YESS ! Do people not realize you can be black without being African? I feel like melanesians have it hardest out of all of the Pacific islanders because of the racism and colorism deeply embedded in to our cultures.
I agree, I had yet to met any Pacific islanders until I worked New Zealand, I didn't know anyone when I arrived there but when I left, I had more than 30+ of my Polynesian friends and their families farewell my family and I, it was very emotional for my wife and I we will never forget their kindness and remain friends to this day.
This video kinda broke my heart specially the girl who got emotional and cried. I love ALL of the Pacific Islanders and wish they NEVER disappear because they are just colourful and full-of-life cultures that we need in this world.
Malikah William shes phoning in to the sjw victimhood opression olympics. Theres hundreds of thousands of native Hawaiins. Theres way more Hawaiins than there are Chammaro, Samoan and Tongans! and they werent crying like wtf btw in the future most of earths population is going to be blended together like Brazilians so I dont buy the tears, eventually most people groups are going to become something new, though in the foreseeable future Hawaiins are just fine.
Thank yu....bt as she said our races are getting slim to none due to new commers bt I can't say that I hate new commers to our islands cause I'm also a child of a new commer and an islander..and I'm pretty sure every one could guess just right what half new commers i am(HALF KOREAN!!)😂😂

As a Samoan and a resident in Hawaii, I'm ecstatic that a social media outlet is taking the time to recognize the pacific island cultures and the hardships we've been and are still going through.
Hawaii is now hating on non natives as all the land is disappearing under new ownership the natives are now calling for the Monarchy to rule again separately from the USA they want to kick out non natives at that time. How's Hawaii life going for you as a non native? Any different treatment as you're Samoan/Polynesian?

