  • What causes largemouth bass to be skinny in a large pond? Is it lack of food to eat? Is it overcrowding? Is it both?
Join us as we show you a 25 acre pond with an overpopulation of largemouth bass, and attempt to remove some of the unhealthy fish to improve the population.

It's definitely a fun job to work with all these ponds (big and small)!

I almost couldn't believe how small those things were at those lengths. 22" should be a five pound bass (at least) and that's just the bare minimum.

Great video ! Do you ever recommend Gizzard shad as a forage base ?

What do you do with the fish you remove from the pond? I would think you would increase the food to sustain the population. I hope you don't destroy them, that would not be a good thing.

We give them to the pond owner and he does with them as he chooses. That's not our call. In this case, I believe he gave them to his employees for them eat and enjoy. They weren't wasted. When a pond is this overpopulated, it's hard to add enough forage to keep up with the bass population. So in cases like this, removal is the best option to get things back in balance.

Tough call man but those fish were way undersized. Leaving them in there definitely wasn't an option like that had to be done. But you see they was putting some of those larger ones back so it wasn't like a huge slaughtering or anything. I actually find it very necessary to have them removed. The owner wasn't left much alternative in that respect. take the smaller ones out or let every bass in the pond look like that which it would eventually gotten to were no action been taken.

Could it be genetics? As to why they’re not growing to trophy size

It certainly could be. Although we just sampled this pond last week and the relative weight of the bass has drastically improved. Removing bass and feeding quality food to the bluegill seems to have helped.

@@TLCPerfectPond I have a question for you guys, my grandpa has a pond that’s been established for about 15 years now. Little under an acre. The bass are I believe to be stunted. All the same size. Their stomachs arnt Sunken in or super skinny but they are all small. I took roughly 28 bass out last year roughy 1-1.5 pounds per bass. And stocked 300 2.5-3.5 inch bluegill in the fall. Do you think that was the right thing to do? With it not being my pond I can’t do much besides continue to pull out bass and add more food for the bass. Thanks in advance

@@TLCPerfectPond I’ve fished this pond my whole life and the big bass are all gone. So it’s not a new body of water but until last year we haven’t done any pond management.

You're on the right track. Keep strengthening the prey population and remove any bass that are below 80% relative weight. Here's a blog post on our site that lists relative weight percentages for largemouth bass lengths: tlcperfectpond.com/catch-and-release/

That's horrible. Those fish are averaging 3+ pounds underweight .

Yep. Some of the skinniest bass we've ever seen and we've done a lot of ponds. Too many bass and not enough for them to eat.
