As a Samoan, I hate seeing people getting offended on MY behalf. I don't know a single Polynesian who got offended by Moana. It was nice seeing aspects of my culture in a Disney movie.
Maori here. Completely agree with you! I think we of these cultures sourced understand it was a rep of the shared folklore of our peoples and as such, is a blend. I personally enjoyed it and now is one of my favourite movies.
Maori/Hawaiian here also, thinking HEY it's just a movie for kids, not a documentary. Have a little fun, be lighthearted. Stop politicizing everything.
I'm Polynesian and i loved the movie. It incorporates so many aspects of our Polynesian cultures. I don't know of anyone being offended by the movie. As for maui's size, most polynesians are solid built anyway.
Even though he is form is big and opposing his attitude and the way he make sure over a situation you know he's not a bad guy at all he's a teddy bear his presence I would think is a Beacon of Hope for the Polynesian people he's what they think of a strong man not a monster Maui's enemies might see him as intimidating and that's a good thing but when the Polynesian people look at him they see a friend I guess it was hard to put that on paper and render it into a CGI model but for what we got it's pretty damn close and I can see why they did that model it's a hell of a lot better than the real life Aladdin with Will Smith as the genie
If they stuck with the original Maui it would have been too easy to see him as a love interest for Moana instead of the big bro figure he ended up as in the movie, in a movie where they obviously wanted to eschew romance amd focus on Moana coming into her own
I don't know what you just said but all I know is that the creators weren't interested in Moana's love life with Maui (meaning they weren't bothered about Moana and Maui and any affection they've showed towards each other. They just wanted them to be good pals and help restore the heart of te fiti, nothing else). But if you're comment was literally talking bout what I just said then good on you :)
@@shannay2003 he meant that the public consumer’s assumption would have gone to Maui and Moana being a couple had they drawn Maui the way everyone “prefers”…its better that they made him more cartoony. its visual communication on the animators part
Yes of course you're right, If they stuck with the original Maui it would have been too easy to see him as a love interest for Moana, especially for the grownups but what about the kids? Want them to grow up so fast like in the movie? Man... they're going to hate their life in real-time, its a child thing let them enjoy. Thanks it was not Acquaman for the kids.😂😂🤣
This is ridiculous. As a Polynesian myself I was so excited for this movie and it did not disappoint! I literally cried at how beautiful it was. I would really love to see actual comments of offended people in the video and that would make this video more convincing for me but these are all sounding like opinions from people that just love to be offended 🙄.
As a person who is Maori. Not all stories have to be accurate towards the mythologies of the hero everyone has their own description of how Maui looks. But it really is an honor to see disney finally showing polynesian culture to the world.
it's just like Hercules (though no one makes a fuss about this because no one believes about these Greek Gods and Goddesses nowadays) but, what if Aphrodite's waist was actually 12 inches (in Greek Mythology) but in the movie Hercules you can see that her waist is at least 1 or 2 inches. No harsh feelings though, they should be glad that they added Maori culture in the movie Moana. It's better than nothing :/
Not to mention his stories varied between all of us polynesians. Sina and the eel is only in Samoa I believe. In Hawaii he climbed to the top of Hāleakala to lasso the sun because he was always rushing across the sky.
They could have included Melanesian and Micronesian cultures, considering the movie isn't even strictly based on a single Poly Island. I know Maui is a Poly thing, but at least add minor references to us, Disney, cause I know full well that you aren't going to make a whole movie about Micros and Melans 😥
@@yeetfeet731 I mean all 3 nesian cultures are really distinct from one another. All were isolated for tens of thousands of years. It would’ve been a better Disney movie as a Micronesian culture probably since Polynesian culture irl was heavily warrior centered and pretty brutal
As a Samoan Maori I wasn't offended. Sure Maui doesn't look like that but my judgement disappeared as soon as that first song kicked off. Our people and our culture front and centre in a Disney Film?! I never thought it'd happen in my lifetime. I cried twice because of Te Vaka's songs.
After all it's a kids movie. I'm from Greece and when they made Hercules many people had doubts too. Here, everywhere that you see a drawing or a statue of him, he's naked. Could you imagine Disney making a story with a naked man? 😂😂
Yeah as a Hawaiian I’m all for Moana. It was nice to see the blend of different Polynesian cultures brought to the Disney world. It’s a family film not a Historical documentary lol
And Disney has been known to take historical stories and modify them into a story for children. The original fables of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, and others are bloody and horrific with bad endings.
Random245 Random245 it doesn’t really matter if they made one about The Polynesian culture , it matters if they stay truthful to the actual story line. I am Polynesian too but it doesn’t mean that they should portrait the culture as something different
I'm Hawaiian and I would just like to say that mainlanders get so offended for us when most of the other Hawaiians (& other Polynesians) don't really care. It's also called an *adaptation* for a reason, it's not supposed to be parallel with the actual story. And the people here make games of offending people (it really is funny). SJW's are usually the butts of the jokes where I come from, Polynesians have thick skin, they don't need foreigners to defend them. About the female chief thing, here in Hawai'i, King Kamehameha actually knocked off a few of them when taking over the islands so that there would be no one going for revenge when he killed off the males. However, some sources say otherwise, I'm only sharing what I learned.
thank you for this! i'm just a white girl from the usa, but thank you for this. i can see a lot of hawaiian people in the comments getting so offended. disney's intent wasn't to be malicious, and strong people like you can see that.
Do you want a little history lesson on female leaders and warriors in Hawai'i? Take it as a 'thank you for the compliment' from me (Not really a lesson, more of like a fun fact).
Alright, I'm going to make this quick though: Fun Fact #1: Like I said in my original comment, there were female chiefs that Kamehameha had bumped off first. Most of these stories are told orally. The one who told me this piece of information is Lopaka Kapanui, the successor of Glen Grant. He told me this on one of his ghost tours that I went on to celebrate my birthday. We were at the Pali when he told us this along with other scary stories. I highly recommend going to one of his tours when visiting, beware of the ghosts. Fun Fact #2: Along with female chiefs, female warriors were also among Kamehameha's ranks. Fun Fact#3: Almost everyone on Hawai'i is related to royalty, making us one big family. My (idk how many great's) grandmother was the cousin of Kamehameha, don't know if she was on his side though, all that I know is that she married my (idk how many great's) grandfather, a man from Wales, and had many children.
5:57 if they stuck to the 'real story', they wouldn't be able to present the movie to a young audience. It's Disney, they obviously needed to make it more appealing to children.
They could have at least got their pronunciations correct. It’s extremely white washed in general, why can’t they ever cast voice actors who are from the country their making the movie about 🤷♀️
I'm not Polynesian, just a regular 58 year old woman.I waited years to watch Moana because I wasn't impressed with the previews and had become a bit discouraged with Disney after The Lion King.It was great and later movies fell a little flat afterward. After watching Moana with my granddaughter and her brothers,I could have kicked myself.I absolutely loved it and went out and bought it.We watch it often, and every time it seems even better. The chicken by the way is adorable, showing how compassion for what seems hopeless might just be the most important thing you ever do.The songs are great, the story is inspiring and funny!Well done!!!💖💖💖
well i saw him as a fat guy just like the fat poly in the states :) when i came from the islands to the states, people don't know my true ethnicity coz i'm not the typical Samoan or Tongan fat kid in school :)
@@rachelhinton. if you go to the islands you will see muscular and athletics guys and then you will see disney Maui who i will confidently tell you that he is fat :D I like the movie either way though fat Maui or not :) Why can't he look like MOana's father though lol
I'm polynesian and i believe disney did a good job, its a KIDS MOVIE of course they cant put the true events/stories of Maui n our Polynesian mythology because it would scare the poor kids away!!! 😂😂😂 i love Moana and love how she too like Merida and Mulan dont need a prince in order to get things done! They represent strong independent young girls/women, so boo to all the sensitive people out there, I'm Team Moana alwayssss
@Mestre Gautier how are they lying? Polynesians were voyagers, theres even belief that we may have been the first to have discover the Americas... and nothing is wrong with me I'm doing just fine thank you, if you don't agree with me thats fine, isn't going to bother me, i respect your opinion, so respect mine, thanks 👍
I don't see why kids can't watch what they want the only thing I won't want my kids watching is porn I mean that's obvious nobody would want there kids watching it
I’m a Pacific Islander. I’m just happy that we finally had some Polynesian/ Pacific Islander recognition in a movie, and that they got traditional attire, food, and living quite accurately shown. If you’re not from the islands and is making a huge thing about a culture that you don’t even know about and not even from, just leave it to us to decide. Maui’s body type is very common in the islands, since Pacific Islanders tend to have bigger builds than other races, so it’s not that offensive.