^^ true Polynesians are the most known. You say “Samoan and Tongan”, people be like “oh those people?”. You say “Chuukese and Marshallese” and people be like “Cookies and marshmallows?”
Well, we don’t have people like Dwayne Johnson, Troy Polamalu, Jason Momoa, etc. At the end of the day, we’re all Pacific Islanders and share the same, almost identical, culture. I, for one, personally don’t mind referencing Hawaii or Somoa when defining myself, Micronesian/Marshallese mixed with Japanese. I understand others may not be as free and willing. Don’t get me twisted, I am very aware and proud of my origin. Think about it man, there’s google and almost everybody carries a smart device. If they care enough, they’ll educate themselves. If not, hey it’s all good 🤓🤙🏾
HAWAIIANS ARE NOT DYING, WE ARE ALIVE! WE ARE FIGHTING OPPRESSION DAILY! WE ARE FILLING UP COLLEGES, AND MAKING HELLA BABIES. LOVE TO ALL MY ISLANDERS AND POLYNESIANS!
I feel blessed I was born in NZ , Auckland having the largest polynesian communities in the world I always felt connected to my island roots and going to school where 90% of the population were islanders
@@crispyrat2386 Generalisation is not good. I dont think ive met any bad islanders but that doesnt mean theres any bad ones. I do know that sometimes our behaviour is public nuisance for eg. Blasting islander songs in the middle of the night with a siren, Late night parties and what not. Anyways stay safe bruh...🇫🇯🇫🇯🇫🇯 Loloma ātu and much love
well the Maori people are actually not pacific islanders as they are native to New Zealand which although is in Polynesia, it is not in the pacific islands
Originally, before they came to New Zealand, they came from Hawaiki, which is deemed to be where all Polynesians originated from. But yeah, they are native to New Zealand.
I'm getting emotional watching this. I am not Pacific Islander but I feel very connected to them spiritually. Thank you for sharing their stories I loved this video.
When I think of Pacific islanders I think of people living near the water. Probably people with high levels of seafood in their diet. And possibly having multiple uses of any resources on the islands. People who were humble to a fault yet deadly when provoked. People who probably were very well versed in reading ocean/star patterns and sailing around the entirety of the pacific and colonizing those islands. People who probably went to war with neighboring islands over cultural differences. Who’s children have now carried on that hate even after moving off island(looking at you Samoans and Tongans). But yeah. That’s what I think about when I think of Pacific Islanders
Even though Hawaii and the Pacific Islands are part of the US, I have literally learned nothing about them culturally or economically during my 12 years of school.
True! We never learned about them. I only remember them teaching us about WWII in the pacific. But you know. I was in American History. So we don’t really learn about other countries histories unless it involves the US. Oh and just a small correction. It’s just pacific islands like Hawaii, Guam, the Northern Marianas, and American Samoa that are part of the US. All the other pacific islands are their own countries.
@@uts4448 Not all of them are independent. French Polynesia, Marquesas Islands, and New Caledonia belong to France. I agree, schools in the US mainland don't teach about their overseas territories or state. Unless you got your k-12 and post high school education in Hawaiʻi like me, I would say I'm quite knowledgeable about Oceania. But no quote me, I might be wrong. Kdenz brah, Aloha from O'ahu.
Well, if u didn’t know u probably did but Some American sugar planters overthrew the Queen (Queen Liliuokalani) and took over the islands and that’s how the Hawaiian islands are apart of the US. (What I learned from my school)
My impression of Pacific Islanders growing up in Australia, was a group of people who were strong minded, proud of their culture and valued family above everything else.
There is good and bad things in Polynesian culture even with family, it's hatred and drama but also love and deep care even if we don't like showing it to much
I lived in American Samoa for fifteen years and it was such an interesting experience. The culture there is still so rich and that's so rare nowadays. Beautiful place.
Racist: are you some type of Hawaiian?? Me: I'm actually Samoan. Racist: well go back to where you came from! Me: .............. I'm from Orange County.
Cyrus Sitagata - Its funny how these racists like to tell people to go back where u came from, I'm assuming this person was white, next time tell Mr. Racist that HE should go back home...to europe! And I ain't racist, I'm half white n half Hawaiian and live in Hawai'i, my mom is from the mainland, but I cannot stand when white people in the mainland pull that card, but when they do, people gotta remind them that America was a land of brown skin, not white, Fucken pilgrims!
I am really proud as Micronesian(Palau🇵🇼) and a Pacific Islander. We are very special People. From Polynesia, to Melanesia, and Micronesia. We are proud Pacific Islanders. We always have each others back.
As a Hawaiian, it royally pisses me off whenever people mock or try to imitate my culture. They always say things like "Hawaii? They have SUCH and easy life there! Nothing like the states!" For your information, my family's life really is tough. Some of my friends were forced on the streets because some haole wanted to live in their house. The government sends homeless people here because they get "privileges". People STILL don't think that Hawaii has a culture and language. Even so, I am proud to have Hawaiian blood and have the aloha spirit in my life. Hawai'i imua!
I am pretty late but most of what a most Americans think about Hawaii is from advertisements and TV and stuff, and usually when companies want people to go on a vacation there they don't really go into the not so good stuff, otherwise people wouldn't want to go there, and that would hurt business, so you can't really blame the people themselves when the advertisers are the main ones making people think that is the case, Also I don't really know anything about your friends being forced to move out, but chances are the white people (because yes, I know exactly what you mean by "haole") were willing to pay more and the landlord being a land lord wanted to make money off of someone else renting their land/living space, and so they kicked them out, not saying it was right, but business is business, and sometimes people get screwed over, also did the white person know people were already living there? Because if not then they may have been unaware of what they accidentally caused, if they did know then thats kind of on them, and they should have looked for a different house, I doubt many people think Hawaii doesn't have a culture or a language, but the whole learning some island chain in the middle of the Pacific Ocean's culture thing isn't exactly on everyones to do list, and what they do know or think they know is again, because of advertisements, EDIT: Just put "people" where it should have been, which now makes "the advertisers are the main ones making people think that is the case, "
Love of Anime, i understand why you didn't reply to that comment. White America make up false reasons as to justify why our cultures and land has been stripped from us.
+Casandra Langely If you can name one false reason in my comment I would like to hear it, because as far as I am aware most of what I was stating was pure facts, and if those "facts" are wrong, why not correct them? And can you name one time in that comment I made an excuse or a "false reason" as to why your "culture and land" has been "stripped" from you?
When i think of Hawaii i think of surfing and tourism, but i also think of the beautiful culture and hawaiian nature! Hawaii is very..unique but so beautiful! It's a shame that it's not an independent country.. you can definitely be proud of being hawaiian!
I'm from Guam. Just to have a widely known TH-cam channel and social media interview islanders and their options or views and even out history makes me happy to know that people will now know that my culture exists.
I was never taught about the pacific islands so I took it upon myself and learnt about it. It’s such a beautiful culture and the islands are gorgeous itself. It’s sad to think that people just use those lands for vacations like there is no history and culture there.
The only reason these people have any voice at all is because the White Man enjoyed their islands enough to put money into them. Otherwise they'd be like the undiscovered tribes of the Amazon which NOBODY cares about.
At least ur not melenesians. nobody knows who we are ( even though we have the biggest poulatiion in the Pacific). I'm from Papua New Guinea (AKA: LARGEST FRICKIN ISLAND IN THE PACIFIC THAT FOR SOME REASON NOBODY CAN FRICKIN SEE AKA: Winner of the 2015 Pacific Games)

