  • The 3 musketeers are back baby!! Gymnastics was way cooler back in the 50's, so we set up the old school uneven Bars like they were in the 1950's and we didn't hold back 😁

When I did gymnastics in the 80's, women's bar routines were in transition. The younger kids coming up in the sport were doing skills/routines with the bars widened out as far as possible. The older girls/ladies, near the end of their careers (like me), were still doing the "fitted" routines requiring the bar width to be adjusted for each individual gymnast. My routines from that time had a variety of belly beats /belly whips in them for transitioning between the bars. Skills/routines could be EXTREMELY PAINFUL if the width between the bars was wrong. If the bars were too wide, your body couldn't bend when it was supposed to. If the bars were too close together, your belly whip happened too high on the body, and either your hip bones or lower abdomen took the brunt of the force in the swing. We used to wrap the low bar with some foam to reduce the impact if you were doing a lot of routines/skills using the belly whip. If I was changing for p.e. in high school, girls were often shocked, seeing the bruises/friction marks on my hips and lower abdomen.
I don't miss those days. NOT AT ALL! It was TORTURE!! 😖😵‍💫🤬

I was doing the hip whips as well (in gymnastics from 1979-1989). I found it near impossible to get the bar at just the right measurement for me - it was my varying degrees of commitment while swinging on the top bar which caused varying amounts of flex in it. This would result in me either slamming my crotch bone or my hip bones into the lower bar. Very rarely would I hit it just right between the two. The bruising was unreal. Needless to say, UE bars were my weakest event.

Yep, I did close bars too. Gotta learn everything new as n adult. And the vault table!! I was already 40 before I vaulted it the first time. It was…an experience, shall we say?! 😂😂

Okay guys, first off, I was a competitive gymnast in the 70s. On the uneven parallel bars as we called it in the 70s. USA. The uneven parallel bars were different for each person. Each person moved the bars 2 their setting. Plus every bar situation was totally different. You had to make sure that the bar was just right because when you hit it you had to hit your hip "flexors" not your hip bones or your thighs or your stomach or your groin area. It had to be just in the right spot and it was like if you're a half an inch off or an inch off it hurt like hell and it was really bad! So when you hit it right and then you swing around and you popped off the bar just right. I mean you popped off the bar to do what your next move was. When you hit it right it was a fantastic feeling. You're FLYING THRU THE AIR, AGAIN! SO COOL! But when not, well it was really bad. U had 2 make sure u were ALWAYS stretching the same amount each time. Seriously, 1/2 inch either way u were destroyed! And in a LOT of pain. We had bruises all over that area all the time!! Not fun! Especially when u hit the groin/crotch area, and then had 2 repeat, and repeat...And then u had 2 do it from a hand stand on the top bar down from above, much more force.. YeYikes! Ouch!! Happened a lot back then. Anyway. Hope that puts in some prospective. Hugs guys. Luv ur content❣️🤸🤸🤸

I appreciate videos where y'all try vintage moves. As new athletes have innovated the sport over the decades a lot of the moves have started to look so crazy that the vintage stuff doesn't look difficult at all. It's nice having it broken down just how challenging and dangerous those moves were. It gives a better appreciation of the athleticism required for the old school style.

Guys you need to adjust the gap between the bars by suspending yourself from the top bar and finding the exact point for your hips. There’s no way that Luke and Nile will need the same setting. It also helps to stick a bit of foam in the legs of your Leo!
