Listen to a band called Yat-Kha, I don't think they use balalaikas, but they use traditional russian/mongolian instruments like morin khuurs, and mix folk music from Tuva (Russia) and from the eastern steppe with classic rock, without ditching the autenticity and spirit. They have a album called "yenisei punk", which is tuvan folk more mixed with rock, and another album, "dalai beldiri", that sounds less western but nonetheless its really beautiful and genuine.

He had this old large barrel in his backyard and taught me how to walk on top of it like something from the circus. He made a "hillbilly golf" kit and had a backyard onion farm. Just lots of stuff like that.