pretty much if you're from California its called Californians, new york = new yorkers etc. but calling someone who lives in hawaii; hawaiian is kind of wrong cause hawaiian is a race. Like me, I live in hawaii but im not hawaiian, im filipino that have integrated with american and hawaiian cultures. idk what mainland people call us but I consider myself american ^_^. its kind of a confusing thing but really we just call people who were born here as locals.
I'm from Hawaii. *BUT,* I feel these people. People should recognize that Hawaii isn't the only Pacific island. There are much more islands like Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, etc. Not just Hawaii. You should've learnt that in school. And we're nice, not lazy. Yes, we have a culture. Yes, we've had bad times. But we're *OHANA.* Treat each other with Aloha. Love and respect.
In America it seems only Hawai'i is widely recognised. That is hardly the case in Australia and Aotearoa! The Pacific island populations here are some of the highest in the world and to be honest not many native Hawai'ians over here
for me being a samoan/african american, it's difficult finding videos where i feel represented. bless the samoan guy who is at the beginning of the video, i related to him on a personal level. 😂
I'm surprised they didn't have a Marshallese person talking about how the US relocated the people of Bikini Atoll to unfamiliar islands and used Bikini as a nuclear test site from1946-1958, making the island uninhabitable for many years till this day because of the radiation.
+Dominic Scalia they definitely weren't trying to, but they did give the Hawaiians diseases and stuff, which sucks for them, but it's not like it was intentional,
@Dominic Scalia In New Zealand the Maori language was nearly wiped out not long ago they were banned from speaking Maori. In New Zealand around 16% of the population are Maori.
@Dominic Scalia Totally agree bro. Saying destroyed is pretty inaccurate. I mean Europeans basically developed many pacific islands and even today some islands still use the infrastructure built by Europeans.
I am a Pacific Islander from West Papua which is in the same land as Papua New Guinea but not the same country, we are just a neighbour. My country got taken over by Indonesia and we want to be free but the Indonesian government says NO, we have a lot genocide there, but it is done secretly. We were forced to be with the Indonesian N till this day we don't have any right in our own land. So many people does not know many things about my country. #Melanesianpride The people in this video are Polynesian but Solomon, Vanuatu, PNG, West Papua and New Caledonia are Melanesians. Its coz they're American and ignorant, they haven't done their homework and personally, I wouldn't pay this production too much mind by the way of their thoroughness and relevance, it seems rushed, ill-prepared, mis-informed and disingenuous. Kaleilehua Okimoto I feel like eventually all Hawaiians will be gone . Theres not much of us left. We need to keep Hawaiians and all other Polynesian races alive and unite!
real talk tho what white people did to the natives is really fucked up alright since some people think I'm only talking about Pacific Islanders, I mean _all natives_
Zelda Trash well I mean you have to look at it from all angles it was either going to be The US to claim that land and give them protection or it was going to be another country like Japan to take the land. Fun fact in 1920 the Japanese counted for 42% percent of the population in the Hawaiian islands now it's like 18% or something
Zelda Trash not always. In the case of the Maori, which they FAILED TO MENTION, we ate the white people and traded with them just fine. In Hawaiis case. Yh they were badly treated later on and thats fucked. But the whole thing about Cook destroying Hawaii, thats bs. The hawaiians killed cook, and it was because Kāmehameha killed him that Hawaii was then unified under him.
It's rare to see a full blooded Hawaiian. Most "Hawaiians" are Japanese or Filipino. I long for the day till I see a full blooded Hawaiian. It seems like finding a gem, not saying these races are bad but it'd be nice to come by someone who is full Hawaiian and really look at them and learn what their true blood looks like. Not bashing anyone that's Japanese/Filipino tbh.
Nst Bst but have you thought about why there are so few “full-blooded” People from Hawai’i? People cant help their heritage and if they are part Hawai’ian then you cant deny their ancestry, theres no such thing as part this or part that. You either live it or you don’t.
I agree..I'm Puerto Rican and Portuguese and my grandmother is full blooded Taino native American..I'm married to a Full blooded Tongan and my daughter is very mixed but I have no right to claim native American even though the 6 DNA tests say I'm 20 percent native..I would feel bad taking from the full bloods..
I grew up in a little town called Kekaha on the west side of the island of Kaua'i. Many of my neighbors were 100% Hawaiian and more importantly my mom's dad ~ my grandpa~was 100%native Hawaiian. Though rare, you'll still be able to meet and talk story with pure Hawaiians if you go and visit the island of Kaua'i. They also live on Ni'ihau but that's a privately owned island and not accessible to everyone.
What I gotta deal with: Person: Is that your sister? Me: Yeah Person: No shes not Me: Yeah shes my cousin but I consider her my sister Person: Ohhhhh so you guys are cousins Me: ...yeah
i deal w/ that too haha me” dis is my sistah” person: “but u dont have any siblings” me: “titah, we dont gotta we dont needa have da same blood foa her to be my sistah”
In filipino culture everyone is an immediate family. So when US people ask us about family they get al confused with the uncles and the uncles and aunties that are just close friends of your parents.
I'm from East New Britain and I couldn't agree more. PNG & NZ will be the only islands left once the pacific ocean fully rises 🤷♂️ - I don't think anyones realized this, too busy fighting over taro and whos cooler than the other lol