I'm of Maori and Cook Island decent (Polynesia) and I am not offended by how Disney portrayed Maui or the film as a whole. Most of us Polynesians think that this movie was amazing and we are glad our culture has been shared.
@Jeri Brown no. my point was indicated at the comment above illustrating that writers of polynesian hisotry have not been exactly accurate and the stories at your parents were taught in school was probably religious propoganda. there is more to this than the portrayal and representation of Maui and the Polynesian culture itself. its a large impact embedded into our society to just accept how things are portrayed without any care in the facts or discretion of the creator. TW is a fantastic DIRECTOR - not historian. There is a difference when film is involved, especially when aimed to entertain children.
Many Islanders are naturally pretty big, and muscular as their bodies have evolved to store lots of energy for voyages through the ocean. Its good to normalise this body shape as it has a lack of representation on western screens.
Polys are big strong people. That's why we was happy when they made Maui Bigg lol. Half of my family look like Maui. Love this cartoon and everything about it. Made me miss home and our culture...
Lu Moheloa One of my best friends is Polynesian. His stature is SO MUCH like Maui. Polynesians, in my opinion, are the most beautiful people. Like stunning.
Hey. How come nobody is mentioning Tafiti. What is she? Chopped Liver? She didn't kill Moana and Maui. You have to give her that. When you make Tafiti mad, you better watch out boyfriend!
I'm ethnically from Fiji, first generation American, raised in Hawai'i. I cried tears of joy most of the way through my first screening with my kids because I was so thankful that they'd have such a beautiful representation of their culture in the mainstream. I wish I'd had that as a kid. I think it would have helped me take more pride in my culture, instead of just trying to fit in as an All-American kid. Every Pacific Islander I know (first hand accounts from Samoan, Tongan, Tahitian, Fijian, Maori, Hawaiian, Filipino people) absolutely love Moana. And I don't know who you're quoting, but I personally love that they used some of the biggest Polynesian voice actors for main roles in the film and the real Polynesian band Te Vaka to write some of the music and sing as the "voices of the choir" you referenced. We really could not have asked for more. Especially considering Disney's track record with Pocahontas and Aladdin.
Why can't you be All American and still be ethnically Fijian? America is a culture and country not an ethnicity or race. Assimilation is the strength of America, not a weakness of where you come from
Maybe I could have, but I didn't have that understanding as a child AND, which is my point here, there was no mainstream representation of our culture that allowed me (or my friends) to feel like being me was an acceptable way of being. Black and hispanic communities have a ton of positive representation in American media. Even Asians (who we now talk about having the worst media representation) have far more than Pacific Islanders. There are three Pacific Islander movie stars (if you count Keanu Reeves) but NONE of them have ever played a Polynesian in any of their films before now with The Rock playing Maui (as a cartoon) and Jason Momoa playing Aquaman (a comic book character). They can't be themselves and they are movie stars. They are passing, trying to be All-American. When I moved from Hawai'i to the mainland I felt very different, I was definitely treated as "other" ... Living in predominantly white communities in Idaho and Utah, nobody in my schools had ever even heard of Fiji, so I started telling people I was Hawaiian (I just found out that my daughter's Tongan friend does the same thing now). When I moved to California everyone assumed I was Mexican. Later in life when I got into college and grew a beard, people assumed I was Middle Eastern. You look at a successful, working, Polynesian actor like Cliff Curtis and it's the same thing. Outside of New Zealand (where there is a strong Māori film community) he plays characters like Lt. Cortez (Mexican), Dr. Sinja (Indian), Amir Abdulah (Iraqi). He's ambiguously brown and it doesn't matter. But it does matter. Culture matters. I love the ideal of America as a melting pot, but it's far from the reality of America. And a melting pot is not really meant to be assimilation, anyway. It's mean to be a joining of cultures. For that to happen, you have to know my culture too. Also, did Eurpoeans assimilate to the diverse cultures of Native American tribes or did they wipe out tens of millions of people, try to strip people of their religion and language, move them out into the desert and take their land? How were the Irish or the Italians or the Jews treated when they came to America? The ideal is beautiful and worth striving for, but it's never fully existed.
Joshua Ligairi I feel the same about so many of those aspects. What the US ought to be and how there ought to be better representation of all ethnicities in our films, literature, art and music. That is the beautiful potential that the US has and that it has slowly been getting better about. It is unfortunate that people are made to feel like “others.” Interesting thing for me growing up was that I actually was way more curious about the cultures of those who looked different from me than having pride in my ethnicity. Whatever my ethnicity meant. I just never understood why people wouldn’t want to learn about others and find commonalities as humans and to value differences and appreciate one another. By the way, I lived in O’ahu for a couple years when I was a kid. I miss the island often. I miss Makapu’u and Laie. You mentioned that you lived in Utah as well? Me too. What part? And I agree-a super homogenous white community, which is why I had a hard time there. But, still a pretty large Polynesian community there compare to where I live now (most Virginians I speak to say they are not sure if they have met any Polynesians, weirdly enough). P.s. The Philippines is technically Asia and actually has a very interesting melting pot of ethnic history. The most notable link of Filipinos to Polynesians is that Tagalog and many of the other Philippine dialects are of the same Austronesian family of languages to which Polynesian languages also belong. But ethnically speaking, the Philippines heritage mainly consists of a mix of Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, and Spanish.
+Puting Pinoy - Yeah, the (American) Filipinos I know often disagree about whether they consider themselves Asians or Pacific Islanders. Technically, they are both, right? Not only because of the Austronesian connection, but also because all of the seas that surround the Philippines are part of the Pacific Ocean. I only mentioned Filipinos in my comment because a lot of the complaints referenced in this video came from non-Polynesian Pacific Islanders (before the film's release) who felt that they weren't going to be represented by the characters in Moana. But also, I just saw this Moana theory that mentions Moana's Grandma is based on a Tagalog word/God. Interesting! bit.ly/2N608Q5 The filmmakers have said they were primarily focused on Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa but we definitely see influences from all over the Pacific including Cook Islands and Aotearoa ... so it's interesting that there may be a Philippines connection as well.
Absolutely loved Moana! I'm a pacific islander and it was such an incredible feeling to see a girl who reminded me of me on Disney as a princess! I watched the way her hair flowed in wind in 1 scene and cried because that was exactly how my hair looked!
This makes me smile so bigger ☺ you know I love when people are so happy like thissssss like it is something that people of colors have been saying for 1000s of years treat us with the same respect 🙏 ❤
Lenysea and vgargioni+ This is why several Polynesians such as me go through the comments to find offended white people, who have no idea what they're talking about. Care to join?
As a foreigner, I can't quite understand, are you on our side or this is sarcasm. To me, who was born on a different continent, in a different country with a different culture, it's interesting to learn about other cultures, but when it comes to a cartoon, I am not sure if it must correspond to the originals. Those, who are interested to learn more authentic facts can do their research and not try to stir up drama and divisions. It's plenty of those in the world...
See... I'm Brazilian. Have you ever seen a movie called Rio? There are quite a few different things too. Going a little deeper, ever heard of Cannibal Holocaust? Anaconda? Tourists? Mr. Magoo? Lambada? See, some movies said that in Brazil we speak Spanish, instead of Portuguese. I think you understand my point, right? So yes, they are people who have nothing better to do and who are looking for things to bother and complain. Are you disturbed by half a dozen changes in a children's movie? Go make a documentary about the theme.
Us polys are not offended, we're thankful that people from all around the world now know that we exist & see how beautiful our culture is. I think you're the only one offended admin lol
Admin is not speaking for themself but for others and they are a neutral third party. They even said "but some people were offended" and referenced to people interviewed by buzzfeed. You don't speak for anyone else but yourself.
Amen! As a fellow poly and all of my family I've talked with, the only thing they were annoyed about was grandma Tala's crack about reincarnation. That's an Asian thing, not a Polynesian thing. But even with that, they weren't offended, just confused as to why it was mentioned like that. 👍 cheehoo!
I'm Polynesian and I'm fine with Maui's look, it's just a bit different because we all grew up on the stories and kids books of him being strong and fit. But I'm okay with it :)
So there are TWO categories of people you talked about at the end- A) People that are OFFENDED by Moana and how they butchered the Polynesian culture and B) Polynesians and what they thought about it.... Could everyone in group A PLEASE STOP being offended FOR me (POLYNESIAN)? People are getting the wrong idea about who is actually offended by this movie. I am Samoan. Tattoos are our thing. Why would I be offended? A group of creative people took the time to understand AND appreciate our culture enough to bring it to the big screen. And NO, I don't speak for ALL Polynesians because guess what? We are HUMAN... we are all different! but if you do not know about being Polynesian then please... stop speaking up for OR against this movie in MY STEAD.
