Growing Big Bass in a Fertile Pond Farm - A Simplified Pond Food Chain

  • Growing big bass requires a healthy bluegill population. A healthy bluegill population requires a healthy phytoplankton population.
    These photosynthetic micro-organisms form the base of the pond food chain and are essential for a healthy pond. This is why pond water fertility is so important!
    Agricultural ponds usually receive abundant nutrients from runoff, but other ponds may need supplement fertilization to boost plankton populations. Join us as we discuss the importance of pond fertility and perform an electrofishing survey on a very fertile pond.

    All the residential ponds in my area are fertile because they get fertilizer runoff from people’s yards. Same goes for golf course ponds and they all have that same green color

    Probaly a dumb question but can the blue gill population get to big in size to we’re the bass can’t properly eat them? Beautiful fish by the way!!!!

    • @TLCPerfectPond
      @TLCPerfectPond  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a dumb question at all. You'd be surprised at how big a bluegill these monster bass can eat. They can easily eat one the size of your hand. But I presume there are some bluegill in this pond that are too big for a bass to eat. Those big bluegill are going to be great for the pond though because they'll spawn multiple times a year and help keep a constant supply for the bass in the pond.

    What makes them easy to catch , those strings you throw in water or

    • @TLCPerfectPond
      @TLCPerfectPond  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those "strings" project an electrical charge when we push the foot pedal on the front of the boat. It stuns the fish temporarily so we can net them and put them in the live well. Once we measure and weigh each fish, they're each safely returned to the water.

    Weird.. if you did that in my 5 acre pond.. you would be pulling out 10 bluegill or bass out at a time. Blue gill are bigger than those, but bass are way smaller.

    Did you notice any sores from being previously caught by anglers ?

    • @TLCPerfectPond
      @TLCPerfectPond  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every now and then we'll notice one, but it isn't a regular occurrence. Don't remember seeing any on the fish in this pond. We see gashes in the prey (bluegill) more than we see any hook damage on the bass.

  • @ethanliess4203

    What would you say the biggest bass weighed

  • @russcate1510
    @russcate1510 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seems my blue gill are pretty thick.. I have a lot of bass, but they don’t seem to be getting over 20” and about 1-2 lbs.

    • @EnduroDreaming
      @EnduroDreaming ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to get rid of about 35lbs of bass per acre every year and you’ll get bigger bass.

    Why the musick maybe some explanation of what's going on....

    • @TLCPerfectPond
      @TLCPerfectPond  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a very loud generator on the boat that powers the electrodes on the shock boat. Can't hear anything while shocking. That's why we just film the shocking action and put music over it -- because it sounds better than just a generator running.

    can you have a pond like that in ND

      We don't have those this far south. We do see an occasional chain pickerel in some ponds that we survey.