Bula from a Fijian brother! My grandparents were the biggest influence in my life. The lessons they taught me are priceless, for example how to read the waves to know where to find fish, hunt for wild pigs, how to raise chickens, how to slaughter animals humanely for food (I learned at 5 years of age), climb the coconut tree, husk and scrape the coconut for milk (every freaking day!) how to preserve the mangroves for future generation for tapa making, the different medicinal purposes of plants and how they heal us. How to plant crops and understand how having a balanced farm is so important in the long term. Some of my best memories was listening to my grandfather tell us legends of our ancestors. These and many other traditions are starting to disappear from island life. I'm only in my 30's now and I wonder what it'll be like in 10-20 years. Are more island kids going to forget their culture? What are we doing to preserve such rich traditions?
Moved to the west a while ago and had no idea about the Pacific Islander population before that. I was immersed into their culture and was blown away at the amount of different people. I love learning about them and attended as many of their parties, holidays, and cultural events as I could. I can say I absolutely love these people and what the have to offer and I suggest everyone else should learn about them too!!

*As a Asian Pacific Islander (75% Chamorro and 25% Filipino) I am EXTREMELY PROUD of MY HERITAGE and MY CULTURE. YES! It's tough growing up AND living state side, dealing with people who have NO IDEA about Pacific Islanders. I still get frustrated trying to EXPLAIN where I'm from. I'm constantly mistaken for being Mexican. This video is emotional for me because they're ALL right! Our culture is slowly fading away and we are becoming more accustomed to the AMERICAN/HAOLE/STATESIDE ways. I feel like I'm looked down on for no longer carrying my Chamorro accent and I speak "PROPER ENGLISH" even though I've spoken English my entire life. It is ultimately up to OUR GENERATION to carry on our HERITAGE to our children and our children's children, but with the backlash and discrimination that we face as ISLANDERS, it will be a tough battle to win. To ALL my P.I.'s REMAIN STRONG and KEEP the CULTURE ALIVE!!*
I think many people, especially in the US, genuinely think they're the same thing. Maybe because they get grouped together in data sets and for statistical reports? I had an American friend once comment that I was a certain way "because you're Asian." I was like.. "uh, Asian? Since when?" (I'm half maori)
Soso Notchurbusiness the only reason I say "even if" is because I've researched about the migration route for Pacific Islanders, and they say that they came from Asia. But we cant be too sure about certain evidence because we ourselves weren't there thousands of years ago, we dont know what kind of world it was back then as a whole. I just say "even if" on the basis of my uncertainty towards my research

