When I saw it on TV as a kid, I missed the shot of the newspaper headline in the beginning, so the ending when he describes Chris being stabbed to death came as a total shock. I was outraged that a movie would do that. Apparently it wouldn't, but it made the movie even more impactful to see it that way.
Madison, this is probably one of the best and definitely the most faithful of the Stephen King adaptations put to film. Rob Reiner really knocked it out of the park. I'm sure you enjoyed "Stand By Me" and I'm glad you got to experience it. Can't wait to see your reaction! 🙂👍
Faithful? Yes I agree. But only because when they try a word for word adaptation. Stephen King doesn't adapt well. Too many emotions that can't be depicted on screen. This one went for the feeling of the story over the word. That's why it succeeded. It also showed people how to do Stephen King. And we got some great movies.
Will Wheaton's (Gordie) real life sadly mirrored the fictional Gordie's. He had a Father who he felt never loved him and resented him for supporting the family with his acting career. Wheaton's siblings could do no wrong in his Father's eyes, but Wheaton was abused. His relationship with his Mom was equally strained. As an adult, he wrote a letter to his parents in an effort to become a family again. His parents took months to reply and basically expressed that they felt any problems were his doing He no longer has any contact with his parents, but is happily married with kids
The summer I turned twelve was perhaps the happiest time of my life. I just loved playing with all the neighborhood kids. There were about eight of us who just hung out together all the time, just doing kid stuff from morning til night. Night time was the best. I loved that group of kids so much. It's fifty years later and I'm not friends (in real life/Facebook doesn't count) with anyone from that group, other than my sister. It's amazing how people who are so important to you can eventually disappear from your life. I think this movie capture the essence of that so well.

This short story is in the same collection of 4 called "Different Seasons"....the same book as "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption." I really miss my friends from when I was a kid. Of course none of us are in contact but they taught me a lot. They taught me that they were the ones who helped me live the best time of my life. I miss them and always remember them. Great reaction as always to a great, great movie.
Im 47. I still have many childhood friends that i see regularly . Most of us, we never missed a beat, and some we reunited at an older age . Im a pretty good judge of character and surround myself with good positive people.
Another thoughtful reflection, especially your comments on small town life. I not only grew up in a semi-rural community myself but in this same time period, so I find much to relate to - not quite as dramatic of course. There's a promo video out there somewhere of Ben E King doing the title song featuring the boys. It was the breakthrough role for the ill-fated River Phoenix. Who knows what he might have achieved had he lived. Nice one, Madison, still rockin' it.
Madison, I'm so glad you watched this movie. It is a real gem. I wish kids could still be on their own and ramble around like they did in this movie. Thanks for another great reaction.
Based on a short story by Stephen King called " The Body ". He once said on a talk show that out of all his books , this was on his top 5 list of favs . Most of Stephen King's stories take place in Castle Rock . The director of this movie also directed other like : The Princess Bride - This Is Spinal Tap - When Harry Met Sally - MISERY ..and other movies.
A great reaction to a great story, Madison. It's a wonderful film about the friendships of childhood and the journey through it to adolescence and beyond.
I strongly relate this novella and this movie to the month of August, to the end of summer in all that implies. It's an end of innocence. In the book _Different Seasons_ it was King's :"autumn" tale and I believe the movie was released in August. The movie is great regardless of the month you view it. Spike Lee even admitted recently that _Stand By Me_ was one of his favorite films. Thank you for posting this wonderful video and letting me watch this with you, Madison. The most remarkable thing about it is how once upon a time, parents would not only let their children out of their sight for five minutes, but for an entire weekend. When I was a boy growing up in Houston, me and my friends set out to explore woods and train tracks by ourselves and were gone hours at a time.
Richard Boone played Paladin in HG,WT. It ran on CBS for six seasons. Series was unique in that a radio version premiered a year AFTER the TV series debuted in 1957. The radio Paladin was John Dehner. He was a knight without armor in a savage land.
One of the best coming of age films & King adaptations (Rob Reiner & William Goldman would go on to collab again and adapt his MISERY ) - Great choice & wrap up Mads.
The friends I had that age was so very important to me, They turned on me once we went to high school and they did indeed become faces in the hallway. Cut to almost 30 years later i discovered one of them were writing stories and told the tale of how they turned on me, I wrote a comment to it and low and behold we struck up an internet friendship after forgiving something I held onto so many years. Two years ago the one that wrote the story passed away from covid.. someone whom i hadnt talked to for almost 30 years and hated during that time, became a good friend once more and I miss him.
This cast was incredible. Wil Wheaton was Wesley Crusher in the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generation. River Phoenix who played Chris was a very talented actor that died way too soon. He was in Indiana Jones 3. His brother is Joaquin Phoenix. Jerry O’Connell is a very talented actor and grew up to be quite handsome. Corey Feldman who played Teddy was in Goonies and Lost Boys. John Cusack a well known actor played Gordie’s brother who died in the movie. This cast was exceptional and cudos to Rob Reiner who directed it. A fun note; Kiefer Sutherland did not fraternize with the young kid actors because he wanted to encourage their unease around him. Another movie along this same genre is The Sand Lot. Another great cast.
Such a heartwarming and beautiful story. Many people don’t realize that Stephen King also did write some amazing stories besides just the horror ones, like Shawshank Redemption and Green Mile.
Me being of generation X people really don't know if they're not a male and from that generation how much this movie deeply affected us how much we loved it and how much It became a part of our culture in my generation. This movie is only in second place to top gun as influencing my generation when we were young. Every friend I know Has a copy of this movie in someway that they still have. Truly a great coming of age and how even generation X, a generation after what is shown here was mostly the same growing up as our fathers generation did. Such a great and timeless movie. And a good reaction even though I don't think you really can understand this movie unless you are a boy or male.
Another great Reiner directed movie is "This Is Spinal Tap". A great comedy done in a documentary style about an aging rock band. Full of of humorous songs and scenes. A favorite among actual rock bands because it hits a bit close to home, so they say. Another Reiner film that's completely different from what you've seen so far.
I had decent friends in grade school and some good friends in high school. But I also had high school friends who inspired my creativity, and with that artsy side also came my corruption with drugs and alcohol. I count myself as lucky that I survived high school at all given all the outside influences that I was exposed to.
What makes this such a great story, in my opinion, is that it cuts across the ageist narrative that adults are great just because they are older. Chris comes from an abusive household...and has wisdom. His teacher is unethical. Gordie's parents can no longer function after a traumatic loss, and arguably weren't functioning before it either. Denny is what we all want in an older sibling.
Madison, many years ago Stephen King wrote a short collection of longish stories called "Different Seasons". This was one of those stories. The movie "Shawshank Redemption" also came from that collection, and also "Apt Pupil". You should buy yourself a copy of that book and read it, I think you would like it. Loved your reaction! 😊 JB
Hi Madison! Actually, this is the 4th film by Rob Reiner that you've reacted to so far. You also did "When Harry Met Sally". Now, you just have to do "The Princess Bride", "This is Spinal Tap", and "The Sure Thing" and you will have covered his amazing initial run of 7 great movies in a row from his debut in 1984 with "This is Spinal Tap" to "A Few Good Men" in 1992. Unfortunately, he mostly lost his touch after that, with a couple of arguable exceptions, but he was a great director in his prime.
Great reaction, Madison. I knew you'd like this one. Another great Rob Reiner movie you should consider seeing is The Princess Bride. I know every other reactor on YT has seen it but I wouldn't mind hearing your insights.
A little trivia for ya... The boys were hiking toward the Royal River. In fact, that is the SAME river that Andy Dufresne threw his gun into before he was convicted and sent to Shawshank prison.

