    Kai's athleticism and strength was really impressive. You should bring him into your gymnastics gym, and see what he can do there.

    I love the contrast - a guy who looks like a stereotypical nerd beats everybody blindfolded (and still has enough strength left to humiliate everybody on the bar)
    And then there is Ash, losing a to dynamonomometer.
    Great video! Well done on the grip challenge!

    @gunnaruppstad3574 ปีที่แล้ว +55

    As a climber, the most shocking thing about this video were Kai and Ash doing a solid 3 second hang on 8 mm edges, along with the tendon stiffness required for monoing a frontlever. No prior training? That's just mindboggling!

    • @Steven-ro6os
      @Steven-ro6os ปีที่แล้ว

      The front lever was insane but hanging 8mm while pinching the side of the hold isn't at all.

    • @gunnaruppstad3574
      @gunnaruppstad3574 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Steven-ro6os I'f you don't think quarter crimping an 8 mm edge with no prior training and a BMI of 28+ is not mad, then you have higher standards than most. :)

    • @Steven-ro6os
      @Steven-ro6os ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gunnaruppstad3574 idk what a quarter crimp is supposed to be, but i'm js that when you pinch the side of the hold, it's much easier than actually hanging an 8 mm edge without using the thumb on the outside of the hold, which is how you're meant to do it. Whereas if I saw someone doing a mono front lever, I'd automatically assume they were a pro climber.

  • @RockClimberAlex

    You can see from the dynamometer, climbers don't necessarily have a strong grip but can lock their fingers really well, that's what we train. It's a common misconception of strong grip in climbers. All three others, except the climber, had 75 kg on the dynamometer, so their grip was at least 13kg stronger. But climbing (and deadhangs for that matter) is the exact opposite of strong grip, it's the most relaxed grip you can hang on to the hold, so you climb without wasting energy which you probably need for the hard parts. Beginner climbers tend to grip holds waaaay too hard and just gas themselves out and use feet waaay too little.

      I couldn't do it now, but many years ago I climbed a pole with those climbing knobs (what are they called??) on, out of a large group of newbies trying, only my friend and I got to the top, I think it may have been because I used my feet instinctively, having somewhat weak arms/hands

    • @RockClimberAlex
      @RockClimberAlex 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@a_921 It's very easy to see how much stonger legs are besides the muscle mass. Try comparing how many pullups you can do compared to how many squats. If it's arms vs legs, legs win no contest.

  • @millacabral9475

    Wow, I climb and you guys did incredible! For being such heavy dudes you managed to hang on some very small edges and stay on the wall very long. I know Ash's dead hang is normally way better than that, but his arms were clearly very tired at that point. Luke's dead hang was super impressive, I wish you guys would have put the time in the editing. 15 mm edges are already very difficult for the majority of people, but 10 is proper "strong fingers" level for someone who isn't super small and light (finger surface area matters). Ash managing the 8 mm was mind-boggling to me considering he has never trained his finger strength specifically and he's not light, despite being fairly small. I'm 5ft (152cm) and weigh around 48-49 kg and I can barely manage 8 mm for 3 seconds when I am climbing regularly on crimps, so Ash doing that was a huge feat.

    Climbing doesn't train grip strength as much as you'd think. You need to add it to a routine at a high level. Climbing trains finger strength and rarely sees thumb engagement. I reckon in a three hour session I'll crimp (half crimp,.quarter crimp whatever) about 400 times and do a full pinch like 10 times.