The Polynesians in Australia aren't bitches that cry about such irrelevant things such as "cultural appropriation". American Polys are fcking cry babies.
I am not a pacific islander but I have intense desires to learn more about your cultures because there is so much to it and it's so complex and I recently read about Captain Cook it's absolutely heartbreaking to see what colonialism has done and is still doing to indigenous cultures.
I'm a chamorro girl living on Guam and to my fellow chamorros featured on this video, I wish that you'd have spoken more about the chamorros rights on Guam and how the U.S. and the Americans here on the island had negatively affected us chamorros. But it is awesome to see this video and for you to be representing all of us islanders.
I have been waiting years for a video like this to come out. As a Tongan American I learned in school that Pacific Islanders didn't matter historically and that they weren't relevant. This just gives me hope for my fellow Polynesians/Micronesians/and Pacific Islanders in general out there to not be lost in this modern century. (I cried when I watched this)
Caiden Marie, this is not directed at anyone in the video, just Filipinos with no Polynesian blood who think they are Polys. Not saying they aren't cool peoples though. Just wanna have our uniqueness. Also, what's with the "Asian Pacific Islanders" thing. Why not just "Pacific Islanders".
god bless you Pacific islanders💙 youre cultures are so fascinating and you are all so unique& beautiful! I pray that you dont fade away, it Would be a big lost!
Your families and culture are one of the most beautiful and magical on this rock. Personally I work with the public on a daily basis. And I will say I have made many friends with Pacific islanders and out of all the people and cultures I have met/encountered. Pacific islanders are one of the most holistic and kind spirited cultures I have ever encountered. Truly beautiful people.
I feel lucky that I have Maori ancestry and it may seem like a struggle, but I'm honoured to come from a unique group of people. Pacific Islanders shouldn't have to struggle, we're a proud group of people and videos like this will help others understand the rich cultures of the pacific.
a struggle of being Polynesian, trying to explain to people where Samoa is.. it usually just ends up in me saying "you know New Zealand?! Oh yeap, of course you do, well it's right near there".. close enough I guess o_o?
Hafa adai! This video is spot on. I was born and raised in TN but my family is from Guam. I can't tell you how many times I've had to explain to people that my family is not from Guatemala , but from Guam.
My Opinion We live in a world where there's internet. People shouldn't be stereotyping cultures. To be curious is fine, but to take stereotypes as fact is wrong.
My Opinion but they’re not remote. America wanted to bother us, and “claim” our islands as us territories so you should know them. You should know guam. I doubt that you would know roda, but you should know the ones y’all “claimed”.
as a pacific islander from guam, it’s so empowering to see that i relate to these people. it’s honestly surprising and kind of exciting when anyone in the media mentions guam or any island in the pacific. it’s a struggle when i go out to the states and people ask me where i’m from or if i “live in a hut.” i never really saw how different i was to other people in terms of race because i grew up all my life in guam. but it was definitely shocking to go out to the states and realize i’m different.
Wouldn't, or more so, shouldn't Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders be compensated for these horrible acts that America and Britain did? Or is there not a parallel connection from the horrible acts done here in correlation to the American Indians? #JustAThought #lovetomyspecies #lovetomyearth #lovetomyuniverse #lovetoall #love
in Hawai'i, our own native people struggle to just live off of the opportunities we're given. Living in Hawai'i is expensive and living here is tough. I wish we could be compensated because my Hawaiian family owned land in many places but the government has ownership of it and it's hard to understand why we've been treated this way but no one wants to own up to these things and make a change in it.
yes. there are many people that should be compensated by Britain/America. but then i feel that much of what they have is a result of others suffering. if they compensate everyone they wont have much. it should happen but it wont.

Thank you buzzfeed for making this video. I'm Hawaiian and moved up here to Utah from the islands which was my home for many many years. When i moved up here and told other Mexicans and Caucasians that i was Hawaiian they would always ask things that they've always heard of and assumed the whole time. For example, did you have coconut trees? Do you know how to dance hula? Did you have a swimming pool in your backyard? How far away were you from the beach?' I noticed that more people need to acknowledge that Hawai'i is a HOME to a lot of people, with a very important history that we should NEVER forget. Not just a tourist place with nice beaches and tropical fruits. Anyways, thank you so so much for making these videos on our pacific islanders. It really means a lot to me and (im pretty sure) a whole lot of other people.

