as I do not sew!!!! And blue and white is my favorite. I have a small kitchen counter lamp that I can't wait to try this on!
Very pretty. Love the fabric. Thank you
Thank You 😊👍👍 Going to cover a lamp shade today THANK YOU !!
So helpful, so tired of mismatched lampshades !
Thank you so much. You’re a great teacher!
It looks so nice! Love this!
Thanks Marian! As soon as my sewing room is unboxed I look forward to covering a lamp shade.❤❤ Yours looks beautiful. Xoxo
Thank you sooooo much for this tutorial, can’t wait to try this!
A great tutorial Marian!
I so enjoy your Tutorials! Thanks for sharing I can’t wait to use this one!🤍
You’re so talented God bless you ❤
Really pretty - love the fabric!!! It's perfect! Gorgeous with the quilt! Do you have a source/name? Bull Clips are super helpful for lampshade making - especially for those of us not blessed with oven mitt hands!
Yes, the fabric is Pedigree by Thibault. I was able to purchase it from Fabric Guru.
I love your tutorials. The shade is gorgeous x
This is a great tutorial!
Thanks. Only, how to go when there is only a frame, and this is wavy... I have already spoilt the first try, very difficult.
Looks perfect!!!
Thank you! I have a few lamp shades that need covering, 2 are lined with fabric and the lining is in great shape , though I think I should cut current bias. Currently shades are tailored and paneled. Do you think I can leave panel bias since I’m pleating? I just think top and bottom bias might be to bulky and look cheap?
Beautiful ❤️
How does using a stripe fabric affect the process?
Will it ever catch on fire with the heat?
Love it!!!
lovely
You have not cut the trim on the bias!
Bias tape must be cut on the bias….
If you and your partner are engaging in playful or humorous behavior, such as putting a lampshade on your head, it could be seen as a lighthearted moment between the two of you. However, if your wife's reaction of chasing you with a rolling pin causes you discomfort or distress, it is important to address your feelings and concerns with her in a calm and honest manner.