taisou 72 I really like your comment and I gotta say that you got the better movie I am Native American and the movie that was supposed to be displaying our culture wasn’t historically accurate at all it was a nice love story but I had a slight problem only because it was not accurate with history
thank you! and oh... sorry haha. Here's the thing tho... i don't even mind if people DO get offended, but i just want them to do it for things they DO understand and DO know about. I'm just one island boy. I don't even speak for my community, just from my own experiences. But if i don't represent the collective voice of our Polynesian community how can others?
Lisa Dooley I completely understand your dislike for the plot change in Pocahontas, but considering that it is supposed to be a children's movie, I think Disney was limited with what they could do with the story.
Y’all I’m Tongan and Samoan and honestly I’m not offended tbh Maui looks like most my uncles. What gets most Polynesians pissed is when people who know nothing of our culture get offended.
sienna _lmao well in my culture which is hawaiian, they made almost all of Maui’s story different , which is optional since we all have different stories about him
Polynesian here (Tongan), I can say that my family and many of my Poly friends enjoyed it at the fullest. Maui's size wasn't an exaggeration either, you can go to Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Hawaii, ETC and find at least 20 people who are built like him.
Pretty sure they intentionally didn't to make Maui look like a teenager to make it clear that there was not going to be any Moana/Maui relationship subplot--which, creatively speaking, was a good dramatic choice because it kept the focus on her and her growth as an independent woman and character and made the relationship clearly more brother/sisterly and not a "will they/won't they kiss" one. It was artistic license used to make a better dramatic story, not one to dismiss or ignore the culture of origin.
Interesting theory NekoMouser. I like that thought that if Maui was a teenager, he would have turned into a love interest, given Disney's past of princess romances
“They cut a scene of Moana throwing a temper tantrum and throwing coconuts because it was offensive.” This was because the islanders they talked to told them that it was. The coconut came from the island, and by throwing it, you were wasting a valuable resource and it was disrespectful. So they changed it to the stick throwing. It got the point across without being disrespectful. *Maui is not overweight.* I will say it again. *MAUI. IS. NOT. OVERWEIGHT.* He is built for power and strength, and is modeled similarly to the other males in the movie. He is larger, yes, than Moana’s father, but that doesn’t mean he is overweight. If you watch him closely, and watch the way the skin moves (kinda creepy, I know), you can see it’s muscle. We, as a society, expect strong to look slim and and have a six pack and huge muscles. The way Maui is built is actually stronger, and many Polynesians are built like that. Edit: Maui is also partly based on Dwayne Johnson, who is Pacific Islander. Moana can’t become chief, because it’s part of the culture. Oh well, suck it up. Most of the things in this video can be understood by looking at the bonus features and the making of clips. There’s an abundance of them, and they explain things really well. Also, confused why you used a picture of the Hawaiian volcano Goddess, Pele, to represent Moana. There were probably more things in the video I could address. Edit: Didn't expect this to get so popular, so thank you- but I do want to say that I am still lacking information and not everyone views the movie the same way. I am not Pacific Islander myself, but I do know a lot of the culture and I have family who lives in Hawaii and a lot of her neighbors and I have talked for a long time about cultural stuff. I can try to address more things if anyone has any questions. And keep in mind that Disney didn't specify a specific Pacific island culture. If they were to do a movie for each culture, there would be hundreds. They did their best to create a mix of all to represent as much as possible as correctly as possible. They even had a board of people that they would talk to about the culture and confirm or deny a point. Maui isn't from any specific culture, so he may look one way in one story from Samoa, and he may look a totally different way in one from Tahiti. And it's Disney. They're going to take some creative freedom. I personally think they did a good job with representing a people. Others may not think so. And that's okay.
Exactly! And they should have researched the fact that Maui is also an island, and I personally think that the end of the movie he should have turned into Maui, the island. It's like a bad character turning good. And I think that the evil lava monster was in fact represented by Pele, which is why they used that. But to represent Moana? Moana literally means Ocean! They really need to research who Pele was. The hair does not mean anything!
And don't forget that Maui in the Disney version is made in the image of Dwayne Johnsons grandpa who came from Samoa and was a wrestler. And Dwayne is the one doing Mauis voice so thats kinda cool :O Which is why Maui is not overweight but just strong
What? Maui isn't overweight it is literaly muscle. Also the story isn't about Maui it's about Moana's and there isn't a real myth or legend about Moana meaning that you can't say that Maui wasn't portrayed right. What if he is older here than in the legend
I am Maori and what we learn in class and through my Maori family is that Maori was had muscles but he was not big like in Moana, even if he is older he wouldn’t be fat like in the movie
I'm half Tongan and half Native American and I loved the movie. Disney didn't really do anything differently than what they did with every other movie. The good thing is that they actually researched stuff and learned something new.
Izzy yeah and thank god they didn't! otherwise we would have movies about a 14 year old getting married and a lost in the woods Eugene with no eyes on his face
And Ariel who ends up killing herself, or Aurora who is assaulted in her sleep, or Peter Pan who kills the Lost Boys... I think Disney is overall doing a great job at introducing stories to kids, even if some of them are not the same as the real stories.
MyrthexLatoya IKR, thank you! Some A.holes just never think about the CHILDREN! They're just thinking about their own wants and desires. Everything Disney has done has always been for the Children, and I applaud them for it. 👏
Joseph Vitale your people believe in god i dont know any samoan that knows about their own gods before colonisation it was forced upon you and your people did nothing to stop it.
@@etaks420NZ aye first of all chill and second of all we Samoans used to all believe in one good named tagaloa, but then we we're all mostly converted into christians in the 1800's ufa.
@@etaks420NZ of course there's Tagaloa (creator god), Papa (Earth godess), Nafanua (warrior godess), Vavau (god of peace) Gege ( Demon hunter) Ti'i Ti'i in Samoa and in Hawaii Maui Tiki Tiki (Samoa's version of Maui) Pili (black lizard god son of Tagaloa) Sina (godess of love and fertility) Lesa ( godess of agriculture) Taema & Tilafaiga (deities of tatau) etc.
This video is not even accurate. Maui was changed from being bald because the committee of Polynesian people who the filmmakers consulted to ensure their movie portrayed Polynesian culture in a respectful way asked them to change this. Yes, the filmmakers had Polynesian people advising them on every aspect of the story just to ensure that Polynesians would like the film (and they overwhelmingly did). So the film did not create cultural outrage, it was the exact opposite.
Hey as a Samoan I was no way offended by the movie, Maui looked good.. A true Thick boi👌. The animation was breath taking and the art work....Disney did exceptionally well with this one.. 9.5/10..❤👌
I BUY POWER Hello, this is kind of random but I was wondering if i could ask you: the way that Tikis are portrayed in video games, art, and some films, and how tourists buy them, do you consider that offensive at all, or is it okay? I was just wondering, because I love tikis and in certain video games such as Spyro, tikis often appear in some of the island levels, and while I personally love seeing them there, I was wondering what your opinion about that is since you are polynesian. Thank you.
Danny Boy, Thank you very much for taking the time to explain that to me. I'm very relieved to know that my enjoyment of Tikis, and Tikis being part of pop culture in general, isn't considered offensive. (I have quite a few of them in my house because I love them, lol) I did read that Tikis originated from Maori culture, but I wasn't sure how deeply rooted their significance still is within their culture or others today. I surely hope that Maori people also feel the same way you do in regards to other people enjoying island-derived things. 💛🏝
As someone who is Native Hawaiian and been raised with the culture, this video has very little substance to go on. Everything sounds like people finding the smallest things to dislike the movie. I take it as creative liberties that didnt veer off too much from source material, but it wasnt so off that I would consider it offensive.
