No One Was Home, So I Shopped! | Finding Antique & Vintage Deals

  • This is the most unexpected quickie antiquing adventure! A no-show at an appraisal site gives me a brief moment to find serendipity at a combo decorator/vintage vendor mall in Dunedin, Florida. Will we find beauty, collectibility and profit in this place cited as top antique shop by Tampa Bay Magazine?
Knot On Main Street is a longtime favorite of mine, it always produces reseller priced vintage and cool collector things. But the first half the store is full of shoppers, full of new stuff, full of garage/thrift sale home goods, full of painted furniture...will today disappoint for the first time ever?
Around the corner, the back half of the store is quieter (no radio!), and the antique and vintage items are laying in wait to see if they can dazzle us with their style, uniqueness and/or value for money. A secret Italian spy joins our forces, we go for the Picnic, and today quickly adds up to be a fun and profitable antique and vintage picking day!

George I used to deal at this really nice little antique shop in a place called Leduc just outside of Edmonton Alberta.
I bought some nice things from her at very fair prices. She was very elderly and a very kind hearted person. My last purchase was a "Made in Quebec," wood and glass sewing thread display cabinet . It was such a good price I grabbed it right away.
A few weeks later I stopped in and things had changed. The woman had passed away. Her daughter who sold giftware in the same town had taken over the store and stocked a bunch of reproduction stuff. I'm sorry but when an antique shop starts doing that, I don't go back. This was a huge loss. It still makes me sad.

I’d forgotten about the “Momcat”. When we bought our first house, my little brother brought me a Momcat apron as a housewarming gift. His girlfriend thought it was a horrible gift, but she didn’t know me yet. I used that apron for the next fifteen or so years, till it finally began to fall apart.

I’ve retired from from professional stint as an attorney for the Federal Government while doing Antiques Shows on the weekends in Dallas, Austin and a permanent outdoor double space for 10 years at Canton. Technically, 20 years is vintage, but some of us call it "Etsy vintage" and it's not a compliment. Vintage is defined to me as things as old as you are (whoever "you" is), or stuff you remember knocking around your parents' friends' houses. Antique for reasons of import duties is defined as 100 years old or older.