I like how stephen king links his stories with little mentions - like in the book its said that Chopper the dog was the most feared dog until a st bernard called cujo went rabid, and in another book its mentioned that Ace did time in Shawshank prison too. Pretty cool stuff.
The novella by King is masterful I really like SBM but I think it'd be better if the sentimentalized narration should be really reduced because for me it kept taking me out of the moments of the past. And I love Richard Dreyfuss, but I so much more appreciate him in AMERICAN GRAFFITI (1973). Have you seen that yet?

FYI for those who may not know, the song they sing while traveling is the theme to the old TV show “Have Gun - Will Travel” from the 50’s.

I didn’t watch a lot of movies when I was a kid, but this was and still is a personal favorite. Happy Veteran’s Day weekend Madison
This movie is much better than I remembered.

I watched this and The Wonder Years when I was close in age to these characters. Both have a special place in my heart.
As for Rob Reiner, you must also react to When Harry Met Sally and The Princess Bride.
One of the best coming of age stories by Stephen King.
Eyeball Chambers, Chris older brother, also plays the Irish boy Sean that is killed by snakes in Lonesome Dove
That was great! Thank you!
In my top 5 films of all time, thanks for reacting to this. 👍👏🏻👏🏻🇬🇧

All you need is Apt Pupil to finish the 3 Movies made from Different Seasons. I keep waiting for the final novella The Breathing Method to be made.
Now you need to watch King's other heartwarming story - The Mist.

This and "Misery" are the best Stephen King on film. Each was directed by Rob Reiner.
Another good Stephen King movie besides Stand By Me, IT and The Stand is Sometimes They Come Back. Super creepy film and very memorable.
I like how stephen king links his stories with little mentions - like in the book its said that Chopper the dog was the most feared dog until a st bernard called cujo went rabid, and in another book its mentioned that Ace did time in Shawshank prison too. Pretty cool stuff.
Check out two more Rob Riener movies, This Is Spinal Tap and The Princess Bride. Princess Bride was, I believe, his first movie.
The Princess Bride came later. Reiner's first movie was The Sure Thing, which was fantastic but never seems to get mentioned.
Top 50 movie EVER made...maybe top 30. The best for SK.
Another King adaptation worth a review: The Dead Zone
The barf scene is reminiscent of a segment in Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life
Mr. Creosote lol
Next Rob Reiner - The Princess Bride. Next River Phoenix - Running On Empty.

Did you recognize John Cusack as Gordie's brother?
Still can't believe Vern grew up to marry Rebecca Romijn...
Madison check out a similar movie called This Boy's life (1993). Stars Leonardo Dicaprio and is a true story.
Have you seen When Harry Met Sally?? Another Rob Reiner gem.
Yes, my reaction to When Harry Met Sally is here on the channel😊
For The Algorithm!
Check out Princess Bride another Rob Riener film, classic
Definitely Rob Reiner’s best movie (IMO). Great movie overall too.
I think I prefer The Sure Thing. But this is obviously very good too.
I can never watch the pie scene either.
I wonder if you would like Sideways 2004
This one follows the novella very close, except for the title.
I would think the first dead human being he saw would have been his older brother, I assume he attended the wake and funeral
Since he died in a Jeep accident, perhaps it was a closed casket. Just speculating since I've never read the novella.
The Novella's ending is a lot more depressing.
If you like Richard Dreyfus movies watch Mr. Holland's Opus.