Kalaninui Akau, Are you a parent? How old are you? Do you know the whole authentic story by heart not for to recite it but to tell it or correct someone if they get part wrong? Do you have grandkids? Reason for my guestions is too many natives have lost their culture or a great part of it, plus younger generations see moving from tribal to mainstream beliefs as progress and because of misinformation!!! If you have kids just old enough that this movie interested them and you had already told them the story months before and then they see this, they will guestion what you taught them! See it as insignificant and maybe not even tell their children!! That's how they seep in, they already have them in school, and I bet Hawaiin history only goes back to the colonial days!!! Just like US mainland history!!! And many other histories!!! Whether the story is real or not there are large important parts of your history there!!! So if for no other reason treat this hopefully like you do all other man's lies, there is no santa claus, no tooth fairy, no easter bunny, this and this about that story are true, that part is what our ancestors believed.....lest you lose the rest of your heritage in a few more generations!!!! Their goal is to lure all people away from good bit by bit! If a child thinks a parent lied once how do they know when to trust you and not those who seem so good!!! I love my GOD, and I love my people, who lived more in peace for hundreds of years than we of present day have for even one generation and ai know Polynesians did as well!!!!! Now granted majority of any government is nothing but corrupt as are the people we dont see who order them around and not the majority of people, but most big corporations are in business with them just as much as the gov cronies!!! Even school is meant to seperate families, so they can manipulate the children, one, put a baracade up between parent and child, two and to get religion as far from them as possible, three, to take their culrutre from them, four, and even to take parental rights away!!! If a person wants to study religion it should be an option!!! They feed everyone non religion, ie. Darwinism, evolution!!! It isn't so much as artistic license as it is the actual intent and the damage the lies or artictic leans can cause within one's culture!!! It is true it is up to the parents, but ask yourself this, one if you are young and your parents came and said don't take the kids, it will cause them to doubt you, or will cause them to not take our traditions as serious, would you listen? Or if you are old enough you know the answer is no!!! Many many natives on the mainland... the men were arrested for two years, their kids sent to boarding schools while the wives were left to care for themselves!!! How close do you think those family units were after that? How many kids do you think stuck around after 18? How many stuck around when no one wanted electricity because they believed by the old ways, which was to live as humbly as possible and not get lazy! Plus they had their prophesies, which told them the white man would come the railway, the highways among other things, a large black snake, the dakota pipeline is happening now! There is only one left before the end of this world into the next! Same as the egyptians and many other cultures believed and there are atleast 9 if memory serves me right so I left quite a few out!!! But so far everyone has happened and everytime they warn beforehand that if they do it's marking time on the clock!!! Is there anything like that being glossed over in this movie or lied about, and is the turtle/tortouse part of the native stories from the mainland??? How many young men and women go into their first time of sex thinking the wrong things because they listened to the stories told around school from so and soes friend or sibling who heard it from their sibling and on and on but no one knew what they were talking about because most of it was lies or bragdociousness(lies about it being this or that trying appear to know more or better or having done something rather than nothing). So how many Polynesien children will guestion their parents after seeing it, or won't and believe them liars? How many might remeber the movie because its on their shelf and forget the true story in their age or whatever and lose who they really are or their connection to GOD!!! Because I believe in original form in every nation their religious beliefs start with GOD, not the water downed human versions, which even christianity is!!! The bible says do not take from or add to it and we already know of at least 4 books missing!!! More satan manipulated evil!!!
Queen Liliuokalani (1838-1917) was the last sovereign of the Kamehameha dynasty, which had ruled a unified Hawaiian kingdom since 1810. Born Lydia Kamakaeha, she became crown princess in 1877, after the death of her youngest brother made her the heir apparent to her elder brother, King Kalakaua.
I think it's actually good that children are given chances to question their beliefs every once and then. You don't want them to be sponges that just soak in doctrine that their parents tell them - it's important that they grow into independent humans. They'll figure out if they want to stick with the parents' doctrine or refuse it. Personally, I grew up with Christianity, but after a few times of questioning chances, I made the decision that I would not be a Christian anymore. If as you say, this movie can provide the chance to question one's beliefs, I think it's doing a good job.
People should stop being offended at every little thing. I've got news for those offended by the things in Moana...most Disney films are not accurate. The Little Mermaid for example...she didn't get the Prince; in the original story she ended up as sea foam. Cinderella's stepsisters met a gruesome end. Rapunzel's prince was blinded and they are separated for several years. In one version Rapunzel is pregnant. Disney films were never meant to be accurate. They were meant to take you away into a fairy tale with a happy ending. Nowadays everything MUST be accurate or risk offending a MINORITY of people. Because lets face it, the majority of us liked Moana and didn't have a problem with how Maui looked. Nor are the majority of us going to go out and read about Maui to make sure he was portrayed correctly in the film. I also doubt very much that Disney meant anything offensive by adding in the "evil" coconuts. They couldn't put white man into the film since Moana is supposed to take place BEFORE Captain Cook found the islands of Hawai'i so can't we all just enjoy a Disney film and stop being offended if they didn't get something "right"? It's just a MOVIE, a story based on a Hawaiian God. It's not supposed to be accurate.
Nora Dennis also the sleeping beauty was raped when she was asleep by the prince and then he left her there, and her child died inside her, all the children stories are so fuckin creepy...and I think disney wants to make them more children friendly and yeah I think they are sometimes a little bit ignorant but Idk if they are racist like some people say
I mean I'm an Islander myself (Melanesian) & I've friends who're Polynesians but they weren't offended at all! We loved Moana! Idk why she even have to make thid video in the first place! Idk who are the Polynesian ppl that she came in contact with that were "offended " but the people in my circle were actually excited and loved the movie. This video was pointless tbh!
thats exactly what i was thinking. most men i know from my island are fucking humungous. they're big boned and quite intimidating. weird how most of the people complaining about issues like character image in a DISNEY movie are not even Polynesian lmfao
that is so funny! i have one too: 1300's: i'm riding a horse 1800's: i'm riding on a train 1900's: i'm driving a car 2000's: i make shit and unfunny comments that i stole on the internet to express how superior i am to all those "offended" people. real comedy gold
im not tripping, but the ones that were tripping, were mad becuz they portrayed the legend myth Maui as big, when he was known as fit built...there not tripping about Polynesias being big, their tripping that they portrayed the legend Maui as big, when he wasnt known as big, thats why
My husband is Samoan, and he is broad across his shoulders. And it was nice to see the tattoos they used for the men are like the ones Samoan men get done, and probably the other islands in the Pacific have a similar style of tattooing too.
I am Polynesian Specifically Samoan and Cook islander. I grew up in New Zealand learning about Maui in school. I was not at all offended by Maui being bigger. I was just annoyed because I grew up with him being fit and strong, it would be like making red riding hood wear a blue hood. I was happy with the casting. People from New Zealand, Auli'i being Hawaiian and Duh! The Rock being Samoan. That costume thing I was like "meh" to be honest. But yeah overall I was happy with how it turned out.
He was still fit and strong, just bigger, Ive seen a post that compares Maui’s physique to strongest men in the world, who do have a more ‘fat’ makeup than the likes of bodybuilders, whose physique is more for show
In books I've read since I was a child that were adapted from the stories passed down through words. Maui in the illustrations had more of a like say Green Lantern physique and not Shazam or Captain America and not hulk.
My thoughts exactly, I got the feeling that all of this happened AFTER Maui's hay-day so he should appear more adult. I loved that he felt like the 40-year old guy reliving is HS glory days. Maybe that's why he wasn't skinny in the movie?
I liked that Maui was an older "mentor" type character instead of a teenage boy. It also eliminated the possibility of a romance developing which would have been so boring.
DragonBoss 2009 from what I've been taught throughout my life most of these facts are true. however they did get a few small details on the myths about Maui incorrect.
Also they needed to make it family/kids friendly. Besides, here’s my two cents about the movie and Maui... I love this movie for the beauty of it, colors, music scenery, funny scenes and sad scenes. I’m 35 yrs old and I enjoyed it very much. I Live in Puerto Rico and the kids here (especially the little girls) adore this movie. Everyone is diferente. And there are so many diferente cultures and ethnicities and all of that is unique and special. I just think it’s silly to be judgmental even over an animated character (Maui). This is how society is nowadays I suppose, and that’s sad. Have a good day/night everyone.
As a Tongan with family who are also samoan, ima just say this. Idk who the fuck Maui is, and I’m a Methodist, born and raised. I’ve never met a Polynesian who isn’t Methodist, catholic, or Mormon. Disney on some weird shit, and Hawaii is barely considered when talking about Polynesian culture. When Polynesians think Hawaiian, we think “Asians who moved in and live on an island”. I don’t take the term “coconut” as offensive, it’s a fucking food.
As a white person, I'm offended because it makes me look like a good person if I'm offended if something is slightly wrong or incorrect (even if what I think I know, or have been told by others is itself incorrect) reguarding minorities. Even if they aren't offended it's my (self) righteous duty to be offended for them, and to get it banned or atleast cencored. Because that is what a good (selfish asshole) would do. :P

