My favorite Christmas present was a pair of pajamas from my mother. She bought them because of the cute little kittens on them... not realizing they were all saying things like "MOUSEL TOV" and "HAPPY HANAKCAT"....... they will forever be my favorite Christmas present ever! I literally could not stop smiling at how ironic they were and yet how appropriate.

after a month of non-stop Christmas all over his website, it's really heart warming for me to see someone that celebrates this season the way I do. I'm always in awe of the fact that there are families all around the world singing the same blessings at the same time yet making them their own through family traditions. I love how Judaism is what you make of it...kind of like the DIYs of religion. happy Chanukah. may your year be filled with light xoxo

    INTERESTING FACT ABOUT DREIDELS:
In Israel, the Hebrew letter Shin on the dreidel (ש) which represents the word שם (there), is replaced with the Hebrew letter Pe (פ) which represents the word פה (here).
Therefore, the sentence is "A big miracle happened here", because the miracle happened in Israel. :)

In college my friends and I played "Drunken Driedel". Shin = spinner drinks, hey = spinner picks someone to drink, nun = everyone drinks, gimel = everyone but the spinner drinks. We drank Manischewitz wine to keep things kosher.

This is lovely - my knowledge of Judaism and Hanukkah comes mostly from RE classes and independent curious googling but being able to put it into the context of a family with their traditions as opposed to something abstract is helping my understanding more than any of that. Nicely informative!

Really interesting to see Jewish tradition abroad! Here in Israel we say "Nes Gadol Haya Po" which means "here" instead of "there" with the letter "P - פ" and we don't really play the dreidel here :D But still latkes are latkes I guess... they are my fave :)

"I've had a knee replacement I can't do that!!" killed me, haha. Really loved this video, your family seems to be the sweetest! I must say that I am absolutely loving Vlognukah so far and as someone who has always been very interested in religion (although I do not consider myself religious) I find it really interesting to hear you talk about it and show how Jewish traditions can be celebrated in today's society! Thank you for that :)
On another note, THANK YOU for adding captions to all your videos!! As someone living with a hearing impairment, they really are useful (especially when English isn't your native language)

Happy Hanukkah Hannah! We also own a ton of dreidels, not least because my mom collects them. We also have a couple with a Pey instead of a Shin for Nes Gadol Hayah Poh (A great miracle happened here).
Love watching your family make latkes. I swear, that base recipe is one of the things that unifies all of us Jewish people across the world. And they are DELICIOUS. Also, A+ on the food processor. When you have that many, it's the only way to go.

this is actually really fascinating for me, as an orthodox jewish person who lives in Israel, to see the differences and the similarities between how we celebrate Chanuka. we're obviously a bit more uptight about some of the rules (we say more prayers before we light the candles, and we also sing the whole of Maoz Tzur which has like six verses) but overall it's pretty much the same, especially the bag of old dreidels that gets to see the light of day only once a year (only here they have the letter Pey instead of Shin, since Shin stands for the word 'Sham' which means 'there' and Pey stands for 'po' which means 'here'). anyway, I'm loving vlognukah! thank you for sharing this!

There's a little thing called "pirinola" in Mexico (I'm not sure if it's in all Latin America) and its similar to the dreidel. It has six sides, and you can also take one, take two, or have everybody putting one in the pile. There's no taking half, just everything... Jajaja and we use everything, from candies, to coins. Love seeing other people/religion traditions. 💗

    Hey dear Hannah,
As a person with interest in history and no idea what to do with their life i was pleased to find out that you have studied history in university. So i have a few questions the answers to which are pretty important to me so id love it if you answered here or if you made another video on history in university. So here they are:
How did you decide to study history and what did you do with history during your teenage years(did you read a lot about it, had real interest and passion?...)also: When you decided to study history in university did you have in mind a profession connected to history or you just had to go to university and chose history cus you found it cool. Final question: what are your mates from the history classes doing, working now?
Please answer or write a blog, or lead us to someone who uses their history degree because obviously not everyone has what it takes to be a youtuber. Thanks for everything you do, you're awesome 😄
    Love from Bulgaria❤

ooOOOOOOOOOooo so THAT is where it came from... sorry here in mexico we recieved something called "Pirinola" but unlike a dreidle it has 6 sides and it has a bit more of adding and taking, being:
    add 1
    add 2
    everyone adds 1
    take 1
    take 2
    take all
I always wondered how different it was from the original dreidle. Thanks Hanna, love you and your videos :3

Great video! I live in Israel so on our dreidels we have a pey instead of a shin. Pey for poh, or here-- a great miracle happened here! Also, the miracle was two fold, yes the bit about the oil, but very importantly also the bit where the Maccabees beat the Greek forces even though they were severely outnumbered, regaining the ability to practice Judaism openly. That's why we usually light the menorah in a window-- we want to publicize the miracle that is our ability to practice Judaism proudly and without fear. Happy Chanukah!

    • @LibaLand
      @LibaLand 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think that is also possibly why people tend to know more about Chanukah than they do about other Jewish holidays-- because public celebration is central to the holiday's focus.

Creative Reindeer the dreidal is specific to chanukah. it is like a symbolic thing for no real reason - similar to a santa hat. just fun and games. each letter does represent something, but tbh it is purely traditional and nothing religious about it!