I came to this video since I needed a video source for an internist essay I am writing (that is due in 1 hour) I am writing the essay about my fondness of the time that I spent in a poly club. While I am NOT at all any sort of Polynesian or Melanesian; I joined because how empowered, graceful, and beautiful the women and dance were. I spent two years basically being the only white girl among many different kinds of people. I thought I learned a lot within those two years but, all I got say is dang all the crap Polynesian people went through between the 18th to 21st century; and they're still nice and humble. Whats not love? P.s. The part where they said "we always want to feed everybody"; OMG that was the truest statement when I was in Poly club. I never left a practice without some sort of food or water.

3. Just because I look black does not mean I'm African, I'm Melanesian. There's a difference.
#Wanesia #SouthPacifica
Wolf Diaries preach! 👏😝
OMG YES NUMBER 3! I CANNOT STRESS IT ENOUGH! I’m Papua new Guneian and the amount of times I get this!
YESS ! Do people not realize you can be black without being African? I feel like melanesians have it hardest out of all of the Pacific islanders because of the racism and colorism deeply embedded in to our cultures.
Yess this is so inportant!
Yeah i can relate to number 3 a lot I'm Fijian and people usually think I'm African or Samoan
I've met many Pacific Islanders in my life and I swear they are the nicest people ever they treat you like family as soon as you meet them it's crazy
Linzkinz This is very true
Linzkinz do you actually think we're nice?!
I've never met any of them but I would love to
I agree, I had yet to met any Pacific islanders until I worked New Zealand, I didn't know anyone when I arrived there but when I left, I had more than 30+ of my Polynesian friends and their families farewell my family and I, it was very emotional for my wife and I we will never forget their kindness and remain friends to this day.
I would love to meet at least one
Guillermo Marcelo De Santa Garcia Okay troll...
Thank yu....bt as she said our races are getting slim to none due to new commers bt I can't say that I hate new commers to our islands cause I'm also a child of a new commer and an islander..and I'm pretty sure every one could guess just right what half new commers i am(HALF KOREAN!!)😂😂
well there's no full blooded maoris left, so i think the same could easily happen to the others
+Patrina Pitman The plural of Maori is Maori, btw. I'd wager there are no full blooded Pakeha left either. Whenever people pull out this one it's usually to undermine Maori people in some way... you don't need to say it. Culture, remembering your whakapapa, passing on the language and the history is more important than being pure blood or some eugenics BS.
Described perfectly as "Minorities within a minority."
I just say you know "The Rock: Dwayne Johnson"? Yeah hes an islander like me, hes actually my uncle...

Oi auesa! i wonder who wrote tiss....

Its probz alexo
He’s all of our uncles lmao
The fact that you have seen Moana doesn't make you an expert on their culture... smh
Simon Goldstein
I'm pretty sure no one over the age of 12 thinks that
You would be surprised
Simon Goldstein 😂😂😂😂😂
Simon Goldstein it does actually. You saying that is discrimination against people who watch Disney films
Simon Goldstein HONESTLY
As a Samoan and a resident in Hawaii, I'm ecstatic that a social media outlet is taking the time to recognize the pacific island cultures and the hardships we've been and are still going through.
Same here! 👏
Theres a difference we didnt get sent to concentration camps
Hawaii is now hating on non natives as all the land is disappearing under new ownership the natives are now calling for the Monarchy to rule again separately from the USA they want to kick out non natives at that time. How's Hawaii life going for you as a non native? Any different treatment as you're Samoan/Polynesian?
C Purcell honestly, the people who want to kick out all the haole people are a minority, albeit a very loud one.
Samoans have no respect for people sometimes
Everytime someone asks me if I am Samoan, Hawaiian, Cook Island, Tongan, Nuiean, Rarotongan - I say "No those are my cousins. I am Māori"

Why do people always think of Polynesia when they think of pacific islands?
There’s also Melanesia and Micronesian islands don’t overlook us
^^ true Polynesians are the most known. You say “Samoan and Tongan”, people be like
“oh those people?”.
You say “Chuukese and Marshallese” and people be like
“Cookies and marshmallows?”
Exactly :(
Well, we don’t have people like Dwayne Johnson, Troy Polamalu, Jason Momoa, etc.

Hawaiians will be the majority again in Hawaiian- this will never happen to Hawaiians again
Deadass though haha
sipping_fish oil Tea really I’ve always found islanders are really nice
@@crispyrat2386 Generalisation is not good. I dont think ive met any bad islanders but that doesnt mean theres any bad ones. I do know that sometimes our behaviour is public nuisance for eg. Blasting islander songs in the middle of the night with a siren, Late night parties and what not.