I find it disgustingly hypocritical in today's world that if you're a Polynesian dressed in traditional garb, everyone thinks you're muscular or big boned. If he was a white guy in America every other country would call him a fat, lazy 'murican and body shamed into taking a ton of weight loss pills.
Idk, it's like... VERY clear to me weather the character was pale as shit or had brown skin like Maui, the character is muscular and built. Not "fat". People literally WANT to be offended.
I’m half Samoan they visited my uncle and cousins in Manono while researching for this film, I think they took great care so not to disrespect the Polynesian culture. I wasn’t offended by this movie. I was happy to see that Polynesians finally got a Disney movie 🤗
Casey Sanchez Troy Polamalu future football Hall of famer from the Pittsburgh Steelers loved the movie because it was centered on Polynesian culture. My girlfriend is Maori and she loved it she kinda looks like her too lol
I have a almost 2 year old twin and they love moana my son always starts to dance when he hears the song his favourite song is we know the way and he also likes a few songs from Te Vaka ☺️🥰
As someone who grew up in the early 90's and watched Disney movies wayyy before they even started following in Pixar's tracks and crafting 3D animation--yes, I'm old enough to remember hearing about Disney joining with Pixar; it was very controversial at the time--I never thought Disney would have the guts (let's be honest) to be culturally sensitive. In fact, I never thought they would create strong, independent women (aside from Meg and Mulan) who could stand on their own feet and stick to their guns. The fact that so many people got offended is shocking, but I can understand why they feel that way. I took a mythology course in college a few months ago, and I can say that all myths have multiple versions that shift and change over time. I wouldn't expect Maui to be different. I never thought Maui was fat, either. I just assumed he was a muscular grown man, like Dwyane Johnson lol Thanks for attending my Ted Talk. :D
Hahaha racial tension is so big with lots of races but Polynesians are very well aware of who we are that a Disney movie don’t threaten our existence haha we actually think it was coo hahaha #weknowwhowearr
Im Hawaiian born and raised in O'ahu. I was not one bit offended. I like this movie, it was entertaining and respectful. Also this shows haole being upset. This was a great movie stop creating drama tjat doest exist.
Sakura Ayamekoji Im pretty sure she was basing it off the facts she found out by hearing their opinion, she wouldnt make a video of her guessing what people thought🙄
That's true but i can understand that for example Maui is a hero in the real story and if Disney would make a bad guy out of Maui that Polynesian are offended by it. Sorry i'm Dutch and my English is bad 😅
I'm Hawaiian 🌺 And Maori I was brought up these stories for cultural importances . Their are many similar yet different perceptions about the story of Maui . As a Polynesian I accept the movie , Disney did great ❤️ I think they got all type of Polynesian cultures and stick it together. But I love it 😍
ALWAYS ABOUT HOW MAUI LOOKS. Guys they hired the rock and really wanted him to somewhat look like him, I loved it. Also thats not fat, thats muscle. And ALSO, I loved the tattoo idea and how it played out into the story.
there are many stories of the Kokamura that I've heard when i was young and a majority of them entailed that they were evil Menehune, and for those of you who don't know, Menehune are just tiny mythical humanoid creatures.
I love that Islanders from several cultures were part of writing the script, composing the music, and voicing the characters. I love that Maui looks like the huge, gorgeous, muscular, tattooed men I have met from Polynesia and the Hawaiian islands. I would have been disappointed if he looked Disney's typical prince characters but with brown skin. I love that the corporation made the premier of Moana a celebration of island cultures and artists. The hostile coconuts were a way to make warfare less frightening and realistic for children. Coming from a different cultural background I did not know who they represented, and assumed they were spirits, something similar to the Sidhe of Gaelic folklore. It's a representation, adapted to bring the stories to people all over the world who don't know the mythology. If we're lucky, they'll be inspired to learn more.
I'm a Poly, and really I liked it. It was everything I expected it to be. For anyone who got mad, get over it. What did you expect when people who are not poly try to tell our story? It's like going to a Panda Express, and expecting an authentic Chinese dining experience. Not going to happen. If anyone is interested in our culture, do your own research lol. Moana was just for fun.
I’m part Tongan, as my mom was born and raised in Tonga. As a child she grew up with the story of Moana, after seeing the movie I asked her if Disney was able to portray the story of Moana very well. She said kinda, for some reason she didn’t explain that much.
As a polynesian I 'm already happy disney made a movie about polynesian people. Also it's a movie for children so it's really ok if it's not totally accurate ^^
@@jasmadae7918 is that all you have to say? Are those the only words you know? You've copied and pasted the same response in literally every comment string on this video 🙄🤦🏼♀️
I feel like a lot of people do the being offended for people in another race. From what I’m hearing in the comments, the Polynesian are fine with it and agreeing with Disney on a lot of aspects. There’s a also a few comments saying that Maui looks like that because they want to put elements of The Rock in there. Going back to that getting offended thing, I’m Asian and literally most Asian jokes I hear are from Asians. I’m not going to get offended if you tell me I eat a lot of rice because it’s bloody true Edit: Calm down y’all. I’m not saying no one should be offended. It’s just what I saw. Everyone’s viewpoints vary
I thought it was smart for the creators of Moana to change Maui's appearance. It puts less pressure on the two main characters to be love interests thus putting the focus back on the story 🤷🏽♀️
Disney just wanted to make a interesting movie people shouldn't be so offended about it they meant no harm. I'm sorry if you were offended but they just wanted to make a movie to get paid and inspire children in a way. Then again I'm sorry if you did get offended.
I grew up in Hawai'i and I have Polynesian friends and family who liked the crab (some it was their favorite) for one Hei hei was their favorite. Moana is not supposed to be Tongan-- she is a composite of several Polynesian cultures. I feel this video made generalizations about Polynesians-- like an entire people think and feel the same way. Good video otherwise.
Maui was my favourite character, he's not stupid, he just doesn't care in a funny way x) Edit: if you get offended with a movie, you should see a doctor. Want a mirror movie of the real world/cultures, go watch a documentary and leave the kids movies alone
Carlos Lopes, EXACTLY. People need to stop getting offended it’s a fricking kids movie of course their not going to get every little detail that these people expect, and take it to offense for no reason at all.
@@vhffvjmjvddf3050 no, thats not what they are saying lol. The animators drew the character "Maui" as the same body shape and type as Dwayne's grandfather out if respect
@@lanna8365 if they did that they should've renamed the character as well because as a polynesian maui was never built like that. We read books about him as kids n it was disappointing seeing maui shaped like he ate 5 original book mauis. But its disney so whatever
This video has a great comment section. I enjoyed learning from the polynesian commentors about how many things the creators of this video (not the creators of Moana) got wrong about the movie.
People get offended by everything nowadays, always pointing out mistakes in everything. Why can't Disney make movies based on cultures? They don't have to be 100% correct, it's fictional entertainment. Calm down people
I thought this was gonna be like history of the culture and what the movie was based off of, no one has a problem with it and I think it’s stupid that everyone’s getting offended for people who aren’t offended.
Thank you. Thank you. I'm a polynesian, to me the movie was fine, I actually enjoyed it. Yes, there could have been a few minor touch ups, but it was a good movie.
Yeah I enjoy Moana! I am Samoan which is close to the Polynesian culture and I’m glad that they made a princess that is different from the others and filmed something that is true about our culture and not fake like putting on a glass slipper and fall in love. I stand for my culture and other cultures that are related to us! Thanks Disney for making the Polynesian/Samoan princess and movie 👌🏽 great job Moana and Maui 🔥🔥
Women couldn't be chief in the Tongan culture? They can in the Samoan culture and as a Samoan I assumed they took that element from the Samoan culture. Moana even wears the kuiga which is the traditional Samoan headpiece and is equivalent to a crown.
Ugandan Knuckles yeah I know. There's elements from all Polynesian cultures but I'm talking specifically about the person who said women in the Tongan culture can't be chiefs as if Moana only has Tongan traditions. They definitely took the chieftain aspect shown in the film from the Samoan culture.
As a halfcaste maori samoan i can vouch that there are many different stories of Maui. One thing they did get right is the fact that Maui was cheeky & mischevious. Whether he was “overweight” or not depends on which part island you are being told the story from, that tattoos he had in the movie resemble sacred markings that represent stories of the deeds maui had done, which was noted by disney and seen in the movie. So i dont know why thats seen as a “wrong point” aswell. I feel alot of people are being mislead by the way this video is being narrated, theres no wrong or right story about Maui theres is only “stories”. Although the disney movie isnt 100% accurate its a good watch and a great way for young pacific and maori to see maui in a different light, just remember this isnt the ONLY evidence on Maui
There’s the thing... Moana was probably one of the best Disney movies I didn’t get annoyed of anything, I though Maui was fine, Moana and even The chicken. People today will criticize anything that they can find about Disney movies either; This is too scary, that you bad behaviour. Disney is doing fine on the kids market. Adults should just try and expect that they are gonna be something’s in movies that are gonna be “Not all that kid friendly”, they should just relax. Disney is doing fine.
when i watched the movie
i didinn't think maui was fat.
I though he just was a strong, fully grown man
Same tho
lol I though he was fat because I was really young back then
Same
Init it’s relaxed muscle he looks like a strongman but they probs got offended cuz they stereotyped him
In moari depictions he looks like he is a silm but muscular man is his 20's so Disney's depiction isn't too far he just has a bigger frame
White people love to be offended for someone else. I think they call it birtue signaling
Maori/Hawaiian here also, thinking HEY it's just a movie for kids, not a documentary. Have a little fun, be lighthearted. Stop politicizing everything.
Maori, Cook Island, Tahitian, Niuean here 🤭 and I agree it's just a kids movie. Not a whole deep thing guys 😂
❣️
I'm Polynesian and i loved the movie. It incorporates so many aspects of our Polynesian cultures. I don't know of anyone being offended by the movie. As for maui's size, most polynesians are solid built anyway.
Exactly brave is not historically accurate but I love it bc I never thought Disney would make a movie on my country

