(RIP) TO OUR DEAR LATE REGIS PHILBIN, YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO TV & MEDIA WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN & WILL BE PRESERVED AT THE MUSEUM OF RADIO & TV NO DOUBT. THANKS SIR NOW (RIP).
I’m writing this on 9/12/23, it’s so odd out of all of the 9/11 footage I’ve digested over the years since…yesterday was the first time that I saw the footage from, “The Regis & Kelly Show”. I wish I had seen it sooner. I grew up with a grandmother that religiously watched Regis, starting when it was “Regis & Kathie Lee”. Together we’d sit together at the kitchen island, watching Regis, eating Grape Nuts, and working on word finds or crosswords. Pretty sure my grandmother started to teach me to be an, “little old lady” when I was 4 years old. I’m probably one of very few kids in the world, that actually enjoyed Grape Nuts (I still do). So in a way, I grew up with Regis. He was like a grandfatherly figure to me, or what I imagined a grandfatherly figure to be like. I cried when I heard of his death in 2020. When I watched their footage from that horrific day, he was ever the professional journalist/ television host. He walked out holding Kelly’s hand. He remained calm and put together. Like a grandfather, trying to protect his family. Careful not to panic anyone. He like many journalist that morning carried a heavy burden. Kelly did well to, especially with the fact that this was within her first or second year on the job. Also, now knowing that her young baby was in the studio. I don’t know how she kept it together. I definitely realized how much I missed them and their show. It’s interesting how people from a television show can become connected to a core memory. It’s like they almost feel like family. Their familiarity can become comfort in the storm.
We all have a story about that day and the days after. How confused we were...how scared. How our culture and sense of society changed forever. I can’t get enough of them. It’s one of the one things that binds us as Americans and as humans.
I remember watching Letterman that night. Dan Rather said he could never again enjoy "America the Beautiful" as he had, because of the lyric, "Thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears" - and broke down sobbing. It really rattled me.
I remember that night all too well. It was the first time that Dan Rather had a chance to just breathe and take a moment. We certainly can't blame him, for he, Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings had been the faces of television for almost a week. No soaps, no comedies, no sports...nothing.
I remember him from way back when I was a little girl who used to be on the Joey Bishop show and then he vanished for a while and I was so glad when he started to come back on to mainstream national TV . Later when he had his show live with Regis I was so glad for him but felt kind of sad for the guy when he had to deal with Kelly Ripa . She could be so crazy acting and controlling but of course Regis was always such a class act he would just handle it in a gentlemanly way . One morning he was very concerned and said something like 21 whales beached themselves and right away Kelly jumped in and made him stop talking about it and he had to apologize and say to us that Kelly wants a happy show . She couldn't even let him talk about that for a moment because she couldn't deal with it and she used to remind me of somebody whacked out of her mind on some kind of drugs . I think poor Regis having to deal with her crazy energy all those years shows what a great man he really was .
Thank you for this upload of the late GREAT Reg❣🙌 Skipped homeroom that morning & was tuned into Regis & Kelly when they reported the planes crashing into the WTC towers. Can still so vividly recall the raw reactions they had to the 2nd plane impact. Thanks be to Mr.Philbin for the decades of his life he dedicated to entertaining.. & supporting Notre Dame💛💙😘 May God rest his soul & bless Joy & his family + friends in their time of loss🕊🙏
Anthony Lloyd that’s the only thing that I loved about that time. We loved and prayed and held onto each other like never before. From Alaska to California all across the country all Americans banded together. I wish it was still that way💔.
I'll NEVER forget that day for as long as I live. I was a Teaching Asst. at a school. I walked into the office to get something, & the TV was on. I thought everyone in the office was watching a movie or something (saw a plane going into a tower). I was then told what was happening. Then I heard the Speech Therapist at the school, crying while saying, "My cousin. My cousin." She was visibly upset, just walking in & out of the school. Then I learned what had happened. The Twin Towers were hit. A major terrorist attack. And her cousin was 1 of the pilots of 1 of the planes that went into 1 of the Towers. He was her favorite cousin. I went into such a state of shock that day. The school day ended immediately. Parents were called to pick up their children. And the police arrived immediately to make sure everything remained as safe as possible until everyone left. I have a niece, who was born on 9/11. That day became tarnished, a day that should have been a day of celebration for her. September 11th.
I was in elementary school . I woke up and walked out to have breakfast and my great grandparents were just staring at the TV. When my great grandma noticed she made me cereal and my great grandfather sat me on his lap and said : "There is evil in the world. People steal, hurt , and kill. There is only one way to fight it, and that's by spreading kindness and holding it in your heart . Today , you will see and hear a lot about an evil person who killed a lot of people. " He had tears. Either for the fact he knew what it was , what it meant, and he couldn't fight anymore for his country. Or , for the world he knew I would have to live in. My dad worked stocks. He came home. He didn't want me going to school, mom did so I went to school . In school , we just watched the TV. Dead silent. Once the pentagon was hit and we learned of another hijacking, we got sent home because we didn't know what would be hit next. It was a very powerful and emotional day .
When Americans were breaking down and needed a dad that day, we had REGIS😭 He seriously was the ONLY PERSON on air that day…that offered humility and sincerity in such a chaotic situation. He was the father we ALL NEEDED THAT DAY. I was 5 years old, and I remember watching Regis feeling he was the ONLY PRESENCE IN ALL THAT CHAOS that offered a safe space. No adults made any sense that day I remember, but he did. And because of that I felt safe enough to sit there and strong enough as a child, to accept the situation and WANT to UNDERSTAND it. I sat frozen, yet felt present again when he kept speaking so calmly. He got the message out, brought us to present moment and feelings, and GAVE US ALL PERMISSION.
The first mass assembly after 9/11 was WWF SmackDown on Thursday, September 13th from Houston Texas. Well before Letterman or anyone was back on television after the attacks.
There used to be a clip of Regis and Kelley showing a picture of the North Tower burning shortly before the South Tower was hit. It was shown on their 9-16-01 show when they came back on the air.
@@PopGoesTheCultureTV I don't believe it. I've searched everywhere. To be clear...I'm looking for the show actually done on 9/11...not a show done after 9/11 in which they were talking about the events that happened on 9/11.

Wtf
I think he meant awful.
Look up the definition of awesome, it doesn't necessarily mean a good thing.
Awesome is a word used to describe the scope of something.
Awesome is also something big, not necessarily a good thing.

@@Nathanmac_75 the older meaning of awesome is to inspire awe. Not necessarily a good feeling.