FINALLY! A video about Pacific Islanders
Bomba_Boy123. They had no Maoris though
Bomba_Boy123 Probably weren't able to find any in time to make the video.
well the Maori people are actually not pacific islanders as they are native to New Zealand which although is in Polynesia, it is not in the pacific islands
Bomba_Boy123 you're wrong there already was one
Originally, before they came to New Zealand, they came from Hawaiki, which is deemed to be where all Polynesians originated from. But yeah, they are native to New Zealand.
I'm getting emotional watching this. I am not Pacific Islander but I feel very connected to them spiritually. Thank you for sharing their stories I loved this video.
Kiwi The Beauty as a fellow maori I feel the same.
❤️❤️❤️
Kiwi The Beauty its good to learn new things
When I think about Pacific Islanders I think if strong proud people
Dutch Christian Now thats true 💯
Don't forget loud (as a good thing)
Thank you! 💯 😇
I think of kava.
@@teddcuizon3964 oh yeah.. I forgot about France’s island territories. You right, you right. My mistake.
Well, if u didn’t know u probably did but Some American sugar planters overthrew the Queen (Queen Liliuokalani) and took over the islands and that’s how the Hawaiian islands are apart of the US. (What I learned from my school)
Oh, and some people from my school are related to Queen Liliuokalani! And I’m from kauai.
My impression of Pacific Islanders growing up in Australia, was a group of people who were strong minded, proud of their culture and valued family above everything else.
There is good and bad things in Polynesian culture even with family, it's hatred and drama but also love and deep care even if we don't like showing it to much

Me: .............. I'm from Orange County.
Cyrus Sitagata - Its funny how these racists like to tell people to go back where u came from, I'm assuming this person was white, next time tell Mr. Racist that HE should go back home...to europe!
And I ain't racist, I'm half white n half Hawaiian and live in Hawai'i, my mom is from the mainland, but I cannot stand when white people in the mainland pull that card, but when they do, people gotta remind them that America was a land of brown skin, not white, Fucken pilgrims!

i think u know what he meant
not justifying but the meaning was clear
I am pretty late but most of what a most Americans think about Hawaii is from advertisements and TV and stuff, and usually when companies want people to go on a vacation there they don't really go into the not so good stuff, otherwise people wouldn't want to go there, and that would hurt business, so you can't really blame the people themselves when the advertisers are the main ones making people think that is the case,
Also I don't really know anything about your friends being forced to move out, but chances are the white people (because yes, I know exactly what you mean by "haole") were willing to pay more and the landlord being a land lord wanted to make money off of someone else renting their land/living space, and so they kicked them out, not saying it was right, but business is business, and sometimes people get screwed over, also did the white person know people were already living there? Because if not then they may have been unaware of what they accidentally caused, if they did know then thats kind of on them, and they should have looked for a different house,
I doubt many people think Hawaii doesn't have a culture or a language, but the whole learning some island chain in the middle of the Pacific Ocean's culture thing isn't exactly on everyones to do list, and what they do know or think they know is again, because of advertisements,
EDIT: Just put "people" where it should have been, which now makes "the advertisers are the main ones making people think that is the case, "
It's Ya Boi Daniel i think everyone pays the same price to the land lords or whatever the land lords ask 🙄

As you can see most islanders don't have as much money as others do to go to NZ. Nah just kidding but I'm serious tho.
I'm from Guam. Just to have a widely known TH-cam channel and social media interview islanders and their options or views and even out history makes me happy to know that people will now know that my culture exists.

Same, I told someone I'm Tongan and Samoan and they thought that my mom was Moana

LMAAOAOAOA THEY ALWAYS SAY THAT
I was never taught about the pacific islands so I took it upon myself and learnt about it.
I'm a Samoan myself and I love this!!! thank you buzz feed for giving our people a voice 😭

pretty much if you're from California its called Californians, new york = new yorkers etc. but calling someone who lives in hawaii; hawaiian is kind of wrong cause hawaiian is a race.