You are brilliant😇💎
Yes of course you're right, If they stuck with the original Maui it would have been too easy to see him as a love interest for Moana, especially for the grownups but what about the kids? Want them to grow up so fast like in the movie? Man... they're going to hate their life in real-time, its a child thing let them enjoy.
Thanks it was not Acquaman for the kids.😂😂🤣
I came here to say this.
@@pelinal_whitestrake_ysmir same in maori mythology he lasso the sun to slow him down but he beat him first lol
Vanguard Films Ltd I'm so happy to see diversity in Disney and ur culture is so beautiful.
My Samoan brother finally someone gets it
and they portrayed your culture so incredibly beautifully!
After all it's a kids movie. I'm from Greece and when they made Hercules many people had doubts too. Here, everywhere that you see a drawing or a statue of him, he's naked. Could you imagine Disney making a story with a naked man? 😂😂
A Samoan Maori?? I thought Maori were from New Zealand?
Yeah as a Hawaiian I’m all for Moana. It was nice to see the blend of different Polynesian cultures brought to the Disney world. It’s a family film not a Historical documentary lol
And Disney has been known to take historical stories and modify them into a story for children. The original fables of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, and others are bloody and horrific with bad endings.
But she is not Hawaiian it has nothing to do with them but it is Polynesian like them though

Darkwolf198687 Moon that would be sweet! thank you:)
Alright, I'm going to make this quick though:
Fun Fact #1: Like I said in my original comment, there were female chiefs that Kamehameha had bumped off first.
Exactly. It's a kid's movie. If they wanted 100% accuracy they should've just watched a documentary or read a book

Maori too. I definitely agree. This movie was AMAZING not offended anyway. Only white people say things LMAO

So true 😂

Ok see I’m not Polynesian but literally every Pacific Islander I met has been a buff dude with this tribal symbols they could’ve done way worse

No, I am the same.
Maru Hernandez, don't worry there's me too.
Sure, just continue to live in ignorant bliss while others make/keep things going.
Check out this extended live performance of "We Know the Way" by Te Vaka: th-cam.com/video/Bum4936KgOo/w-d-xo.html

Why are people purposefully looking for something to get offended by? Just enjoy the movie!
When people have nothing better to do, and nothing important in their minds, they often look for reasons to feel offended.

If someone “is ready to be offended” before watching something, I wouldn’t take their opinion seriously.

Andi Fels I believe it the true story is far more disturbing than the one Disney made

NekoMouser you’re so right!
Apparently he’s also model after The Rock’s grandfather do it really had nothing to do with them wanting him to look more heroic
Interesting theory NekoMouser. I like that thought that if Maui was a teenager, he would have turned into a love interest, given Disney's past of princess romances
great point
NekoMouser true ! 💯
“They cut a scene of Moana throwing a temper tantrum and throwing coconuts because it was offensive.”
This was because the islanders they talked to told them that it was. The coconut came from the island, and by throwing it, you were wasting a valuable resource and it was disrespectful. So they changed it to the stick throwing. It got the point across without being disrespectful.
*Maui is not overweight.*
I will say it again.
*MAUI. IS. NOT. OVERWEIGHT.*
He is built for power and strength, and is modeled similarly to the other males in the movie.
The hair does not mean anything!
this!!
And don't forget that Maui in the Disney version is made in the image of Dwayne Johnsons grandpa who came from Samoa and was a wrestler. And Dwayne is the one doing Mauis voice so thats kinda cool :O Which is why Maui is not overweight but just strong
Alaskan Gamers actually he is Maui is supposed to be skinny and muscly
Alaskan Gamers ya, I am islander and it is very offensive
What? Maui isn't overweight it is literaly muscle. Also the story isn't about Maui it's about Moana's and there isn't a real myth or legend about Moana meaning that you can't say that Maui wasn't portrayed right. What if he is older here than in the legend
Joshua Fuhrman thank you.. some common sense.
You make scense he was ive been researching
Joshua Fuhrman true dat
Joshua Fuhrman pretty sure youre correct. I believe that maui is older and musclier.
Disney has never stuck to the original story why would they change now?
Izzy yeah and thank god they didn't! otherwise we would have movies about a 14 year old getting married and a lost in the woods Eugene with no eyes on his face
Exactly. A good example is Hurcules, because the original Greek myth is so different from whatever Disney created.
Although yeah, maui was different than in the original Polynesian mythology version, they did a great job adapting it for a larger public.