+Dominic Scalia they definitely weren't trying to, but they did give the Hawaiians diseases and stuff, which sucks for them, but it's not like it was intentional,
"Pacific islander " isnt a race💁
@Dominic Scalia In New Zealand the Maori language was nearly wiped out not long ago they were banned from speaking Maori. In New Zealand around 16% of the population are Maori.
@Dominic Scalia Totally agree bro. Saying destroyed is pretty inaccurate. I mean Europeans basically developed many pacific islands and even today some islands still use the infrastructure built by Europeans.
I am a Pacific Islander from West Papua which is in the same land as Papua New Guinea but not the same country, we are just a neighbour. real talk tho what white people did to the natives is really fucked up
alright since some people think I'm only talking about Pacific Islanders, I mean _all natives_

I grew up in a little town called Kekaha on the west side of the island of Kaua'i. Many of my neighbors were 100% Hawaiian and more importantly my mom's dad ~ my grandpa~was 100%native Hawaiian.
It's incredibly rare for me to relate to a BuzzFeed video so often. But this is so nice, as a Polynesian (Genuinely Native Hawaiian).

AlatAMelanin bruh no we didn’t. We just migrated, like years before colonizers were even a thing.
For all my poly people, dont let the lands of polynesia segregate us as a people because we are one people. Polynesians
Cringed when I saw "Asian Pacific Islander". Please, it's two different categories.
I think many people, especially in the US, genuinely think they're the same thing. Maybe because they get grouped together in data sets and for statistical reports? I had an American friend once comment that I was a certain way "because you're Asian." I was like.. "uh, Asian? Since when?" (I'm half maori)
Pacific islanders are basically just asians and blacks mixed together. Like looking at our background you can see that we are descendants from asians
I cringed as well. Lol!
Soso Notchurbusiness lol even if its not true, blasian kids really do look a bit pacific islanderish

I am not a pacific islander but I have intense desires to learn more about your cultures because there is so much to it and it's so complex and I recently read about Captain Cook it's absolutely heartbreaking to see what colonialism has done and is still doing to indigenous cultures.
“I’m from Guam”
“Do you guys speak English?”
🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
(I cried when I watched this)
Soak Me in You need to come to NZ lol
prolly because it doesnt in american yall literally have no connections to the states whatsoever. gmfu
Never thought I would see chamorro people on buzzfeed😳 Im glad more people are getting to know who my people are❤️❤️❤️
FILIPINOS ARE NOT POLYNESIAN
maleselino salt. Who said that they were?
maleselino salt anyone who was filipino in this video had poly mixed in.
Cause a lot of Polynesians have some kind of Asian mixed in haha :)
+georgizz Nah, we don't
god bless you Pacific islanders💙 youre cultures are so fascinating and you are all so unique& beautiful!
I pray that you dont fade away, it Would be a big lost!
I love learning of other cultures this is really an amazing video I don't care if they reposted it. Still important.
No Melanesian representation fiji/vanuatu/solomon islands in this video about "pacific islanders"

a struggle of being Polynesian, trying to explain to people where Samoa is.. it usually just ends up in me saying "you know New Zealand?! Oh yeap, of course you do, well it's right near there".. close enough I guess o_o?
Yeah people are clueless.
Ninja Chicken that's funny cos I'm from Kiribati and currently living in NZ and even they dont know where Kiribati is.. lmagine if I go to America?
Hafa adai! This video is spot on. I was born and raised in TN but my family is from Guam. I can't tell you how many times I've had to explain to people that my family is not from Guatemala , but from Guam.
It's unreasonable to expect people to know every remote island in the pacific..
My Opinion We live in a world where there's internet. People shouldn't be stereotyping cultures. To be curious is fine, but to take stereotypes as fact is wrong.
Well basically every pacific islander can be traced to being related. hell thats how i met 80 of my cousins in school

#JustAThought

#lovetomyspecies In New Zealand only now are we starting to get our land back.
in Hawai'i, our own native people struggle to just live off of the opportunities we're given. Living in Hawai'i is expensive and living here is tough. I wish we could be compensated because my Hawaiian family owned land in many places but the government has ownership of it and it's hard to understand why we've been treated this way but no one wants to own up to these things and make a change in it.
Kahealani Phillips agreed
yes. there are many people that should be compensated by Britain/America. but then i feel that much of what they have is a result of others suffering. if they compensate everyone they wont have much. it should happen but it wont.

Thank you BuzzFeed to enable Pacific islanders voices to be heard. From a suscriber from Tahiti living in Switzerland.
I came to this video since I needed a video source for an internist essay I am writing (that is due in 1 hour)
I am writing the essay about my fondness of the time that I spent in a poly club.