Hello, this is kind of random but I was wondering if i could ask you: the way that Tikis are portrayed in video games, art, and some films, and how tourists buy them, do you consider that offensive at all, or is it okay?
I was just wondering, because I love tikis and in certain video games such as Spyro, tikis often appear in some of the island levels, and while I personally love seeing them there, I was wondering what your opinion about that is since you are polynesian. Thank you.
Danny Boy,
Thank you very much for taking the time to explain that to me. I'm very relieved to know that my enjoyment of Tikis, and Tikis being part of pop culture in general, isn't considered offensive. (I have quite a few of them in my house because I love them, lol)
I did read that Tikis originated from Maori culture, but I wasn't sure how deeply rooted their significance still is within their culture or others today.

Kalaninui Akau thank u someone else like me
Kalaninui Akau,
Are you a parent?
The Ducking Homestead and Gardens ...... chill. It's just a kids movie. If they want to learn belief they take a class
Nora Dennis also the sleeping beauty was raped when she was asleep by the prince and then he left her there, and her child died inside her, all the children stories are so fuckin creepy...and I think disney wants to make them more children friendly and yeah I think they are sometimes a little bit ignorant but Idk if they are racist like some people say

how awesome would it be if he gets triggered haha
This has nothing to do with the "real moana", this had everything to do with the how negative caucasians feel about this movie.
Maui doesnt look over weight he looks Samoan Samoans are more broad not fat
Alyssa Keoho THANK YOU
im not tripping, but the ones that were tripping, were mad becuz they portrayed the legend myth Maui as big, when he was known as fit built...there not tripping about Polynesias being big, their tripping that they portrayed the legend Maui as big, when he wasnt known as big, thats why
My husband is Samoan, and he is broad across his shoulders. And it was nice to see the tattoos they used for the men are like the ones Samoan men get done, and probably the other islands in the Pacific have a similar style of tattooing too.

I simply saw him as being super buff, like his voice actor The Rock. Not overweight.

The only thing disturbing about Moana, is that you you think we actually care that it is not 100% historically accurate.
Jayde Kinkaid dont forget that mainly did it for respect and to make him look more like Dewayne Johnson (The Rock)
And yes they specifically designed Maui after The Rock's features :)
I am Maori From New Zealand and i think Moana is perfect the way it is
Platinum Swirl I am Maori but I don’t like how Maui was depicted in this movie
Same I’m māori from NZ it was great but I think they need to aknowledge the māori side of it

I have lived in NZ my whole life but I'm not Māori
IslaJay yeah I agree with you!!
"The demigod was supposed to be a teenager on the verge of manhood" Okay...but this isn't Maui's story
keepmeposted25 it could be based after his adventures? Maui is half human after all, he still ages. Perhaps Moana just met him after.
My thoughts exactly, I got the feeling that all of this happened AFTER Maui's hay-day so he should appear more adult. I loved that he felt like the 40-year old guy reliving is HS glory days. Maybe that's why he wasn't skinny in the movie?
keepmeposted25 THANK YOU 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Exactly you'll,couldn't have said it better myself.👌🏽
I liked that Maui was an older "mentor" type character instead of a teenage boy. It also eliminated the possibility of a romance developing which would have been so boring.
as a Polynesian , i would like to thank u for trying ur hardest to pronounce our Polynesian words
Kathryn Simanu are these facts real if you're polynesian
I know, I like how she tried to pronounce the words, not like other people in Hawaiʻi
Same dude lol like nice try

Actually i totally agree with u

As a Tongan with family who are also samoan, ima just say this. Idk who the fuck Maui is, and I’m a Methodist, born and raised. I’ve never met a Polynesian who isn’t Methodist, catholic, or Mormon. Disney on some weird shit, and Hawaii is barely considered when talking about Polynesian culture. When Polynesians think Hawaiian, we think “Asians who moved in and live on an island”. I don’t take the term “coconut” as offensive, it’s a fucking food.
Moana takes inspiration from all of Polynesia... Moana is not jus Hawaiian,Maori or Samoan, its all of Polynesia..
sillau9 yep
To sum it up. White people offended. Polynesians happy to see a child friendly version of a great story from their culture
Isn't that always the way.
I agree

People from the pacific islands are white people? Okay, you can go on calling them coconuts then. 🙄

As a Samoan we Samoans are big so yeah but it was clearly obvious Maui was like 280+ lb of pure muscle
Maui isn’t overweight. He’s muscular. I swear, people are always finding ways to get triggered.
I find it disgustingly hypocritical in today's world that if you're a Polynesian dressed in traditional garb, everyone thinks you're muscular or big boned. If he was a white guy in America every other country would call him a fat, lazy 'murican and body shamed into taking a ton of weight loss pills.
Roice Rice ikr

I just assumed he was a muscular grown man, like Dwyane Johnson lol
Thanks for attending my Ted Talk. :D

Im Hawaiian born and raised in O'ahu. I was not one bit offended. I like this movie, it was entertaining and respectful. Also this shows haole being upset. This was a great movie stop creating drama tjat doest exist.
You aren't Polynesian. You can't decide what offends them and what doesn't.

That's true but i can understand that for example Maui is a hero in the real story and if Disney would make a bad guy out of Maui that Polynesian are offended by it.

ALWAYS ABOUT HOW MAUI LOOKS. Guys they hired the rock and really wanted him to somewhat look like him, I loved it. Also thats not fat, thats muscle. And ALSO, I loved the tattoo idea and how it played out into the story.
Exactly.
Agreed he’s so cool! My fav character was Maui.
If you look closely at the Kokamura in Moana, they are small humanoid creatures. They are actually wearing the coconuts as armor.
airkrd I love the Kokamora
airkrd wow
Look at 5:37 yes
Ikr they got it all wrong
there are many stories of the Kokamura that I've heard when i was young and a majority of them entailed that they were evil Menehune, and for those of you who don't know, Menehune are just tiny mythical humanoid creatures.
If we're lucky, they'll be inspired to learn more.
i just got clickbated... there was no disturbing real story it was just how the movie was adapted to fit into the polynesian culture geez

I’m part Tongan, as my mom was born and raised in Tonga. As a child she grew up with the story of Moana, after seeing the movie I asked her if Disney was able to portray the story of Moana very well. She said kinda, for some reason she didn’t explain that much.

Women couldn't be chief in the Tongan culture? They can in the Samoan culture and as a Samoan I assumed they took that element from the Samoan culture. Moana even wears the kuiga which is the traditional Samoan headpiece and is equivalent to a crown.
Exactly
But some of the clothes they wear are Tongan but yeah I agree with you
Ugandan Knuckles yeah I know. There's elements from all Polynesian cultures but I'm talking specifically about the person who said women in the Tongan culture can't be chiefs as if Moana only has Tongan traditions. They definitely took the chieftain aspect shown in the film from the Samoan culture.
avilik13 yeah and I agree with what you said
They just made the video for some extra moolah on the side, nothing else. That is why they repeated themselves over and over.
